We present a self-gravitating dyon solution of the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs equations of motion in asymptotically AdS space. The back reaction of gauge and Higgs fields on the space-time geometry leads to the metric of an asymptotically AdS black hole. Using the gauge/gravity correspondence we analyze relevant properties of the finite temperature quantum field theory defined on the boundary. In particular we identify an order operator, characterize a phase transition of the dual theory on the border and also compute the expectation value of the finite temperature Wilson loop.
We study static spherically symmetric gravitating dyon solutions and dyonic black holes in Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. The gravitating dyon solutions share many features with the gravitating monopole solutions. In particular, gravitating dyon solutions and dyonic black holes exist up to a maximal coupling constant, and beside the fundamental dyon solutions there are excited dyon solutions.
We describe curved-space BPS dyon solutions, the ADM mass of which saturates the gravitational version of the Bogomol'nyi bound. This generalizes self-gravitating BPS monopole solutions of Gibbons et al. when there is no dilaton.
We show that the exact static, i.e. `anti-gravitating', magnetic multi monopole solutions of the Einstein/Maxwell/dilaton-YM/Higgs equations found by Kastor, London, Traschen, and the authors, for arbitrary non-zero dilaton coupling constant $a$, are equivalent to the string theory BPS magnetic monopole solutions of Harvey and Liu when $a=\sqrt{3}$. For this value of $a$, the monopole solutions also solve the equations of five-dimensional supergravity/YM theory. We also discuss some features of the dyon solutions obtained by boosting in the fifth dimension and some features of the moduli space…
Gravitating t'Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopoles can be constructed when coupling the Georgi-Glashow model to gravitation. For a given value of the Higgs boson mass, these gravitating solitons exist up to a critical value of the ratio of the vector meson mass to the Planck mass. The critical solution is characterized by a degenerate horizon of the metric. As pointed out recently by Lue and Weinberg, two types of critical solutions can occur, depending on the value of the Higgs boson mass. Here we investigate this transition for dyons and show that the Lue and Weinberg phenomenon is favorized by…
The holographic dual of self gravitating Julia-Zee dyon is discussed. It is shown that the dual field theory is generally a field theory with a vortex condensate. The vacuum expectation values of the dual operators, as functions of the sources in the field theory, are studied in a class of bulk solutions. In these solutions the sign of the vacuum expectation values of the dual operators change, by changing the sources in the model.
We construct back-reacted asymptotically AdS_4 backgrounds with both electric and magnetic charge, at finite temperature and chemical potential. The system consists of a condensed bulk Dirac field hovering over a charged black brane. We give a detailed microscopic treatment of the bulk fermions, from which we derive the usual fluid approximations describing the condensate. In the context of holography, such a gravitational solution is dual to a (2+1)-dimensional CFT with a U(1) current, at finite density and strong coupling, subjected to a transverse magnetic field.
We study thermodynamic properties of dyonic black hole and its dual field theory. We observe that the phase diagram of a dyonic black hole in constant electric potential and magnetic charge ensemble is similar to that of a Van der Waals fluid with chemical potential. Phase transitions and other critical phenomena have been studied in presence of magnetic charge and chemical potential. We also analyse magnetic properties of dual conformal field theory and observe a ferromagnetic like behavior of boundary theory when the external magnetic field vanishes. Finally, we compute susceptibility of dif…
We find static spherically symmetric dyons in Einstein-Born-Infeld-Higgs model in 3+1 dimensions. The solutions share many features with the gravitating monopoles in the same model. In particular, they exist only up to some critical value of a parameter $\a$ related to the strength of the gravitational interaction. We also study dyonic non-Abelian black holes. We analyse these solutions numerically.
We consider vortex-type solutions in $d=5$ dimensions of the Einstein gravity coupled to a nonabelian SU(2) field posessing a nonzero electric part. After the dimensional reduction, this corresponds to a $d=4$ Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs-U(1)-dilaton model. A general axially symmetric ansatz is presented, and the properties of the spherically symmetric solutions are analysed.
