Magnetic skyrmions are intriguing topological spin textures that have attracted great attention due to their potential for future spintronic devices. Skyrmions have so far been explored in different magnetic materials, such as ferromagnets, antiferromagnets, and ferrimagnets. Here, we propose a new type of unconventional skyrmions stabilized in noncollinear magnets. Using first-principles calculations and atomistic spin simulations, we demonstrate that a noncollinear ground state can be stabilized in Rh/Co and Pd/Co atomic bilayers on the Re(0001) surface by four spin exchange interactions, although Co -- a material often used in applications -- is a prototypical ferromagnet with strong pairwise exchange interaction. We further show that unconventional skyrmion lattices and isolated skyrmions can emerge on this noncollinear magnetic background. Transition-state theory calculations reveal that these metastable skyrmions are protected by large energy barriers, suggesting that they could be observed in experiments. These unconventional types of skyrmions in noncollinear magnets might open new possibilities for topological spin transport or magnet-superconductor hybrid systems.
Damping mechanisms in magnetic systems determine the lifetime, diffusion and transport properties of magnons, domain walls, magnetic vortices, and skyrmions. Based on the phenomenological Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, here the effective damping parameter in noncollinear magnetic systems is determined describing the linewidth in resonance experiments or the decay parameter in time-resolved measurements. It is shown how the effective damping can be calculated from the elliptic polarization of magnons, arising due to the noncollinear spin arrangement. It is concluded that the effective dampin…
In recent years, noncollinear topological textures have long gained increasing research attentions for their high values of both fundamental researches and potential applications. The recent discovery of intrinsic orders in magnetic and polar two-dimensional van der Waals materials provides a new ideal platform for the investigation of noncollinear topological textures. Here, we review the theoretical and experimental progresses on noncollinear topological textures in two-dimensional van der Waals materials in very recent years. During these years, magnetic skyrmions of both Bloch and Néel typ…
Quantum phase transitions in the two-dimensional Kugel-Khomski model on a square lattice are studied using the plaquette mean field theory and the entanglement renormalization ansatz. When $3z^2-r^2$ orbitals are favored by the crystal field and Hund's exchange is finite, both methods give a noncollinear exotic magnetic order which consists of four sublattices with mutually orthogonal nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic second neighbor spins. We derive effective frustrated spin model with second and third neighbor spin interactions which stabilize this phase and follow from spin-orbital qua…
Noncollinear magnets provide essential ingredients for the next generation memory technology. It is a new prospect for the Heusler materials, already well known due to the diverse range of other fundamental characteristics. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of novel noncollinear tetragonal Mn2RhSn Heusler material exhibiting unusually strong canting of its magnetic sublattices. It undergoes a spin-reorientation transition, induced by a temperature change and suppressed by an external magnetic field. Because of the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange and magn…
Noncollinear spin textures in ferromagnetic ultrathin films are currently the subject of renewed interest since the discovery of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). This antisymmetric exchange interaction selects a given chirality for the spin textures and allows stabilising configurations with nontrivial topology. Moreover, it has many crucial consequences on the dynamical properties of these topological structures, including chiral domain walls (DWs) and magnetic skyrmions. In the recent years the study of noncollinear spin textures has been extended from single ultrathi…
We present a comprehensive theory of the magnetic phases in twisted bilayer Cr-trihalides through a combination of first-principles calculations and atomistic simulations. We show that the stacking-dependent interlayer exchange leads to an effective moiré field that is mostly ferromagnetic with antiferromagnetic patches. A wide range of noncollinear magnetic phases can be stabilized as a function of the twist angle and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as a result of the competing interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling and the energy cost for forming domain walls. In particular, we demonstrate …
We theoretically propose that magnetic skyrmion, nanometric spin vortex characterized by a quantized topological number, can be electrically created on a thin-film specimen of chiral-lattice magnetic insulator within a few nanoseconds by applying an electric field via an electrode tip taking advantage of coupling between noncollinear skyrmion spins and electric polarizations. This finding will pave a route to utilizing multiferroic skyrmions as information carriers for low-energy-consuming magnetic storage devices without Joule-heating energy losses.
