In this paper, we compute exactly the average density of a harmonically confined Riesz gas of $N$ particles for large $N$ in the presence of a hard wall. In this Riesz gas, the particles repel each other via a pairwise interaction that behaves as $|x_i - x_j|^{-k}$ for $k>-2$, with $x_i$ denoting the position of the $i^{\rm th}$ particle. This density can be classified into three different regimes of $k$. For $k \geq 1$, where the interactions are effectively short-ranged, the appropriately scaled density has a finite support over $[-l_k(w),w]$ where $w$ is the scaled position of the wall. While the density vanishes at the left edge of the support, it approaches a nonzero constant at the right edge $w$. For $-1<k<1$, where the interactions are weakly long-ranged, we find that the scaled density is again supported over $[-l_k(w),w]$. While it still vanishes at the left edge of the support, it diverges at the right edge $w$ algebraically with an exponent $(k-1)/2$. For $-2<k< -1$, the interactions are strongly long-ranged that leads to a rather exotic density profile with an extended bulk part and a delta-peak at the wall, separated by a hole in between. Exactly at $k=-1$ the hole disappears. For $-2<k< -1$, we find an interesting first-order phase transition when the scaled position of the wall decreases through a critical value $w=w^*(k)$. For $w<w^*(k)$, the density is a pure delta-peak located at the wall. The amplitude of the delta-peak plays the role of an order parameter which jumps to the value $1$ as $w$ is decreased through $w^*(k)$. Our analytical results are in very good agreement with our Monte-Carlo simulations.
Closed form, analytical results for the finite-temperature one-body density matrix, and Wigner function of a $d$-dimensional, harmonically trapped gas of particles obeying exclusion statistics are presented. As an application of our general expressions, we consider the intermediate particle statistics arising from the Gentile statistics, and compare its thermodynamic properties to the Haldane fractional exclusion statistics. At low temperatures, the thermodynamic quantities derived from both distributions are shown to be in excellent agreement. As the temperature is increased, the Gentile dist…
We study an interacting system of $N$ classical particles on a line at thermal equilibrium. The particles are confined by a harmonic trap and repelling each other via pairwise interaction potential that behaves as a power law $\propto \sum_{\substack{i\neq j}}^N|x_i-x_j|^{-k}$ (with $k>-2$) of their mutual distance. This is a generalization of the well known cases of the one component plasma ($k=-1$), Dyson's log-gas ($k\to 0^+$), and the Calogero-Moser model ($k=2$). Due to the competition between harmonic confinement and pairwise repulsion, the particles spread over a finite region of space …
Coulomb charges confined by a harmonic potential display a rich structure at strong coupling, both classical and quantum. A simple density functional theory is reviewed showing the essential role of correlations in forming shell structure and order within the shells. An overview of previous comparisons with molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations is summarized and extended.
We study the active work fluctuations of an active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle in the presence of a confining harmonic potential. We tackle the problem analytically both for stationary and generic uncorrelated initial states. Our results show that harmonic confinement can induce singularities in the active work rate function, with linear stretches at large positive and negative active work, at sufficiently large active and harmonic force constants. These singularities originate from big jumps in the displacement and in the active force, occurring at the initial or ending points of trajectories…
Using a scaling transformation we exactly determine the dynamics of an harmonically confined Tonks-Girardeau gas under arbitrary time variations of the trap frequency. We show how during a one-dimensional expansion a ``dynamical fermionization'' occurs as the momentum distribution rapidly approaches an ideal Fermi gas distribution, and that under a sudden change of the trap frequency the gas undergoes undamped breathing oscillations displaying alternating bosonic and fermionic character in momentum space. The absence of damping in the oscillations is a peculiarity of the truly Tonks regime.
The thermodynamical properties are calculated for a three-dimensional model of $N$ harmonically interacting spin-polarized fermions in a parabolic potential well. The obtained dependences of the chemical potential and of the internal energy on the complete range of the temperature and of the number of particles turn out to obey a scaling law, similar to the scaling from the continuum approximation for the density of states. The calculation technique is based on our path integral approach of symmetrized density matrices for identical particles in a parabolic confining well.
