We present a classical and quantum analysis of a particle confined in a three-dimensional paraboloidal cavity formed by two confocal paraboloids. Classically, the system is integrable and presents three independent constants of motion, namely, the energy, the $z$-component of the angular momentum, and a third dynamical constant associated with the paraboloidal geometry, which can be derived from the separability of the Hamilton--Jacobi equation. We derive closed-form analytical expressions for the actions, which allow us to determine the two conditions to get periodic closed trajectories. We classify these trajectories through the indices $(s,t,\ell)$. The caustic paraboloids that bound the motion provide a complete geometric characterization of admissible trajectories. Quantum mechanically, separability of the Schrödinger equation in parabolic coordinates yields eigenmodes described by Whittaker functions. We determine the energy spectrum and identify degeneracies arising not only from azimuthal symmetry but also from specific cavity deformations. A direct correspondence between classical trajectories and quantum eigenstates reveals that probability densities concentrate in the classically allowed region with controlled penetration into forbidden zones.
Supplementary information is presented on the recent work by Moonjoo Lee et al. on the sub-wavelength 3D imaging of the vacuum-field intensity in a cavity by using single atoms confined by a nanohole aperture as a nanoscopic probe.
In a recent study of the self-adjoint extensions of the Hamiltonian of a particle confined to a finite region of space, in which we generalized the Heisenberg uncertainty relation to a finite volume, we encountered bound states localized at the wall of the cavity. In this paper, we study this situation in detail both for a free particle and for a hydrogen atom centered in a spherical cavity. For appropriate values of the self-adjoint extension parameter, the bound states lo calized at the wall resonate with the standard hydrogen bound states. We also examine the accidental symmetry generated b…
We explore ground-state entanglement properties of helium atom confined at the center of an impenetrable spherical cavity of varying radius by using explicitly correlated Hylleraas-type basis set. Results for the dependencies of the von Neumann and linear entanglement entropic measures on the cavity radius are discussed in details. Some highly accurate numerical results for the von Neumann and linear entropy are reported for the first time. It is found that the transition to the strong confinement regime is manifested by the entropies as an appearance of the inflection points on their variatio…
We study a nonequilibrium equation of states of an ideal quantum gas confined in the cavity under a moving piston with a small but finite velocity in the case that the cavity wall suddenly begins to move at time origin. Confining to the thermally-isolated process, quantum non-adiabatic (QNA) contribution to Poisson's adiabatic equations and to Bernoulli's formula which bridges the pressure and internal energy is elucidated. We carry out a statistical mean of the non-adiabatic (time-reversal-symmetric) force operator found in our preceding paper (K. Nakamura et al, Phys. Rev. E Vol.83, 041133, …
We apply a microscopic theory of exciton-polaritons in cavity-confined monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides including both optical polarizations in the monolayer plane, allowing to describe how chiral cavity photons interact with the valley degrees of freedom of the active material. Upon polariton formation, the degenerate excitons inhabiting the two inequivalent valleys are shown to assume bonding and antibonding superpositions as a result of cavity-mediated intravalley interactions combined with intervalley Coulomb interactions. This is representative of a polariton-induced coherent mi…
We present a microscopic semi-analytical theory for the description of organic molecules interacting strongly with a cavity mode. Exciton-vibration coupling within the molecule and exciton-cavity interaction are treated on an equal footing by employing a temperature-dependent variational approach. The interplay between strong exciton-vibration coupling and strong exciton-cavity coupling gives rise to a hybrid ground state, which we refer to as the lower polaron polariton. Explicit expressions for the ground-state wave function, the zero-temperature quasiparticle weight of the lower polaron pol…
We show that the effective spin-spin interaction between three-level atoms confined in a multimode optical cavity is long-ranged and sign-changing, like the RKKY interaction; therefore, ensembles of such atoms subject to frozen-in positional randomness can realize spin systems having disordered and frustrated interactions. We argue that, whenever the atoms couple to sufficiently many cavity modes, the cavity-mediated interactions give rise to a spin glass. In addition, we show that the quantum dynamics of cavity-confined spin systems is that of a Bose-Hubbard model with strongly disordered hop…
