In this paper, we study the rigidity of hyperbolic polyhedral 3-manifolds and the volume optimization program of angle structures. We first study the rigidity of decorated 1-3 type hyperbolic polyhedral metrics on 3-manifolds which are isometric gluing of decorated 1-3 type hyperbolic tetrahedra. Here a 1-3 type hyperbolic tetrahedron is a truncated hyperbolic tetrahedron with one hyperideal vertex and three ideal vertices. A decorated 1-3 type polyhedron is a 1-3 type hyperbolic polyhedron with a horosphere centered at each ideal vertex. We show that a decorated 1-3 type hyperbolic polyhedral metric is determined up to isometry and change of decorations by its curvature. We also prove several results on the volume optimization program of Casson and Rivin, i,e. Casson-Rivin's volume optimization program is shown to be still valid for 1-3 type ideal triangulated 3-manifolds. We also get a strongly 1-efficiency triangulation when assuming the existence of an angle structure. On the whole, we follow the spirit of Luo-Yang's work in 2018 to prove our main results. The main differences come from that the hyperbolic tetrahedra considered here have completely different geometry with those considered in Luo-Yang's work in 2018.
This paper investigates several global rigidity issues for polyhedral surfaces including inversive distance circle packings. Inversive distance circle packings are polyhedral surfaces introduced by P. Bowers and K. Stephenson as a generalization of Andreev-Thurston's circle packing. They conjectured that inversive distance circle packings are rigid. Using a recent work of R. Guo on variational principle associated to the inversive distance circle packing, we prove rigidity conjecture of Bowers-Stephenson in this paper. We also show that each polyhedral metric on a triangulated surface is deter…
We study the rigidity of polyhedral surfaces using variational principle. The action functionals are derived from the cosine laws. The main focus of this paper is on the cosine law for a non-triangular region bounded by three possibly disjoint geodesics. Several of these cosine laws were first discovered and used by Fenchel and Nielsen. By studying the derivative of the cosine laws, we discover a uniform approach on several variational principles on polyhedral surfaces with or without boundary. As a consequence, the work of Penner, Bobenko-Springborn and Thurston on rigidity of polyhedral surf…
We study rigidity of polyhedral surfaces and the moduli space of polyhedral surfaces using variational principles. Curvature like quantities for polyhedral surfaces are introduced. Many of them are shown to determine the polyhedral metric up to isometry. The action functionals in the variational approaches are derived from the cosine law and the Lengendre transformation of them. These include energies used by Colin de Verdiere, Braegger, Rivin, Cohen-Kenyon-Propp, Leibon and Bobenko-Springborn for variational principles on triangulated surfaces. Our study is based on a set of identities satisf…
The vertex scaling for piecewise linear metrics on polyhedral surfaces was introduced by Luo, who proved the local rigidity by establishing a variational principle and conjectured the global rigidity. Luo's conjecture was solved by Bobenko-Pinkall-Springborn, who also introduced the vertex scaling for piecewise hyperbolic metrics and proved its global rigidity. Bobenko-Pinkall-Spingborn's proof is based on their observation of the connection of vertex scaling and the geometry of polyhedra in $3$-dimensional hyperbolic space and the concavity of the volume of ideal and hyper-ideal tetrahedra. I…
A discrete conformality for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces is introduced in this paper. This discrete conformality is shown to be computable. It is proved that each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface is discrete conformal to a unique hyperbolic polyhedral metric with a given discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula. Furthermore, the hyperbolic polyhedral metric with given curvature can be obtained using a discrete Yamabe flow with surgery. In particular, each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface with negative Euler characteristic is discrete conformal to a u…
The paper is centered around a new proof of the infinitesimal rigidity of convex polyhedra. The proof is based on studying derivatives of the discrete Hilbert-Einstein functional on the space of "warped polyhedra" with a fixed metric on the boundary. This approach is in a sense dual to using derivatives of the volume in order to prove the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity of convex polyhedra, which deals with deformations that preserve face normals and face areas. In the spherical and in the hyperbolic-de Sitter space, there is a perfect duality between the Hilbert-Einstein functional and the volum…
In this paper, we develop a new index theory for manifolds with polyhedral boundary. As an application, we prove Gromov's dihedral extremality conjecture regarding comparisons of scalar curvatures, mean curvatures and dihedral angles between two compact manifolds with polyhedral boundary in all dimensions. We also prove Gromov's dihedral rigidity conjecture for a class of positively curved manifolds with polyhedral boundary in all dimensions.
