The existence of a quantum critical point (QCP) and fluctuations around it are believed to be important for understanding the phase diagram in unconventional superconductors such as cuprates, iron pnictides, and heavy fermion superconductors. However, the QCP is usually buried deep within the superconducting dome and is difficult to investigate. The connection between quantum critical fluctuations and superconductivity remains an outstanding problem in condensed matter. Here combining both electrical transport and Nernst experiments, we explicitly demonstrate the onset of superconductivity at an unconventional QCP in gate-tuned monolayer tungsten ditelluride (WTe2), with features incompatible with the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) scenario. The results lead to a novel superconducting phase diagram that is distinguished from other known superconductors. Two distinct gate-tuned quantum phase transitions are observed at the ends of the superconducting dome. We find that quantum fluctuations around the QCP of the underdoped regime are essential for understanding how the monolayer superconductivity is established. The unconventional phase diagram we report here illustrates a previously unknown relation between superconductivity and QCP.
We present the theoretical approach to study the unconventional Josephson junction (uJJ) made by putting the non-superconduncting strip on the top of superconducting strip. We work in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau, Bogoliubov de Gennes and Usadel formalisms. We solve the non-linear parital differential equations numerically for few simple cases. We obtaine the eigenenergies of the uJJ by means of combined GL and BdGe method. cases. We predict the occurence of the physical effect, which we call the topological Meissner effect. Basing on the obtained results and current knowledge on Josep…
Graphene hybrid planar structures consisting of two regions with different quantum Hall (QH) states exhibit unusual transport properties1-5, originating from chiral edge states equilibration at the interface of the two different regions6. Here we present a sub-nanometre-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) study of a monolayer-bilayer graphene planar junction in the QH regime. The atomically well-defined interface of such a junction allows us to spatially resolve the interface electronic properties. Around the interface, we detect Landau quantization of massless…
We study a 2D system of trion-polaritons at the quantum level and demonstrate that for monolayer semiconductors they can exhibit a strongly nonlinear optical response. The effect is due to the composite nature of trion-based excitations resulting in their nontrivial quantum statistical properties, and enhanced phase space filling effects. We present the full quantum theory to describe the statistics of trion-polaritons, and demonstrate that the associated nonlinearity persists at the level of few quanta, where two qualitatively different regimes of photon antibunching are present for weak and …
We develop a quasi-classical theory for the superconducting proximity effect in a ballistic ferromagnetic layer in contact with a d-wave superconductor. In agreement with recent experiments we find that the density of states oscillate around the normal state value with varying the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer. We show that the phase, the amplitude, and the period of these oscillations depend on the orientation of the superconductor. This effect reveals spatial oscillations and anisotropy of the induced superconducting correlations in the ferromagnet.
