The pseudospin of heavy-holes (HHs) confined in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) represents a promising candidate for a fast and robust qubit. While hole spin manipulation by a classical electric field utilizing the Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (SOI) has been demonstrated, our work explores cavity-based qubit manipulation and coupling schemes for inversion-symmetric crystals forming a planar HH QD. Choosing the exemplary material Germanium (Ge), we derive an effective cavity-mediated ground state spin coupling that harnesses the cubic Rashba SOI. In addition, we propose an optimal set of parameters which allows for Rabi frequencies in the MHz range, thus entering the strong coupling regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics.
We investigate pump-induced exciton inversion in a quantum-dot cavity system with continuous wave drive. Using a polaron-based master equation, we demonstrate excited-state populations above 0.9 for an InAs dot at a phonon bath temperature of 4K. In an exciton-driven system, the dominant mechanism is incoherent excitation from the phonon bath. For cavity driving, the mechanism is phonon-mediated switching between ground- and excited-state branches of the ladder of photon states, as quantum trajectory simulations clearly show. The exciton inversion as a function of detuning is found to be quali…
We study a model for a pair of qubits which interact with a single off-resonant cavity mode and, in addition, exhibit a direct inter-qubit coupling. Possible realizations for such a system include coupled superconducting qubits in a line resonator as well as exciton states or electron spin states of quantum dots in a cavity. The emergent dynamical phenomena are strongly dependent on the relative energy scales of the inter-qubit coupling strength, the coupling strength between qubits and cavity mode, and the cavity mode detuning. We show that the cavity mode dispersion enables a measurement of …
The recent realization of a coherent interface between a single electron in a silicon quantum dot and a single photon trapped in a superconducting cavity opens the way for implementing photon-mediated two-qubit entangling gates. In order to couple a spin to the cavity electric field some type of spin-charge hybridization is needed, which impacts spin control and coherence. In this work we propose a cavity-mediated two-qubit gate and calculate cavity-mediated entangling gate fidelities in the dispersive regime, accounting for errors due to the spin-charge hybridization, as well as photon- and p…
We propose the use of coherent control of a multi-qubit--cavity QED system in order to explore novel phase transition phenomena in a general class of multi-qubit--cavity systems. In addition to atomic systems, the associated super-radiant phase transitions should be observable in a variety of solid-state experimental systems, including the technologically important case of interacting quantum dots coupled to an optical cavity mode.
In this work we demonstrate theoretically how to use external laser field to control the population inversion of a single quantum dot exciton qubit in a nanocavity. We consider the Jaynes-Cummings model to describe the system, and the incoherent losses were take into account by using Lindblad operators. We have demonstrated how to prepare the initial state in a superposition of the exciton in the ground state and the cavity in a coherent state. The effects of exciton-cavity detuning, the laser-cavity detunings, the pulse area and losses over the qubit dynamics are analyzed. We also show how to…
We introduce a new multimode cavity QED architecture for superconducting circuits which can be used to implement photonic memories, more efficient Purcell filters, and quantum simulations of photonic materials. We show that qubit interactions mediated by multimode cavities can have exponentially improved contrast for two qubit gates without sacrificing gate speed. Using two-qubits coupled via a three-mode cavity system we spectroscopically observe multimode strong couplings up to 102MHz and demonstrate suppressed interactions off-resonance of 10kHz when the qubits are ~600MHz detuned from the …
We present an off-resonant excitation scheme that realizes pronounced stationary inversion in a two level system. The created inversion exploits a cavity-assisted two photon resonance to enhance the multi-photon regime of nonlinear cavity QED and survives even in a semiconductor environment, where the cavity decay rate is comparable to the cavity-dot coupling rate. Exciton populations of greater than 0.75 are obtained in the presence of realistic decay and pure dephasing. Quantum trajectory simulations and quantum master equation calculations help elucidate the underlying physics and delineate…
Quantum state transfer into a memory, state shuttling over long distances via a quantum bus, and high-fidelity readout are important tasks for quantum technology. Realizing these tasks is challenging in the presence of realistic couplings to an environment. Here, we introduce and assess protocols that can be used in cavity QED to perform high-fidelity quantum state transfer and fast quantum nondemolition qubit readout through Hamiltonian engineering. We show that high-fidelity state transfer between a cavity and a single qubit can be performed, even in the limit of strong dephasing due to inho…
We extend the approach of Ref. [Yu-xi Liu, L. F. Wei, and F. Nori, Europhys. Lett. 67, 941 (2004)] for preparing superposition states of a cavity field interacting with a superconducting charge qubit. We study effects of the nonlinearity on the creation of such states. We show that the main contribution of nonlinear effects is to shorten the time necessary to build the superposition.