Let W be a compact hyperbolic n-manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We prove that if n>3 then the holonomy representation of pi_1 (W) into the isometry group of hyperbolic n-space is infinitesimally rigid.
In this note, we consider the rigidity of the focal decomposition of closed hyperbolic surfaces. We show that, generically, the focal decomposition of a closed hyperbolic surface does not allow for non-trivial topological deformations, without changing the hyperbolic structure of the surface. By classical rigidity theory this is also true in dimension $n \geq 3$. Our current result extends a previous result that flat tori in dimension $n \geq 2$ that are focally equivalent are isometric modulo rescaling.
We study hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces with faces isometric to regular hyperbolic polygons satisfying that the total angles at vertices are at least $2π.$ The combinatorial information of these surfaces is shown to be identified with that of Euclidean polyhedral surfaces with negative combinatorial curvature everywhere. We prove that there is a gap between areas of non-smooth hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces and the area of smooth hyperbolic surfaces. The numerical result for the gap is obtained for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces, homeomorphic to the double torus, whose 1-skeletons are cubic gr…
We prove that a 3-dimensional hyperbolic cusp with convex polyhedral boundary is uniquely determined by the metric induced on its boundary. Furthemore, any hyperbolic metric on the torus with cone singularities of positive curvature can be realized as the induced metric on the boundary of a convex polyhedral cusp. The proof uses the total scalar curvature functional on the space of ``cusps with particles'', which are hyperbolic cone-manifolds with the singular locus a union of half-lines. We prove, in addition, that convex polyhedral cusps with particles are rigid with respect to the induced m…
In the last section of \cite{CompHyp} it is proved that the map $\mathcal{I}$ is a finite-sheeted covering map between $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{M}$. As $\mathcal{M}$ is simply connected it is deduced that $\mathcal{I}$ is a homeomorphism. The fact that $\mathcal{P}$ is connected is missing. Here we provide a proof.
We prove global rigidity for compact hyperbolic and spherical cone-3-manifolds with cone-angles $\leq π$ (which are not Seifert fibered in the spherical case), furthermore for a class of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds of finite volume with cone-angles $\leq π$, possibly with boundary consisting of totally geodesic hyperbolic turnovers. To that end we first generalize our local rigidity result to the setting of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds of finite volume as above. We then use the geometric techniques developed by Boileau, Leeb and Porti to deform the cone-manifold structure to a complete non-sing…
This paper investigates the combinatorial $α$-curvature for vertex scaling of piecewise hyperbolic metrics on polyhedral surfaces, which is a parameterized generalization of the classical combinatorial curvature. A discrete uniformization theorem for combinatorial $α$-curvature is established, which generalizes Gu-Guo-Luo-Sun-Wu's discrete uniformization theorem for classical combinatorial curvature. We further introduce combinatorial $α$-Yamabe flow and combinatorial $α$-Calabi flow for vertex scaling to find piecewise hyperbolic metrics with prescribed combinatorial $α$-curvatures. To handle…
We prove that a 3--dimensional hyperbolic cusp with convex polyhedral boundary is uniquely determined by its Gauss image. Furthermore, any spherical metric on the torus with cone singularities of negative curvature and all closed contractible geodesics of length greater than $2π$ is the metric of the Gauss image of some convex polyhedral cusp. This result is an analog of the Rivin-Hodgson theorem characterizing compact convex hyperbolic polyhedra in terms of their Gauss images. The proof uses a variational method. Namely, a cusp with a given Gauss image is identified with a critical point of a…
