We investigate the modified gravity in which the Lagrangian of gravity is a function of the trace of the n-th matrix power of Ricci tensor in a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker(FLRW) spacetime. When n is negative, the inverse of Ricci tensor, also called the anticurvature tensor, will be introduced. We design a new class of Ricci-inverse theory containing two anticurvature scalars and resulting to be free from the singularity problem.
We introduce a novel theory of gravity based on the inverse of the Ricci tensor, that we call the anticurvature tensor. We derive the general equations of motion for any Lagrangian function of the curvature and anticurvature scalars. We then demonstrate a no-go theorem: no Lagrangian that contains terms linear in any positive or negative power of the anticurvature scalar can drive an evolution from deceleration to acceleration, as required by observations. This effectively rules out many realizations of this theory, as we illustrate in detail in a particular case. Finally, we speculate on how …
Recently, Amendola et al. proposed a geometrical theory of gravity containing higher-order derivative terms. The authors introduced anticurvature scalar $(A)$, which is the trace of the inverse of the Ricci tensor ($A^{μν} = R_{μν}^{-1}$). In this work, we consider two classes of Ricci-inverse -- Class I and Class II -- models. Class I models are of the form $f(R, A)$ where $f$ is a function of Ricci and anticurvature scalars. Class II models are of the form ${\cal F}(R, A^{μν}A_{μν})$ where ${\cal F}$ is a function of Ricci scalar and square of anticurvature tensor. For both these classes of …
In this paper, we propose an extension of the Ricci-inverse gravity, which has been proposed recently as a very novel type of fourth-order gravity, by introducing a second order term of the so-called anticurvature scalar as a correction. The main purpose of this paper is that we would like to see whether the extended Ricci-inverse gravity model admits the homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric as its stable inflationary solution. However, a no-go theorem for inflation in this extended Ricci-inverse gravity is shown to appear through a stability analysis based on t…
In the present work we have studied some features of the generalized Brans-Dicke (BD) model in which the scalar field is allowed to couple non-minimally with matter sector. Extended holographic Ricci dark energy (EHRDE) has been considered in the above framework of BD cosmology. Some restrictions have been derived for the BD parameter $ω$ and a stronger matter-chameleon coupling has been observed with expansion of the universe. In this framework, the equation of state parameter of EHRDE has behaved like quintom. Also, we have reconstructed the potential and coupling function for BD model for t…
In this letter, cosmology of a simple NMDC gravity with $ξR ϕ_{,μ}ϕ^{,μ}$ term and a free kinetic term is considered in flat geometry and in presence of dust matter. A logarithm field transformation $ϕ' = μ\ln ϕ$ is proposed phenomenologically. Assuming slow-roll approximation, equation of motion, scalar field solution and potential are derived as function of kinematic variables. The field solution and potential are found straightforwardly for power-law, de-Sitter and super-acceleration expansions. Slow-roll parameters and slow-roll condition are found to depend on more than one variable. At l…
In this work, we studied the Power Law and the Logarithmic Entropy Corrected versions of the Ricci Dark Energy (RDE) model in a spatially non-flat universe and in the framework of Hořava-Lifshitz cosmology. For the two cases containing non-interacting and interacting RDE and Dark Matter (DM), we obtained the exact differential equation that determines the evolutionary form of the RDE energy density parameter. Moreover, we obtained the expressions of the deceleration parameter $q$ and, using a parametrization of the equation of state (EoS) parameter $ω_D$ as $ω_D\left(z\right)=ω_0+ω_1 z$, we de…
In the framework of noncompact Kaluza-Klein theory, we investigate a $(4+1)$-dimensional universe consisting of a $(4+1)$ dimensional Robertson-Walker type metric coupled to a $(4+1)$ dimensional energy-momentum tensor. The matter part consists of an energy density together with a pressure subject to 4D part of the $(4+1)$ dimensional energy-momentum tensor. The dark part consists of just a dark pressure $\bar{p}$, corresponding to the extra-dimension endowed by a scalar field, with no element of dark energy. It is shown that for a flat universe, coupled with the non-vacuum states of the scala…
We revisit spatially flat FLRW cosmology in light of recent advances in standard model relativistic fluid dynamics. Modern fluid dynamics requires the presence of curvature-matter terms in the energy-momentum tensor for consistency. These terms are linear in the Ricci scalar and tensor, such that the corresponding cosmological model is referred to as ``Ricci cosmology''. No cosmological constant is included, there are no inflaton fields, bulk viscosity is assumed to be zero and we only employ standard Einstein gravity. Analytic solutions to Ricci cosmology are discussed, and we find that it is…
We have investigated some bouncing models in the framework of an extended gravity theory where the usual Ricci scalar in the gravitational action is replaced by a sum of the Ricci scalar and a term proportional to the trace of the energy momentum tensor. The dynamical parameters of the model are derived in most general manner. We considered two bouncing scenarios through an exponential and a power law scale factor. The non singular bouncing models also favour a late time cosmic speed up phenomenon. The dynamical behaviour of the equation of state parameter is studied for the models. It is obse…