The main limitation to the high-fidelity quantum control of spins in semiconductors is the presence of strongly fluctuating fields arising from the nuclear spin bath of the host material. We demonstrate here a substantial improvement in single-qubit gate fidelities for an electron spin qubit bound to a $^{31}$P atom in natural silicon, by applying adiabatic inversion instead of narrow-band pulses. We achieve an inversion fidelity of 97%, and we observe signatures in the spin resonance spectra and the spin coherence time that are consistent with the presence of an additional exchange-coupled do…
Although single and two-qubit gates are sufficient for universal quantum computation, single-shot three-qubit gates greatly simplify quantum error correction schemes and algorithms. We design fast, high-fidelity three-qubit entangling gates based on microwave pulses for transmon qubits coupled through a superconducting resonator. We show that when interqubit frequency differences are comparable to single-qubit anharmonicities, errors occur primarily through a single unwanted transition. This feature enables the design of fast three-qubit gates based on simple analytical pulse shapes that are e…
Noise affects the coherence of qubits and thereby places a bound on the performance of quantum computers. We theoretically study a generic two-level system with fluctuating control parameters in a photonic cavity and find that basic features of the noise spectral density are imprinted in the transient transmission through the cavity. We obtain analytical expressions for generic noise and proceed to study the cases of quasistatic, white and $1/f^α$ noise in more detail. Additionally, we propose a way of extracting the spectral density for arbitrary noise in a frequency band only bounded by the …
In a circuit quantum eletrodynamic system, a chain of N qubits inhomogeneously coupled to a cavity field forms a mesoscopic quasi-lattice, which is characterized by its degree of deformation from a normal lattice. This deformation is a function of the relative spacing, that is the ratio of the qubit spacing to the cavity wavelength. A polariton mode arise in the quasi-lattice as the dressed mode of the lattice excitation by the cavity photon. We show that the transition probability of the polariton mode is either enhanced or decreased compared to that of a single qubit by the deformation, givi…
We analyze the use of a driven nonlinear cavity to make a weak continuous measurement of a dispersively-coupled qubit. We calculate the backaction dephasing rate and measurement rate beyond leading-order perturbation theory using a phase-space approach which accounts for cavity noise squeezing. Surprisingly, we find that increasing the coupling strength beyond the regime describable by leading-order perturbation theory (i.e. linear response) allows one to come significantly closer to the quantum limit on the measurement efficiency. We interpret this behaviour in terms of the non-Gaussian photo…
We resolve phonon number states in the spectrum of a superconducting qubit coupled to a multimode acoustic cavity. Crucial to this resolution is the sharp frequency dependence in the qubit-phonon interaction engineered by coupling the qubit to surface acoustic waves in two locations separated by $\sim40$ acoustic wavelengths. In analogy to double-slit diffraction, the resulting self-interference generates high-contrast frequency structure in the qubit-phonon interaction. We observe this frequency structure both in the coupling rate to multiple cavity modes and in the qubit spontaneous emission…
We investigate the effectiveness of a microwave cavity as a mediator of interactions between two resonant exchange (RX) qubits in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) over long distances, limited only by the extension of the cavity. Our interaction model includes the orthonormalized Wannier orbitals constructed from Fock-Darwin states under the assumption of a harmonic QD confinement potential. We calculate the qubit-cavity coupling strength in a Jaynes Cummings Hamiltonian, and find that dipole transitions between two states with an asymmetric charge configuration constitute the relevant RX quoit…
We describe a design to implement a two-qubit geometric phase gate, by which a pair of electrons confined in adjacent quantum dots are entangled. The entanglement is a result of the Coulomb exchange interaction between the optically excited exciton-polaritons and the localized spins. This optical coupling, resembling the electron-electron Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) inter- actions, offers high speed, high fidelity two-qubit gate operation with moderate cavity quality factor Q. The errors due to the finite lifetime of the polaritons can be minimized by optimizing the optical pulse para…