Discrete conformal structure on polyhedral surfaces is a discrete analogue of the smooth conformal structure on surfaces that assigns discrete metrics by scalar functions defined on vertices. In this paper, we introduce combinatorial $α$-curvature for discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces, which is a parameterized generalization of the classical combinatorial curvature. Then we prove the local and global rigidity of combinatorial $α$-curvature with respect to discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces, which confirms parameterized Glickenstein rigidity conjecture. To s…
Let $(M, \partial M)$ be a compact 3-manifold with boundary which admits a complete, convex co-compact hyperbolic metric. For each hyperbolic metric $g$ on $M$ such that $\dr M$ is smooth and strictly convex, the induced metric on $\dr M$ has curvature $K>-1$, and each such metric on $\dr M$ is obtained for a unique choice of $g$. A dual statement is that, for each $g$ as above, the third fundamental form of $\dr M$ has curvature $K<1$, and its closed geodesics which are contractible in $M$ have length $L>2π$. Conversely, any such metric on $\dr M$ is obtained for a unique choice of $g$. We ar…
We show the local rigidity of complex hyperbolic lattices in classical Hermitian semisimple Lie groups, $SU(np,p), Sp(2n+2,\mathbb R), SO^*(2n+2), SO(2n,2)$. This reproves or generalizes some results in \cite{GM, KKP, Klingler-inv, Pozzetti}.
We prove a comparison theorem for certain types of polyhedra in a 3-manifold with its scalar curvature bounded below by $-6$. The result confirms in some cases the Gromov dihedral rigidity conjecture in hyperbolic $3$-space.
In this paper, we adopt combinatorial Ricci curvature flow methods to study the existence of cusped hyperbolic structure on 3-manifolds with torus boundary. For general pseudo 3-manifolds, we prove the long-time existence and the uniqueness for the extended Ricci flow for decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metrics. We prove that the extended Ricci flow converges to a decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metric if and only if there exists a decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metric of zero Ricci curvature. If it is the case, the flow converges exponentially fast. These results apply for cusped hyperbolic …
A Fuchsian polyhedron in hyperbolic space is a polyhedral surface invariant under the action of a Fuchsian group of isometries (i.e. a group of isometries leaving globally invariant a totally geodesic surface, on which it acts cocompactly). The induced metric on a convex Fuchsian polyhedron is isometric to a hyperbolic metric with conical singularities of positive singular curvature on a compact surface of genus greater than one. We prove that these metrics are actually realised by exactly one convex Fuchsian polyhedron (up to global isometries). This extends a famous theorem of A.D. Alexandro…
Given the fundamental group $Γ$ of a finite-volume complete hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$, it is possible to associate to any representation $ρ:Γ\rightarrow \text{Isom}(\mathbb{H}^3)$ a numerical invariant called volume. This invariant is bounded by the hyperbolic volume of $M$ and satisfies a rigidity condition: if the volume of $ρ$ is maximal, then $ρ$ must be conjugated to the holonomy of the hyperbolic structure of $M$. This paper generalizes this rigidity result by showing that if a sequence of representations of $Γ$ into $\text{Isom}(\mathbb{H}^3)$ satisfies $\lim_{n \to \infty} \text{Vol}…
In this note, we study deformations of quaternionic hyperbolic lattices in larger quaternionic hyperbolic spaces and prove local rigidity results. On the other hand, surface groups are shown to be more flexible in quaternionic hyperbolic plane than in complex hyperbolic plane.
We show that any compact orientable hyperbolic 3-cone-manifold with cone angle at most πcan be continuously deformed to a complete hyperbolic manifold homeomorphic to the complement of the singularity. This together with the local rigidity by Hodgson and Kerckhoff implies the global rigidity for compact orientable hyperbolic 3-cone-manifolds under the same angle assumption.