Recently, a new cosmological framework, dubbed Ricci Cosmology, has been proposed. Such a framework has emerged from the study of relativistic dynamics of fluids out of equilibrium in a curved background and is characterised by the presence of deviations from the equilibrium pressure in the energy-momentum tensor which are due to linear terms in the Ricci scalar and the Ricci tensor. The coefficients in front of such terms are called the second order transport coefficients and they parametrise the fluid response to the pressure terms arising from the spacetime curvature. Under the preliminary …

We consider the dynamics of a cosmological substratum of pressureless matter and holographic dark energy with a cutoff length proportional to the Ricci scale. Stability requirements for the matter perturbations are shown to single out a model with a fixed relation between the present matter fraction $Ω_{m0}$ and the present value $ω_{0}$ of the equation-of-state parameter of the dark energy. This model has the same number of free parameters as the $Λ$CDM model but it has no $Λ$CDM limit. We discuss the consistency between background observations and the mentioned stability-guaranteeing paramet…
Braneworld scenarios consider our observable universe as a brane embedded in a 5D space, named bulk. In this work, I derive the field equations of a braneworld model in a generalized theory of gravitation, namely $f(R,T)$ gravity, with $R$ and $T$, representing the Ricci scalar and the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, respectively. The cosmological parameters obtained from this approach are in agreement with recent constraints from Supernovae Ia data combined with baryon acoustic oscillations and cosmic microwave background observations, favouring such an alternative description of the uni…
This paper is devoted to investigate the exact solutions of Bianchi type $I$ spacetime in the context of $f(R,T)$ gravity [1], where $f(R,T)$ is an arbitrary function of Ricci scalar $R$ and trace of the energy momentum tensor $T$. For this purpose, we find two exact solutions using the assumption of constant deceleration parameter and variation law of Hubble parameter. The obtained solutions correspond to two different models of the universe. The physical behaviour of these models is also discussed.
The field equations in FRW background for the so called C-theories are presented and investigated. In these theories the usual Ricci scalar is substituted with $f(\mathcal{R})$ where $\mathcal{R}$ is a Ricci scalar related to a conformally scaled metric $\hat{g}_{μν} = \mathcal{C}(\mathcal{R})g_{μν}$, where the conformal factor itself depends on $\mathcal{R}$. It is shown that homogeneous perturbations of this Ricci scalar around general relativity FRW background of a large class of these theories are either inconsistent or unstable.
We study the shear dynamics of higher dimensional Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmology by considering a non-perfect fluid which exerts different pressure in the normal and extra dimensions. We generalise the definition of shear tensor for higher dimensional space-time and prove it to be consistent with the evolution equation for shear tensor obtained from the Ricci identities. The evolution of shear tensor is investigated numerically. The role of extra dimensions and other parameters involved in shear dynamics is discussed in detail. We find that with increase in anisotropy par…
The Newtonian Lagrangian perturbation theory is a widely used framework to study structure formation in cosmology in the nonlinear regime. We review a general-relativistic formulation of such a perturbation approach, emphasizing results on already developed extensive formalism including among other aspects: the non-perturbative modeling of Ricci and Weyl curvatures, gravitational waves and pressure-supported fluids. We discuss subcases of exact solutions related to Szekeres Class II and, as exact average model, Ricci-flat LTB models. This latter forms the basis of a generalization that we then…
We examine the evolution of universe in $f(R,T)$ gravity where $R$ is the Ricci curvature and $T$ is the trace of energy momentum tensor. We focus on the specific form $f(R,T) = R+f(T)$ and explicitly find out the relation between $f(T)$ and state of equation $w$ by adiabatic condition. All possible modes of evolution of the scale factor for the five kinds of state of equation, $w= \pm 1, \pm 1/3, 0$ are exhibited. We simulate numerically the plots of redshift versus distance modulus for three interesting modes and then obtain the good fitting curve compared with the astronomical observation d…
We present the exact equation for evolution of Bianchi I cosmological model, considering a non-tilted perfect fluid in a matter dominated universe. We use the definition of shear tensor and later we prove it is consistent with the evolution equation for shear tensor obtained from Ricci identities and widely known in literature [3], [5], [9]. Our result is compared with the equation given by Ellis and van Elst in [3] and Tsagas, Challinor and Maartens [5]. We consider that it is important to clarify the notation used in [3], [5] related with the covariant derivative and the behavior of the shea…
We present the solution space of the field equations in the Einstein-aether theory for the case of a vacuum Bianchi Type V space-time. We also find that there are portions of the initial parameters space for which no solution is admitted by the reduced equations. Whenever solutions do exist, their physical interpretation is examined through the behavior of Ricci and/or Kretsmann scalar, as well as with the identification of the effective energy momentum tensor in terms of a perfect fluid. There are cases in which no singularities appear and others where the effective fluid is isotropic.
