We build the canonical ensemble of a hot self-gravitating matter thin shell in anti-de Sitter (AdS) space by finding its partition function through the Euclidean path integral approach with fixed temperature at the conformal boundary. We obtain the reduced action of the system by restricting the path integral to spherically symmetric metrics with given boundary conditions and with the Hamiltonian constraint satisfied. The stationary conditions, i.e., the mechanical equilibrium and the thermodynamic equilibrium, are obtained from minimizing the reduced action. Evaluating the perturbed reduced action at the stationary points yields the mechanical stability condition and the thermodynamic stability condition. The reduced action calculated at the stationary points gives the partition function in the zero-loop approximation and from it the thermodynamic properties of the system are acquired. Within thermodynamics alone, the only stability condition that one can establish is thermodynamic stability, which follows from the computation of the heat capacity. For given specific pressure and temperature equations of state for the shell, we obtain the solutions of the ensemble. There are four different thin shell solutions, one of them is fully stable, i.e., is stable mechanically and thermodynamically. For the equations of state given, we find a first order phase transition from the matter thermodynamic phase to the Hawking-Page black hole phase. Moreover, there is a maximum temperature above which the shell ceases to exist, presumably at these high temperatures the shell inevitably collapses to a black hole.
We investigate quantum dynamics of self-gravitating spherical dust shell. The wave functions of discrete spectrum are not localized inside the Schwarzschild radius. We argue that such shells can transform into white holes (in another space). It is plausible that shells with bare masses larger than the Planck mass loose their mass emitting lighter shells.
We investigate the existence and the stability of spherically symmetric thermal equilibrium states of the self-gravitating many-particle system which satisfies the Einstein-Vlasov equations with a negative cosmological constant. While a thermal equilibrium state of the self-gravitating particle system cannot have a finite mass without an artificial wall in the asymptotically flat case, in the asymptotically AdS case, the total mass can be finite without any artificial wall due to the AdS potential barrier. In this case, the typical size of the system is characterized by the AdS radius. The equ…
We study spherically symmetric equilibrium configurations of self-gravitating massless thermal radiation in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. In d=4, it was shown by Page and Phillips that there is a maximum red-shifted temperature, maximum mass and maximum entropy. For higher central densities, the temperature, mass and entropy undergo an infinite series of damped oscillations, corresponding to unstable configurations. We extend this work to all dimensions $d\geq 3$. We find that in $4\leq d\leq 10$, the behaviour is similar to the d=4 case. In $d\geq 11$, the temperature, mass and entropy…
In the AdS/CFT correspondence, single trace operators of large-$N$ gauge theories at large spin $J$ can be described by classical spinning strings, giving a geometric and classical description of their spectrum at strong coupling. We observe that in AdS$_3$ these strings have significant gravitational back-reaction at sufficiently large spin, since the gravitational force does not decay at long distances. We construct solutions for folded spinning strings coupled to gravity in AdS$_3$ and compute their spectrum, corresponding to the leading Regge trajectory of Virasroro primary operators. Thes…
We study compact gravitating $Q$-ball, $Q$-shell solutions in a sigma model with the target space $\mathbb{C}P^N$. Models with odd integer $N$ and suitable potential can be parameterized by $N$-th complex scalar fields and they support compact solutions. A coupling with gravity allows for harboring of the Schwarzschild black holes for the $Q$-shell solutions. The energy of the solutions behaves as $E\sim |Q|^{5/6}$, where $Q$ stands for the $U(1)$ Noether charge, for both the gravitating and the black hole solutions.Notable difference from the solutions of the flat space is that upper bound of…
A thin shell of light-like dust with its own gravitational field is studied in the special case of spherical symmetry. The action functional for this system due to Louko, Whiting, and Friedman is reduced to Kuchař form: the new variables are embeddings, their conjugate momenta, and Dirac observables. The concepts of background manifold and covariant gauge fixing, that underlie these variables, are reformulated in a way that implies the uniqueness and gauge invariance of the background manifold. The reduced dynamics describes motion on this background manifold.