We developed a theory of electron scattering by a short-range repulsive potential in a cavity. In the regime of ultrastrong electron coupling to the cavity electromagnetic field, the vacuum fluctuations of the field result in the dynamical stabilization of a quasistationary polariton state confined in the core of the repulsive potential. When the energy of a free electron coincides with the energy of the confined state, the extremely efficient resonant nonelastic scattering of the electron accompanied by emission of a cavity photon appears. This effect is discussed as a basis for possible free…
With a highly coherent, optically addressable electron spin, the nitrogen vacancy (NV) centre in diamond is a promising candidate for a node in a quantum network. However, the NV centre is a poor source of coherent single photons owing to a long radiative lifetime, a small branching ratio into the zero-phonon line (ZPL) and a poor extraction efficiency out of the high-index host material. In principle, these three shortcomings can be addressed by resonant coupling to a single mode of an optical cavity. Utilising the weak-coupling regime of cavity electrodynamics, resonant coupling between the …
We consider a gedanken experiment with a beam of atoms in their ground state that are accelerated through a single-mode microwave cavity. We show that taking into account of the ''counter-rotating'' terms in the interaction Hamiltonian leads to the excitation of an atom with simultaneous emission of a photon into a field mode. In the case of a slow switching on of the interaction, the ratio of emission and absorption probabilities is exponentially small and is described by the Unruh factor. In the opposite case of sharp cavity boundaries the above ratio is much greater and radiation is produce…
We demonstrate the strong coupling of both magnons and phonons to terahertz (THz) frequency electromagnetic (EM) waves confined to a photonic crystal (PhC) cavity. Our cavity consists of a two-dimensional array of air-holes cut into a hybrid slab of ferroelectric lithium niobate (LiNbO$_3$) and erbium orthoferrite (ErFeO$_3$), a canted antiferromagnetic crystal. The phonons in LiNbO$_3$ and the magnons in ErFeO$_3$ are strongly coupled to the electric and magnetic field components of the confined EM wave, respectively. This leads to the formation of new cavity magnon-phonon-polariton modes, wh…
We investigate exciton transport through one-dimensional molecular aggregates interacting strongly with a cavity mode. Unlike several prior theoretical studies treating the monomers as simple two-level systems, exciton-vibration coupling is explicitly included in the description of open quantum dynamics of the system. In the framework of the Holstein-Tavis-Cummings model with truncated vibrational space, we investigate the steady-state exciton transfer through both a molecular dimer and longer molecular chains. For a molecular dimer, we find that vibration-assisted exciton transfer occurs at s…
We present a mechanism of energy concentration in a system composed by an optical cavity and a large number of strongly confined atoms, which cannot be described in the rotating wave approximation. The mechanism consists in the emission of photons through the cavity mirrors even in the absence of external driving.
We propose a scheme to generate cluster states of atomic qubits by using cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) and linear optics, in which each atom is confined in a resonant optical cavity with two orthogonally polarized modes. Our scheme is robust to imperfect factors such as dissipation, photon loss, and detector inefficiency. Discussions are made for experimental feasibility of our scheme.
We propose a method to study the quantum nonlinearity and observe the multiphoton transitions in a multiatom CQED system. We show that by inducing simultaneously destructive quantum interference for the single-photon and two-photon excitations in the CQED system, it is possible to observe the direct three-photon excitation of the higher-order ladder states of the CQED system. We report an experiment with cold Rb atoms confined in an optical cavity and demonstrate such interference control of the multi-photon excitations of the CQED system. The observed nonlinear excitation of the CQED ladder s…
We propose schemes for the unconditional preparation of a two-mode squeezed state of effective bosonic modes realized in a pair of atomic ensembles interacting collectively with optical cavity and laser fields. The scheme uses Raman transitions between stable atomic ground states and under ideal conditions produces pure entangled states in the steady state. The scheme works both for ensembles confined within a single cavity and for ensembles confined in separate, cascaded cavities.
