We give a Hamiltonian formulation of %the first order Weyl--Einstein--Cartan gravity which is covariant from the viewpoint of the geometry of the principal fiber bundle. The connection is represented by a $1$-form with values in the Poincaré Lie algebra, which is defined on the total space of the orthonormal frame bundle fibered over the space-time. Within the $10$-plectic framework we discover that the local equivariance property of the Cartan connection is a consequence of the Hamilton equations.
We clarify the structure obtained in Hélein and Vey's proposition for a variational principle for the Einstein-Cartan gravitation formulated on a frame bundle starting from a structure-less differentiable 10-manifold (arXiv:1508.07765v2 [math-ph]). The obtained structure is locally equivalent to a frame bundle. We show that under global hypotheses the formalism allows to produce variational principles which induce a frame bundle structure with a fibration over a base manifold and a variational principle on the base manifold. Our perspective on the model allows us to extend the Einstein-Cartan …
In previous works, questioning the mathematical nature of the connection in the translations gauge theory formulation of Teleparallel Equivalent to General Relativity (TEGR) Theory led us to propose a new formulation using a Cartan connection. In this review, we summarize the presentation of that proposal and discuss it from a gauge theoretic perspective.
We give a detailed account of the cyclic $L_\infty$-algebra formulation of general relativity with cosmological constant in the Einstein-Cartan-Palatini formalism on spacetimes of arbitrary dimension and signature, which encompasses all symmetries, field equations and Noether identities of gravity without matter fields. We present a local formulation as well as a global covariant framework, and an explicit isomorphism between the two $L_\infty$-algebras in the case of parallelizable spacetimes. By duality, we show that our $L_\infty$-algebras describe the complete BV-BRST formulation of Einste…
We give an explicit description, in terms of bracket, anchor, and pairing, of the standard cochain complex associated to a Courant algebroid. In this formulation, the differential satisfies a formula that is formally identical to the Cartan formula for the de Rham differential. This perspective allows us to develop the theory of Courant algebroid connections in a way that mirrors the classical theory of connections. Using a special class of connections, we construct secondary characteristic classes associated to any Courant algebroid.
In this note the AKSZ construction is applied to the BFV description of the reduced phase space of the Einstein-Hilbert and of the Palatini--Cartan theories in every space-time dimension greater than two. In the former case one obtains a BV theory for the first-order formulation of Einstein--Hilbert theory, in the latter a BV theory for Palatini--Cartan theory with a partial implementation of the torsion-free condition already on the space of fields. All theories described here are BV versions of the same classical system on cylinders. The AKSZ implementations we present have the advantage of …
Any local gauge theory can be represented as an AKSZ sigma model (upon parameterization if necessary). However, for non-topological models in dimension higher than 1 the target space is necessarily infinite-dimensional. The interesting alternative known for some time is to allow for degenerate presymplectic structure in the target space. This leads to a very concise AKSZ-like representation for frame-like Lagrangians of gauge systems. In this work we concentrate on Einstein gravity and show that not only the Lagrangian but also the full-scale Batalin--Vilkovisky formulation is naturally encode…
We study an $SO(1,3)$ pure connection formulation in four dimensions for real-valued fields, inspired by the Capovilla, Dell and Jacobson complex self-dual approach. By considering the CMPR BF action, also, taking into account a more general class of the Cartan-Killing form for the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so(1,3)}$ and by refining the structure of the Lagrange multipliers, we integrate out the metric variables in order to obtain the pure connection action. Once we have obtained this action, we impose certain restrictions on the Lagrange multipliers, in such a way that the equations of motion le…
The present work provides a mathematically rigorous account on super fiber bundle theory, connection forms and their parallel transport, that ties together various approaches. We begin with a detailed introduction to super fiber bundles. We then introduce the concept of so-called relative supermanifolds as well as bundles and connections defined in these categories. Studying these objects turns out to be of utmost importance in order to, among other things, model anticommuting classical fermionic fields in mathematical physics. We then construct the parallel transport map corresponding to such…
Symmetries and, in particular, Cartan (Noether) symmetries and conserved quantities (conservation laws) are studied for the multisymplectic formulation of first and second order Lagrangian classical field theories. Noether-type theorems are stated in this geometric framework. The concept of gauge symmetry and its geometrical meaning are also discussed in this formulation. The results are applied to study Noether and gauge symmetries for the multisymplectic description of the electromagnetic and the gravitational theory; in particular, the Einstein--Hilbert and the Einstein--Palatini approaches…