In this survey paper, we outline the proofs of the rigidity results for simple, thick, hyperbolic P-manifolds found in our three earlier papers math.GR/0506518, math.GT/0410476, and math.GR/0409586. We discuss how the arguments change in the two, three, and higher dimensional settings. This paper was written for the 22nd Annual Workshop in Geometric Topology (Colorado Springs, June 2005).
For an $n$-dimensional real hyperbolic manifold $M$, we calculate the Zariski tangent space of a character variety $χ(π_1(M),SL(n+1,\mathbb R)), n>2$ at Fuchisan loci to show that the tangent space consists of cubic forms. Furthermore we prove the Weil's local rigidity theorem for uniforml hyperbolic lattices using real projective structures.
A rigidity result for weakly asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with lower bounds on Ricci curvature is proved without assuming that the manifolds are spin. The argument makes use of a quasi-local mass characterization of Euclidean balls from \cite{Miao} \cite{S_T} and eigenfunction compactification ideas from \cite{Qing}.
For 3-dimensional hyperbolic cone structures with cone angles $θ$, local rigidity is known for $0 \leq θ\leq 2π$, but global rigidity is known only for $0 \leq θ\leq π$. The proof of the global rigidity by Kojima is based on the fact that hyperbolic cone structures with cone angles at most $π$ do not degenerate in deformations decreasing cone angles to zero. In this paper, we give an example of a degeneration of hyperbolic cone structures with decreasing cone angles less than $2π$. These cone structures are constructed on a certain alternating link in the thickened torus by gluing four copies …
The deformation theory of hyperbolic and Euclidean cone-manifolds with all cone angles less then 2π plays an important role in many problems in low dimensional topology and in the geometrization of 3-manifolds. Furthermore, various old conjectures dating back to Stoker about the moduli of convex hyperbolic and Euclidean polyhedra can be reduced to the study of deformations of cone-manifolds by doubling a polyhedron across its faces. This deformation theory has been understood by Hodgson and Kerckhoff when the singular set has no vertices, and by Weiß when the cone angles are less than π. We pr…
When $X=Γ\backslash \H^n$ is a real hyperbolic manifold, it is already known that if the critical exponent is small enough then some cohomology spaces and some spaces of $L^2$ harmonic forms vanish. In this paper, we show rigidity results in the borderline case of these vanishing results.
There are several well-known characterizations of the sphere as a regular surface in the Euclidean space. By means of a purely synthetic technique, we get a rigidity result for the sphere without any curvature conditions, nor completeness or compactness. As well as a dual result for the hyperbolic plane, the spacelike sphere in the Minkowski space.
The rigidity of marked length spectrum for closed hyperbolic surfaces due to Fricke-Klein [7] has been the motivation of many different rigidity results, specially for manifolds of negative curvature. From the works of Vigneras [18], Sunada [17] and many other authors this result is far from being true for the unmarked length spectrum. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a closely a related unmarked spectrum, the length-angle spectrum, and show that it determines the surface uniquely.
We prove that if an $n$-dimensional complete minimal submanifold $M$ in hyperbolic space has sufficiently small total scalar curvature then $M$ has only one end. We also prove that for such $M$ there exist no nontrivial $L^2$ harmonic 1-forms on $M$.
A Riemannian manifold $M$ has higher hyperbolic rank if every geodesic has a perpendicular Jacobi field making sectional curvature -1 with the geodesic. If in addition, the sectional curvatures of $M$ lie in the interval $[-1,-\frac14]$, and $M$ is closed, we show that $M$ is a locally symmetric space of rank one. This partially extends work by Constantine using completely different methods. It is also a partial converse to Hamenstädt's hyperbolic rank rigidity result for sectional curvatures $\leq -1$, and complements well-known results on Euclidean and spherical rank rigidity.
This paper generalizes a rigidity result of complex hyperbolic spaces by M. Herzlich. We prove that an almost Hermitian spin manifold $(M,g)$ of real dimension $4n+2$ which is strongly asymptotic to $\hyp{\C}^{2n+1}$ and satisfies a certain scalar curvature bound must be isometric to the complex hyperbolic space. The fact that we do not assume $g$ to be Kähler reflects in the inequality for the scalar curvature.
