We study electromagnetic and gravitational properties of AdS black shells (also referred to as AdS black bubbles) -- a class of quantum gravity motivated black hole mimickers, that in the classical limit are described as ultra compact shells of matter. We find that their electromagnetic properties are remarkably similar to black holes. We then discuss the extent to which these objects are distinguishable from black holes, both for intrinsic interest within the black shell model, and as a guide for similar efforts in other sub-classes of exotic compact objects (ECOs). We study photon rings and lensing band characteristics, relevant for very large baseline inteferometry (VLBI) observations, as well as gravitational wave observables -- quasinormal modes in the eikonal limit and the static tidal Love number for non-spinning shells -- relevant for ongoing and upcoming gravitational wave observations.
We undertake the task of studying the non-linear dynamics of quantum gravity motivated alternatives to black holes that in the classical limit appear as ultra-compact shells of matter. We develop a formalism that should be amenable to numerical solution in generic situations. For a concrete model we focus on the spherically symmetric AdS black bubble -- a shell of matter at the Buchdahl radius separating a Schwarzschild exterior from an AdS interior. We construct a numerical code to study the radial dynamics of and accretion onto AdS black bubbles, with exterior matter provided by scalar field…
We consider nonminimally coupled scalar fields to explore the Siklos spacetimes in three dimensions. Their interpretation as exact gravitational waves propagating on AdS restrict the source to behave as a pure radiation field. We show that the related pure radiation constraints single out a unique self-interaction potential depending on one coupling constant. For a vanishing coupling constant, this potential reduces to a mass term with a mass fixed in terms of the nonminimal coupling parameter. This mass dependence allows the existence of several free cases including massless and tachyonic sou…
In this paper, we present a candidate for $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ extended higher - spin $AdS_3$ supergravity with the most general boundary conditions discussed by Grumiller and Riegler recently. We show that the asymptotic symmetry algebra consists of two copies of the $\mathfrak{osp}(3|2)_k$ affine algebra in the presence of the most general boundary conditions.Furthermore, we impose some certain restrictions on gauge fields on the most general boundary conditions and that leads us to the supersymmetric extension of the Brown - Henneaux boundary conditions. We eventually see that the asymptotic…
In this paper we study the recently proposed tensor networks/AdS correspondence. We found that the Coxeter group is a useful tool to describe tensor networks in a negatively curved space. Studying generic tensor network populated by perfect tensors, we find that the physical wave function generically do not admit any connected correlation functions of local operators. To remedy the problem, we assume that wavefunctions admitting such semi-classical gravitational interpretation are composed of tensors close to, but not exactly perfect tensors. Computing corrections to the connected two point co…
We investigate the thermodynamics of phase transition for $ (n+1) $ dimensional Reissner Nordstrom (RN)-AdS black holes using a grand canonical ensemble. This phase transition is characterized by a discontinuity in specific heat. The phase transition occurs from a lower mass black hole with negative specific heat to a higher mass black hole with positive specific heat. By exploring Ehrenfest's scheme we show that this is a second order phase transition. Explicit expressions for the critical temperature and critical mass are derived. In appropriate limits the results for $ (n+1) $ dimensional S…
We explore the holographic principle in the context of asymptotically flat spacetimes. In analogy with the AdS/CFT scenario we analyse the asympotically symmetry group of this class of spacetimes, the so called Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group. We apply the covariant entropy bound to relate bulk entropy to boundary symmetries and find a quite different picture with respect to the asymptotically AdS case. We then derive the covariant wave equations for fields carrying BMS representations to investigate the nature of the boundary degrees of freedom. We find some similarities with 't Hooft S-matri…
We provide a ``user-friendly'' algorithm to systematically and rapidly obtain exact planar black hole solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell theory deformed by the most general shift- and reflection-symmetric Horndeski sector where the usual Galileon is replaced by a tuple of scalars with profiles linear in the coordinates of the transverse manifold. Under precise assumptions, these axion backgrounds break the translational invariance of the system, causing momentum dissipation in the holographically dual field theory. The success of the method relies on the simple realization that the bulk equatio…

According to the gauge/gravity duality, the Van der Waals transition of charged AdS black holes in extended phase space is conjectured to be dual to a renormalization group flow on the space of field theories. So exploring the Van der Waals transition is potentially valuable for studying holographic properties of charged black hole thermodynamics. There are different transition behaviors for charged dilatonic AdS black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) theory with string-inspired potential with different dilaton coupling constants in diverse dimensions. In this work, we find a special cl…
We consider the stability of black holes within both classical general relativity and the semiclassical thermodynamic description. In particular, we study linearised perturbations and their contribution to the gravitational partition function, addressing technical issues for charged (Reissner-Nordstrom) and rotating (Kerr-AdS) black holes. Exploring the connection between classical and thermodynamic stability, we find classical instabilities of Myers-Perry black holes and bifurcations to new black hole families.
The phase structure and critical phenomena of the 3+1 dimensional charged black holes in asymptotically flat spacetime are investigated in terms of thermodynamic properties within the Rényi statistics. With this approach as the non-extensive parameter above zero, we find that the charged black hole can be in thermodynamic equilibrium with surrounding thermal radiation, and have a Hawking-Page phase transition in the same way in the case of AdS charged black hole. This gives more evidence supporting the proposal that there exists an equivalence between the black hole thermodynamics in asymptoti…
We study the linear instability of the charged massless scalar perturbation in regularized 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes by exploring the quasinormal modes. We find that the linear instability is triggered by superradiance. The charged massless scalar perturbation becomes more unstable when increasing the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant or the black hole charge. Meanwhile, decreasing} the AdS radius will make the charged massless scalar perturbation} more stable. The stable region in parameter space $(α,Q,Λ)$ is given. Moreover, we find that the charged massless scalar pertur…

We continue the programme of exploring the means of holographically decoding the geometry of spacetime inside a black hole using the gauge/gravity correspondence. To this end, we study the behaviour of certain extremal surfaces (focusing on those relevant for equal-time correlators and entanglement entropy in the dual CFT) in a dynamically evolving asymptotically AdS spacetime, specifically examining how deep such probes reach. To highlight the novel effects of putting the system far out of equilibrium and at finite volume, we consider spherically symmetric Vaidya-AdS, describing black hole fo…
We consider quantum effects of gravitational and electromagnetic fields in spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes in the asymptotic safety scenario. Introducing both the running gravitational and electromagnetic couplings from the renormalization group equations and applying a physically sensible scale identification scheme based on the Kretschmann scalar, we construct a quantum mechanically corrected, or quantum improved Reissner-Nordstrom metric. We study the global structure of the quantum improved geometry and show, in particular, that the central singularity is resolved, being genera…
BTZ black holes are excellent laboratories for studying black hole thermodynamics which is a bridge between classical general relativity and quantum nature of gravitation. In addition, three-dimensional gravity could have equipped us for exploring some of the ideas behind the two dimensional conformal field theory based on the $AdS_{3}/CFT_{2}$. Considering the significant interests in these regards, we examine charged BTZ black holes. We consider the system contains massive gravity with energy dependent spacetime to enrich the results. In order to make high curvature (energy) BTZ black holes …
We study a quintessential black hole solution in three dimensions, with mass and quintessence charge. By exploring the Carter-Penrose diagram, we show the presence of spacelike and lightlike singularities in the metric, given different values for the quintessence parameter, as well as an AdS-like spatial infinity and event horizon encapsulating the singularity. We also study the propagation of scalar and Dirac (Weyl) fields around the black hole solutions with different quintessence charges obtaining the quasinormal spectra for both fields using two different numerical methods with good agreem…
