We demonstrate single-pixel imaging in the spectral domain by encoding Fourier probe patterns onto the spectrum of a superluminescent laser diode using a programmable optical filter. As a proof-of-concept, we measure the wavelength-dependent transmission of a Michelson interferometer and a wavelength-division multiplexer. Our results open new perspectives for remote broadband measurements with possible applications in industrial, biological or security applications.
We report a simple single-pixel imaging system with a low mean squared error in the entire terahertz frequency region (3-13 THz) that employs a thin metallic ring with a series of directly perforated random masks and a subpixel mask digitization technique. This imaging system produces high pixel resolution reconstructed images, up to 1200 x 1200 pixels, and imaging area of 32 mm x 32 mm. It can be extended to develop advanced imaging systems in the near-ultraviolet to terahertz region.
Single-pixel imaging (SPI) uses a single-pixel detector to create an image of an object. SPI relies on a computer to construct an image, thus increasing both the size and cost of SPI and limiting its application. We developed instant single-pixel imaging (ISPI), an on-chip SPI system that implements real-time imaging at a rate of 25 fps. ISPI uses the instant ghost imaging algorithm we proposed which leverages signal differences for image creation. It does not require a computer, which greatly reduces its cost and size. The reconstruct time of ISPI for image creation is almost zero because lit…
We present a technique called single-pixel imaging camera based on complementary detection and optimized Bernoulli modulation (CSPI camera), which can significantly reduce the influence of the disturbance light to single-pixel imaging (SPI). The numerical simulation demonstrates that when the probability of the value "1" is P=0.5 for each coded pattern, CSPI camera is disturbance-free is still disturbance-free even if the intensity fluctuation of the disturbance light is much larger than the signal's intensity. The reconstruction results of both SPI and differential SPI are also compared. This…
Polarimetric imaging can provide valuable information about biological samples in a wide range of applications. Detrimental scattering however currently limits the imaging depth of in-vivo imaging to approximately 1 transport mean free path. In this work, single pixel imaging is investigated as a means of reconstructing polarimetric images through scattering media. A theoretical imaging model is presented and the recovery of the spatially resolved Mueller matrix of a hidden test object is demonstrated experimentally for scattering phantoms with thicknesses up to twice the transport mean free p…
Structured-light three-dimensional (3D) imaging can achieve 3D shape of a stationary object via one or more pixelated array cameras with phase-shifting illumination. In order to extend 3D imaging to moving scenarios, we propose a 3D imaging method with double projection of a single-frame modulated light pattern and a sampling pattern. It can continuously image the moving 3D scene by making multi-pixel detector axial flat brush scan along the motion axis. Utilizing spatial multiplexing for multiple single-pixel imaging, each single-pixel does not need to keep staring at some part of the object,…
We demonstrate experimentally the ability to use a single pixel detector for two-dimensional high-speed and high-resolution x-ray imaging. We image the rotation of a spinning chopper at 100-kHz at spatial resolution of about 15 microns by using the computational ghost imaging approach. The technique we develop can be used for the imaging of high-speed periodic dynamics or periodically stimulated effects with a large field of view and at low dose.
We describe the application of structured imaging with a single pixel camera to imaging through fog. We demonstrate the use of a high-pass filter on the detected bucket signals to suppress the effects of temporal variations of fog density and enable an effective reconstruction of the image. A quantitative analysis and comparison of several high-pass filters are demonstrated for the application. Both computational ghost imaging and compressive sensing techniques were used for image reconstruction and compressive sensing was observed to give a higher reconstructed image quality.
