We derive a low-energy effective $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ Hamiltonians for monolayer C$_{3}$N at the $ Γ$ and $ M $ points of the Brillouin zone where the band edge in the conduction and valence band can be found. Our analysis of the electronic band symmetries helps to better understand several results of recent ab-initio calculations[1,2] for the optical properties of this material. We also calculate the Landau level spectrum. We find that the Landau level spectrum in the degenerate conduction bands at the $ Γ$ point acquires properties that are reminiscent of the corresponding results in bilayer graphene, but there are important differences as well. Moreover, because of the heavy effective mass, $n$-doped samples may host interesting electron-electron interaction effects.
The electronic Raman scattering of bulk graphite at zero magnetic field reveals a structureless signal characteristic of a metal. For T<~100 K and B > 2 T, several peaks at energies scaling linearly with magnetic field were observed and ascribed to transitions from the lowest energy Landau level(s) (LL) to excited states belonging to the same ladder. The LLs are equally (unequally) spaced for high (low) quantum numbers, being surprisingly consistent with the LL sequence from massive Dirac Fermions (m* = 0.033(2) m_e) with Berry's phase 2πfound in graphene bilayers. These results provide spectr…
Electronic structure of graphene monolayer-bilayer junction in a magnetic field is studied within an effective-mass approximation. The energy spectrum is characterized by interface Landau levels, i.e., the locally flat bands appearing near the boundary region, resulting in a series of characteristic peaks in the local density of states. Their energies are independent of boundary types such as zigzag or armchair. In the atomic scale, the local density of states shows a Kekulé pattern due to the valley mixing in the armchair boundary, while does not in the zigzag boundary.
We consider massless Dirac fermions in a graphene monolayer subject to both a perpendicular magnetic field $B$ and a proximity-induced pairing gap $Δ$. When the chemical potential is at the Dirac point, our exact solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation yields $Δ$-independent relativistic Landau levels. Since eigenstates depend on $Δ$, many observables nevertheless are sensitive to pairing, e.g., the local density of states or the edge state spectrum. By solving the problem with an additional in-plane electric field, we also discuss how snake states are influenced by a pairing gap.
We study a gapped graphene monolayer in a combination of uniform magnetic field and strain-induced uniform pseudomagnetic field. The presence of two fields completely removes the valley degeneracy. The resulting density of states shows a complicated behaviour that can be tuned by adjusting the strength of the fields. We analyze how these features can be observed in the sublattice, valley and full density of states. The analytical expression for the valley DOS is derived.
We study the Landau level spectrum using a multi-band $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ theory in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors. We find that in a wide magnetic field range the Landau levels can be characterized by a harmonic oscillator spectrum and a linear-in-magnetic field term which describes the valley degeneracy breaking. The effect of the non-parabolicity of the band-dispersion on the Landau level spectrum is also discussed. Motivated by recent magnetotransport experiments, we use the self-consistent Born approximation and the Kubo formalism to calculate the Shubnik…
Graphene hybrid planar structures consisting of two regions with different quantum Hall (QH) states exhibit unusual transport properties1-5, originating from chiral edge states equilibration at the interface of the two different regions6. Here we present a sub-nanometre-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) study of a monolayer-bilayer graphene planar junction in the QH regime. The atomically well-defined interface of such a junction allows us to spatially resolve the interface electronic properties. Around the interface, we detect Landau quantization of massless…
A monolayer graphene exists in an environment where a uniform magnetic field interacts a spatially modulated magnetic field. The spatially modulated magnetic field could affect Landau levels due to a uniform magnetic field. The modulation effects on Landau levels are investigated through the Peierl's tight-binding model. The magneto-electronic properties are dominated by the period, the strength, and the direction of a spatially modulated magnetic field. Such a field could induce the growth in dimensionality, the change of energy dispersions, the destroy of state degeneracy, and the creation o…