Here we present the tetragonal stoichiometric Heusler compound Pt$_2$MnGa with the noncollinear AFM order stable up to 350 K. It is resolved by the neutron diffraction as a helical spiral propagating along the tetragonal axis. Ab-initio calculations suggest a pure exchange origin of the spiral and explain its helical character being stabilized by a large basal plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA). Together with the inversion-symmetric crystal structure, this provides a bi-stability of a spiral with respect to the right- and left-handed magnetic helices. Despite the large MCA, the long per…
Skyrmions and antiskyrmions are topologically protected spin structures with opposite topological charge. Particularly in coexisting phases, these two types of magnetic quasi-particles may show fascinating physics and potential for spintronic devices. While skyrmions are observed in a wide range of materials, until now antiskyrmions were exclusive to materials with D2d symmetry. In this work, we show first and second-order antiskyrmions stabilized by magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in Fe/Gd-based multilayers. We modify the magnetic properties of the multilayers by Ir insertion layers. Using…
Storing and accessing information in atomic-scale magnets requires magnetic imaging techniques with single-atom resolution. Here, we show simultaneous detection of the spin-polarization and exchange force, with or without the flow of current, with a new method, which combines scanning tunneling microscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy. To demonstrate the application of this new method, we characterize the prototypical nano-skyrmion lattice formed on a monolayer of Fe/Ir(111). We resolve the square magnetic lattice by employing magnetic exchange force microscopy, demonstrating its app…
We investigate the magnetic phase diagram of 1T-vanadium dichalcogenide monolayers in Janus configuration (VSeTe, VSSe, and VSTe) from first principles. The magnetic exchange, magnetocrystalline anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) are computed using density functional theory calculations, while the temperature- and field-dependent magnetic phase diagram is simulated using large-scale atomistic spin modeling in the presence of thermal fluctuations. The boundaries between magnetic ordered phases and paramagnetic phases are determined by cross-analyzing the average topological …
Nanoscale magnetic skyrmions have interesting static and transport properties that make them candidates for future spintronic devices. Control and manipulation of the size and behavior of skyrmions is thus of crucial importance. Using a Ginzburg-Landau approach, we show theoretically that skyrmions and skyrmion lattices can be stabilized by a spatial modulation of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in a thin film of centro-symmetric ferromagnet. Remarkably, the skyrmion size is determined by the ratio of the exchange length and the period of the spatial modulation of the anisotropy, at variance …
We report dynamics of skyrmion bubbles driven by spin-transfer torque in achiral ferromagnetic nanostripes using micromagnetic simulations. In a three-dimensional uniaxial ferromagnet with a quality factor that is smaller than 1, the skyrmion bubble is forced to stay at the central nanostripe by a repulsive force from the geometry border. The coherent motion of skyrmion bubbles in the nanostripe can be realized by increasing the quality factor to ~3.8. Our results should propel the design for future spintronic devices such as artificial neural computing and racetrack memory based on dipole-sta…
Structurally similar transition metal systems can have widely differing magnetic properties. A prime example of this is found for bilayers on Ir(111), where Pd/Fe/Ir(111) ground state has a well-established noncollinear spin texture, while Pd/Co/Ir(111) present a ferromagnetic (FM) single-domain. To unravel the origins of these different magnetic behaviors, an investigation of Pd/Fe and Pd/Co bilayers on Ir(111), is here performed. Based on the obtained \textit{ab-initio} electronic structure, exchange coupling parameters ($J_{ij}$) and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI), we demonstrate …
Based on a combined charge and vector spin transport theory capable of imaging noncollinear magnetic textures on surfaces with spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM), the high-resolution tunneling electron charge and coupled spin transport properties of a variety of Néel- and Bloch-type skyrmions are investigated. Axially symmetric skyrmions are considered within the same topology class characterized by a vorticity value of $m=1$, and their helicities are varied by taking $γ=0$ and $π$ values for the Néel skyrmions and $γ=-π/2$ and $π/2$ values for the Bloch skyrmions. Depending…