Single-pixel compressive imaging can recover images from a small amount of measurements, offering many benefits especially for the scenes where the array detection is unavailable. However, the widely used random patterns fail to explore internal relations between the patterns and the image reconstruction. Here we propose a single-pixel imaging method based on origami pattern construction with a better imaging quality, but with less uncertainty of the pattern sequence. It can decrease the sampling ratio even to 0.5\%, really realizing super sub-Nyquist sampling. The experimental realization of …
Recently three-dimensional (3D) imaging achieves tremendous success in consumer and industrial manufacturing. However, current 3D imaging methods rarely observe dynamical events happening in a short time interval due to the imaging speed limitation. Here we propose a time-encoded single-pixel 3D (TESP-3D) imaging method based on active infrared imaging with high-speed structured illumination, which can acquire the 3D information of dynamic events at an ultra-high frame rate. This method uses single-pixel photodetectors instead of conventional CCD or CMOS devices as the imaging sensors to overc…
In previous single-pixel imaging systems, the light source was generally idle with respect to time. Here, we propose a novel image fusion and visible watermarking scheme based on Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSPI) with a multiplexed time-varying (TV) signal, which is generated by the watermark pattern hidden in the light source. We call this scheme as TV-FSPI. With TV-FSPI, we can realize high-quality visible image watermarking, encrypted image watermarking and full-color visible image watermarking. We also discuss the extension to invisible watermarking based on TV-FSPI. Furthermore, we don'…
When imaging moving objects, single-pixel imaging produces motion blur. This paper proposes a new single-pixel imaging method, which can achieve anti-motion blur imaging of a fast-moving object. The geometric moment patterns and Hadamard patterns are used to alternately encode the position information and the image information of the object with time-division multiplexing. In the reconstruction process, the object position information is extracted independently and combining motion-compensation reconstruction algorithm to decouple the object motion from image information. As a result, the anti…
Single-pixel imaging is an innovative imaging scheme and has received increasing attentions in recent years. It is applicable to imaging at non-visible wavelengths and imaging under low light conditions. However, single-pixel imaging has once encountered problems of low reconstruction quality and long data-acquisition time. This situation has been changed thanks to the developments of Hadamard single-pixel imaging (HSI) and Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI). Both techniques are able to achieve high-quality and efficient imaging, remarkably improving the applicability of single-pixel imaging s…
Computational ghost imaging (CGI) and single-pixel camera (SPC) are two types of single-pixel imaging and attracts increasing interest in recent years. The performance differences of CGI and SPC in difference light disturbance environment are investigated. In comparison with CGI, we demonstrate that the quality of SPC is always better in the same conditions and local light disturbance has a larger influence to CGI/SPC than global light disturbance. In addition, a method to improve the reconstruction result of SPC is proposed if the source's energy is unstable and there is light disturbance in …
Single-pixel imaging, with the advantages of a wide spectrum, beyond-visual-field imaging, and robustness to light scattering, has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) can reconstruct sharp images under sub-Nyquist sampling. However, the conventional FSI has difficulty with balancing the imaging quality and efficiency. To overcome this issue, we proposed a novel approach called complementary Fourier single-pixel imaging (CFSI) to reduce measurements while retaining its robustness. The complementary nature of Fourier patterns based on a four-step ph…
Compressive sensing can overcome the Nyquist criterion and record images with a fraction of the usual number of measurements required. However, conventional measurement bases are susceptible to diffraction and scattering, prevalent in high-resolution microscopy. Here, we explore the random Morlet basis as an optimal set for compressive multiphoton imaging, based on its ability to minimise the space-frequency uncertainty. We implement this approach for the newly developed method of wide-field multiphoton microscopy with single-pixel detection (TRAFIX), which allows imaging through turbid media …
Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is important in many applications such as microscopy and crystallography. To quantitatively reveal phase information, people could either employ interference to map phase distribution into intensity fringes, or analyze intensity-only diffraction patterns through phase retrieval algorithms. Traditionally, both of these two ways use pixelated detectors. In this work, a novel QPI scheme is reported inspired by single-pixel camera (SPC), which adopts the principle of SPC that retrieves images through structured illumination and corresponding single-pixel signals. P…
Under weak illumination, tracking and imaging moving object turns out to be hard. By spatially collecting the signal, single pixel imaging schemes promise the capability of image reconstruction from low photon flux. However, due to the requirement on large number of samplings, how to clearly image moving objects is an essential problem for such schemes. Here we present a principle of single pixel tracking and imaging method. Velocity vector of the object is obtained from temporal correlation of the bucket signals in a typical computational ghost imaging system. Then the illumination beam is st…
We present a novel approach for imaging through scattering media that combines the principles of Fourier spatial filtering and single-pixel imaging. We compare the performance of our single-pixel imaging setup with that of a conventional system. Firstly, we show that a single-pixel camera does not reduce the frequency content of the object, even when a small pinhole is used as a low-pass filter. Second, we show that the introduction of Fourier gating improves the contrast of imaging through scattering media in both optical systems. We conclude that single-pixel imaging fits better than convent…
Single-pixel imaging via compressed sensing can reconstruct high-quality images from a few linear random measurements of an object/scene known a priori to be sparse or compressive, by using a point/bucket detector without spatial resolution. Nevertheless, it still faces a harsh trade-off among the acquisition time, the spatial resolution and the signal-to-noise ratio. Here we present a new compressive imaging approach with use of a strategy called cake-cutting which optimally reorders the deterministic Hadamard basis. By this means, the number of measurements can be dramatically reduced by mor…