We study a 2D system of trion-polaritons at the quantum level and demonstrate that for monolayer semiconductors they can exhibit a strongly nonlinear optical response. The effect is due to the composite nature of trion-based excitations resulting in their nontrivial quantum statistical properties, and enhanced phase space filling effects. We present the full quantum theory to describe the statistics of trion-polaritons, and demonstrate that the associated nonlinearity persists at the level of few quanta, where two qualitatively different regimes of photon antibunching are present for weak and …
Novel two-dimensional (2D) emergent fermions and negative Poisson's ratio in 2D materials are fascinating subjects of research. Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we predict that the hexacoordinated Mg$_{2}$C monolayer hosts both exotic properties. We analyze its phonon spectrum, reveal the Raman active modes, and show that it has small in-plane stiffness constants. Particularly, under the tensile strain in the zigzag direction, the Mg$_{2}$C monolayer shows an intrinsic negative Poisson's ratio $\sim -0.023$, stemming from its unique puckered hinge structur…

Non-equilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated systems constitutes a fascinating problem of condensed matter physics with many open questions. Here we investigate the relaxation dynamics of Landau-quantized electron system into spin-valley polarized ground state in a gate-tunable MoSe$_2$ monolayer subjected to a strong magnetic field. The system is driven out of equilibrium with optically injected excitons that depolarize the electron spins and the subsequent electron spin-valley relaxation is probed in time-resolved experiments. We demonstrate that the relaxation rate at millikelvin tempera…
Electrons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess both the valley and spin degree of freedom. These internal quantum degrees of freedom have provided an ideal laboratory for exploring both new physical phenomena and electronics and photonics applications. Valley- and spin-dependent optical and electrical properties, originated from Berry curvature effects, have been recently demonstrated. Such Berry curvature effects, together with strong spin-orbit interactions, can further generate unconventional Landau levels (LLs) under a perpendicular magnetic field that support valle…
Electronic properties of surface areas decoupled from graphite are studied using scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. We show that it is possible to identify decoupled graphene monolayer, Bernal bilayer, and Bernal trilayer on graphite surface according to their tunnelling spectra in high magnetic field. The decoupled monolayer and bilayer exhibit Landau quantization of massless and massive Dirac fermions, respectively. The substrate generates a sizable band gap, ~35 meV, in the Bernal bilayer, therefore, the eightfold degenerate Landau level at the charge neutrality point is split…
We report results of exact diagonalization studies of the spin- and valley-polarized fractional quantum Hall effect in the $N=0$ and 1 Landau levels in graphene. We use an effective model that incorporates Landau level mixing to lowest-order in the parameter $κ= \frac{e^2/ε\ell}{\hbar v_F/\ell}=\frac{e^2}{εv_F\hbar}$ which is magnetic field independent and can only be varied through the choice of substrate. We find Landau level mixing effects are negligible in the $N=0$ Landau level for $κ\lesssim 2$. In fact, the lowest Landau level projected Coulomb Hamiltonian is a better approximation to t…
The strong spin-orbit coupling and the broken inversion symmetry in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) results in spin-valley coupled band structures. Such a band structure leads to novel applications in the fields of electronics and optoelectronics. Density functional theory calculations as well as optical experiments have focused on spin-valley coupling in the valence band. Here we present magnetotransport experiments on high-quality n-type monolayer molybdenum disulphide (MoS$_{2}$) samples, displaying highly resolved Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations at magnetic fields as low a…
The Peierl's tight-binding model, with the band Hamiltonian matrix, is used to calculate the magnetoelectronic structure of a monolayergraphite. There are many flat Landau levels and some oscillatory Landau levels. The low Landau-level energies are characterized by a simple relation, not for others. State degeneracy is, respectively, fourfold degenerate and doubly degenerate at low and high energies. The level spacing declines quickly and then grows gradually in the increase of state energy. The main features of electronic properties are directly reflected in density of states. The predicted r…
The electronic properties of a graphene monolayer in a magnetic and a strain-induced pseudo-magnetic field are studied in the presence of spin-orbit interactions (SOI) that are artificially enhanced, e.g., by suitable adatom deposition. For the homogeneous case, we provide analytical results for the Landau level eigenstates for arbitrary intrinsic and Rashba SOI, including also the Zeeman field. The edge states in a semi-infinite geometry are studied in the absence of the Rashba term. For a critical value of the magnetic field, we find a quantum phase transition separating two phases with spin…