In distributed quantum information processing, flying photons entangle matter qubits confined in cavities. However, when a matter qubit is homogeneously broadened, the strong-coupling regime of cavity QED is typically required, which is hard to realize in actual experimental setups. Here, we show that a high-fidelity entanglement operation is possible even in the weak-coupling regime in which dampings (dephasing, spontaneous emission, and cavity leakage) overwhelm the coherent coupling between a qubit and the cavity. Our proposal enables distributed quantum information processing to be perform…
We investigate the dynamics of a particle in a confined periodic system---a time-dependent oscillator confined by infinitely high and moving walls---and focus on the evolution of the phase of the wavefunction. It is shown that, for some specific initial states in this potential, the phase of the wavefunction throughout the cavity depends on the walls motion. We further elaborate a thought experiment based on interferences devised to detect this form of single-particle nonlocality from a relative phase. We point out that, within the non-relativistic formalism based on the Schrödinger equation (…
We investigate the emission properties of a single semiconductor quantum dot deterministically coupled to a confined optical mode in the weak coupling regime. A strong pulling, broadening and narrowing of the cavity mode emission is evidenced when changing the spectral detuning between the emitter and the cavity. These features are theoretically accounted for by considering the phonon assisted emission of the quantum dot transition. These observations highlight a new situation for cavity quantum electrodynamics involving spectrally broad emitters.
We present the design and implementation of a trapped ion cavity QED system. A single ytterbium ion is confined by a micron-scale ion trap inside a 2 mm optical cavity. The ion is coherently pumped by near resonant laser light while the cavity output is monitored as a function of pump intensity and cavity detuning. We observe a Purcell enhancement of scattered light into the solid angle subtended by the optical cavity, as well as a three-peak structure arising from strongly driving the atom. This system can be integrated into existing atom{photon quantum network protocols and is a pathway towa…
We investigate polariton quantum correlations in a coherently driven box cavity in the low driving regime, with a particular focus on accounting for the polarization degree of freedom. The possibility of having different interaction strengths between co- and cross-circularly polarized polaritons as well as a realistic linear-polarization splitting allows one to model the system as two coupled nonlinear resonators with both self- and cross-Kerr-like nonlinearities, thus making our results potentially relevant for other experimental platforms. Within an effective wave-function approach, we obtai…
Controlling the quantum field statistics of confined light is a long-standing goal in integrated photonics. We show that by coupling molecular vibrations with a confined mid-infrared cavity vacuum, the photocount and quadrature field statistics of the cavity field can be reversibly manipulated over sub-picosecond timescales. The mechanism involves changing the cavity resonance frequency through a modulation of the dielectric response of the cavity materials using femtosecond UV pulses. For a single anharmonic molecular vibration in an infrared cavity under ultrastrong coupling conditions, the …
We present the realization of a combined trapped-ion and optical cavity system, in which a single Yb^+ ion is confined by a micron-scale ion trap inside a 230 mum-long optical fiber cavity. We characterize the spatial ion-cavity coupling and measure the ion-cavity coupling strength using a cavity-stimulated Lambda-transition. Owing to the small mode volume of the fiber resonator, the coherent coupling strength between the ion and a single photon exceeds the natural decay rate of the dipole moment. This system can be integrated into ion-photon quantum networks and is a step towards cavity quant…
We investigate the influence of periodically time-modulated cavity frequency on the generation of atomic squeezed states for a collection of N two-level atoms confined in a non-stationary cavity with a moving mirror. We show that the two-photon character of the field generated from the vacuum state of field plays a significant role in producing the atomic or spin squeezed states. We further show that the maximum amount of persistent atomic squeezing is obtained for the initial cavity field prepared in the vacuum state.
