We present a compact, diffuser-assisted, single-pixel computational camera. A rotating ground glass diffuser is adopted, in preference to a commonly used digital micro-mirror device (DMD), to encode a two-dimensional (2D) image into single-pixel signals. We retrieve images with an 8.8% sampling ratio after the calibration of the pseudo-random pattern of the diffuser under incoherent illumination. Furthermore, we demonstrate hyperspectral imaging with line array detection by adding a diffraction grating. The implementation results in a cost-effective single-pixel camera for high-dimensional imaging, with potential for imaging in non-visible wavebands.

Classification of an object behind a random and unknown scattering medium sets a challenging task for computational imaging and machine vision fields. Recent deep learning-based approaches demonstrated the classification of objects using diffuser-distorted patterns collected by an image sensor. These methods demand relatively large-scale computing using deep neural networks running on digital computers. Here, we present an all-optical processor to directly classify unknown objects through unknown, random phase diffusers using broadband illumination detected with a single pixel. A set of transm…
We demonstrate an approach that allows taking videos at very high-speeds of over 100,000 frames per second (fps) by exploiting the fast sampling rate of the standard rolling-shutter readout mechanism, common to most conventional sensors, and a compressive-sampling acquisition scheme. Our approach is directly applied to a conventional imaging system by the simple addition of a diffuser to the pupil plane, randomly encoding the entire field-of-view to each camera row, while maintaining diffraction-limited resolution. A short video is reconstructed from a single camera frame via a compressed-sens…
Wide field-of-view imaging of fast processes in a microscope requires high light intensities motivating the use of lasers as light sources. However, due to their long spatial coherence length lasers are inappropriate for such applications as they produce coherent noise and parasitic reflections, such as speckle, degrading image quality. Therefore, we provide a step-by-step guide for constructing a speckle-free and high contrast laser illumination setup using a rotating ground glass diffuser driven by a stepper motor. The setup is easy to build, cheap and allows a significant light throughput o…
We present a technique called single-pixel imaging camera based on complementary detection and optimized Bernoulli modulation (CSPI camera), which can significantly reduce the influence of the disturbance light to single-pixel imaging (SPI). The numerical simulation demonstrates that when the probability of the value "1" is P=0.5 for each coded pattern, CSPI camera is disturbance-free is still disturbance-free even if the intensity fluctuation of the disturbance light is much larger than the signal's intensity. The reconstruction results of both SPI and differential SPI are also compared. This…
Computational ghost imaging (CGI) and single-pixel camera (SPC) are two types of single-pixel imaging and attracts increasing interest in recent years. The performance differences of CGI and SPC in difference light disturbance environment are investigated. In comparison with CGI, we demonstrate that the quality of SPC is always better in the same conditions and local light disturbance has a larger influence to CGI/SPC than global light disturbance. In addition, a method to improve the reconstruction result of SPC is proposed if the source's energy is unstable and there is light disturbance in …
Real time, high resolution 3D reconstruction of scenes hidden from the direct field of view is a challenging field of research with applications in real-life situations related e.g. to surveillance, self-driving cars and rescue missions. Most current techniques recover the 3D structure of a non-lineof-sight (NLOS) static scene by detecting the return signal from the hidden object on a scattering observation area. Here, we demonstrate the full colour retrieval of the 3D shape of a hidden scene by coupling back-projection imaging algorithms with the high-resolution time-of-flight information pro…
In a single-pixel camera, an unknown object is sequentially illuminated by intensity patterns. The total reflected or transmitted intensity is summed in a single-pixel detector from which the object is computationally reconstructed. In the situation where the measurements are limited by photon-noise, it is questionable whether a single-pixel camera performs better or worse than simply scanning the object with a focused intensity spot - a modality known as \textit{point raster scanning} and employed in many laser scanning systems. Here, we solve this general question and report that positive in…
We demonstrate a scalable readout scheme for an infrared single-photon pulse-position camera consisting of WSi superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs). For an N x N array, only 2 x N wires are required to obtain the position of a detection event. As a proof-of-principle, we show results from a 2 x 2 array.
We present a workbench for the study of real-time quantum imaging by measuring the frame-by-frame quantum noise reduction of multi-spatial-mode twin beams generated by four wave mixing in Rb vapor. Exploiting the multiple spatial modes of this squeezed light source, we utilize spatial light modulators to selectively pass macropixels of quantum correlated modes from each of the twin beams to a high quantum efficiency balanced detector. In low-light-level imaging applications, the ability to measure the quantum correlations between individual spatial modes and macropixels of spatial modes with a…
In the first part of the paper, a CAOS line camera is introduced for spectral imaging of one dimensional (1-D) or line targets. The proposed spectral camera uses both a diffraction grating as well as a cylindrical lens optics system to provide line imaging along the line pixels direction of the image axis and Fourier transforming operations in the orthogonal direction to provide line pixels optical spectrum analysis. The imager incorporates the Digital Micro-mirror Device (DMD)-based Coded Access Optical Sensor (CAOS) structure. The design includes a line-by-line scan option to enable two dime…
One challenge that has long held the attention of scientists is that of clearly seeing objects hidden by turbid media, as smoke, fog or biological tissue, which has major implications in fields such as remote sensing or early diagnosis of diseases. Here, we combine structured incoherent illumination and bucket detection for imaging an object completely embedded in a turbid medium. A sequence of low-intensity microstructured light patterns is launched onto the object, whose image is accurately reconstructed through the light fluctuations measured by a single-pixel detector. Our technique is non…
We have designed a single-pixel camera with imaging around corners based on computational ghost imaging. It can obtain the image of an object when the camera cannot look at the object directly. Our imaging system explores the fact that a bucket detector in a ghost imaging setup has no spatial resolution capability. A series of experiments have been designed to confirm our predictions. This camera has potential applications for imaging around corner or other similar environments where the object cannot be observed directly.

