This work investigates the critical behavior of one-dimensional systems with long-range (LR) interactions, focusing on the crossover to short-range (SR) universality. Through large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of self-avoiding Lévy flights on a 1D lattice, we compute the anomalous dimension η, the correlation length exponent ν, and the susceptibility exponent γacross a wide range of LR decay parameters σ. Our results provide strong numerical evidence that supports Sak's scenario. They identify the crossover at σ^* = 1 and demonstrate the continuity of critical exponents across this point, with strong corrections to scaling. The study also reveals deviations from Flory-type scaling predictions and discusses the limitations of effective dimension approaches in general. These findings clarify the nature of the LR-SR crossover in low-dimensional systems and open avenues for exploring criticality in disordered and complex networks.
It is well know that systems with an interaction decaying as a power of the distance may have critical exponents that are different from those of short-range systems. The boundary between long-range and short-range is known, however the behavior in the crossover region is not well understood. In this paper we propose a general form for the crossover function and we compute it in a particular limit. We compare our predictions with the results of numerical simulations for two-dimensional long-range percolation.
We investigate the influence of the range of interactions in the two-dimensional bond percolation model, by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We locate the phase transitions for several interaction ranges, as expressed by the number $z$ of equivalent neighbors. We also consider the $z \to \infty$ limit, i.e., the complete graph case, where percolation bonds are allowed between each pair of sites, and the model becomes mean-field-like. All investigated models with finite $z$ are found to belong to the short-range universality class. There is no evidence of a tricritical point separating the sho…
A spectral investigation of criticality and crossover effects in two and three dimensions: Short timescales with small systems in minute random matrices
The $d$-dimensional long-range Ising model, defined by spin-spin interactions decaying with the distance as the power $1/r^{d+s}$, admits a second order phase transition with continuously varying critical exponents. At $s = s_*$, the phase transition crosses over to the usual short-range universality class. The standard field-theoretic description of this family of models is strongly coupled at the crossover. We find a new description, which is instead weakly coupled near the crossover, and use it to compute critical exponents. The existence of two complementary UV descriptions of the same lon…
Recently, it has been found that an effective long-range interaction is realized among local bistable variables (spins) in systems where the elastic interaction causes ordering of the spins. In such systems, generally we expect both long-range and short-range interactions to exist. In the short-range Ising model, the correlation length diverges at the critical point. In contrast, in the long-range interacting model the spin configuration is always uniform and the correlation length is zero. As long as a system has non-zero long-range interactions, it shows criticality in the mean-field univers…
We study the phase diagram of an elastic interaction model for spin crossover (SC) materials with antiferromagnetic-like short-range interactions. In this model, the interplay between the short-range interaction and the long-range interaction of elastic origin causes complex phase transitions. For relatively weak elastic interactions, the phase diagram is characterized by tricritical points, at which antiferromagnetic (AF) -like and ferromagnetic (F) -like spinodal lines and a critical line merge. On the other hand, for relatively strong elastic interactions, unusual "horn structures," which a…
Dynamical detection of quantum phases and phase transitions (QPT) in quenched systems with experimentally convenient initial states is a topic of interest from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. Quenched from polarized states, longitudinal magnetization decays exponentially to zero in time for the short-range transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) and hence, has a featureless steady state regime, which prevents it from exhibiting dynamical phase transitions of type-I. In this paper, we ask whether the transient regimes of such non-equilibrium processes probed by single-site observabl…
We investigate the ordering dynamics of the voter model with time-delayed interactions. The dynamical process in the $d$-dimensional lattice is shown to be equivalent to the first passage problem of a random walker in the $(d+1)$-dimensional strip of a finite width determined by the delay time. The equivalence reveals that the time delay leads to the dimensional crossover from the $(d+1)$-dimensional scaling behavior at short time to the $d$-dimensional scaling behavior in the long time. The scaling property in both regimes and the crossover time scale are obtained analytically, which are conf…
It has previously been pointed out that the coexistence of infinite-range and short-range interactions causes a system to have a phase transition of the mean-field universality class, in which the cluster size is finite even at the critical point. In the present paper, we study this property in a model of bistable molecules, whose size changes depending on the bistable states. The molecules can move in space, interacting via an elastic interaction. It is known that due to the different sizes, an effective long-range interaction between the spins appears, and thus this model has a mean-field ty…
We apply simulated tempering and magnetizing (STM) Monte Carlo simulations to the two-dimensional three-state Potts model in an external magnetic field in order to investigate the crossover scaling behaviour in the temperature-field plane at the Potts critical point and towards the Ising universality class for negative magnetic fields. Our data set has been generated by STM simulations of several square lattices with sizes up to 160 x 160 spins, supplemented by conventional canonical simulations of larger lattices at selected simulation points. We present careful scaling and finite-size scalin…
Recent analyses of wetting in the semi-infinite two dimensional Ising model, extended to include both a surface coupling enhancement and a surface field, have shown that the wetting transition may be effectively first-order and that surprisingly the surface susceptibility develops a divergence described by an anomalous exponent with value $γ_{11}^{\rm eff}=\frac{3}{2}$. We reproduce these results using an interfacial Hamiltonian model making connection with previous studies of two dimensional wetting and show that they follow from the simple crossover scaling of the singular contribution to th…
We study the kinetic roughening of the single-step (SS) growth model with a tunable parameter $p$ in $1+1$ and $2+1$ dimensions by performing extensive numerical simulations. We show that there exists a very slow crossover from an intermediate regime dominated by the Edwards-Wilkinson class to an asymptotic regime dominated by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class for any $p <\frac{1}{2}$. We also identify the crossover time, the nonlinear coupling constant, and some nonuniversal parameters in the KPZ equation as a function $p$. The effective nonuniversal parameters are continuously decreasing w…
We study the second-order phase transition in the $d$-dimensional Ising model with long-range interactions decreasing as a power of the distance $1/r^{d+s}$. For $s$ below some known value $s_*$, the transition is described by a conformal field theory without a local stress tensor operator, with critical exponents varying continuously as functions of $s$. At $s=s_*$, the phase transition crosses over to the short-range universality class. While the location $s_*$ of this crossover has been known for 40 years, its physics has not been fully understood, the main difficulty being that the standar…
We perform large scale simulations of a two dimensional lattice model for amorphous plasticity with random local yield stresses and long-range quadrupolar elastic interactions. We show that as the external stress increases towards the yielding phase transition, the scaling behavior of the avalanches crosses over from mean-field theory to a different universality class. This behavior is associated with strain localization, which significantly depends on the short-range properties of the interaction kernel.