We study the infrared cyclotron resonance of high mobility monolayer graphene encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride, and simultaneously observe several narrow resonance lines due to interband Landau level transitions. By holding the magnetic field strength, $B$, constant while tuning the carrier density, $n$, we find the transition energies show a pronounced non-monotonic dependence on the Landau level filling factor, $ν\propto n/B$. This constitutes direct evidence that electron-electron interactions contribute to the Landau level transition energies in graphene, beyond the single-particle …
We report the observation of low-lying collective charge and spin excitations in the second Landau level at ν = 2 + 1/3 and also for the very fragile states at ν = 2 + 2/5, 2 + 3/8 in inelastic light scattering experiments. These modes exhibit a clear dependence on filling factor and temperature substantiating the unique access to the characteristic neutral excitation spectra of the incompressible FQHE states. A detailed mode analysis reveals low energy modes at around 70 μeV and a sharp mode slightly below the Zeeman energy interpreted as gap and spin wave excitation, respectively. The lowest…
Monolayers (MLs) of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit unusual electrical behavior under magnetic fields due to their intrinsic spin-orbit coupling and lack of inversion symmetry. While recent experiments have also identified the critical role of carrier interactions within these materials, a complete mapping of the ambipolar Landau level (LL) sequence has remained elusive. Here, we use single-electron transistors to perform LL spectroscopy in ML WSe$_2$, for the first time providing a comprehensive picture of the electronic structure of a ML TMD for both electrons and holes. We f…
A four-band exciton Hamiltonian is constructed starting from the single-particle Dirac Hamiltonian for charge carriers in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The angular part of the exciton wave function can be separated from the radial part, in the case of zero center of mass momentum excitons, by exploiting the eigenstates of the total exciton angular momentum operator with which the Hamiltonian commutes. We explain why this approach fails for excitons with finite center of mass momentum or in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and present an approximation to resol…
The complex nature of filling factor $ν$=0 of monolayer graphene is studied in magnetotransport experiments. As function of perpendicular magnetic field a metal-insulator transition is observed, which is attributed to disorder-induced Landau level broadening in the canted antiferromagnetic phase. In the metallic regime a separation of the zeroth Landau level appears and signs of the quantum spin Hall effect are seen near $ν$=0. In addition to local transport, nonlocal transport experiments show results being consistent with helical edge transport.
The transport properties of the two-dimensional system in HgTe-based quantum wells containing simultaneously electrons and holes of low densities are examined. The Hall resistance, as a function of perpendicular magnetic field, reveals an unconventional behavior, different from the classical N-shaped dependence typical for bipolar systems with electron-hole asymmetry. The quantum features of magnetotransport are explained by means of numerical calculation of the Landau level spectrum based on the Kane Hamiltonian. The origin of the quantum Hall plateau σxy = 0 near the charge neutrality point …
We investigate theoretically the Landau levels (LLs) and magneto-transport properties of phosphorene under a perpendicular magnetic field within the framework of the effective \textbf{\emph{k$\cdot$p}} Hamiltonian and tight-binding (TB) model. At low field regime, we find that the LLs linearly depend both on the LL index $n$ and magnetic field $B$, which is similar with that of conventional semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas. The Landau splittings of conduction and valence band are different and the wavefunctions corresponding to the LLs are strongly anisotropic due to the different an…
A generalized tight-binding model, which is based on the subenvelope functions of the different sublattices, is developed to explore the novel magnetic quantization in monolayer gray tin. The effects due to the $sp^{3}$ bonding, the spin-orbital coupling, the magnetic field and the electric field are simultaneously taken into consideration. The unique magneto-electronic properties lie in two groups of low-lying Landau levels, with different orbital components, localization centers, state degeneracy, spin configurations, and magnetic- and electric-field dependences. The first and second groups …