We present a self-gravitating dyon solution of the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs equations of motion in asymptotically AdS space. The back reaction of gauge and Higgs fields on the space-time geometry leads to the metric of an asymptotically AdS black hole. Using the gauge/gravity correspondence we analyze relevant properties of the finite temperature quantum field theory defined on the boundary. In particular we identify an order operator, characterize a phase transition of the dual theory on the border and also compute the expectation value of the finite temperature Wilson loop.
The dynamics of a thin spherically symmetric shell of zero-rest-mass matter in its own gravitational field is studied. A form of action principle is used that enables the reformulation of the dynamics as motion on a fixed background manifold. A self-adjoint extension of the Hamiltonian is obtained via the group quantization method. Operators of position and of direction of motion are constructed. The shell is shown to avoid the singularity, to bounce and to re-expand to that asymptotic region from which it contracted; the dynamics is, therefore, truly unitary. If a wave packet is sufficiently …
A static self-gravitating electrically charged spherical thin shell embedded in a (3+1)-dimensional spacetime is used to study the thermodynamic and entropic properties of the corresponding spacetime. Inside the shell, the spacetime is flat, outside it is Reissner-Nordström, and this establishes the energy density, the pressure, and the electric charge in the shell. Imposing that the shell is at a given local temperature and that the first law of thermodynamics holds on the shell one can find the integrability conditions for the temperature and for the thermodynamic electric potential, the the…
In this paper we investigate the equilibrium self-gravitating radiation in higher dimensional, plane symmetric anti-de Sitter space. We find that there exist essential differences from the spherically symmetric case: In each dimension ($d\geq 4$), there are maximal mass (density), maximal entropy (density) and maximal temperature configurations, they do not appear at the same central energy density; the oscillation behavior appearing in the spherically symmetric case, does not happen in this case; and the mass (density), as a function of the central energy density, increases first and reaches …
We study $U(1)$ gauged gravitating compact $Q$-ball, $Q$-shell solutions in a nonlinear sigma model with the target space $\mathbb{C}P^N$. The models with odd integer $N$ and a special potential can be parameterized by $N$-th complex scalar fields and they support compact solutions. Implementing the $U(1)$ gauge field in the model, the behavior of the solutions become complicated than the global model. Especially, they exhibit branch, i.e., two independent solutions with same shooting parameter. The energy of the solutions in the first branch behaves as $E\sim Q^{5/6}$ for small $Q$, where $Q$…
We present a self-gravitating, analytic and globally regular Skyrmion solution of the Einstein-Skyrme system with winding number w = 1, in presence of a cosmological constant. The static spacetime metric is the direct product RxS3 and the Skyrmion is the self-gravitating generalization of the static hedgehog solution of Manton and Ruback with unit topological charge. This solution can be promoted to a dynamical one in which the spacetime is a cosmology of the Bianchi type-IX with time-dependent scale and squashing coefficients. Remarkably, the Skyrme equations are still identically satisfied f…
The features of the fundamental thermodynamical relation (expressing entropy as function of state variables) that arise from the self-gravitating character of a system are analyzed. The models studied include not only a spherically symmetric hot matter shell with constant particle number but also a black hole characterized by a general thermal equation of state. These examples illustrate the formal structure of thermodynamics developed by Callen as applied to a gravitational configuration as well as the phenomenological manner in which Einstein equations largely determine the thermodynamical e…
The problem of how space-time responds to gravitating quantum matter in full quantum gravity has been one of the main questions that any program of quantization of gravity should address. Here we analyze this issue by considering the quantization of a collapsing null shell coupled to spherically symmetric loop quantum gravity. We show that the constraint algebra of canonical gravity is Abelian both classically and when quantized using loop quantum gravity techniques. The Hamiltonian constraint is well defined and suitable Dirac observables characterizing the problem were identified at the quan…
We construct the first analytic self-gravitating Skyrmions with higher Baryon charge in four dimensions for the $SU(3)$-Skyrme-Einstein-$Λ$ theory by combining the generalized hedgehog ansatz with the approach developed by Balachandran et al. to describe the first (numerical) example of a non-embedded solution. These are genuine $SU(3)$ analytic solutions instead of trivial embeddings of $SU(2)$ into $SU(3)$ and its geometry is that of a Bianchi IX Universe. The Skyrme ansatz is chosen in such a way that the Skyrme field equations are identically satisfied in the sector with Baryon charge 4. T…