The monolayer FeSe with a thickness of one unit cell grown on a single-crystal SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate (FeSe/STO) exhibits striking high-temperature superconductivity with transition temperature $T_{c}$ over 65K reported by recent experimental measurements. In this work, through analyzing the distinctive electronic structure, and providing systematic classification of the pairing symmetry , we find that both $s$-and $p$-wave pairing with odd parity give rise to topological superconducting states in monolayer FeSe, and the exotic properties of $s$-wave topological superconducting states have clos…
We report observation of the nonlinear Meissner effect (NLME) in Nb films by measuring the resonance frequency of a planar superconducting cavity as a function of the magnitude and the orientation of a parallel magnetic field. Use of low power rf probing in films thinner than the London penetration depth, significantly increases the field for the vortex penetration onset and enables NLME detection under true equilibrium conditions. The data agree very well with calculations based on the Usadel equations. We propose to use NLME angular spectroscopy to probe unconventional pairing symmetries in …
We demonstrate superconducting vertical interconnect access (VIA) contacts to a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$), a layered semiconductor with highly relevant electronic and optical properties. As a contact material we use MoRe, a superconductor with a high critical magnetic field and high critical temperature. The electron transport is mostly dominated by a single superconductor/normal conductor junction with a clear superconductor gap. In addition, we find MoS$_2$ regions that are strongly coupled to the superconductor, resulting in resonant Andreev tunneling and junction dependen…
Josephson effect in junctions between unconventional superconductors is studied theoretically within the model describing the effects of interface roughness. The particularly important issue of applicability of the frequently used Sigrist-Rice formula for Josephson current in d-wave superconductor / insulator / d-wave superconductor junctions is addressed. We show that although the SR formula is not applicable in the ballistic case, it works well for rough interfaces when the diffusive normal metal regions exist between the d-wave superconductor and the insulator. It is shown that the SR appro…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on Cux(PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6 (CPSBS; x = 1.47), a superconductor derived from a topological insulator heterostructure, to elucidate the electronic states relevant to the occurrence of possible unconventional superconductivity. Upon Cu intercalation into the parent compound (PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6, we observed a distinct energy shift of the bulk conduction band due to electron doping. Photon-energy dependent ARPES measurements of CPSBS revealed that the observed bulk band forms a cylindrical electronlike Fermi surface at the Brillouin-zone …
The iron-based superconductors are an ideal platform to reveal the enigma of the unconventional superconductivity and potential topological superconductivity. Among them, the monolayer Fe(Se,Te)/SrTiO3(001), which is proposed to be topological nontrivial, shows interface-enhanced high-temperature superconductivity in the two dimensional limit. However, the experimental studies on the superconducting pairing mechanism of monolayer Fe(Se,Te) films are still limited. Here, by measuring quasiparticle interference in monolayer Fe(Se,Te)/SrTiO3(001), we report the observation of the anisotropic stru…
Many recent studies show that superconductivity not only exists in atomically thin monolayers but can exhibit enhanced properties such as higher transition temperature and stronger critical field. Nevertheless, besides being air unstable, weak tunability in these intrinsically metallic monolayers has posed a severe limitation in exploring monolayer superconductivity, hence hindering possible applications in electronic devices. Using field effect gating, we prepared monolayer superconductivity in easily accessible CVD-grown WS2, a typical ambient stable semiconducting transition metal dichalcog…

Magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) recently emerged as a highly tunable platform for studying correlated phases of matter, such as correlated insulators and superconductivity. Superconductivity occurs in a range of doping levels that is bounded by van Hove singularities which stimulates the debate of the origin and nature of superconductivity in this material. In this work, we discuss the role of spin-fluctuations arising from atomic-scale correlations in MATTG for the superconducting state. We show that in a phase diagram as function of doping ($ν$) and temperature, nematic superco…
