3D single-pixel imaging (SPI) is a promising imaging technique that can be ffexibly applied to various wavebands. The main challenge in 3D SPI is that the calibration usually requires a large number of standard points as references, which are tricky to capture using single-pixel detectors. Conventional solutions involve sophisticated device deployment and cumbersome operations, resulting in hundreds of images needed for calibration. In our work, we construct a Calibration Field (CaliF) to efffciently generate the standard points from one single image. A high accuracy of the CaliF is guaranteed by the technique of deep learning and digital twin. We perform experiments with our new method to verify its validity and accuracy. We believe our work holds great potential in 3D SPI systems or even general imaging systems.
Single-pixel imaging is an indirect imaging technique which utilizes simplified optical hardware and advanced computational methods. It offers novel solutions for hyper-spectral imaging, polarimetric imaging, three-dimensional imaging, holographic imaging, optical encryption and imaging through scattering media. The main limitations for its use come from relatively high measurement and reconstruction times. In this paper we propose to reduce the required signal acquisition time by using a novel sampling scheme based on a random selection of Morlet wavelets convolved with white noise. While suc…
Single-pixel imaging (SPI) has a major drawback that many sequential illuminations are required for capturing one single image with long acquisition time. Basis illumination patterns such as Fourier patterns and Hadamard patterns can achieve much better imaging efficiency than random patterns. But the performance is still sub-optimal since the basis patterns are fixed and non-adaptive for varying object images. This Letter proposes a novel scheme for designing and optimizing the illumination patterns adaptively from an image dictionary by extracting the common image features using principal co…

Compressive imaging using coded apertures (CA) is a powerful technique that can be used to recover depth, light fields, hyperspectral images and other quantities from a single snapshot. The performance of compressive imaging systems based on CAs mostly depends on two factors: the properties of the mask's attenuation pattern, that we refer to as "codification" and the computational techniques used to recover the quantity of interest from the coded snapshot. In this work, we introduce the idea of using time-varying CAs synchronized with spatially varying pixel shutters. We divide the exposure of…

There has been an increasing interest in deploying non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging systems for recovering objects behind an obstacle. Existing solutions generally pre-calibrate the system before scanning the hidden objects. Onsite adjustments of the occluder, object and scanning pattern require re-calibration. We present an online calibration technique that directly decouples the acquired transients at onsite scanning into the LOS and hidden components. We use the former to directly (re)calibrate the system upon changes of scene/obstacle configurations, scanning regions, and scanning patterns…
The conventional high-level sensing techniques require high-fidelity images as input to extract target features, which are produced by either complex imaging hardware or high-complexity reconstruction algorithms. In this letter, we propose single-pixel sensing (SPS) that performs high-level sensing directly from coupled measurements of a single-pixel detector, without the conventional image acquisition and reconstruction process. The technique consists of three steps including binary light modulation that can be physically implemented at $\sim$22kHz, single-pixel coupled detection owning wide …
Single-pixel imaging (SPI) is a novel optical imaging technique by replacing a two-dimensional pixelated sensor with a single-pixel detector and pattern illuminations. SPI have been extensively used for various tasks related to image acquisition and processing. In this work, a novel non-image-based task of playing Tic-Tac-Toe games interactively is merged into the framework of SPI. An optoelectronic artificial intelligent (AI) player with minimal digital computation can detect the game states, generate optimal moves and display output results mainly by pattern illumination and single-pixel det…
Single pixel imaging can reconstruct two-dimensional images of a scene with only a single-pixel detector. It has been widely used for imaging in non-visible bandwidth (e.g., near-infrared and X-ray) where focal-plane array sensors are challenging to be manufactured. In this paper, we propose a generative adversarial network based reconstruction algorithm for single pixel imaging, which demonstrates efficient reconstruction in 10ms and higher quality. We verify the proposed method with both synthetic and real-world experiments, and demonstrate a good quality of reconstruction of a real-world pl…

Single-photon light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has been widely applied to 3D imaging in challenging scenarios. However, limited signal photon counts and high noises in the collected data have posed great challenges for predicting the depth image precisely. In this paper, we propose a pixel-wise residual shrinkage network for photon-efficient imaging from high-noise data, which adaptively generates the optimal thresholds for each pixel and denoises the intermediate features by soft thresholding. Besides, redefining the optimization target as pixel-wise classification provides a sharp advanta…
We report a simple single-pixel imaging system with a low mean squared error in the entire terahertz frequency region (3-13 THz) that employs a thin metallic ring with a series of directly perforated random masks and a subpixel mask digitization technique. This imaging system produces high pixel resolution reconstructed images, up to 1200 x 1200 pixels, and imaging area of 32 mm x 32 mm. It can be extended to develop advanced imaging systems in the near-ultraviolet to terahertz region.