We report on magneto-transport measurements on low-density, large-area monolayer epitaxial graphene devices grown on SiC. We show that the zero-energy Landau level (LL) in monolayer graphene, which is predicted to be magnetic field ($B$)-independent, can float up above the Fermi energy at low $B$. This is supported by the temperature ($T$)-driven flow diagram approximated by the semi-circle law as well as the $T$-independent point in the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ near $e^2/h$. Our experimental data are in sharp contrast to conventional understanding of the zeroth LL and metallic-like behavior…
We investigate Landau-quantized excitonic absorption and luminescence of monolayer WSe$_2$ under magnetic field. We observe gate-dependent quantum oscillations in the bright exciton and trions (or exciton-polarons) as well as the dark trions and their phonon replicas. Our results reveal spin- and valley-polarized Landau levels (LLs) with filling factors $n = +0, +1$ in the bottom conduction band and $n = -0$ to $-6$ in the top valence band, including the Berry-curvature-induced $n = \pm0$ LLs of massive Dirac fermions. The LL filling produces periodic plateaus in the exciton energy shift accom…
We report simultaneous transport and scanning microwave impedance microscopy to examine the correlation between transport quantization and filling of the bulk Landau levels in the quantum Hall regime in gated graphene devices. Surprisingly, a comparison of these measurements reveals that quantized transport typically occurs below the complete filling of bulk Landau levels, when the bulk is still conductive. This result points to a revised understanding of transport quantization when carriers are accumulated by gating. We discuss the implications on transport study of the quantum Hall effect in…
Two-dimensional gapped semi-Dirac (GSD) materials are systems with a finite band gap that their charge carriers behave relativistically in one direction and Schrödinger-like in the other. In the present work, we show that besides the two well-known energy bands features (curvature and chirality), the band-gap parameter also play a crucial role in the index- and magnetic field-dependence of the Landau levels (LLs) in a GSD system. We take the monolayer phosphorene as a GSD representative example to explicitly provide physical insights into the role of this parameter in determining the index- an…
We study the magnetotransport properties of high mobility holes in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$, which display well defined Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations, and quantum Hall states (QHSs) in high magnetic fields. In both mono and bilayer WSe$_2$, the SdH oscillations and the QHSs occur predominantly at even filling factors, evincing a two-fold Landau level degeneracy. The Fourier transform analysis of the SdH oscillations in bilayer WSe$_2$ reveal the presence of two subbands localized in the top or the bottom layer, as well as negative compressibility. From the temperature dependence of…
Layer stacking and crystal lattice symmetry play important roles in the band structure and the Landau levels of multilayer graphene. ABA-stacked trilayer graphene possesses mirror-symmetry-protected monolayer-like and bilayer-like band structures. Broken mirror symmetry by a perpendicular electric field therefore induces hybridization between these bands and various quantum Hall phases emerge. We experimentally explore the evolution of Landau levels in ABA-stacked trilayer graphene under electric field. We observe a variety of valley and orbital dependent Landau level evolutions. These evoluti…
The electron-hole symmetry in graphene monolayer, which is analogous to the inherent symmetric structure between electrons and positrons of the Universe, plays a crucial role in the chirality and chiral tunnelling of massless Dirac fermions. Here we demonstrate that both strain and charged-defect scattering could break this symmetry dramatically in graphene monolayer. In our experiment, the Fermi velocities of electrons and holes are measured directly through Landau level spectroscopy. In strained graphene with lattice deformation and curvature, the and are measured as 1.2 x 106 m/s and 1.02 x…
We review recent work on superlattices in monolayer and bilayer graphene. We highlight the role of the quasiparticle chirality in generating new Dirac fermion modes with tunable anisotropic velocities in one dimensional (1D) superlattices in both monolayer and bilayer graphene. We discuss the structure of the Landau levels and magnetotransport in such superlattices over a wide range of perpendicular (orbital) magnetic fields. In monolayer graphene, we show that an orbital magnetic field can reverse the anisotropy of the transport imposed by the superlattice potential, suggesting possible switc…
