We study the non-Markovian dynamics of a giant artificial atom coupled to a one-dimensional acoustic waveguide beyond the rotating-wave and weak-coupling approximations. By combining an optimized ESPRIT-based decomposition of the bath correlation function with the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM), we achieve numerically exact simulations in regimes with long memory times, finite temperature, and strong system-bath coupling. Benchmarking against analytical results reveals the breakdown of perturbative non-Markovian approaches such as Redfield theory even at weak coupling in the presence of delay-induced memory. We further show that non-Markovian features, including excitation revivals, remain robust at finite temperature and can be enhanced by increasing the system-bath coupling strength. Our approach provides a versatile framework for studying non-Markovian quantum dynamics in structured environments relevant to giant-atom platforms.
We investigate the effect of counter-rotating-wave terms on the non-Markovianity in quantum open systems by employing the hierarchical equations of motion in the framework of the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion approach. As illustrative examples, the non-Markovian memory effect of a qubit embedded in a bosonic and a fermionic environment at zero temperature are analyzed. It is found that the counter-rotating-wave terms are able to enhance the observed non-Markovianity no matter the environment is composed of bosons or fermions. This result suggests that the rotating-wave approximation ma…
For the model of a multi-level system in the rotating wave approximation we obtain the corrections for a usual weak coupling limit dynamics by means of perturbation theory with Bogolubov-van Hove scaling. It generalizes our previous results on a spin-boson model in the rotating wave approximation. Additionally, in this work we take into account some dependence of the system Hamiltonian on the small parameter. We show that the dynamics is long-time Markovian, i.e. after the bath correlation time all the non-Markovianity could be captured by the renormalization of initial condition and correlati…
We investigate the non-Markovian dynamics of two giant artificial atoms interacting with a continuum of bosonic modes in a one-dimensional (1D) waveguide. Based on the diagrammatic method, we present the exact analytical solutions, which predict the rich phenomena of collective radiance. For the certain collective states, the decay rates are found to be far beyond that predicted in the the Dicke model and standard Markovian framework, which indicates the occurrence of super-superradiance. The superadiance-to-subradiance transition could be realized by adjusting the exchange symmetry of giant a…
We study the disentanglement dynamics of two giant atoms coupled to a common one-dimensional waveguide. We focus on the non-Markovian retarded effect in the disentanglement of the two giant atoms by taking the photon transmission time into account. By solving the time-delayed equations of motion for the probability amplitudes, we obtain the evolution of the entanglement of the two giant atoms, which are initially in the maximally entangled states in the single-excitation space. It is found that the retardation-induced non-Markovianity leads to non-exponential decay and revivals of entanglement…
In recent experiments, electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) were observed with giant atoms, but nothing unconventional were found from the transmission spectra. In this letter, we show that unconventional EIT does exist in giant atoms, and indicate why it has not been observed so far. Different from these existing works, this letter presents a consistent theory including a real space method and a time delayed master equation for observing unconventional EIT. We discover that this phenomenon is a quantum effect which cannot be correctly described in a semi-classical way as those in re…
We study the coherent single-photon scattering in a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to a giant artificial molecule consisting of two coupled giant atoms. Since each giant atom couples to the waveguide via two coupling points, the couplings of the molecule with the waveguide have three different coupling configurations: the separated-, braided-, and nested-coupling cases. We obtain the exact expressions of the single-photon transmission and reflection amplitudes with the real-space approach. It is found that the behavior of the scattering spectra depends on the phase shift between two neighbo…
We introduce the Friedrichs model at finite temperature which is one- and zero-particle restriction of spin-boson in the rotating wave approximation and obtain the population of the excited state for this model. We also consider the oscillator interacting with bosonic thermal bath in the rotating wave approximation and obtain dynamics of mean excitation number for this oscillator. Both solutions are expressed in terms of integrals of zero-temperature solutions with correspondent correlation functions.
We investigate the single-photon scattering spectra of a giant atom coupled to a one dimensional waveguide via multiple connection points or a continuous coupling region. Using a full quantum mechanical method, we obtain the general analytic expressions for the single-photon scattering coefficients, which are valid in both the Markovian and the non-arkovian regimes. We summarize the influences of the non-dipole effects, mainly caused by the phases accumulated by photons traveling between coupling points, on the scattering spectra. We find that under the Markovian limit, the phase decay is detu…
In quantum optics, light-matter interaction has conventionally been studied using small atoms interacting with electromagnetic fields with wavelength several orders of magnitude larger than the atomic dimensions. In contrast, here we experimentally demonstrate the vastly different giant atom regime, where an artificial atom interacts with acoustic fields with wavelength several orders of magnitude smaller than the atomic dimensions. This is achieved by coupling a superconducting qubit to surface acoustic waves at two points with separation on the order of 100 wavelengths. This approach is comp…
We study the laser-driven Dicke model beyond the rotating-wave approximation. For weak coupling of the system to environmental degrees of freedom the dissipative dynamics of the emitter-cavity system is described by the Floquet master equation. Projection of the system evolution onto the emitter degrees of freedom results in non-Markovian behavior. We quantify the non-Markovianity of the resulting emitter dynamics and show that this quantity can be used as an indicator of the dissipative quantum phase transition occurring at high driving amplitudes.