The two-dimensional renormalization group acting as the Ricci flow $Λ\frac{\partial}{\partialΛ} g_{μν} = R_{μν}$ produces a specific 1+3 dimensional space-time metric which describes an expanding universe that starts with a big bang $a \sim t^{\scriptscriptstyle 1/\sqrt3}$ then decelerates until $z=0.2$ then accelerates until ending at $t_{\max}=1.6\,t_{H}$ with a big blowup $a \sim (t_{\max}-t)^{\scriptscriptstyle -1/\sqrt3}$. The only free parameters are the overall time scale and the value of the present time $t_{0}$. These are fixed by the Hubble constant $H_{0}=t_{H}^{-1}$ and the present…
In this paper, we have studied the bouncing behavior of the cosmological models formulated at the background of the Hubble function in the F(R, G) theory of gravity, where R and G denote the Ricci scalar and Gauss-Bonnet invariant. The actions of bouncing cosmology are studied under consideration of different viable models and can resolve the difficulty of singularity in standard Big-Bang cosmology. Both models show bouncing behavior and satisfy the bouncing cosmological properties. Models based on dynamical, deceleration, and energy conditions indicate the accelerating behavior at the late ev…
We analytically derive the covariant form of the Riemann (curvature) tensor for homogeneous Metric-Affine Cosmologies. That is, we present, in a Cosmological setting, the most general covariant form of the full Riemann tensor including also its non-Riemannian pieces which are associated to spacetime torsion and non-metricity. Having done so we also compute a list of the curvature tensor by-products such as Ricci tensor, homothetic curvature, Ricci scalar, Einstein tensor etc. Finally we derive the generalized Metric-Affine version of the usual Gauss-Bonnet density in this background and demons…
Some phantom cosmological models without big rip singularity have been constructed in a simple extended theory of gravity. In the geometrical part of the action, a minimally coupled linear function of the Ricci Scalar and the trace of the energy momentum tensor have been considered in place of the Ricci scalar. Four Little Rip and Pseudo Rip models have been investigated where the equation of state parameter evolves asymptotically and sufficiently rapidly to $-1$. The effect of the coupling constant of the extended gravity theory on the dynamics has been discussed. Possible wormhole solutions …
We assume the cosmological dark sector to consist of pressureless matter and holographic dark energy with a cutoff length proportional to the Ricci scale. The requirement of separate energy-momentum conservation of the components is shown to establish a relation between the matter fraction and the (necessarily time-dependent) equation-of-state parameter of the dark energy. Focusing on intrinsically adiabatic pressure perturbations of the dark-energy component, the matter perturbations are found as linear combinations of the total energy-density perturbations of the cosmic medium and the relati…
Spherically symmetric spacetimes are ambient spaces for models of stellar collapse and inhomogeneous cosmology. We obtain results for the Weyl tensor and the covariant form of the Ricci tensor on general doubly warped (DW) spacetimes. In a spherically symmetric metric, the Ricci and electric tensors become rank-2, built with a velocity vector field and its acceleration. Their structure dictates the general form of the energy-momentum tensor in the Einstein equations in DW spherical metrics. The anisotropic pressure and the heat current of an imperfect fluid descend from the gradient of the acc…
We analyze the cosmological implementation of Palatini $f(R)$ theories, constructed with a Nieh-Yan term and solved with respect to the torsion. We consider the relevant case of the quadratic correction to the Hilbert-Palatini action in the Ricci scalar, mimicking the Starobinsky model of the metric formulation. We point out the emergence of peculiar cosmological scenarios, depending on the sign of such correction, able to reproduce bouncing settings and to restore the standard Universe dynamics in the late asymptotic limit. Furthermore, we outline the settling of Little-Rip dynamics, which ca…
We consider, in Palatini formalism, a modified gravity of which the scalar field derivative couples to Einstein tensor. In this scenario, Ricci scalar, Ricci tensor and Einstein tensor are functions of connection field. As a result, the connection field gives rise to relation, $h_{μν} = f g_{μν}$ between effective metric, $h_{μν}$ and the usual metric $g_{μν}$ where $f \,=\,1 - κϕ^{,α}ϕ_{,α}/2 $. In FLRW universe, NMDC coupling constant is limited in a range of $ -2/ \dotϕ^{2} < κ\leq \infty $ preserving Lorentz signature of the effective metric. Slowly-rolling regime provides $κ< 0$ forbiddin…