We propose an interface between the spin of a photon and the spin of an electron confined in a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity operating in the weak coupling regime. This interface, based on spin selective photon reflection from the cavity, can be used to construct a CNOT gate, a multi-photon entangler and a photonic Bell-state analyzer. Finally, we analyze experimental feasibility, concluding that the schemes can be implemented with current technology.
The energy and wave function of a harmonically confined two-electron system coupled to light is calculated by separating the wave functions of the relative and center of mass (CM) motions. The relative motion wave function has a known quasi-analytical solution. The light only couples to the CM variable and the coupled equation can be solved with diagonalization without approximations. The approach works for any coupling strength. Examples of wave functions of light-matter hybrid states are presented.
We present evidence of cavity quantum electrodynamics from a sparse density of strongly quantum-confined Pb-chalcogenide nanocrystals (between 1 and 10) approaching single-dot levels on moderately high-Q mesoscopic silicon optical cavities. Operating at important near-infrared (1500-nm) wavelengths, large enhancements are observed from devices and strong modifications of the QD emission are achieved. Saturation spectroscopy of coupled QDs is observed at 77K, highlighting the modified nanocrystal dynamics for quantum information processing.
We present coherent reflection spectroscopy on a charge and DC Stark tunable quantum dot embedded in a high-quality and externally mode-matched microcavity. The addition of an exciton to a single-electron charged quantum dot forms a trion that interacts with the microcavity just below strong coupling regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics. Such an integrated, monolithic system is a crucial step towards the implementation of scalable hybrid quantum information schemes that are based on an efficient interaction between a single photon and a confined electron spin.
The pseudospin of heavy-holes (HHs) confined in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) represents a promising candidate for a fast and robust qubit. While hole spin manipulation by a classical electric field utilizing the Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (SOI) has been demonstrated, our work explores cavity-based qubit manipulation and coupling schemes for inversion-symmetric crystals forming a planar HH QD. Choosing the exemplary material Germanium (Ge), we derive an effective cavity-mediated ground state spin coupling that harnesses the cubic Rashba SOI. In addition, we propose an optimal set of…
The present paper illustrates the realization of an atom-optomechanical system where an atomic ensemble is confined in a ring optomechanical cavity consisting of a fixed mirror and two movable ones. An analysis of the dynamics and the linearization of the equations allows to derive the multimode covariance matrix. Under realistic experimental conditions, we numerically simulate the steady-state bipartite and tripartite continuous variable entanglement using the logarithmic negativity, and analyze the shared entanglement in the multimode system. The introduction of the atomic medium allows to o…
We present an analytic solution of bound states in the continuum (BICs) for photons and atoms in a one-dimensional coupled cavity array. These bound states are formed by two ensembles of twolevel atoms confined in separated cavities of the array. We show that in the regime where the photon hopping rate between neighboring cavities is high compared with the collective Rabi frequency, the BIC corresponds to a subradiant collective atomic state in which the two ensembles of atoms are strongly entangled. On the other hand in the low photon hopping rate regime, the BIC behaves a quantum cavity in w…
We propose a method for engineering spin dynamics in ensembles of integer-spin atoms confined within a high-finesse optical cavity. Our proposal uses cavity-assisted Raman transitions to engineer a Dicke model for integer-spin atoms, which, in a dispersive limit, reduces to effective atom-atom interactions within the ensemble. This scheme offers a promising and flexible new avenue for the exploration of a wide range of spinor many-body physics. As an example of this, we present results showing that this method can be used to generate spin-nematic squeezing in an ensemble of spin-1 atoms. With …