Single-pixel imaging (SPI) uses a single-pixel detector to create an image of an object. SPI relies on a computer to construct an image, thus increasing both the size and cost of SPI and limiting its application. We developed instant single-pixel imaging (ISPI), an on-chip SPI system that implements real-time imaging at a rate of 25 fps. ISPI uses the instant ghost imaging algorithm we proposed which leverages signal differences for image creation. It does not require a computer, which greatly reduces its cost and size. The reconstruct time of ISPI for image creation is almost zero because lit…

Two novel visual cryptography (VC) schemes are proposed by combining VC with single-pixel imaging (SPI) for the first time. It is pointed out that the overlapping of visual key images in VC is similar to the superposition of pixel intensities by a single-pixel detector in SPI. In the first scheme, QR-code VC is designed by using opaque sheets instead of transparent sheets. The secret image can be recovered when identical illumination patterns are projected onto multiple visual key images and a single detector is used to record the total light intensities. In the second scheme, the secret image…
We present an adaptation of the pixel-reassignment technique from confocal fluorescent microscopy to coherent ultrasound imaging. The method, Ultrasound Pixel-Reassignment (UPR), provides a resolution and signal to noise (SNR) improvement in ultrasound imaging by computationally reassigning off-focus signals acquired using traditional plane-wave compounding ultrasonography. We theoretically analyze the analogy between the optical and ultrasound implementations of pixel reassignment, and experimentally evaluate the imaging quality on tissue-mimicking acoustic phantoms. We demonstrate that UPR p…
Recent works have shown that deep neural networks can achieve super-human performance in a wide range of image classification tasks in the medical imaging domain. However, these works have primarily focused on classification accuracy, ignoring the important role of uncertainty quantification. Empirically, neural networks are often miscalibrated and overconfident in their predictions. This miscalibration could be problematic in any automatic decision-making system, but we focus on the medical field in which neural network miscalibration has the potential to lead to significant treatment errors.…
The calibration process for the hybrid array pixel detector designed for High Energy Photon Source in China, we called HEPS-BPIX, is presented in this paper. Based on the threshold scanning, the relationship between energy and threshold is quantified for the threshold calibration. For the threshold trimming, the precise algorithm basing on LDAC characteristic and fast algorithm basing on LDAC scanning are proposed in this paper to study the performance of the threshold DACs which will be applied to the pixel. The threshold dispersion has been reduced from 46.28 mV without algorithm to 6.78 mV …
In many previous works, a single-pixel imaging (SPI) system is constructed as an optical image encryption system. Unauthorized users are not able to reconstruct the plaintext image from the ciphertext intensity sequence without knowing the illumination pattern key. However, little cryptanalysis about encrypted SPI has been investigated in the past. In this work, we propose a known-plaintext attack scheme and a ciphertext-only attack scheme to an encrypted SPI system for the first time. The known-plaintext attack is implemented by interchanging the roles of illumination patterns and object imag…
We propose a method of reduction of experimental noise in single-pixel imaging by expressing the subsets of sampling patterns as linear combinations of vertices of a multidimensional regular simplex. This method may be also directly extended to complementary sampling. The modified sampling consists only of non-negative patterns. The measurement becomes theoretically independent of the ambient illumination, and in practice becomes more robust to the varying conditions of the experiment. We show how the optimal dimensionality of the simplex depends on the level of measurement noise. We present e…

Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) is a branch of single-pixel imaging techniques. It uses Fourier basis patterns as structured patterns for spatial information acquisition in the Fourier domain. However, the spatial resolution of the image reconstructed by FSI mainly depends on the number of Fourier coefficients sampled. The reconstruction of a high-resolution image typically requires a number of Fourier coefficients to be sampled, and therefore takes a long data acquisition time. Here we propose a new sampling strategy for FSI. It allows FSI to reconstruct a clear and sharp image with a redu…