The thermodynamic properties of self-gravitating spherical thin matter shells an black holes in $d>4$ dimensions are studied, extending previous analysis for $d=4$. The shell joins a Minkowski interior to a Tangherlini exterior, i.e., a Schwarzschild exterior in $d$ dimensions, with $d\geqslant4$, The junction conditions alone together with the first law of thermodynamics enable one to establish that the entropy of the thin shell depends only on its own gravitational radius. Endowing the shell with a power-law temperature equation of state allows to establish a precise form for the entropy and…
We study the heat capacity of a static system of self-gravitating radiations analytically in the context of general relativity. To avoid the complexity due to a conical singularity at the center, we excise the central part and replace it with a regular spherically symmetric distribution of matters of which specifications we are not interested in. We assume that the mass inside the inner boundary and the locations of the inner and the outer boundaries are given. Then, we derive a formula relating the variations of physical parameters at the outer boundary with those at the inner boundary. Becau…
Breather-type (time-periodic and spatially localized) solutions with spherical symmetry are investigated in a massless scalar field theory coupled to Einstein's gravity with cosmological constant in $d$ spatial dimensions imposing anti de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics on space-time. Using a code constructed with the Kadath library that enables the use of spectral methods, the phase space of breather solutions is explored in detail for $d=3$ and $d=4$. It is found that there are discrete families of solutions indexed by an integer and by their frequency. Using a time evolution code these AdS breathe…
Late-time dominance of entanglement islands plays a critical role in addressing the information paradox for black holes in AdS coupled to an asymptotic non-gravitational bath. A natural question is how this observation can be extended to gravitational systems. To gain insight into this question, we explore how this story is modified within the context of Karch-Randall braneworlds when we allow the asymptotic bath to couple to dynamical gravity. We find that because of the inability to separate degrees of freedom by spatial location when defining the radiation region, the entanglement entropy o…
To investigate the possibility that intrinsic gravitational decoherence can be theoretically demonstrated within canonical quantum gravity, we develop a model of a self-gravitating interferometer. We search for evidence in the resulting interference pattern that would indicate coherence is fundamentally limited due to general relativistic effects. To eliminate the occurence of gravitational waves, we work in spherical symmetry, and construct the "beam" of the interferometer out of WKB states for an infinitesimally thin shell of matter. For internal consistency, we encode information about the …
It has recently been reported that certain thin timelike shells undergo oscillatory motion in AdS. In this paper, we compute two-point function of a probe field in the geodesic approximation in such an oscillating shell background. We confirm that the two-point function exhibits an oscillatory behaviour following the motion of the shell. We show that similar oscillatory dynamics is possible when the perfect fluid on the shell has a polytropic equation of state. Moreover, we show that certain ball like configurations in AdS also exhibit oscillatory motion and comment on how such a solution can …
We studied spherically symmetric solutions in scalar-torsion gravity theories in which a scalar field is coupled to torsion with a derivative coupling. We obtained the general field equations from which we extracted a decoupled master equation, the solution of which leads to the specification of all other unknown functions. We first obtained an exact solution which represents a new wormhole-like solution dressed with a regular scalar field. Then, we found large distance linearized spherically symmetric solutions in which the space asymptotically is AdS.
In three-dimensional AdS space, we consider the gravitational collapse of dust shell and then investigate the quantum radiation from the collapsing shell by employing the functional Schrödinger formalism. In the formation of the BTZ black hole, the interior geometry of the shell can be chosen as either the massless black hole or the global AdS space. In the incipient black hole limit, we obtain the wave function exactly from the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a massless scalar field. Then, we show that the occupation number of excited states can be written by analytic expressions, and…
We study the Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity coupled to Yang-Mills-Higgs theory in three dimensional Euclidean space with cosmological constant. The classical equations reduce to Bogomol'nyi type first order equations in curved space. There are BPS type gauge theory instanton (monopole) solutions of finite action in a gravitational instanton which itself has a finite action. We also discuss gauge theory instantons in the vacuum (zero action) AdS space. In addition we point out to some exact solutions which are singular.