We study black branes carrying both electric and magnetic charges in Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a dilaton-axion in asymptotically anti de Sitter space. After reviewing and extending earlier results for the case of electrically charged branes, we characterise the thermodynamics of magnetically charged branes. We then focus on dyonic branes in theories which enjoy an $SL(2,R)$ electric-magnetic duality. Using $SL(2,R)$, we are able to generate solutions with arbitrary charges starting with the electrically charged solution, and also calculate transport coefficients. These solutions all e…
Recent work has shown the existence of a unique nonlinear extension of electromagnetism which preserves conformal symmetry and allows for the freedom of duality rotations. Moreover, black holes and gravitational waves have been found to exist in this nonlinearly extended electrovacuum. We generalise these dyonic black holes in two major ways: with the relaxation of their horizon topology and with the inclusion of magnetic mass. Motivated by recent attention to traversable wormholes, we use this new family of Taub-NUT spaces to construct AdS wormholes. We explore some thermodynamic features by …
The gravitating Julia-Zee dyon is a particle-like solution with both electric and magnetic charge. It is found in the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system of SU(2) with a scalar field in the adjoint representation coupled to gravity. Within the magnetic ansatz this system is reduced from describing dyons to describing the gravitating 't Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopole. The stability of the well-known static gravitating magnetic monopole solutions with respect to perturbations within the magnetic ansatz--so-called magnetic perturbations--is well studied, but their stability with respect to perturb…
The temperature dependence of quantum Hall conductivities is studied in the context of the AdS/CMT paradigm using a model with a bulk theory consisting of (3+1)-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell action coupled to a dilaton and an axion, with a negative cosmological constant. We consider a solution which has a Lifshitz like geometry with a dyonic black-brane in the bulk. There is an $Sl(2,R)$ action in the bulk corresponding to electromagnetic duality, which maps between classical solutions, and is broken to $Sl(2,Z)$ by Dirac quantisation of dyons. This bulk $Sl(2,Z)$ action translates to an action…
We investigate quantum phase transitions in a 2+1 dimensional gauge theory at finite chemical potential $χ$ and magnetic field $B$. The gravity dual is based on 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ Fayet-Iliopoulos gauged supergravity and the solutions we consider---that are constructed analytically---are extremal, dyonic, asymptotically $AdS_4$ black-branes with a nontrivial radial profile for the scalar field. We discover a line of second order fixed points at $B=B_c(χ)$ between the dyonic black brane and an extremal "thermal gas" solution with a singularity of good-type, according to the acceptability criter…
In these lectures I review some recent progresses in counting the number of microstates of AdS supersymmetric black holes in dimensions equal or greater than four using holography. The counting is obtained by applying localization and matrix model techniques to the dual field theory. I cover in details the case of dyonic AdS$_4$ black holes, corresponding to a twisted compactification of the dual field theory, and I discuss the state of the art for rotating AdS$_5$ black holes.
We discuss some aspects related to holography of Anti-de Sitter (AdS) dyonic hairy black holes, which break the conformal symetry of the boundary. We use counterterms for the scalar field that satisfies mixed boundary conditions to compute the Euclidean action and dual stress tensor. We apply these results to show that the Cardy-Verlinde formula is not satisfied. However, when the magnetic (or electric) charge vanishes, the conformal symmetry is preserved and the entropy of the black hole can be put in the Cardy-Verlinde form. In our analysis, there is no need of adding extra finite counterter…
Recent progress in the study of solitons and black holes in non-Abelian field theories coupled to gravity is reviewed. New topics include gravitational binding of monopoles, black holes with non-trivial topology, Lue-Weinberg bifurcation, asymptotically AdS lumps, solutions to the Freedman-Schwarz model with applications to holography, non-Abelian Born-Infeld solutions
We consider operators in ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory dual to closed string states propagating on a class of LLM geometries. The LLM geometries we consider are specified by a boundary condition that is a set of black rings on the LLM plane. When projected to the LLM plane, the closed strings are polygons with all corners lying on the outer edge of a single ring. The large $N$ limit of correlators of these operators receives contributions from non-planar diagrams even for the leading large $N$ dynamics. Our interest in these fluctuations is because a previous weak coupling analysis argu…
We discuss some aspects of critical electric and magnetic fields in a field theory with holographic dual description. We extend the analysis of arxiv:1109.2920, which finds a critical electric field at which the Schwinger pair production barrier drops to zero, to the case of magnetic fields. We first find that, unlike ordinary weakly coupled theories, the magnetic field is not subject to any perturbative instability originating from the presence of a tachyonic ground state in the W-boson spectrum. This follows from the large value of the 't Hooft coupling λ, which prevents the Zeeman interacti…
We investigate bulk and holographic features of finite-temperature black brane solutions of 4D anti-de Sitter Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-gravity (EMDG). We construct, numerically, black branes endowed with non trivial scalar hairs for broad classes of EMDG. We consider both exponential and power-law forms for the coupling functions, as well as several charge configurations: purely electric, purely magnetic and dyonic solutions. At finite temperature the field theory holographically dual to these black brane solutions has a rich and interesting phenomenology reminiscent of electron motion in meta…
We initiate a holographic model building approach to `strange metallic' phenomenology. Our model couples a neutral Lifshitz-invariant quantum critical theory, dual to a bulk gravitational background, to a finite density of gapped probe charge carriers, dually described by D-branes. In the physical regime of temperature much lower than the charge density and gap, we exhibit anomalous scalings of the temperature and frequency dependent conductivity. Choosing the dynamical critical exponent $z$ appropriately we can match the non-Fermi liquid scalings, such as linear resistivity, observed in stran…
We do a systematic study of the phases of gravity coupled to an electromagnetic field and charged scalar in flat space, with box boundary conditions. The scalar-less box has previously been investigated by Braden, Brown, Whiting and York (and others) before AdS/CFT and we elaborate and extend their results in a language more familiar from holography. The phase diagram of the system is analogous to that of AdS black holes, but we emphasize the differences and explain their origin. Once the scalar is added, we show that the system admits both boson stars as well as hairy black holes as solutions…
We study the Fermi level structure of 2+1-dimensional strongly interacting electron systems in external magnetic field using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravity dual of a finite density fermion system is a Dirac field in the background of the dyonic AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. In the probe limit the magnetic system can be reduced to the non-magnetic one, with Landau-quantized momenta and rescaled thermodynamical variables. We find that at strong enough magnetic fields, the Fermi surface vanishes and the quasiparticle is lost either through a crossover to conformal regime or through …