Photoluminesce (PL) spectroscopy offers excellent methods for mapping the PL decay on the nanosecond time scale. However, capturing maps of emission dynamics on the microsecond time scale can be highly time-consuming. We present a new approach to fluorescence lifetime imaging FLIM, which combines the concept of random temporal speckles excitation (RATS) with the concept of a single-pixel camera based on spatial speckles. The spatio-temporal speckle pattern makes it possible to map PL dynamics with unmatched simplicity. Moreover, the method can acquire all data necessary to map PL decays in the…
Using a random temporal signal for sample excitation (RATS method) is a new, efficient approach to measuring photoluminescence (PL) dynamics. The method can be used in single-point measurement (0D), but also it can be converted to PL decay imaging (2D) using a single-pixel camera configuration. In both cases, the reconstruction of the PL decay and PL snapshot is affected by ubiquitous noise. This article provides a detailed analysis of the noise effect on the RATS method and possible strategies for its elimination. We carried out an extensive set of simulations focusing on the effect of noise …

We propose an original concept of compressive sensing (CS) polarimetric imaging based on a digital micro-mirror (DMD) array and two single-pixel detectors. The polarimetric sensitivity of the proposed setup is due to an experimental imperfection of reflecting mirrors which is exploited here to form an original reconstruction problem, including a CS problem and a source separation task. We show that a two-step approach tackling each problem successively is outperformed by a dedicated combined reconstruction method, which is explicited in this article and preferably implemented through a reweigh…
In this contribution, we explore the imaging limits of terahertz single-pixel cameras and present a way to improve the achievable signal-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution using a technique called dithering masks. The proposed procedure is implemented on the hardware level using recent advances in the development of spatial light modulators for terahertz single-pixel cameras. Thereby, our approach offers new ways to overcome theoretical imaging limits of near wavelength resolution. We suggest that in using dithering masks the required phase retrieval driven recovery can be simplified to a r…
Digital micromirror device (DMD) serves in a significant part of computational optical setups as a means of encoding an image by the desired pattern. The most prominent is its usage in the so-called single-pixel camera experiment. This experiment often requires an efficient and homogenous collection of light from a relatively large chip on a small area of an optical fiber or spectrometer slit. Moreover, this effort is complicated by the fact that the DMD acts as a diffractive element, which causes severe spectral inhomogeneities in the light collection. We studied the effect of light diffracti…

Flying Triangulation sensors enable a free-hand and motion-robust 3D data acquisition of complex shaped objects. The measurement principle is based on a multi-line light-sectioning approach and uses sophisticated algorithms for real-time registration (S. Ettl et al., Appl. Opt. 51 (2012) 281-289). As "single-shot principle", light sectioning enables the option to get surface data from one single camera exposure. But there is a drawback: A pixel-dense measurement is not possible because of fundamental information-theoretical reasons. By "pixel-dense" we understand that each pixel displays indiv…
Since the invention of digital cameras there has been a concerted drive towards detector arrays with higher spatial resolution. Microscanning is a technique that provides a final higher resolution image by combining multiple images of a lower resolution. Each of these low resolution images is subject to a sub-pixel sized lateral displacement. In this work we apply the microscanning approach to an infrared single-pixel camera. For the same final resolution and measurement resource, we show that microscanning improves the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of reconstructed images by approximately 50%. …

Single-pixel cameras based on the concepts of compressed sensing (CS) leverage the inherent structure of images to retrieve them with far fewer measurements and operate efficiently over a significantly broader spectral range than conventional silicon-based cameras. Recently, photonic time-stretch (PTS) technique facilitates the emergence of high-speed single-pixel cameras. A significant breakthrough in imaging speed of single-pixel cameras enables observation of fast dynamic phenomena. However, according to CS theory, image reconstruction is an iterative process that consumes enormous amounts …
The aim of this paper is to discuss some advanced aspects of image reconstruction in single-pixel cameras, focusing in particular on detectors in the THz regime. We discuss the reconstruction problem from a computational imaging perspective and provide a comparison of the effects of several state-of-the art regularization techniques. Moreover, we focus on some advanced aspects arising in practice with THz cameras, which lead to nonlinear reconstruction problems: the calibration of the beam reminiscent of the Retinex problem in imaging and phase recovery problems. Finally we provide an outlook …
We present a wide-field homodyne imaging system capable of recovering intensity and phase images of an object from a single camera frame at an illumination intensity significantly below the noise floor of the camera. By interfering a weak imaging signal with a much brighter reference beam we are able to image objects in the short-wave infrared down to signal intensity of $\sim$$1.1$ photons per pixel per frame incident on the sensor despite the camera having a noise floor of $\sim$$200$ photons per pixel. At this illumination level we operate under the conditions of a reference beam to probe b…
Minimal mutual coherence of discrete noiselets and Haar wavelets makes this pair of bases an essential choice for the measurement and compression matrices in compressed-sensing-based single-pixel detectors. In this paper we propose an efficient way of using complex-valued and non-binary noiselet functions for object sampling in single-pixel cameras with binary spatial light modulators and incoherent illumination. The proposed method allows to determine m complex noiselet coefficients from m+1 binary sampling measurements. Further, we introduce a modification to the complex fast noiselet transf…