We demonstrate the formation of metastable Néel-type skyrmion arrays in Pt/Co/Ni/Ir multi-layers at zero-field following \textit{ex situ} application of an in-plane magnetic field using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. The resultant skyrmion texture is found to depend on both the strength and misorientation of the applied field as well as the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. To demonstrate the importance of the applied field angle, we leverage bend contours in the specimens which coincide with transition regions between skyrmion and labyrinth patterns. Subsequent applica…
We study the stabilization and electrical manipulation of skyrmions in magnetic ultrathin films in the absence of an applied magnetic field. We show that this requires an increased magnetic anisotropy, controlled by the sample thickness, as compared to usual skyrmionic samples, so that the uniform state corresponds to the zero field ground state and the skyrmions to metastable excitations. Although skyrmion stabilization at zero field is demonstrated over a broad range of thicknesses, electrical control appeared to be more demanding to avoid skyrmion deformation. In the thinnest samples, the l…
Magnetic skyrmions are localized, topologically protected spin-structures that have been proposed for storing or processing information due to their intriguing dynamical and transport properties. Important in terms of applications is the recent discovery of interface stabilized skyrmions as evidenced in ultra-thin transition-metal films. However, so far only skyrmions at interfaces with a single atomic layer of a magnetic material were reported, which greatly limits their potential for application in devices. Here, we predict the emergence of skyrmions in [4d/Fe_2/5d]_n multilayers, i.e. struc…
We present a combined analytical and numerical micromagnetic study of the equilibrium energy, size and shape of anti-skyrmionic magnetic configurations. Anti-skyrmions can be stabilized when the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction has opposite signs along two orthogonal in-plane directions, breaking the magnetic circular symmetry. We compare the equilibrium energy, size and shape of anti-skyrmions and skyrmions that are stabilized respectively in environments with anisotropic and isotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, but with the same strength of the magnetic interactions. When the dipolar…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable spin swirling particle like entities which are appealing for next generation spintronic devices. The expected low critical current density for the motion of skyrmions makes them potential candidates for future energy efficient electronic devices. Several heavy metal/ferromagnetic (HM/FM) systems have been explored in the past decade to achieve faster skyrmion velocity at low current densities. In this context, we have studied Pt/CoFeB/MgO heterostructures in which skyrmions have been stabilized at room temperature (RT). It has been observed that the …
Magnetic skyrmions are topological solitons with a nanoscale winding spin texture that hold promise for spintronics applications. Until now, skyrmions have been observed in a variety of magnets that exhibit nearly parallel alignment for the neighbouring spins, but theoretically, skyrmions with anti-parallel neighbouring spins are also possible. The latter, antiferromagnetic skyrmions, may allow more flexible control compared to the conventional ferromagnetic skyrmions. Here, by combining neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that a fractional antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattic…
The interesting physics and potential memory technologies resulting from topologically protected spin textures such as skyrmions, has prompted efforts to discover new material systems that can host these kind of magnetic structures. Here we use the highly tunable magnetic properties of amorphous Fe/Gd multilayer films to explore the magnetic properties that lead to dipole-stabilized skyrmions and skyrmion lattices that form from the competition of dipolar field and exchange energy. Using both real space imaging and reciprocal space scattering techniques we determined the range of material prop…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin structures having immense potential for energy efficient spintronic devices. However, observations of skyrmions at room temperature are limited to patterned nanostructures. Here, we report the observation of stable skyrmions in unpatterned Ta/Co2FeAl(CFA)/MgO thin film heterostructures at room temperature and in zero external magnetic field employing magnetic force microscopy. The skyrmions are observed in a trilayer structure comprised of heavy metal (HM)/ferromagnet (FM)/Oxide interfaces which result in strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interact…