A rotating thin shell in a (2+1)-dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetime is studied. The spacetime exterior to the shell is the rotating BTZ spacetime and the interior is the empty spacetime with a cosmological constant. Through the Einstein equation in (2+1)-dimensions and the corresponding junction conditions we calculate the dynamical relevant quantities, namely, the rest energy-density, the pressure, and the angular momentum flux density. We also analyze the matter in a frame where its energy-momentum tensor has a perfect fluid form. In addition, we show that Machian effects, such as the …
We consider the Nielsen-Olesen vortex non-minimally coupled to Einstein gravity with cosmological constant $Λ$. A non-minimal coupling term $ξ\,R\,|ϕ|^2$ is natural to add to the vortex as it preserves gauge-invariance (here $R$ is the Ricci scalar and $ξ$ a dimensionless coupling constant). This term plays a dual role: it contributes to the potential of the scalar field and to the Einstein-Hilbert term for gravity. As a consequence, the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the scalar field and the cosmological constant in the AdS$_3$ background depend on $ξ$. This leads to a novel feature: there…
We provide examples of gravitational collapse and black hole formation in AdS, either from collapsing matter shells or in analogy to the Oppenheimer-Sneider solution. We then investigate boundary properties of the corresponding states. In particular, we describe the boundary two-point function corresponding to a shell outside its horizon; if the shell is quasistatically lowered into the horizon, the resulting state is the Boulware state. We also describe the more physical Hartle-Hawking state, and discuss its connection to the quasistatic shell states and to thermalization on the boundary.
We study gravitational perturbations sourced by a rotating test shell collapsing into five-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes in anti-de Sitter (AdS). Our attention is restricted to the case in which the two possible angular momenta of the geometry are set equal. In this situation the background is cohomogeneity-1, which amounts to a crucial technical simplification. It is found that the linearized Einstein equations are consistent only when the test shell is corotating with the spacetime. However, it is argued that this is a consequence of the matter on the shell being described by dust or, …
Recently, entropy of static supersymmetric black holes in $AdS_6$ was microscopically counted by the topologically twisted index of five-dimensional superconformal field theories. However, the AdS/CFT dictionary states that the partition function of the boundary field theory corresponds to the on-shell action of the bulk quantum gravity. In this paper, we aim to explain the microscopic counting of black hole entropy by the topologically twisted index. We calculate the renormalized on-shell action and show that the on-shell action equals the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the supersymmetric blac…
We study the simplest two-body problem in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime: two, infinitely thin, concentric spherical shells of matter. We include only gravitational interaction between the two shells, but we show that the dynamics of this system is highly nontrivial. We observe prompt collapse to a black hole, delayed collapse and even perpetual oscillatory motion, depending on the initial location of the shells (or their energy content). The system exhibits critical behavior, and we show strong hints that it is also chaotic.
We consider the dynamics of one or more self gravitating shells of matter in a centrally symmetric gravitational field in the Painleve' family of gauges. We give the reduced hamiltonian for two intersecting shells, both massless and massive. Such a formulation is applied to the computation of the semiclassical action of two intersecting shells. The relation of the imaginary part of the space-part of the action to the computation of the Bogoliubov coefficients is revisited.
By direct calculation in classical theory we derive the central extension of the off-shell symmetry algebra for the string propagating in AdS_4 x CP^3. It turns out to be the same as in the case of the AdS_5 x S^5 string. We also elaborate on the kappa-symmetry gauge and explain, how it can be chosen in a way which does not break bosonic symmetries.