We describe a chip-based, solid-state analogue of cavity-QED utilizing acoustic phonons instead of photons. We show how long-lived and tunable acceptor impurity states in silicon nanomechanical cavities can play the role of a matter non-linearity for coherent phonons just as, e.g., the Josephson qubit plays in circuit-QED. Both strong coupling (number of Rabi oscillations ~ 100) and strong dispersive coupling (0.1-2 MHz) regimes can be reached in cavities in the 1-20 GHz range, enabling the control of single phonons, phonon-phonon interactions, dispersive phonon readout of the acceptor qubit, …
The coherent dynamics of relaxing spin qubits driven by a classical bichromatic field comprising a strong resonant component and a weaker component with a frequency close to the strong-field Rabi frequency is studied. The double dressing by the bichromatic field modifies dephasing and dissipation processes. We demonstrate that detuning of the weaker-field frequency from the strong-field Rabi frequency prolongs the decay of Rabi oscillations between some doubly dressed states. The sensitivity of Rabi oscillations to the modified detuning-dependent relaxation is illustrated for nitrogen-vacancy …
We investigate theoretically how the spectroscopy of an ancillary qubit can probe cavity (circuit) QED ground states containing photons. We consider three classes of systems (Dicke, Tavis-Cummings and Hopfield-like models), where non-trivial vacua are the result of ultrastrong coupling between N two-level systems and a single-mode bosonic field. An ancillary qubit detuned with respect to the boson frequency is shown to reveal distinct spectral signatures depending on the type of vacua. In particular, the Lamb shift of the ancilla is sensitive to both ground state photon population and correlat…
A key ingredient for a quantum network is an interface between stationary quantum bits and photons, which act as flying qubits for interactions and communication. Photonic crystal architectures are promising platforms for enhancing the coupling of light to solid state qubits. Quantum dots can be integrated into a photonic crystal, with optical transitions coupling to photons and spin states forming a long-lived quantum memory. Many researchers have now succeeded in coupling these emitters to photonic crystal cavities, but there have been no demonstrations of a functional spin qubit and quantum…
We report the experimental realization of a 3D capacitively-shunt superconducting flux qubit with long coherence times. At the optimal flux bias point, the qubit demonstrates energy relaxation times in the 60-90 $μ$s range, and Hahn-echo coherence time of about 80 $μ$s which can be further improved by dynamical decoupling. Qubit energy relaxation can be attributed to quasiparticle tunneling, while qubit dephasing is caused by flux noise away from the optimal point. Our results show that 3D c-shunt flux qubits demonstrate improved performance over other types of flux qubits which is advantageou…
We demonstrate quantum control and entanglement generation using a Landau-Zener beam splitter formed by coupling two transmon qubits to a superconducting cavity. Single passage through the cavity-mediated qubit-qubit avoided crossing provides a direct test of the Landau-Zener transition formula. Consecutive sweeps result in Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg interference patterns, with a visibility that can be sensitively tuned by adjusting the level velocity through both the non-adiabatic and adiabatic regimes. Two-qubit state tomography indicates that a Bell state can be generated via a single passage…
We demonstrate how heating of an environment can invert the line shape of a driven cavity. We consider a superconducting coplanar cavity coupled to multiple artificial atoms. The measured cavity transmission is characterized by Fano-type resonances with a shape that is continuously tunable by bias current through nearby (magnetic flux) control lines. In particular, the same dispersive shift of the microwave cavity can be observed as a peak or a dip. We find that this Fano-peak inversion is possible due to a tunable interference between a microwave transmission through a background, with reacti…
We propose entangling operations based on the energy curvature couplings of encoded spin qubits to a superconducting cavity, exploring the non-linear qubit response to a gate voltage variation. For a two-qubit ($n$-qubit) entangling gate we explore acquired geometric phases via a time-modulated longitudinal $σ_z$-coupling, offering gate times of 10s of ns even when the qubits and the cavity are far detuned. No dipole moment is necessary: the qubit transverse $σ_x$-coupling to the resonator is zero at the full sweet spot of the encoded spin qubit of interest (a triple quantum dot three-electron…