We prove the rigidity of positive mass theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. Namely, if the mass equality holds, then the manifold is isometric to hyperbolic space. The result was previously proven for spin manifolds or under special asymptotics.
This paper is a continuation of our paper about boundary rigidity and filling minimality of metrics close to flat ones. We show that compact regions close to a hyperbolic one are boundary distance rigid and strict minimal fillings. We also provide a more invariant view on the approach used in the above mentioned paper.
Let $M$ be a Riemannian manifold with dimension greater or equal to $3$ which admits a complete, finite-volume Riemannian metric $g_0$ locally isometric to a rank-1 symmetric space of non-compact type. The volume entropy rigidity theorem asserts that $g_0$ minimizes a normalized volume growth entropy among all complete, finite-volume, Riemannian metric on $M$. We will repair a gap in the proof when $g_0$ is locally isometric to the Cayley hyperbolic space.
Any Kaehler metric on the ball which is strongly asymptotic to complex hyperbolic space and whose scalar curvature is no less than the one of the complex hyperbolic space must be isometrically biholomorphic to it. This result has been known for some time in odd complex dimension and we provide here a proof in even dimension.
In this paper we establish conditions on the length of the second fundamental form of a complete minimal submanifold $M^n$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+m}$ in order to show that $M^n$ is totally geodesic. We also obtain sharp upper bounds estimates for the first eigenvalue of the super stability operator in the case of $M$ is a surface in $\mathbb{H}^{4}$.
For n>3 we study spaces obtained from finite volume complete real hyperbolic n-manifolds by removing a compact totally geodesic submanifold of codimension two. We prove that their fundamental groups are relative hyperbolic, co-Hopf, biautomatic, residually hyperbolic, not Kähler, not isomorphic to lattices in virtually connected real Lie groups, have no nontrivial subgroups with property (T), have finite outer automorphism groups, satisfy Mostow-type Rigidity, have finite asymptotic dimension and rapid decay property, and satisfy Baum-Connes conjecture. We also characterize those lattices in r…
This paper deals with Hopf type rigidity for convex billiards on surfaces of constant curvature. We prove that the only convex billiard without conjugate points on the Hyperbolic plane or on the Hemisphere is circular billiard.
In this note, we establish the dihedral rigidity phenomenon for a collection of parabolic polyhedrons enclosed by horospheres in hyperbolic manifolds, extending Gromov's comparison theory to metrics with negative scalar curvature lower bounds. Our result is a localization of the positive mass theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We also motivate and formulate some open questions concerning related rigidity phenomenon and convergence of metrics with scalar curvature lower bounds.
Let f:(Y,g)->(X,g_0) be a non zero degree continuous map between compact Kähler manifolds of dimension greater or equal to 2, where g_0 has constant negative holomorphic sectional curvature. Adapting the Besson-Courtois-Gallot barycentre map techniques to the Kähler setting, we prove a gap theorem in terms of the degree of f and the diastatic entropies of (Y, g) and (X,g_0), which extends the rigidity result proved by the author in [13].
Given a closed hyperbolic Riemannian surface, the aim of the present paper is to describe an explicit construction of smooth deformations of the hyperbolic metric into Finsler metrics that are not Riemannian and whose properties are such that the classical Riemannian results about entropy rigidity, marked length spectrum rigidity and boundary rigidity all fail to extend to the Finsler category.
The Witten spinorial argument has been adapted in several works over the years to prove positivity of mass in the asymptotically AdS and asymptotically hyperbolic settings in arbitrary dimensions. In this paper we prove a scalar curvature rigidity result and a positive mass theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds that do not require a spin assumption. The positive mass theorem is reduced to the rigidity case by a deformation construction near the conformal boundary. The proof of the rigidity result is based on a study of minimizers of the BPS brane action.