Owing to the experimental discovery of magnetic skyrmions stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and/or dipolar interactions in thin films, there is a recent upsurge of interest in magnetic skyrmions with antiferromagnetic spins in order to overcome the fundamental limitations inherent with skyrmions in ferromagnetic materials. Here, we report on the observation of compact ferrimagnetic skyrmions for the class of amorphous alloys consisting of 4f rare-earth and 3d transition-metal elements with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, using a DyCo$_3$ film, that are identified by combining x-ray ma…
We show that magnetic skyrmions can be stabilized at room temperature in continuous Ir/Co/Pt multilayers on SiO2/Si substrate without prior application of electric current or magnetic field. While decreasing the Co thickness, tuning of the magnetic anisotropy gives rise to a transition from worm-like domain patterns to long and separate stripes. The skyrmions are clearly imaged in both states using Magnetic Force Microscopy. The density of skyrmions can be significantly enhanced after applying the in-plane field procedure. In addition, we have investigated the phase diagram of a sample deposit…
We demonstrate deterministic control of dipole-field-stabilized skyrmions by means of spin-orbit torques arising from heavy transition-metal seed layers. Experiments are performed on amorphous Fe/Gd multilayers that are patterned into wires and exhibit stripe domains and dipole skyrmions at room temperature. We show that while the domain walls and skyrmions are achiral on average due to lack of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, the Néel-like closure domain walls at each surface are chiral and can couple to spin-orbit torques. The current-induced domain evolutions are reported for different m…
Magnetic skyrmions are nanometric spin textures of outstanding potential for spintronic applications due to unique features governed by their non-trivial topology. It is well known that skyrmions of definite chirality are stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction (DMI) in bulk non-centrosimmetric materials or ultrathin films with strong spin-orbit coupling in the interface. In this work, we report on the detection of magnetic hedgehog-skyrmions at room temperature in confined systems with neither DMI nor perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We show that soft magnetic (permallo…
Diffusion of particles has wide repercussions ranging from particle-based soft matter systems to solid state systems with particular electronic properties. Recently, in the field of magnetism, diffusion of magnetic skyrmions, topologically stabilized quasi-particles, has been demonstrated. Here we show that by applying a magnetic in-plane field and therefore breaking the symmetry of the system, the skyrmion diffusion becomes anisotropic with faster diffusion parallel to the field axis and slower diffusion perpendicular to it. We furthermore show that the absolute value of the applied field con…
Magnetic skyrmions, vortex-like swirling spin textures characterized by a quantized topological invariant, realized in chiral-lattice magnets are currently attracting intense research interest. In particular, their dynamics under external fields is an issue of vital importance both for fundamental science and for technical application. Whereas observations of magnetic skyrmions had been limited to metallic magnets so far, their realization was discovered also in a chiral-lattice insulating magnet Cu2OSeO3 in 2012. Skyrmions in the insulator turned out to exhibit multiferroic nature with spin-i…
Magnetic skyrmions are small swirling topological defects in the magnetization texture stabilized by the protection due to their topology. In most cases they are induced by chiral interactions between atomic spins existing in non-centrosymmetric magnetic compounds or in thin films in which inversion symmetry is broken by the presence of an interface. The skyrmions can be extremely small with diameters in the nanometer range and, importantly, they behave as particles that can be moved, created or annihilated, making them suitable for abacus-type applications in information storage, logic or neu…
Facing the ever-growing demand for data storage will most probably require a new paradigm. Magnetic skyrmions are anticipated to solve this issue as they are arguably the smallest spin textures in magnetic thin films in nature. We designed cobalt-based multilayered thin films where the cobalt layer is sandwiched between two heavy metals providing additive interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which reach about 2 mJ/m2 in the case of the Ir/Co/Pt multilayers. Using a magnetization-sensitive scanning x-ray transmission microscopy technique, we imaged magnetic bubble-like domains in the…
We investigate laser-induced torques in magnetically non-collinear ferromagnets with a spin-spiral magnetic structure using \textit{ab-initio} calculations. Since spin-spirals may be used to approximate the magnetization gradients locally in domain walls and skyrmions, our method may be used to obtain the laser-induced torques in such objects from a multiscale approach. Employing the generalized Bloch-theorem we obtain the electronic structure computationally efficiently. We employ our method to assess the laser-induced torques in bcc Fe, hcp Co, and L$_{1}0$ FePt when a spin-spiral magnetic s…