We propose how to generate macroscopic quantum superposition states using a microwave cavity containing a superconducting charge qubit. Based on the measurement of charge states, we show that the superpositions of two macroscopically distinguishable coherent states of a single-mode cavity field can be generated by a controllable interaction between a cavity field and a charge qubit. After such superpositions of the cavity field are created, the interaction can be switched off by the classical magnetic field, and there is no information transfer between the cavity field and the charge qubit. We…
The dispersive coupling between a qubit and a cavity mode is widely used for performing non-destructive readout of the qubit state. In this approach, it is typically required that the dispersive strong coupling regime is achieved. Here we show that the use of an auxiliary cavity mode reduces by orders of magnitude the required value of the dispersive coupling, for a given decay rate of the cavity mode. The analysis is performed within the input-output formalism, in terms of the photon scattering matrix elements and of the signal-to-noise ratio. We derive simple analytical expressions for the o…
While long spin coherence times and efficient single-qubit quantum control have been implemented successfully in nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, the controlled coupling of remote NV spin qubits remains challenging. Here, we propose and analyze a controlled-phase (CPHASE) gate for the spins of two NV centers embedded in a common optical cavity and driven by two off-resonant lasers. In combination with previously demonstrated single-qubit gates, CPHASE allows for arbitrary quantum computations. The coupling of the NV spin to the cavity mode is based upon Raman transitions via the NV ex…
We reveal the existence of polariton soliton solutions in the array of weakly coupled optical cavities, each containing an ensemble of interacting qubits. An effective complex Ginzburg-Landau equation is derived in the continuum limit taking into account the effects of cavity field dissipation and qubit dephasing. We have shown that an enhancement of the induced nonlinearity can be achieved by two order of the magnitude with a negative interaction strength which implies a large negative qubit-field detuning as well. Bright solitons are found to be supported under perturbations only in the uppe…
We theoretically study a circuit QED architecture based on a superconducting flux qubit directly coupled to the center conductor of a coplanar waveguide transmission-line resonator. As already shown experimentally [Abdumalikov et al. Phys. Rev. B 78, 180502 (2008)], the strong coupling regime of cavity QED can readily be achieved by optimizing the local inductance of the resonator in the vicinity of the qubit. In addition to yielding stronger coupling with respect to other proposals for flux qubit based circuit QED, this approach leads to a qubit-resonator coupling strength g which does not sc…
We propose a scheme to implement the two-qubit quantum phase gate with Josephson-junction charge qubits in a thermal cavity. In this scheme, the photon-number-dependent parts in the time evolution operator are canceled at the special time. Thus the scheme is insensitive to the thermal field. We also demonstrate that the scheme can be used to generate maximally entangled state of many Josephson-junction charge qubits
We consider two qubits interacting by means of an optical cavity, where each qubit is represented by a single electron spin confined to a quantum dot. It is known that electron spins in III-V semiconductor quantum dots are affected by the decoherence due to the hyperfine interaction with nuclear spins. Here we show that the interaction between two qubits is influenced by the Overhauser field as well. Starting from an unpolarizied nuclear ensemble, we investigate the dependance of the fidelities for two-qubit gates on the Overhauser field. We include the hyperfine interaction perturbatively to …
We present the realization of a cavity quantum electrodynamics setup in which photons of strongly different lifetimes are engineered in different harmonic modes of the same cavity. We achieve this in a superconducting transmission line resonator with superconducting qubits coupled to the different modes. One cavity mode is strongly coupled to a detection line for qubit state readout, while a second long lifetime mode is used for photon storage and coherent quantum operations. We demonstrate sideband based measurement of photon coherence, generation of n photon Fock states and the scaling of th…