We present a technique called single-pixel imaging camera based on complementary detection and optimized Bernoulli modulation (CSPI camera), which can significantly reduce the influence of the disturbance light to single-pixel imaging (SPI). The numerical simulation demonstrates that when the probability of the value "1" is P=0.5 for each coded pattern, CSPI camera is disturbance-free is still disturbance-free even if the intensity fluctuation of the disturbance light is much larger than the signal's intensity. The reconstruction results of both SPI and differential SPI are also compared. This…
Polarimetric imaging can provide valuable information about biological samples in a wide range of applications. Detrimental scattering however currently limits the imaging depth of in-vivo imaging to approximately 1 transport mean free path. In this work, single pixel imaging is investigated as a means of reconstructing polarimetric images through scattering media. A theoretical imaging model is presented and the recovery of the spatially resolved Mueller matrix of a hidden test object is demonstrated experimentally for scattering phantoms with thicknesses up to twice the transport mean free p…
The usually reported pixel resolution of single pixel imaging (SPI) varies between $32 \times 32$ and $256 \times 256$ pixels falling far below imaging standards with classical methods. Low resolution results from the trade-off between the acceptable compression ratio, the limited DMD modulation frequency, and reasonable reconstruction time, and has not improved significantly during the decade of intensive research on SPI. In this paper we show that image measurement at the full resolution of the DMD, which lasts only a fraction of a second, is possible for sparse images or in a situation when…
Structured-light three-dimensional (3D) imaging can achieve 3D shape of a stationary object via one or more pixelated array cameras with phase-shifting illumination. In order to extend 3D imaging to moving scenarios, we propose a 3D imaging method with double projection of a single-frame modulated light pattern and a sampling pattern. It can continuously image the moving 3D scene by making multi-pixel detector axial flat brush scan along the motion axis. Utilizing spatial multiplexing for multiple single-pixel imaging, each single-pixel does not need to keep staring at some part of the object,…
We demonstrate experimentally the ability to use a single pixel detector for two-dimensional high-speed and high-resolution x-ray imaging. We image the rotation of a spinning chopper at 100-kHz at spatial resolution of about 15 microns by using the computational ghost imaging approach. The technique we develop can be used for the imaging of high-speed periodic dynamics or periodically stimulated effects with a large field of view and at low dose.
We describe the application of structured imaging with a single pixel camera to imaging through fog. We demonstrate the use of a high-pass filter on the detected bucket signals to suppress the effects of temporal variations of fog density and enable an effective reconstruction of the image. A quantitative analysis and comparison of several high-pass filters are demonstrated for the application. Both computational ghost imaging and compressive sensing techniques were used for image reconstruction and compressive sensing was observed to give a higher reconstructed image quality.
Single-pixel imaging is a novel imaging scheme that has gained popularity due to its huge computational gain and potential for a low-cost alternative to imaging beyond the visible spectrum. The traditional reconstruction methods struggle to produce a clear recovery when one limits the number of illumination patterns from a spatial light modulator. As a remedy, several deep-learning-based solutions have been proposed which lack good generalization ability due to the architectural setup and loss functions. In this paper, we propose a generative adversarial network-based reconstruction framework …
We demonstrate single-pixel imaging in the spectral domain by encoding Fourier probe patterns onto the spectrum of a superluminescent laser diode using a programmable optical filter. As a proof-of-concept, we measure the wavelength-dependent transmission of a Michelson interferometer and a wavelength-division multiplexer. Our results open new perspectives for remote broadband measurements with possible applications in industrial, biological or security applications.