In contrast to conventional s-wave superconductivity, unconventional (e.g. p or d-wave) superconductivity is strongly suppressed even by relatively weak disorder. Upon approaching the superconductor-metal transition, the order parameter amplitude becomes increasingly inhomogeneous leading to effective granularity and a phase ordering transition described by the Mattis model of spin glasses. One consequence of this is that at low enough temperatures, between the clean unconventional superconducting and the diffusive metallic phases, there is necessarily an intermediate superconducting phase whi…
Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures continue to attract intense interest as a route of designing materials with novel properties that cannot be found in naturally occurring materials. Unfortunately, this approach is currently limited to only a few layers that can be stacked on top of each other. Here we report a bulk material consisting of superconducting monolayers interlayered with monolayers displaying charge density waves (CDW). This bulk vdW heterostructure is created by phase transition of 1T-TaS2 to 6R at 800 °C in an inert atmosphere. Electron microscopy analysis directly shows the pr…
Novel two-dimensional (2D) emergent fermions and negative Poisson's ratio in 2D materials are fascinating subjects of research. Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we predict that the hexacoordinated Mg$_{2}$C monolayer hosts both exotic properties. We analyze its phonon spectrum, reveal the Raman active modes, and show that it has small in-plane stiffness constants. Particularly, under the tensile strain in the zigzag direction, the Mg$_{2}$C monolayer shows an intrinsic negative Poisson's ratio $\sim -0.023$, stemming from its unique puckered hinge structur…
The spin-orbit coupling can lead to exotic states of matter and unexpected behavior of the system properties. In this paper, we investigate the influence of spin-orbit coupling induced by proximity effects on a monolayer of superconductor (with s-wave or d-wave pairing) placed on an insulating bulk. We show that the critical temperatures $T_{c}$ of the superconducting states can be tuned by the spin-orbit coupling both in the case of on-site and inter-site pairing. Moreover, we discuss a possibility of changing the location of the maximal $T_{c}$ from the half-filling into the underdoped or ov…
The Fe-based superconductor Fe (Se,Te) combines non-trivial topology with unconventional superconductivity and may be an ideal platform to realize exotic states such as high-order topological corner modes and Majorana modes. Thin films of Fe (Se,Te) are important for device fabrication, phase sensitive transport measurements and for realizing proposals to engineer higher-order modes. However, while bulk Fe (Se,Te) has been extensively studied with a variety of techniques, the nature of the superconducting order parameter in the monolayer limit has not yet been explored. In this work, we study …
Motivated by recent experimental progress, we study the effect of mechanical deformations on the superconducting pairing symmetries in monolayer black phosphorus (MBP). Starting with phonon-mediated intervalley spin-singlet electron-electron pairing and making use of realistic band parameters obtained through first-principles calculations, we show that the application of weak mechanical strain in the plane of MBP can change the effective $s$-wave and $p$-wave symmetry of the superconducting correlations into effective $d$-wave and $f$-wave symmetries, respectively. This prediction of a change …
We develop a theory for interlayer pairing of chiral electrons in graphene materials which results in an unconventional superconducting (S) state with s-wave spin-triplet order parameter. In a pure bilayer graphene, this superconductivity exhibits a gapless property with an exotic effect of temperature-induced condensation causing an increase of the pairing amplitude (PA) with increasing temperature. We find that a finite doping opens a gap in the excitation spectrum and weakens this anomalous temperature-dependence. We further explore the possibility of realizing variety of pairing patterns w…
We theoretically study the lattice distortion induced first and second order topological phase transition in rectangular FeSe$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ monolayer. When compressing the lattice constant in one direction, our first principles calculation shows that the FeSe$_x$Te$_{1-x}$ undergoes a band inversion at $Γ$ point in a wide dopping range, say $x\in(0.0,0.7)$, which ensures coexistence of the topological band state and the high-T$_{\rm c}$ superconductivity. This unidirectional pressure also leads to the C$_4$ symmetry breaking which is necessary for the monolayer FeSe$_x$Te$_{1-x}$ to support …
Chains of magnetic impurities placed on a superconducting substrate and forming helical spin order provide a promising venue for realizing a topological superconducting phase. An effective tight-binding description of such helical Shiba chains involves long-range (power-law) hopping and pairing amplitudes which induce an unconventional topological critical point. At the critical point, we find exponentially localized Majorana bound states with a short localization length unrelated to a topological gap. Away from the critical point, this exponential decay develops a power-law tail. Our analytic…
In conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Scrieffer (BCS) superconductors, Cooper pairs of electrons of opposite spin (i.e. singlet structure) form the ground state. Equal spin triplet pairs (ESTPs), as in superfluid $^3$He, are of great interest for superconducting spintronics and topological superconductivity, yet remain elusive. Recently, odd-parity ESTPs were predicted to arise in (few-)monolayer superconducting NbSe$_2$, from the non-colinearity between the out-of-plane Ising spin-orbit field (due to the lack of inversion symmetry in monolayer NbSe$_2$) and an applied in-plane magnetic field. These …
Microscopic details such as interactions and Fermiology determine the structure of superconducting pairing beyond the spatial symmetry classification along irreducible point group representations. From the effective pairing vertex, the pairing wave function related to superconducting order unfolds in its orbital-resolved Fourier profile which we call the harmonic fingerprint (HFP). The HFP allows to formulate a concise connection between microsopic parameter changes and their impact on superconductivity. From a random phase approximation analysis of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) involving $d+…
In dirty superconducting wires, quasiparticle states at the Fermi level need not be exponentially localized if spin-rotation symmetry is broken [Brouwer {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85}, 1064 (2000)]. Here we present evidence that not-localized states are generic in the thick-wire limit, while for wires of finite thickness delocalization requires fine tuning of the disorder, consistent with earlier results of Motrunich {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 63}, 224204 (2001)]. The thick-wire limit is defined as the simultaneous limit where the length $L$ of the wire and the number $N$ of prop…
Monolayer WTe$_2$, a centrosymmetric transition metal dichacogenide, has recently been established as a quantum spin Hall insulator and found superconducting upon gating. Here we study the pairing symmetry and topological nature of superconducting WTe$_2$ with a microscopic model at mean-field level. Surprisingly, we find that the spin-triplet phases in our phase diagram all host Majorana modes localized on two opposite corners. Even when the conventional pairing is favored, we find that an intermediate in-plane magnetic field exceeding the Pauli limit stabilizes an unconventional equal-spin p…
Nonlinear phenomena in superconducting resonator circuits are of great significance in the field of quantum technology. We observe thermal self-oscillations in a monolayer graphene flake coupled to Molybdenum-Rhenium superconducting resonator. The graphene flake forms a SINIS junction coupled to the resonator with strong temperature dependent resistance. In certain conditions of pump power and frequency, this nonlinearity leads to thermal self-oscillations appearing as sidebands in cavity transmission measurements with strong temperature dependence and gate tunability. The experimental observa…
Electrons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess both the valley and spin degree of freedom. These internal quantum degrees of freedom have provided an ideal laboratory for exploring both new physical phenomena and electronics and photonics applications. Valley- and spin-dependent optical and electrical properties, originated from Berry curvature effects, have been recently demonstrated. Such Berry curvature effects, together with strong spin-orbit interactions, can further generate unconventional Landau levels (LLs) under a perpendicular magnetic field that support valle…
A spatially non-uniform superconducting phase is proposed as the electronic variational ground state for the attractive interactions between nearest neighbors on graphene's honeycomb lattice, close to and right at the filling one half. The state spontaneously breaks the translational invariance of the lattice into the Kekule pattern of bond order parameters, and it is gapped, spin triplet, and odd under the sublattice exchange. With the increase of attractive interactions we first find the transition from the semimetallic phase into the p-Kekule superconductor, defined as being odd under the e…
We study the pseudo-spin of electron pair in superconducting transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers and show that the pseudo-spin affects the electric transport property of lateral heterojunction of the superconducting and metallic monolayers. The pseudo-spins of two electrons forming a Cooper pair are parallel to each other unlike the real spins being anti-parallel. In the lateral heterojunction, the electronic transport with forming a Cooper pair, the Andreev reflection, is suppressed with the Fermi level crossing the valence band near the edge in the metallic monolayer. We numerically i…