Superconducting circuits are promising candidates for constructing quantum bits (qubits) in a quantum computer; single-qubit operations are now routine, and several examples of two qubit interactions and gates having been demonstrated. These experiments show that two nearby qubits can be readily coupled with local interactions. Performing gates between an arbitrary pair of distant qubits is highly desirable for any quantum computer architecture, but has not yet been demonstrated. An efficient way to achieve this goal is to couple the qubits to a quantum bus, which distributes quantum informati…
Microwave cavities with high quality factors enable coherent coupling of distant quantum systems. Virtual photons lead to a transverse exchange interaction between qubits, when they are non-resonant with the cavity but resonant with each other. We experimentally probe the inverse scaling of the inter-qubit coupling with the detuning from a cavity mode and its proportionality to the qubit-cavity interaction strength. We demonstrate that the enhanced coupling at higher frequencies is mediated by multiple higher-harmonic cavity modes. Moreover, in the case of resonant qubits, the symmetry propert…
We theoretically study measurement induced-dephasing of a superconducting qubit in the circuit QED architecture and compare the results to those obtained experimentally by Schuster {\it et al.}, [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 123602 (2005)]. Strong coupling of the qubit to the resonator leads to a significant ac-Stark shift of the qubit transition frequency. As a result, quantum fluctuations in the photon number populating the resonator cause dephasing of the qubit. We find good agreement between the predicted line shape of the qubit spectrum and the experimental results. Furthermore, in the strong dis…
We provide a thorough theoretical analysis of qubit state measurement in a setup where a driven, parametrically-coupled cavity system is directly coupled to the qubit, with one of the cavities having a weak Kerr nonlinearity. Such a system could be readily realized using circuit QED architectures. We demonstrate that this setup is capable in the standard linear-response regime of both producing a highly amplified output signal while at the same time achieving near quantum-limited performance: the measurement backaction on the qubit is near the minimal amount required by the uncertainty princip…
We investigate the measurement-induced dephasing of a qubit coupled with a single-mode cavity in the vacuum limit. Dephasing of the qubit state takes place through the ntanglement of the qubit and the single probe photon sent to the cavity, while the cavity mode never occupies a photon. We find that the qubit state is dephased even if the cavity is always in the vacuum state. This dephasing is caused purely by the interaction between the qubit and the vacuum field. We also show that this vacuum-fluctuation-induced dephasing takes place much faster than the spontaneous decay of the qubit excite…
We consider a superconducting qubit coupled to the nonstationary transmission line cavity with modulated frequency taking into account energy dissipation. Previously, it was demonstrated that in the case of a single nonadiabatical modulation of a cavity frequency there are two channels of a two-level system excitation which are due to the absorption of Casimir photons and due to the counterrotating wave processes responsible for the dynamical Lamb effect. We show that the parametric periodical modulation of the resonator frequency can increase dramatically the excitation probability. Remarkabl…
We propose a realizable architecture using one-dimensional transmission line resonators to reach the strong coupling limit of cavity quantum electrodynamics in superconducting electrical circuits. The vacuum Rabi frequency for the coupling of cavity photons to quantized excitations of an adjacent electrical circuit (qubit) can easily exceed the damping rates of both the cavity and the qubit. This architecture is attractive both as a macroscopic analog of atomic physics experiments and for quantum computing and control, since it provides strong inhibition of spontaneous emission, potentially le…

We investigate coupling an encoded spin qubit to a microwave resonator via qubit energy level curvature versus gate voltage. This approach enables quantum non-demolition readout with strength of tens to hundred MHz all while the qubit stays at its full sweet-spot to charge noise, with zero dipole moment. A "dispersive-like" spin readout approach similar to circuit-QED but avoiding the Purcell effect is proposed. With the addition of gate voltage modulation, selective longitudinal readout and n-qubit entanglement-by-measurement are possible.