The magnetic domain wall motion driven by a magnetic field is studied in (Ga,Mn)As and (Ga,Mn)(As,P) films of different thicknesses. In the thermally activated creep regime, a kink in the velocity curves and a jump of the roughness exponent evidence a dimensional crossover in the domain wall dynamics. The measured values of the roughness exponent zeta_{1d} = 0.62 +/- 0.02 and zeta_{2d} = 0.45 +/- 0.04 are compatible with theoretical predictions for the motion of elastic line (d = 1) and surface (d = 2) in two and three dimensional media, respectively.
We perform a dynamical finite-size scaling analysis of a nonequilibrium Bose gas which is confined in the transverse plane. Varying the transverse size, we establish a dimensional crossover for universal scaling properties far from equilibrium. Our results suggest that some aspects of the dynamical universal behavior of anisotropic systems can be classified in terms of fractional spatial dimensions. We discuss our findings in view of recent experimental results with quasi one-dimensional setups of quenched ultracold quantum gases.
The 2-dimensional Ising model on a square lattice is investigated with a variational autoencoder in the non-vanishing field case for the purpose of extracting the crossover region between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. The encoded latent variable space is found to provide suitable metrics for tracking the order and disorder in the Ising configurations that extends to the extraction of a crossover region in a way that is consistent with expectations. The extracted results achieve an exceptional prediction for the critical point as well as agreement with previously published results …
Quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) systems, i.e., three- and two-dimensional (3D/2D) arrays composed of weakly coupled one-dimensional lattices of interacting quantum particles, exhibit rich and fascinating physics. They are studied across various areas of condensed matter and ultracold atomic lattice-gas physics, and are often marked by dimensional crossover as the coupling between one-dimensional systems is increased or temperature decreased, i.e., the Q1D system goes from appearing largely 1D to largely 3D. Phase transitions occurring along the crossover can strongly enhance this effect. Understan…
We investigate the dimensional crossover from three to two dimensions in an ultracold Fermi gas across the whole BCS-BEC crossover. Of particular interest is the strongly interacting regime as strong correlations are more pronounced in reduced dimensions. Our results are obtained from first principles within the framework of the functional renormalisation group (FRG). Here, the confinement of the transverse direction is imposed by means of periodic boundary conditions. We calculate the equation of state, the gap parameter at zero temperature and the superfluid transition temperature across a w…
We study dimensional crossover in Ising systems at complex temperatures by comparing three types of system: the infinite isotropic 2D Ising model; the infinite anisotropic 2D Ising model; and Ising ladders with a finite number of legs. In particular we present evidence, from both tensor-network calculations and numerical evaluations based on the exact solution of the model, that the infinite anisotropic 2D Ising model exhibits long-range spatially modulated magnetization in certain regions of the complex-temperature plane. We discuss the physics of the special unitary points that exists in the…
The phase behavior of liquids confined in a slit geometry does not reveal a crossover from a three to a two-dimensional behavior as the gap size decreases. Indeed, the prototypical two-dimensional hexatic phase only occurs in liquids confined to a monolayer. Here, we demonstrate that the dimensionality crossover is apparent in the lateral size dependence of the relaxation dynamics of confined liquids, developing a Debye model for the density of vibrational states of confined systems and performing extensive numerical simulations. In confined systems, Mermin-Wagner fluctuations enhance the ampl…
We investigate how confining a transverse spatial dimension influences the few- and many-body properties of non-relativistic bosons with pointlike interactions. Our main focus is on the dimensional crossover from three to two dimensions, which is of relevance for ultracold atom experiments. Using Functional Renormalization Group equations and T-matrix calculations we study how the phase transition temperature changes as a function of the spatial extent of the transverse dimension and relate the 3D and 2D s-wave scattering lengths. The analysis reveals how the properties of the lower-dimensiona…