In this paper, we begin with a model of a $Λ$-type atom whose both transitions are chirally coupled to a waveguide and then extend the model to its giant-atom version. We investigate the single-photon scatterings of the giant-atom model in both the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes. It is shown that the chiral atom-waveguide couplings enable nonreciprocal, reflectionless, and efficient frequency conversion, while the giant-atom structure introduces intriguing interference effects to the scattering behaviors, such as ultra-narrow scattering windows. The chiral giant-atom model exhibits quite …
Giant atoms -- quantum emitters that couple to light at multiple discrete points -- are emerging as a new paradigm in quantum optics thanks to their many promising properties, such as decoherence-free interaction. While most previous work has considered giant atoms coupled to open continuous waveguides or a single giant atom coupled to a structured bath, here we study the interaction between two giant atoms mediated by a structured waveguide, e.g., a photonic crystal waveguide. This environment is characterized by a finite energy band and a band gap, which affect atomic dynamics beyond the Mar…
We study at the single-photon level the nonreciprocal excitation transfer between emitters coupled with a common waveguide. Non-Markovian retarded effects are taken into account due to the large separation distance between different emitter-waveguide coupling ports. It is shown that the excitation transfer between the emitters of a small-atom dimer can be obviously nonreciprocal by introducing between them a coherent coupling channel with nontrivial coupling phase. We prove that for dimer models the nonreciprocity cannot coexist with the decoherence-free giant-atom structure although the latte…
It is known that the superposition of two bound states in the continuum (BIC) leads to the phenomenon of an oscillating bound state, where excitations mediated by the continuum modes oscillate persistently. We perform exact calculations for the oscillating BICs in a 1D photonic lattice coupled to a "giant atom" at multiple points. Our work is significantly distinct from previous proposals of oscillating BICs in continuous waveguide systems due to the presence of a finite energy band contributing band-edge effects. In particular, we show that the bound states outside the energy band are detrime…
A quantum collision model (CM), also known as repeated interactions model, can be built from the standard microscopic framework where a system S is coupled to a white-noise bosonic bath under the rotating wave approximation, which typically results in Markovian dynamics. Here, we discuss how to generalize the CM construction to the case of frequency-dependent system-bath coupling, which defines a class of colored-noise baths. This leads to an intrinsically non-Markovian CM, where each ancilla (bath subunit) collides repeatedly with S at different steps. We discuss the illustrative example of a…
We investigate quantum synchronization and correlations of two qutrits in one non-Markovian environment using the hierarchy equation method. There is no direct interaction between two qutrits and each qutrit interacts with the same non-Markovian environment. The influence of the temperature of the bath, correlation time, and coupling strength between qutrits and bath on the quantum synchronzation and correlations of two qutrits are studied without the Markovian, Born, and rotating wave approximations. We also discuss the influence of dissipation and dephasing on the synchronization of two qutr…
Giant atoms provide a promising platform for engineering decoherence-free interactions which is a major task in modern quantum technologies. Here we study systematically how to implement complex decoherence-free interactions among giant atoms resorting to periodic coupling modulations and suitable arrangements of coupling points. We demonstrate that the phase of the modulation, which is tunable in experiments, can be encoded into the decoherence-free interactions, and thus enables phase-dependent dynamics when the giant atoms constitute an effective closed loop. Moreover, we consider the influ…
Non-Markovian time-evolution of quantum systems is a challenging problem, often mitigated by employing numerical methods or making simplifying assumptions. In this work, we address this problem in waveguide QED by developing a diagrammatic approach, which performs fully analytical non-Markovian time evolution of single-photon states. By revisiting Fermi's two atom problem, we tackle the impeding question of whether rotating-wave approximation violates causality in single-photon waveguide QED. Afterward, we introduce and prove the \emph{no upper half-plane poles (no-UHP) theorem}, which connect…

We study the decay dynamics of a two-level giant atom that is coupled to a waveguide with time-dependent coupling strengths. In the non-Markovian regime where the retardation effect cannot be ignored, we show that the dynamics of the atom depends on the atom-waveguide coupling strengths at an earlier time. This allows one to tailor the decay dynamics of the giant atom and even realize a stationary population revival with appropriate coupling modulations. Moreover, we demonstrate the possibility of simulating the quantum Zeno and quantum anti-Zeno effects in the giant-atom model with periodic c…
We explore signatures of the non-Markovianity in the time-resolved energy transfer processes for quantum open systems. Focusing on typical systems such as the exact solvable damped Jaynes-Cummings model and the general spin-boson model, we establish quantitative links between the time-resolved energy current and the symmetric logarithmic derivative quantum Fisher information (SLD-QFI) flow, one of measures quantifying the non-Markovianity, within the framework of non-Markovian master equations in time-local forms. From the relationships, we find in the damped Jaynes-Cummings model that the SLD…
Quantum optics with giant emitters has shown a new route for the observation and manipulation of non-Markovian properties in waveguide-QED. In this paper we extend the theory of giant atoms, hitherto restricted to the perturbative light-matter regime, to deal with the ultrastrong coupling regime. Using static and dynamical polaron methods we address the low energy subspace of a giant atom coupled to an Ohmic waveguide beyond the standard rotating wave approximation. We analyze the equilibrium properties of the system by computing the atomic frequency renormalization as a function of the coupli…