In this paper, we study the stability of skyrmions (SKYs) caused by the geometric confinement (GC) effect observed in nano-domains in recent experiments, where SKYs appear only inside the boundary and is stable at the low magnetic field region. However, the mechanism of the GC effect is unclear for skyrmions. We numerically find that this effect is not observed in the standard model, in which the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) energy is discretized on lattice edges, while the effect is observed in a discrete model where the DMI energy is defined on lattice volume elements. In the latt…
Skyrmions are topologically protected entities in magnetic materials which have the potential to be used in spintronics for information storage and processing. However, Skyrmions in ferromagnets have some intrinsic difficulties which must be overcome to use them for spintronic applications, such as the inability to move straight along current. We show that Skyrmions can also be stabilized and manipulated in antiferromagnetic materials. An antiferromagnetic Skyrmion is a compound topological object with a similar but of opposite sign spin texture on each sublattice, which e.g. results in a comp…
A stable skyrmion, representing the smallest realizable magnetic texture, could be an ideal element for ultra-dense magnetic memories. Here, we review recent progress in the field of skyrmionics, which is concerned with studies of tiny whirls of magnetic configurations for novel memory and logic applications, with a particular emphasis on antiskyrmions. Magnetic antiskyrmions represent analogs of skyrmions with opposite topological charge. Just like skyrmions, antiskyrmions can be stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, as has been demonstrated in a recent experiment. Here, we emp…

Topological spin structures, such as magnetic skyrmions, hold great promises for data storage applications, thanks to their inherent stability. In most cases, skyrmions are stabilized by magnetic fields in non-centrosymmetric systems displaying the chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction, while spontaneous skyrmion lattices have been reported in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets with long-range interactions. Here, a spontaneous anti-biskyrmion lattice with unique topology and chirality is predicted in the monolayer of a semiconducting and centrosymmetric metal halide, NiI$_2$. Our fi…
Several challenges in designing an operational Skyrmion racetrack memory are well-known. Among those challenges, a few contradictions can be identified if researchers were to rely only on metallic materials. Hence, expanding the exploration on Skyrmion Physics into oxide materials is essential to bridge the contradicting gap. In this topical review, we first briefly revise the theories and criteria involved in stabilizing and manipulating Skymions, followed by studying the behaviors of dipolar-stabilized magnetic bubbles. Next, we explore the properties of multiferroic Skyrmions with magnetoel…
We study the spectral characteristics of spin current nano-oscillators based on the Pt/[Co/Ni] magnetic multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. By varying the applied magnetic field and current, both localized and propagating spin wave modes of the oscillation are achieved. At small fields, we observe an abrupt onset of the modulation sidebands. We use micromagnetic simulations to identify this state as a dynamical magnetic skyrmion stabilized in the active device region by spin current injection, whose current-induced dynamics is accompanied by the gyrotropic motion of the core due…
Magnetic skyrmion is a promising building block for developing information storage and computing devices. It can be stabilized in a ferromagnetic thin film with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The moving ferromagnetic skyrmion may show the skyrmion Hall effect, that is, the skyrmion shows a transverse shift when it is driven by a spin current. Here, we numerically and theoretically study the current-driven dynamics of a ferromagnetic nanoscale skyrmion in the presence of the anisotropic DMI, where the skyrmion has an elliptical shape. The skyrmion Hall effect of the elliptical sky…
We demonstrate that magnetic skyrmions with a mean diameter around 60 nm can be stabilized at room temperature and zero external magnetic field in an exchange-biased Pt/Co/NiFe/IrMn multilayer stack. This is achieved through an advanced optimization of the multilayer stack composition in order to balance the different magnetic energies controlling the skyrmion size and stability. Magnetic imaging is performed both with magnetic force microscopy and scanning Nitrogen-Vacancy magnetometry, the latter providing unambiguous measurements at zero external magnetic field. In such samples, we show tha…