The valley dependent optical selection rules in recently discovered monolayer group-VI transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) make possible optical control of valley polarization, a crucial step towards valleytronic applications. However, in presence of Landaul level(LL) quantization such selection rules are taken over by selection rules between the LLs, which are not necessarily valley contrasting. Using MoS$_{2}$ as an example we show that the spatial inversion-symmetry breaking results in unusual valley dependent inter-LL selection rules, which directly locks polarization to valley. We fin…
We report polarization-resolved resonant reflection spectroscopy of a charge-tunable atomically-thin valley semiconductor hosting tightly bound excitons coupled to a dilute system of fully spin- and valley-polarized holes in the presence of a strong magnetic field. We find that exciton-hole interactions manifest themselves in hole-density dependent, Shubnikov-de Haas-like oscillations in the energy and line broadening of the excitonic resonances. These oscillations are evidenced to be precisely correlated with the occupation of Landau levels, thus demonstrating that strong interactions between…
We study the magnetic response of buckled honeycomb-lattice materials. The buckling breaks the sublattice symmetry, enhances the spin-orbit coupling, and allows the tuning of a topological quantum phase transition. As a result, there are two doubly degenerate spin-valley coupled massive Dirac bands, which exhibit an unconventional Hall plateau sequence under strong magnetic fields. We show how to externally control the splitting of anomalous zeroth Landau levels, the prominent Landau level crossing effects, and the polarizations of spin, valley, and sublattice degrees of freedom. In particular…
The wavefunction of massless Dirac fermions is a two-component spinor. In graphene, a one-atom-thick film showing two-dimensional Dirac-like electronic excitations, the two-component representation reflects the amplitude of the electron wavefunction on the A and B sublattices. This unique property provides unprecedented opportunities to image the two components of massless Dirac fermions spatially. Here we report atomic resolution imaging of the two-component Dirac-Landau levels in a gapped graphene monolayer by scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. A gap of about 20 meV, driven by …
The minimum of 4-terminal conductance occurring at its charge neutral point has proven to be a robust empirical feature of graphene, persisting with changes to temperature, applied magnetic field, substrate, and layer thickness, though the theoretical mechanisms involved in transport about this point -- vanishing density of states, conventional band gap opening, and broken symmetry quantum Hall mobility gaps -- vary widely depending on the regime. In this paper, we report on observations of a regime where the 4-terminal conductance minimum ceases to exist: transport in monolayer graphene conne…
We have investigated the conductance properties of C60-containing self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), which are used in organic field-effect transistors, employing a combination of molecular-dynamics simulations, semiempirical electronic structure calculations and Landauer transport theory. The results reveal the close relation between the transport characteristics and the structural and electronic properties of the SAM. Furthermore, both local pathways of charge transport in the SAMs and the influence of structural fluctuations are analyzed.
The electromagnetic response of bilayer graphene in a magnetic field is studied in comparison with that of monolayer graphene. Both types of graphene turn out to be qualitatively quite similar in dielectric and screening characteristics, especially those deriving from vacuum fluctuations, but the effect is generally much more sizable for bilayers. The presence of the zero-(energy-)mode Landau levels is a feature specific to graphene. In bilayers, unlike in monolayers, the effect of the zero-mode levels becomes visible and even dominant in density response as an externally-controllable band gap…
We describe an infrared transmission study of a thin layer of bulk graphite in magnetic fields up to B = 34 T. Two series of absorption lines whose energy scales as sqrtB and B are present in the spectra and identified as contributions of massless holes at the H point and massive electrons in the vicinity of the K point, respectively. We find that the optical response of the K point electrons corresponds, over a wide range of energy and magnetic field, to a graphene bilayer with an effective inter-layer coupling 2γ_1, twice the value for a real graphene bilayer, which reflects the crystal orde…
Monolayer graphite films, or graphene, have quasiparticle excitations that can be described by 2+1 dimensional Dirac theory. We demonstrate that this produces an unconventional form of the quantized Hall conductivity $σ_{xy} = - (2 e^2/h)(2n+1)$ with $n=0,1,...$, that notably distinguishes graphene from other materials where the integer quantum Hall effect was observed. This unconventional quantization is caused by the quantum anomaly of the $n=0$ Landau level and was discovered in recent experiments on ultrathin graphite films.