We evaluate analytically some ground state properties of two-dimensional harmonically confined Fermi vapors with isotropy and for an arbitrary number of closed shells. We first derive a differential form of the virial theorem and an expression for the kinetic energy density in terms of the fermion particle density and its low-order derivatives. These results allow an explicit differential equation to be obtained for the particle density. The equation is third-order, linear and homogeneous. We also obtain a relation between the turning points of kinetic energy and particle densities, and an exp…
For a fermion gas with equally spaced energy levels, the density and the pair correlation function are obtained. The derivation is based on the path integral approach for identical particles and the inversion of the generating functions for both static responses. The density and the pair correlation function are evaluated explicitly in the ground state of a confined fermion system with a number of particles ranging from 1 to 220 and filling the Fermi level completely.
We construct the complete $U$-$μ$ phase diagram for harmonically confined ultracold fermionic atoms with repulsive and attractive interactions. ($μ$ is the chemical potential and $U$ the interaction strength.) Our approach is based on density-functional theory, and employs analytical expressions for the kinetic and correlation energy functionals. For repulsive interactions our calculations confirm previous numerical studies, and complement these by closed expressions for all phase boundaries and characteristic lines of the phase diagram, and by providing an explanation and solution for difficu…
We study the distribution of the position of the rightmost particle $x_{\max}$ in a $N$-particle Riesz gas in one dimension confined in a harmonic trap. The particles interact via long-range repulsive potential, of the form $r^{-k}$ with $-2<k<\infty$ where $r$ is the inter-particle distance. In equilibrium at temperature $O(1)$, the gas settles on a finite length scale $L_N$ that depends on $N$ and $k$. We numerically observe that the typical fluctuation of $y_{\max} = x_{\max}/L_N$ around its mean is of $O(N^{-η_k})$. Over this length scale, the distribution of the typical fluctuations has a…
We investigate the combined influence of a magnetic field and a harmonic interparticle interaction on the thermodynamic properties of a finite number of spin polarized fermions in a confiment potential. This study is an extension using our path integral approach of symmetrized density matrices for identical particles. The thermodynamical properties are calculated for a three dimensional model of N harmonically interacting spin polarized fermions in a parabolic potential well in the presence of a magnetic field. The free energy and the internal energy are obtained for a limited number of partic…
We present an exact closed form expression for the {\em finite temperature} first-order density matrix of a harmonically trapped ideal Fermi gas in any dimension. This constitutes a much sought after generalization of the recent results in the literature, where exact expressions have been limited to quantities derived from the {\em diagonal} first-order density matrix. We compare our exact results with the Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA) and demonstrate numerically that the TFA provides an excellent description of the first-order density matrix in the large-N limit. As an interesting applicat…
We study the full nonequilibirum steady state distribution $P_{\text{st}}\left(X\right)$ of the position $X$ of a damped particle confined in a harmonic trapping potential and experiencing active noise, whose correlation time $τ_c$ is assumed to be very short. Typical fluctuations of $X$ are governed by a Boltzmann distribution with an effective temperature that is found by approximating the noise as white Gaussian thermal noise. However, large deviations of $X$ are described by a non-Boltzmann steady-state distribution. We find that, in the limit $τ_c \to 0$, they display the scaling behavior…
We consider an overdamped run-and-tumble particle in two dimensions, with self propulsion in an orientation that stochastically rotates by 90 degrees at a constant rate, clockwise or counter-clockwise with equal probabilities. In addition, the particle is confined by an external harmonic potential of stiffness $μ$, and possibly diffuses. We find the exact time-dependent distribution $P\left(x,y,t\right)$ of the particle's position, and in particular, the steady-state distribution $P_{\text{st}}\left(x,y\right)$ that is reached in the long-time limit. We also find $P\left(x,y,t\right)$ for a "f…
The overdamped Brownian dynamics of a harmonic oscillator is a paradigmatic system in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, which reliably models relevant stochastic systems such as colloidal particles submitted to optical confinement. In this work, optimal thermal protocols are tailored to minimise the connection time between equilibrium states of overdamped $d$-dimensional oscillators. Application of control theory reveals that these optimal protocols are of bang-bang type, that is, the temperature of the bath has to take alternatively the minimum and maximum values allowed. Minimum connect…