We investigate the ability of selective cavity coupling to a topological chain for tailoring the connectivity of Majorana fermions. We show how topological qubits (TQs), associated with non-local Majorana fermion pairing, can be moved from the edge to the bulk of a topological chain through selective access to light-matter interaction with specific physical sites. In particular, we present a comprehensive DMRG study of ground-state features in different chain-cavity coupling geometries and validate analytical insights in the strong coupling regime. This new kind of Majorana fermion correlation…
We study the dynamics and decoherence of a system of two strongly driven qubits in a dissipative cavity. The two qubits have no direct interaction and are individually off-resonantly coupled to a single mode of quantized radiation. We derive analytical solutions to the Lindblad-type master equation and study the evolution of the entanglement of this system. We show that with non-zero detuning between the quantum and classical fields, the initial decay of the entanglement is followed by its revival periodic in time. We show that different Bell states follow evolutions with different rates.
We distinguish different mechanisms for population inversion in flux qubits driven by dc+ac magnetic fields. We show that for driving amplitudes such that there are Landau-Zener-Stückelberg intereferences, it is possible to have population inversion solely mediated by the environmental bath at long driving times. We study the effect of the resonant frequency $Ω_p$ of the measuring circuit, finding different regimes for the asymptotic population of the state of the flux qubit. By tailoring $Ω_p$ the degree of population inversion can be controlled. Our studies are based on realistic simulations…
The thermoelectric effect in a quantum dot system connected to two electron reservoirs in the presence of a photon cavity is investigated using a quantum master equation in the steady-state regime. If a quantized photon field is applied to the quantum dot system, an extra channel, the photon replica states, are formed leading to a generation of a photon-induced thermoelectric current. We observe that the photon replica states contribute to the transport irrespective of the direction of the thermal gradient. In the off-resonance regime, when the photon energy is smaller than the energy differen…
In this paper, we investigate thermal entanglement in a superconducting-quantum-interference-device qubit coupled to a cavity field. We show that the entanglement can be manipulated by varying temperature and an effective controlling parameter $B$ which depends on the external field and characteristic parameters of the system. We find that there exists a critical value of the controlling parameter $B_c$. Under a fixed temperature, increasing $B$ can increase entanglement in the regime of $B<B_c$, while the entanglement decreases with increasing $B$ in the regime of $B>B_c$.
A natural atom placed into a cavity with time-dependent parameters can be parametrically excited due to the interaction with the quantized photon mode. One of the channels of such a process is the dynamical Lamb effect, induced by a nonadiabatic modulation of atomic level Lamb shift. However, in experiments with natural atoms it is quite difficult to isolate this effect from other mechanisms of atom excitation. We point out that a transmission line cavity coupled with a superconducting qubit (artificial macroscopic atom) provides a unique platform for the observation of the dynamical Lamb effe…
Hole-spins localized in semiconductor structures, such as quantum dots or defects, serve to the realization of efficient gate-tunable solid-state quantum bits. Here we study two electrically driven spin $3/2$ holes coupled to the electromagnetic field of a microwave cavity. We show that the interplay between the non-Abelian Berry phases generated by local time-dependent electrical fields and the shared cavity photons allows for fast manipulation, detection, and long-range entanglement of the hole-spin qubits in the absence of any external magnetic field. Owing to its geometrical structure, suc…
A network of quantum-mechanical systems showing long lived phase coherence of its quantum states could be used for processing quantum information. As with classical information processing, a quantum processor requires information bits (qubits) that can be independently addressed and read out, long-term memory elements to store arbitrary quantum states, and the ability to transfer quantum information through a coherent communication bus accessible to a large number of qubits. Superconducting qubits made with scalable microfabrication techniques are a promising candidate for the realization of a…
Entangled multi-qubit states may be generated through a dispersive collective QND measurement of superconducting qubits coupled to a microwave transmission line resonator. Using the quantum trajectory approach, we analyze the stochastic measurement traces that would be observed in experiments. We illustrate the synthesis of three-qubit W- and GHZ-states, and we analyze how the fidelity and the entanglement evolve in time during the measurement. We discuss the influence of decoherence and relaxation, as well as of imperfect control over experimental parameters. We show that the desired states c…