The weak interlayer Van Der Waals material \{beta}-Bi2Pd has recently been established as a strong topological superconductor candidate with unconventional spin-triplet pairing and Majorana zero modes at vortices. In this letter, we study the topological characters and the superconducting pairing, which are still obscure in monolayer \{beta}-Bi2Pd, in light of our effective theoretical model. We find that the non-Rashba spin-orbital coupling plays a critical role in realizing and tuning various novel topological natures. In particular, the spin-triplet p-wave superconducting pairing with Major…
The proximity-induced spin-triplet $f$-wave symmetry pairing in a monolayer molybdenum disulfide-superconductor hybrid features an interesting electron-hole excitations and also effective superconducting subgap, giving rise to a distinct Andreev resonance state. Owing to the complicated Fermi surface and momentum dependency of $f$-wave pair potential, monolayer $MoS_2$ with strong spin-orbit coupling can be considered an intriguing structure to reveal the superconducting state. Actually, this can be possible by calculating the peculiar spin-valley polarized transport of quasiparticles in a rel…
We propose a platform to realize nodal topological superconductors in a superconducting monolayer of MoX$_2$ (X$=$S, Se, Te) using an in-plane magnetic field. The bulk nodal points appear where the spin splitting due to spin-orbit coupling vanishes near the $\pm \boldsymbol{K}$ valleys of the Brillouin zone, and are six or twelve per valley in total. In the nodal topological superconducting phase, the nodal points are connected by flat bands of zero-energy Andreev edge states. These flat bands, which are protected by chiral symmetry, are present for all lattice-termination boundaries except zi…
Using the continuum model, we investigate theoretically contribution of the low-energy electronic excitations to the Raman spectrum of superconducting monolayer graphene. We consider superconducting phases characterised by an isotropic order parameter in a single valley and find a Raman peak at a shift set by the size of the superconducting gap. The height of this peak is proportional to the square root of the gap and the third power of the Fermi level, and we estimate its quantum efficiency as $I\sim10^{-14}$.
The quantum spin Hall (QSH) state was recently demonstrated in monolayers of the transition metal dichalcogenide 1T'-WTe$_2$ and is characterized by a band gap in the two-dimensional (2D) interior and helical one-dimensional (1D) edge states. Inducing superconductivity in the helical edge states would result in a 1D topological superconductor, a highly sought-after state of matter. In the present study, we use a novel dry-transfer flip technique to place atomically-thin layers of WTe$_2$ on a van der Waals superconductor, NbSe$_2$. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS)…
The quantum transport properties of graphene and monolayer $MoS_2$ superconductor heterostructures has been of considerable importance in the recent few years. Layered nature of molybdenum disulfide permits the superconducting correlation induction. Moreover, peculiar dynamical features of monolayer $MoS_2$, such as valence band spin-splitting in the nondegenerate $K$ and $K'$ valleys originated from strong spin-orbit coupling, and considerable direct band gap can make it potentially a useful material for electronics applications. Using the Dirac-like Hamiltonian of $MoS_2$ with taking into ac…
Monolayer graphite films, or graphene, have quasiparticle excitations that can be described by 2+1 dimensional Dirac theory. We demonstrate that this produces an unconventional form of the quantized Hall conductivity $σ_{xy} = - (2 e^2/h)(2n+1)$ with $n=0,1,...$, that notably distinguishes graphene from other materials where the integer quantum Hall effect was observed. This unconventional quantization is caused by the quantum anomaly of the $n=0$ Landau level and was discovered in recent experiments on ultrathin graphite films.
In this paper, the completed investigation of a possible superconducting phase in monolayer indium selenide is determined using first-principles calculations for both the hole and electron doping systems. The hole-doped dependence of the Fermi surface is exclusively fundamental for monolayer InSe. It leads to the extensive modification of the Fermi surface from six separated pockets to two pockets by increasing the hole densities. For low hole doping levels of the system, below the Lifshitz transition point, superconductive critical temperatures $T_c \sim 55-75$ K are obtained within anisotrop…
Liquid-phase chemical exfoliation is ideal to achieve industry scale production of two-dimensional (2D) materials for a wide range of application such as printable electronics, catalysis and energy storage. However, many impactful 2D materials with potentials in quantum technologies can only be studied in lab settings due to their air-sensitivity, and loss of physical performance after chemical processing. Here, we report a simple chemical exfoliation method to create a stable, aqueous, surfactant-free, superconducting ink containing phase-pure 1T'-WS$_2$ monolayers that are isotructural to th…