We study the motion of thin-shell bubbles and their tunneling in anti de Sitter (AdS) background. We are interested in the case when the outside of a shell is a Schwarzschild-AdS space (false vacuum) and the inside of it is an AdS space with a lower vacuum energy (true vacuum). If a collapsing true vacuum bubble is created, classically it will form a Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. However, this collapsing bubble can tunnel to a bouncing bubble that moves out to spatial infinity. Then, although the classical causal structure of a collapsing true vacuum bubble has the singularity and the event ho…
We study the thermodynamics and the phase structures of Reissner-Nordstrom and Born-Infeld black holes in AdS space by constructing ``off-shell'' free energies using thermodynamic quantities derived directly from the action. We then use these results to propose ``off-shell'' effective potentials for the respective boundary gauge theories. The saddle points of the potentials describe all the equilibrium phases of the gauge theories.
We study the collapse of a self-gravitating and radiating shell. Matter constituting the shell is quantized and the construction is viewed as a semiclassical model of possible black hole formation. It is shown that the shell internal degrees of freedom are excited by the quantum non-adiabaticity of the collapse and, consequently, on coupling them to a massless scalar field, the collapsing matter emits a burst of coherent (thermal) radiation.
AdS/CFT predicts that the value of the on-shell action for type IIB Supergravity (SUGRA) on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background must be a non-zero number completely determined from the boundary theory. We examine this statement within Sen's formalism for type IIB SUGRA and find that consistency with AdS/CFT requires us to add a specific boundary term to the action. We contrast our resolution with two other resolutions recently proposed in the literature in the context of different approaches to type IIB SUGRA. We explain how our resolution presents a strong benchmark for the possible boundary term o…
We study the collapse of a self-gravitating thick shell of bosons coupled to a scalar radiation field. Due to the non-adiabaticity of the collapse, the shell (quantum) internal degrees of freedom absorb energy from the (classical) gravitational field and are excited. The excitation energy is then emitted in the form of bursts of (thermal) radiation and the corresponding backreaction on the trajectory is estimated.
A detailed analysis of the structure and gauge dependence of the bulk-to-bulk propagators for the higher spin gauge fields in $AdS$ space is performed. The possible freedom in the construction of the propagators is investigated and fixed by the correct boundary behaviour and correspondence to the representation theory results for the $AdS$ space isometry group. The classical origin of the Goldstone mode and its connection with the gauge fixing procedure is considered.
A thermodynamical description for the quasi-static collapse of radiating, self-gravitating spherical shells of matter in anti-de Sitter space-time is obtained. It is shown that the specific heat at constant area and other thermodynamical quantities may diverge before a black hole has eventually formed. This suggests the possibility of a phase transition occurring along the collapse process. The differences with respect to the asymptotically flat case are also highlighted.
We investigate the collapse of a spherical shell of matter in an anti-de Sitter space. We search for a holographic description of the collapsing shell in the boundary theory. It turns out that in the boundary theory it is possible to find information about the radial size of the shell. The shell deforms the background spacetime, and the deformed background metric enters into the action of a generic bulk field. As a consequence, the correlators of operators coupling to the bulk field are modified. By studying the analytic structure of the correlators, we find that in the boundary theory there a…
The model of a domain wall ("thick" brane) in noncompact five-dimensional space-time is considered with geometries of $AdS_5$ type generated by self-interacting scalar matter. The scalar matter is composed of two fields with O(2) symmetric self interaction. One of them is mixed with gravity scalar modes and plays role of the brane formation mode (due to a kink background) and another one is of a Higgs-field type. The interplay between soft breaking of O(2) symmetry and gravity influence is thoroughly investigated around the critical point of spontaneous $τ$ symmetry breaking when the v.e.v. of…
We study scalar condensations around asymptotically Anti-de Sitter(AdS) regular reflecting shells. We show that the charged scalar field can condense around charged reflecting shells with both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, the radii of the asymptotically AdS hairy shells are discrete, which is similar to cases in asymptotically flat spacetimes. We also provide upper bounds for the radii of the hairy Dirichlet reflecting shells and above the bound, the scalar field cannot condense around the shell.