Spherical truncations of Coulomb interactions in standard models for water permit efficient molecular simulations and can give remarkably accurate results for the structure of the uniform liquid. However truncations are known to produce significant errors in nonuniform systems, particularly for electrostatic properties. Local molecular field (LMF) theory corrects such truncations by use of an effective or restructured electrostatic potential that accounts for effects of the remaining long-ranged interactions through a density-weighted mean field average and satisfies a modified Poisson's equat…

An analytical expression for the first-order density matrix of a charged, two-dimensional, harmonically confined quantum gas, in the presence of a constant magnetic field is derived. In contrast to previous results available in the literature, our expressions are exact for any temperature and magnetic field strength. We also present a novel factorization of the Bloch density matrix in the form of a simple product with a clean separation of the zero-field and field-dependent parts. This factorization provides an alternative way of analytically investigating the effects of the magnetic field on …
In this paper, we develop a large-$N$ field theory for a system of $N$ classical particles in one dimension at thermal equilibrium. The particles are confined by an arbitrary external potential, $V_\text{ex} (x)$, and repel each other via a class of pairwise interaction potentials $V_\text{int}(r)$ (where $r$ is distance between a pair of particles) such that $ V_\text{int} \sim |r|^{-k}$ when $r \to 0$. We consider the case where every particle is interacting with $d$ (finite range parameter) number of particles to its left and right. Due to the intricate interplay between external confinemen…
We theoretically study the collective excitations of an ideal gas confined in an isotropic harmonic trap. We give an exact solution to the Boltzmann-Vlasov equation; as expected for a single-component system, the associated mode frequencies are integer multiples of the trapping frequency. We show that the expressions found by the scaling ansatz method are a special case of our solution. Our findings, however, are most useful in case the trap contains more than one phase: we demonstrate how to obtain the oscillation frequencies in case an interface is present between the ideal gas and a differe…
We apply a modified mean-field density functional theory to determine the phase behavior of Stockmayer fluids in slitlike pores formed by two walls with identical substrate potentials. Based on the Carnahan-Starling equation of state, a fundamental-measure theory is employed to incorporate the effects of short-ranged hard sphere - like correlations while the long-ranged contributions to the fluid interaction potential are treated perturbatively. The liquid-vapor, ferromagnetic liquid - vapor, and ferromagnetic liquid - isotropic liquid first-order phase separations are investigated. The local …
Two basic correlation functions are calculated for a model of $N$ harmonically interacting identical particles in a parabolic potential well. The density and the pair correlation function of the model are investigated for the boson case. The dependence of these static response properties on the complete range of the temperature and of the number of particles is obtained. The calculation technique is based on the path integral approach of symmetrized density matrices for identical particles in a parabolic confining well.
We report on the dynamics of thermalization by extending a generalization of the Caldeira-Leggett model, developed in the context of cold atomic gases confined in a harmonic trap, to higher dimensions. Universal characteristics en route to thermalization which appear to be independent of dimensionality are highlighted, which additionally suggest a scaling analogous to turbulent mixing in fluid dynamics. We then focus on features dependent on dimensionality, with particular regard to the role of angular momentum of the two atomic clouds, having in mind the goal of efficient thermalization betwe…
Low temperature properties of harmonically confined two-dimensional assemblies of dipolar bosons are systematically investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. Calculations carried out for different numbers of particles and strengths of the confining potential yield evidence of a quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a crystal-like phase, consistently with what is observed in the ho- mogeneous system. It is found that the crystal phase nucleates in the center of the trap, as the density increases. Bose-Einstein condensation vanishes at T = 0 upon entering the crystalline phase, concurrent…
We propose a new method for the evaluation of the particle density and kinetic pressure profiles in inhomogeneous one-dimensional systems of non-interacting fermions, and apply it to harmonically confined systems of up to N=1000 fermions. The method invokes a Green's function operator in coordinate space, which is handled by techniques originally developed for the calculation of the density of single-particle states from Green's functions in the energy domain. In contrast to the Thomas-Fermi (local density) approximation, the exact profiles under harmonic confinement show negative local pressu…