Single-pixel compressive imaging can recover images from a small amount of measurements, offering many benefits especially for the scenes where the array detection is unavailable. However, the widely used random patterns fail to explore internal relations between the patterns and the image reconstruction. Here we propose a single-pixel imaging method based on origami pattern construction with a better imaging quality, but with less uncertainty of the pattern sequence. It can decrease the sampling ratio even to 0.5\%, really realizing super sub-Nyquist sampling. The experimental realization of …
Recently three-dimensional (3D) imaging achieves tremendous success in consumer and industrial manufacturing. However, current 3D imaging methods rarely observe dynamical events happening in a short time interval due to the imaging speed limitation. Here we propose a time-encoded single-pixel 3D (TESP-3D) imaging method based on active infrared imaging with high-speed structured illumination, which can acquire the 3D information of dynamic events at an ultra-high frame rate. This method uses single-pixel photodetectors instead of conventional CCD or CMOS devices as the imaging sensors to overc…
In previous single-pixel imaging systems, the light source was generally idle with respect to time. Here, we propose a novel image fusion and visible watermarking scheme based on Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSPI) with a multiplexed time-varying (TV) signal, which is generated by the watermark pattern hidden in the light source. We call this scheme as TV-FSPI. With TV-FSPI, we can realize high-quality visible image watermarking, encrypted image watermarking and full-color visible image watermarking. We also discuss the extension to invisible watermarking based on TV-FSPI. Furthermore, we don'…
When imaging moving objects, single-pixel imaging produces motion blur. This paper proposes a new single-pixel imaging method, which can achieve anti-motion blur imaging of a fast-moving object. The geometric moment patterns and Hadamard patterns are used to alternately encode the position information and the image information of the object with time-division multiplexing. In the reconstruction process, the object position information is extracted independently and combining motion-compensation reconstruction algorithm to decouple the object motion from image information. As a result, the anti…
Computational ghost imaging (CGI) and single-pixel camera (SPC) are two types of single-pixel imaging and attracts increasing interest in recent years. The performance differences of CGI and SPC in difference light disturbance environment are investigated. In comparison with CGI, we demonstrate that the quality of SPC is always better in the same conditions and local light disturbance has a larger influence to CGI/SPC than global light disturbance. In addition, a method to improve the reconstruction result of SPC is proposed if the source's energy is unstable and there is light disturbance in …
Single-pixel imaging, with the advantages of a wide spectrum, beyond-visual-field imaging, and robustness to light scattering, has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) can reconstruct sharp images under sub-Nyquist sampling. However, the conventional FSI has difficulty with balancing the imaging quality and efficiency. To overcome this issue, we proposed a novel approach called complementary Fourier single-pixel imaging (CFSI) to reduce measurements while retaining its robustness. The complementary nature of Fourier patterns based on a four-step ph…
Single-pixel imaging (SPI) is an emerging technique which has attracts wide attention in various research fields. However, restricted by the low reconstruction quality and large amount of measurements, the practical application is still in its infancy. Inspired by the fact that natural scenes exhibit unique degenerate structures in the low dimensional subspace, we propose to take advantage of the local prior in convolutional sparse coding to implement high fidelity single-pixel imaging. Specifically, by statistically learning strategy, the target scene can be sparse represented on an overcompl…
Single-pixel imaging is suitable for low light level scenarios because a bucket detector is employed to maximally collect the light from an object. However, one of the challenges is its slow imaging speed, mainly due to the slow light modulation technique. We here demonstrate 1.4MHz video imaging based on computational ghost imaging with a RGB LED array having a full-range frame rate up to 100MHz. With this method, the motion of a high speed propeller is observed. Moreover, by exploiting single-photon detectors to increase the detection efficiency, this method is developed for ultra-high-speed…
Compressive sensing can overcome the Nyquist criterion and record images with a fraction of the usual number of measurements required. However, conventional measurement bases are susceptible to diffraction and scattering, prevalent in high-resolution microscopy. Here, we explore the random Morlet basis as an optimal set for compressive multiphoton imaging, based on its ability to minimise the space-frequency uncertainty. We implement this approach for the newly developed method of wide-field multiphoton microscopy with single-pixel detection (TRAFIX), which allows imaging through turbid media …
Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is important in many applications such as microscopy and crystallography. To quantitatively reveal phase information, people could either employ interference to map phase distribution into intensity fringes, or analyze intensity-only diffraction patterns through phase retrieval algorithms. Traditionally, both of these two ways use pixelated detectors. In this work, a novel QPI scheme is reported inspired by single-pixel camera (SPC), which adopts the principle of SPC that retrieves images through structured illumination and corresponding single-pixel signals. P…
We present a data-driven approach to compensate for optical aberration in calibration-free quantitative phase imaging (QPI). Unlike existing methods that require additional measurements or a background region to correct aberrations, we exploit deep learning techniques to model the physics of aberration in an imaging system. Exposure control is implemented using all-integrated electronics without external optical modulation. This reduces overall system size and power …
With the proliferation of inexpensive CMOS cameras, medical imaging experiences a noticeable influx of new technologies. We discuss several factors (binning, spatial frequency sampling, and distance to the target area) indispensable to getting quantifiable and reproducible results, which are the essence of physiological imaging. We also discussed their implications f…
Under weak illumination, tracking and imaging moving object turns out to be hard. By spatially collecting the signal, single pixel imaging schemes promise the capability of image reconstruction from low photon flux. However, due to the requirement on large number of samplings, how to clearly image moving objects is an essential problem for such schemes. Here we present a principle of single pixel tracking and imaging method. Velocity vector of the object is obtained from temporal correlation of the bucket signals in a typical computational ghost imaging system. Then the illumination beam is st…
Fourier ptychographic microscopy is a computational imaging technique that provides quantitative phase information and high resolution over a large field-of-view. Although the technique presents numerous advantages over conventional microscopy, model mismatch due to unknown optical aberrations can significantly limit reconstruction quality. Many attempts to address this issue rely on embedding pupil recovery into the reconstruction algorithm. In this paper we demonstrate the limitations of a purely algorithmic approach and evaluate the merits of implementing a simple, dedicated calibration pro…
Single-pixel imaging via compressed sensing can reconstruct high-quality images from a few linear random measurements of an object/scene known a priori to be sparse or compressive, by using a point/bucket detector without spatial resolution. Nevertheless, it still faces a harsh trade-off among the acquisition time, the spatial resolution and the signal-to-noise ratio. Here we present a new compressive imaging approach with use of a strategy called cake-cutting which optimally reorders the deterministic Hadamard basis. By this means, the number of measurements can be dramatically reduced by mor…
Fourier ptychography (FP), as a computational imaging method, is a powerful tool to improve imaging resolution. Camera-scanning Fourier ptychography extends the application of FP from micro to macro creatively. Due to the non-ideal scanning of the camera driven by the mechanical translation stage, the pose error of the camera occurs, greatly degrading the reconstruction quality, while a precise translation stage is expensive and not suitable for wide-range imaging. Here, to improve the imaging performance of camera-scanning Fourier ptychography, we propose a pose correction scheme based on cam…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-efficiency single-pixel imaging (SPI) scheme by integrating time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) with time-division multiplexing to acquire full-color images at extremely low light level. This SPI scheme uses a digital micromirror device to modulate a sequence of laser pulses with preset delays to achieve three-color structured illumination, then employs a photomultiplier tube into the TCSPC module to achieve photon-counting detection. By exploiting the time-resolved capabilities of TCSPC, we demodulate the spectrum-image-encoded signa…

A rotating ground glass diffuser is adopted, in preference to a commonly used digital micro-mirror device (DMD), to encode a two-dimensional (2D) image into single-pixel signals. We retrieve images with an 8.8% sampling ratio after the calibration of the pseudo-random pattern of the diffuser under incoherent illumination. Furthermore, we demonstrate hyperspectral imaging with line array detection by adding a diffraction grating. The implementation results in a cost-effective single-pixel camera for high-dimensional ima…
The speed and quality of single-pixel imaging (SPI) are fundamentally limited by image modulation frequency and by the levels of optical noise and compression noise. In an approach to come close to these limits, we introduce a SPI technique, which is inherently differential, and comprises a novel way of measuring the zeroth spatial frequency of images and makes use of varied thresholding of sampling patterns. With the proposed sampling, the entropy of the detection signal is increased in comparison to standard SPI protocols. Image reconstruction is obtained with a single matrix-vector product …