Recent technological advances in cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) are paving the way to utilise multiple quantum emitters confined in a single optical cavity. In such systems it is crucially important to control the quantum mechanical coupling of individual emitters to the cavity mode. In this regard, combining ion trap technologies with CQED provides a particularly promising approach due to the well-established motional control over trapped ions. Here we experimentally demonstrate coupling of up to five trapped ions in a string to a high-finesse optical cavity. By changing the axial posi…
We describe a design to implement a two-qubit geometric phase gate, by which a pair of electrons confined in adjacent quantum dots are entangled. The entanglement is a result of the Coulomb exchange interaction between the optically excited exciton-polaritons and the localized spins. This optical coupling, resembling the electron-electron Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) inter- actions, offers high speed, high fidelity two-qubit gate operation with moderate cavity quality factor Q. The errors due to the finite lifetime of the polaritons can be minimized by optimizing the optical pulse para…
We consider a gas of ultracold two-level atoms confined in a cavity, taking into account for atomic center-of-mass motion and cavity mode variations. We use the generalized Dicke model, and analyze separately the cases of a Gaussian, and a standing wave mode shape. Owing to the interplay between external motional energies of the atoms and internal atomic and field energies, the phase-diagrams exhibit novel features not encountered in the standard Dicke model, such as the existence of first and second order phase transitions between normal and superradiant phases. Due to the quantum description…
Cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) investigates the interaction between light confined in a resonator and particles, such as atoms. In recent years, CQED experiments have reached the optical domain resulting in many interesting applications in the realm of quantum information processing. For many of these application it is necessary to overcome limitations imposed by photon loss. In this context whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators have obtained significant interest. Besides their small mode volume and their ultra high quality, they also exhibit favorable polarization properties that gi…
We consider two qubits interacting by means of an optical cavity, where each qubit is represented by a single electron spin confined to a quantum dot. It is known that electron spins in III-V semiconductor quantum dots are affected by the decoherence due to the hyperfine interaction with nuclear spins. Here we show that the interaction between two qubits is influenced by the Overhauser field as well. Starting from an unpolarizied nuclear ensemble, we investigate the dependance of the fidelities for two-qubit gates on the Overhauser field. We include the hyperfine interaction perturbatively to …
In this paper, we present a protocol to engineer upper-bounded and sliced Jaynes-Cummings and anti-Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonians in cavity quantum electrodynamics. In the upper-bounded Hamiltonians, the atom-field interaction is confined to a subspace of Fock states ranging from $\left\vert 0\right\rangle $ up to $\left\vert 4\right\rangle $, while in the sliced interaction the Fock subspace ranges from $\left\vert M\right\rangle $ up to $\left\vert M+4\right\rangle $. We also show how to build upper-bounded and sliced Liouvillians irrespective of engineering Hamiltonians. The upper-bounded and…
Quantum computers require technologies that offer both sufficient control over coherent quantum phenomena and minimal spurious interactions with the environment. We show, that photons confined to photonic crystals, and in particular to highly efficient waveguides formed from linear chains of defects doped with atoms can generate strong non-linear interactions which allow to implement both single and two qubit quantum gates. The simplicity of the gate switching mechanism, the experimental feasibility of fabricating two dimensional photonic crystal structures and integrability of this device wit…
We propose a scheme which can realize an extended two-component Bose-Hubbard model using polaritons confined in an array of optical cavities. In addition to the density-dependent interactions, this model also contains nonlinear coupling terms between the two components of the polariton. Using a mean-field calculation, we obtain the phase diagram which shows how these terms affect the transition between the Mott insulator and the superfluid phase. In addition, we employ both a perturbation approach and an exact diagonalization method to gain more insights into the phase diagram.