As a step towards formulating projective superspace techniques for supergravity theories with eight supercharges, this work is devoted to field theory in five-dimensional N = 1 anti-de Sitter superspace AdS^{5|8} = SU(2,2|1)/SO(4,1) x U(1) which is a maximally symmetric curved background. We develop the differential geometry of AdS^{5|8} and describe its isometries in terms of Killing supervectors. Various off-shell supermultiplets in AdS^{5|8} x S^2 are defined, and supersymmetric actions are constructed both in harmonic and projective superspace approaches. Several families of supersymmetric…
The equilibration of matter and onset of hydrodynamics can be understood in the AdS/CFT context as a gravitational collapse process, in which "collision debris" create a horizon. In this paper we consider the simplest geometry possible, a flat shell (or membrane) falling in the holographic direction toward the horizon. The metric is a combination of two well known solutions: thermal AdS above the shell and pure AdS below, while motion of the shell is given by the Israel junction condition. Furthermore, when the shell motion can be considered slow, we were able to solve for two-point functions …
We consider the collision of self-gravitating n-branes in a (n+2)-dimensional spacetime. We show that there is a geometrical constraint which can be expressed as a simple sum rule for angles characterizing Lorentz boosts between branes and the intervening spacetime regions. This constraint can then be re-interpreted as either energy or momentum conservation at the collision.
We analyze the psu(2,2|4) supersymmetry algebra of a superstring propagating in the AdS_5 x S^5 background in the uniform light-cone gauge. We consider the off-shell theory by relaxing the level-matching condition and take the limit of infinite light-cone momentum, which decompactifies the string world-sheet. We focus on the psu(2|2)+psu(2|2) subalgebra which leaves the light-cone Hamiltonian invariant and show that it undergoes extension by a central element which is expressed in terms of the level-matching operator. This result is in agreement with the conjectured symmetry algebra of the dyn…
In this paper, we study the collapse of a massive shell in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensional gravity with Anti-de Sitter asymptotics. Using the Gauss-Codazzi method, we derive gravitational equations of motion of the shell. We then use the functional Schrodinger formalism to calculate the spectrum of particles produced during the collapse. At the late time, radiation agrees very well with the standard Hawking results. In 3+1 dimensions, we reproduce the Hawking-Page transition. We then construct the density matrix of this collapsing system and analyze the information content in the emitted radiation. We…
We compute the on-shell action of static, BPS black holes in AdS$_4$ from ${\cal N}=2$ gauged supergravity coupled to vector multiplets and show that it is equal to minus the entropy of the black hole. Holographic renormalization is used to demonstrate that with appropriate boundary conditions on the scalar fields, the divergent and finite contributions from the asymptotic boundary vanish. The entropy arises from the extrinsic curvature on $Σ_g\times S^1$ evaluated at the horizon, where $Σ_g$ may have any genus $g\geq 0$. This provides a clarification of the equivalence between the partition f…
In this paper, we study the quantum corrected thermodynamics of a class of black holes generated by self-gravitating Skyrmion models. One such black hole solution is Einstein-Skrymion black hole. We first compute the ADM mass of Einstein-Skyrmion black hole using on-shell Hamiltonian formalism present already in the literature. We then consider non-extended phase space thermodynamics and derive expressions for various thermodynamic quantities like the Hawking temperature, entropy, pressure, Gibbs free energy, and heat capacity. Next, we study the effect of quantum corrections on the thermodyna…
We construct an unfolded system for off-shell fields of arbitrary integer spin in 4d anti-de Sitter space. To this end we couple an on-shell system, encoding Fronsdal equations, to external Fronsdal currents for which we find an unfolded formulation. We present a reduction of the Fronsdal current system which brings it to the unfolded Fierz-Pauli system describing massive fields of arbitrary integer spin. Reformulating off-shell higher-spin system as the set of Schwinger-Dyson equations we compute propagators of higher-spin fields in the de Donder gauge directly from the unfolded equations. We…

We study the semiclassical evolution of a self-gravitating thick shell in Anti-de Sitter space-time. We treat the matter on the shell as made of quantized bosons and evaluate the back-reaction of the loss of gravitational energy which is radiated away as a non-adiabatic effect. A peculiar feature of anti-de Sitter is that such an emission also occurs for large shell radius, contrary to the asymptotically flat case.