The solvation force of a simple fluid confined between identical planar walls is studied in two model systems with short ranged fluid-fluid interactions and long ranged wall-fluid potentials decaying as $-Az^{-p}, z\to \infty$, for various values of $p$. Results for the Ising spins system are obtained in two dimensions at vanishing bulk magnetic field $h=0$ by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method; results for the truncated Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid are obtained within the nonlocal density functional theory. At low temperatures the solvation force $f_{solv}$ for the Ising fil…
The current understanding of aging phenomena is mainly confined to the study of systems with short-ranged interactions. Little is known about the aging of long-ranged systems. Here, the aging in the phase-ordering kinetics of the two-dimensional Ising model with power-law long-range interactions is studied via Monte Carlo simulations. The dynamical scaling of the two-time spin-spin autocorrelator is well described by simple aging for all interaction ranges studied. The autocorrelation exponents are consistent with $λ=1.25$ in the effectively short-range regime, while for stronger long-range in…
The creation of disordered hyperuniform materials with potentially extraordinary optical properties requires a capacity to synthesize large samples that are effectively hyperuniform down to the nanoscale. Motivated by this challenge, we propose a fabrication protocol using binary superparamagnetic colloidal particles confined in a 2D plane. The strong and long-ranged dipolar interaction induced by a tunable magnetic field is free from screening effects that attenuates long-ranged electrostatic interactions in charged colloidal systems. Specifically, we find a family of optimal size ratios that…
We use a series of molecular dynamics simulations, and analytical theory, to demonstrate that a system of hard spheres confined to a narrow cylindrical channel exhibits a continuous phase transition from an isotropic fluid at low densities, to an orientationally ordered, but translationally disordered, helical fluid at high densities. The ordered fluid phase contains small sections of helix separated by topological defects that change the direction of the twist, altering the local chirailty. The defects break up the translational order, but the fluid develops long range orientational order. An…
We investigate the response of harmonically confined bosons with contact interactions (trapped Lieb-Liniger gas) to modulations of the trapping strength. We explain the structure of resonances at a series of driving frequencies, where size oscillations and energy grow exponentially. For strong interactions (Tonks-Girardeau gas), we show the effect of resonant driving on the bosonic momentum distribution. The treatment is `exact' for zero and infinite interactions, where the dynamics is captured by a single-variable ordinary differential equation. For finite interactions the system is no longer…
We consider a model fluid with long-ranged, dispersion interparticle potentials confined between competing parallel walls. One wall is solvophilic and would be completely wet at bulk liquid-gas coexistence while the other is solvophobic and would be completely dry at bulk coexistence. When the wall separation L is large and the system is below the bulk critical temperature and close to bulk liquid-gas coexistence, a `delocalized interface' or `soft mode' phase forms with a liquid-gas interface near to the centre of the slit; this interacts with the walls via the power-law tails of the interpar…
We determine the exact time-dependent non-idempotent one-particle reduced density matrix and its spectral decomposition for a harmonically confined two-particle correlated one-dimensional system when the interaction terms in the Schrödinger Hamiltonian are changed abruptly. Based on this matrix in coordinate space we derivea precise condition for the equivalence of the purity and the overlap-square of the correlated and non-correlated wave functions as the system evolves in time. This equivalence holds only if the interparticle interactions are affected, while the confinement terms are unaffec…
The dependence of the three lowest order spatial correlation functions of a harmonically confined Bose gas on temperature and interaction strength is presented at equilibrium. Our analysis is based on a stochastic Langevin equation for the order parameter of a weakly-interacting gas. Comparison of the predicted first order correlation functions to those of appropriate mean field theories demonstrates the potentially crucial role of density fluctuations on the equilibrium coherence length. Furthermore, the change in both coherence length and shape of the correlation function, from gaussian to ex…
The classical Coulomb gas model has served as one of the most versatile frameworks in statistical physics, connecting a vast range of phenomena across many different areas. Nonequilibrium generalisations of this model have so far been studied much more scarcely. With the abundance of contemporary research into active and driven systems, one would naturally expect that such generalisations of systems with long-ranged Coulomb-like interactions will form a fertile playground for interesting developments. Here, we present two examples of novel macroscopic behaviour that arise from nonequilibrium f…