We theoretically propose a biphoton entanglement-enhanced multidimensional spectroscopic technique as a probe for the dissipative polariton dynamics in the ultrafast regime. It is applied to the cavity-confined monomeric photosynthetic complex that represents a prototypical multi-site excitonic quantum aggregate. The proposed technique is shown to be particularly sensitive to inter-manifold polariton coherence between the two and one-excitation subspaces. It is demonstrated to be able to monitor the dynamical role of cavity-mediated excitonic correlations, and dephasing in the presence of phon…

The millimeter wave (mm-wave) frequency band provides exciting prospects for quantum science and devices, since many high-fidelity quantum emitters, including Rydberg atoms, molecules and silicon vacancies, exhibit resonances near 100 GHz. High-Q resonators at these frequencies would give access to strong interactions between emitters and single photons, leading to rich and unexplored quantum phenomena at temperatures above 1K. We report a 3D mm-wave cavity with a measured single-photon internal quality factor of $3 \times 10^{7}$ and mode volume of $0.14 \times λ^3$ at $98.2$ GHz, sufficient …
We study in detail the dynamics of a non-stationary system composed of a Quantum Well confined in an optomechanical cavity. This system is investigated with classical and quantized motion of the cavity movable mirror. In both the cases, the cavity frequency is rapidly modulated in time. The resultant periodically modulated spectra is presented. In particular, we study the effect of two-photon process on the number of intracavity photons. The intensity of fluorescent light emitted by excitons in the quantum well is also examined for these non-stationary systems. It is observed that the initial …
Prospects for reaching persistent entanglement between two spatially separated atomic Bose-Einstein condensates are outlined. The system set-up comprises of two condensates loaded in an optical lattice, which, in return, is confined within a high-Q optical resonator. The system is driven by an external laser that illuminates the atoms such that photons can scatter into the cavity. In the superradiant phase a cavity field is established and we show that the emerging cavity mediated interactions between the two condensates is capable of entangling them despite photon losses. This macroscopic ato…
Cavity-polaritons in semiconductor microstructures have emerged as a promising system for exploring nonequilibrium dynamics of many-body systems. Key advances in this field, including the observation of polariton condensation, superfluidity, realization of topological photonic bands, and dissipative phase transitions, generically allow for a description based on a mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii formalism. While observation of polariton intensity squeezing and decoherence of a polarization entangled photon pair by a polariton condensate provide counter-examples, quantum effects in these experiment…
Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), the study of the interaction between quantized emitters and photons confined in an optical cavity, is an important tool for quantum science in computing, networking, and synthetic matter. In atomic cavity QED, this approach typically relies upon an ultra-high vacuum chamber that hosts a cold trapped atomic ensemble and an optical cavity. Upgrading the cavity necessitates a months-long laborious process of removing external optics, venting, replacing the resonator, baking, and replacing optics, constituting a substantial bottleneck to innovation in resonato…
We theoretically demonstrate the enhanced and dephasing immune squeezing in the resonance fluorescence of a single quantum dot (QD) confined to a pillar-microcavity and driven by a continuous wave laser. We employ a formalism based on Polaron master equation theory for incorporating the influence of exciton-phonon coupling quite accurately in the dot-cavity system. We show a significant enhancement of squeezing due to cavity coupling of the QD as compared to that of an ideal single two-level system in free space. Particularly, we show a four-fold enhancement in squeezing as compared to that of…
A major challenge in quantum optics and quantum information technology is to enhance the interaction between single photons and single quantum emitters. Highly engineered optical cavities are generally implemented requiring nanoscale fabrication precision. We demonstrate a fundamentally different approach in which disorder is used as a resource rather than a nuisance. We generate strongly confined Anderson-localized cavity modes by deliberately adding disorder to photonic crystal waveguides. The emission rate of a semiconductor quantum dot embedded in the waveguide is enhanced by a factor of 1…
We determine the quantum ground-state properties of ultracold bosonic atoms interacting with the mode of a high-finesse resonator. The atoms are confined by an external optical lattice, whose period is incommensurate with the cavity mode wave length, and are driven by a transverse laser, which is resonant with the cavity mode. While for pointlike atoms photon scattering into the cavity is suppressed, for sufficiently strong lasers quantum fluctuations can support the build-up of an intracavity field, which in turn amplifies quantum fluctuations. The dynamics is described by a Bose-Hubbard mode…