We investigate the effects of noncommutativity between the position-position, position-momentum and momentum-momentum of a phase space corresponding to a modified cosmological model. We show that the existence of such noncommutativity results in a Moyal Poisson algebra between the phase space variables in which the product law between the functions is of the kind of an $α$-deformed product. We then transform the variables in such a way that the Poisson brackets between the dynamical variables take the form of a usual Poisson bracket but this time with a noncommutative structure. For a power la…
We provide further evidence that the canonical quantization of cosmological models eliminates the classical Big Bang singularity, using the {\it DeBroglie-Bohm} interpretation of quantum mechanics. The usual criterion for absence of the Big Bang singularity in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker quantum cosmological models is the non-vanishing of the expectation value of the scale factor. We compute the `local expectation value' of the Ricci and Kretschmann scalars, for some quantum FRW models. We show that they are finite for all time. Since these scalars are elements of general scalar polynomials in …
We study the field equations of modified theories of gravity in which the lagrangian is a general function of the Ricci scalar and Ricci-squared terms in Palatini formalism. We show that the independent connection can be expressed as the Levi-Civita connection of an auxiliary metric which, in particular cases of interest, is related with the physical metric by means of a disformal transformation. This relation between physical and auxiliary metric boils down to a conformal transformation in the case of f(R) theories. We also show with explicit models that the inclusion of Ricci squared terms i…

We study a novel class of higher curvature gravity models in $n$ spacetime dimensions which we call Ricci polynomial gravity. The action is consisted purely of a polynomial in Ricci curvature of order $N$. In the absence of the second order terms in the action, the models are ghost free around the Minkowski vacuum. By appropriately choosing the coupling coefficients in front of each terms in the action, it is shown that the models can have multiple vacua with different effective cosmological constants, and can be made free of ghost and scalar degrees of freedom around at least one of the maxim…
We consider extensions of General Relativity based on the non-local function $f(R, \Box^{-1} R)$, where $R$ is the Ricci curvature scalar and the non-locality is due to the term $\Box^{-1} R$. We focus on cosmological minisuperspaces and select viable models by the Noether Symmetry Approach. Then we find viable exact solutions pointing out the role of non-locality in cosmology.
We consider curvature-teleparallel $F(R,T)$ gravity, where the gravitational Lagrangian density is given by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar $R$ and the torsion scalar $T$. Using the Noether Symmetry Approach, we show that the functional form of the $F(R, T)$ function, can be determined by the presence of symmetries . Furthermore, we obtain exact solutions through to the presence of conserved quantities and the reduction of cosmological dynamical system. Example of particular cosmological models are considered.
The $f(R,T)$ gravity is an extended theory of gravity in which the gravitational action contains general terms of both the Ricci scalar $R$ and trace of the energy-momentum tensor $T$. In this way, $f(R,T)$ models are capable of describing a non-minimal coupling between geometry (through terms in $R$) and matter (through terms in $T$). In this article we construct a cosmological model from the simplest non-minimal matter-geometry coupling within the $f(R,T)$ gravity formalism, by means of an effective energy-momentum tensor, given by the sum of the usual matter energy-momentum tensor with a da…
The theoretical and observational consequences of thermodynamics of open systems, which allow particle creation are investigated in modified $f(R,T)$ ($R$ is the Ricci scalar and $T$ is the trace of energy-momentum tensor) theory of gravity within the framework of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker line element. A simplest particular model $f(R,T)=R+2f(T)$ and "gamma-law" equation of state $p=(γ-1)ρ$ are assumed to explore the role of particle creation in the early and late time evolution of the universe. A power-law expansion model is proposed for $0\leq γ\leq 2$ by considering the natural phe…
We consider the cosmology of modified gravity models in which Newton's constant is distorted by a function of the inverse d'Alembertian acting on the Ricci scalar. We derive a technique for choosing the distortion function so as to fit an arbitrary expansion history. This technique is applied numerically to the case of LambdaCDM cosmology, and the result agrees well with a simple hyperbolic tangent.