Real time, high resolution 3D reconstruction of scenes hidden from the direct field of view is a challenging field of research with applications in real-life situations related e.g. to surveillance, self-driving cars and rescue missions. Most current techniques recover the 3D structure of a non-lineof-sight (NLOS) static scene by detecting the return signal from the hidden object on a scattering observation area. Here, we demonstrate the full colour retrieval of the 3D shape of a hidden scene by coupling back-projection imaging algorithms with the high-resolution time-of-flight information pro…
Complex-field imaging is indispensable for numerous applications at wavelengths from X-ray to THz, with amplitude describing transmittance (or reflectivity) and phase revealing intrinsic structure of the target object. Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) employs iterative phase retrieval algorithms to process diffraction measurements and is the predominant non-interferometric method to image complex fields. However, the working spectrum of CDI is quite narrow, because the diffraction measurements on which it relies require dense array detection with ultra-high dynamic range. Here we report a si…
Image-free tracking methods based on single-pixel detectors (SPDs) can track a moving object at a very high frame rate, but they rarely can achieve simultaneous imaging of such an object. In this study, we propose a method for simultaneously obtaining the relative displacements and images of a translational object. Four binary Fourier patterns and two differential Hadamard patterns are used to modulate one frame of the object and then modulated light signals are obtained by SPD. The relative displacements and image of the moving object can be gradually obtained along with the detection. The pr…
Time-of-flight three dimensional imaging is an important tool for many applications, such as object recognition and remote sensing. Unlike conventional imaging approach using pixelated detector array, single-pixel imaging based on projected patterns, such as Hadamard patterns, utilises an alternative strategy to acquire information with sampling basis. Here we show a modified single-pixel camera using a pulsed illumination source and a high-speed photodiode, capable of reconstructing 128x128 pixel resolution 3D scenes to an accuracy of ~3 mm at a range of ~5 m. Furthermore, we demonstrate cont…
Terahertz (THz) radiation meaning electromagnetic radiation in the range from 0.1 THz (3 mm) to 10 THz (30 mu) has the unique advantage of easily penetrating many obstructions while being non-hazardous to organic tissue since it is non-ionizing. A shortcoming of this domain is the limited availability of high-sensitivity detector arrays respective THz cameras with >1k pixels. To overcome the imaging limitations of the THz domain, compressive imaging in combination with an optically controllable THz spatial light modulator is a promising approach especially when used in a single-pixel imaging m…
In this contribution, we explore the imaging limits of terahertz single-pixel cameras and present a way to improve the achievable signal-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution using a technique called dithering masks. The proposed procedure is implemented on the hardware level using recent advances in the development of spatial light modulators for terahertz single-pixel cameras. Thereby, our approach offers new ways to overcome theoretical imaging limits of near wavelength resolution. We suggest that in using dithering masks the required phase retrieval driven recovery can be simplified to a r…
We have designed a single-pixel camera with imaging around corners based on computational ghost imaging. It can obtain the image of an object when the camera cannot look at the object directly. Our imaging system explores the fact that a bucket detector in a ghost imaging setup has no spatial resolution capability. A series of experiments have been designed to confirm our predictions. This camera has potential applications for imaging around corner or other similar environments where the object cannot be observed directly.
We propose and demonstrate a computational imaging technique that uses structured illumination based on a two-dimensional discrete cosine transform to perform imaging with a single-pixel detector. A scene is illuminated by a projector with two sets of orthogonal patterns, then by applying an inverse cosine transform to the spectra obtained from the single-pixel detector a full-color image is retrieved. This technique can retrieve an image from sub-Nyquist measurements, and the background noise is easily canceled to give excellent image quality. Moreover, the experimental setup is very simple.
Ghost imaging (GI) is an intriguing imaging technology which achieves the object images through intensity correlation between reference patterns and bucket signal. Here, we propose a probability model to explain the imaging mechanism of this modality, by assuming that the reference patterns fulfill an arbitrary identical distribution and that the objects are of gray-scale. We have proven that the probability of the reconstructed pixel values in the pixel region of the same original gray value obeys a Gaussian distribution, no matter which functional form of the reference patterns is used in co…
We combine single-pixel imaging and homodyne detection to perform full object recovery (phase and amplitude). Our method does not require any prior information about the object or the illuminating fields. As a demonstration, we reconstruct the optical properties of several semi-transparent objects and find that the reconstructed complex transmission has a phase precision of 0.02 radians and a relative amplitude precision of 0.01.

Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) is a branch of single-pixel imaging techniques. It uses Fourier basis patterns as structured patterns for spatial information acquisition in the Fourier domain. However, the spatial resolution of the image reconstructed by FSI mainly depends on the number of Fourier coefficients sampled. The reconstruction of a high-resolution image typically requires a number of Fourier coefficients to be sampled, and therefore takes a long data acquisition time. Here we propose a new sampling strategy for FSI. It allows FSI to reconstruct a clear and sharp image with a redu…
A simple and robust experiment demonstrating computational ghost imaging with structured illumination and a single-pixel detector has been performed. Our experimental setup utilizes a general computer for generating pseudo-randomly patterns on the liquid crystal display screen to illuminate a partially-transmissive object. With an incoherent light source, this object is imaged. The effects of light source, light path, and the number of measurements on the reconstruction quality of the object are discussed both theoretically and experimentally. The realization of computational ghost imaging wit…
The usually reported pixel resolution of single pixel imaging (SPI) varies between $32 \times 32$ and $256 \times 256$ pixels falling far below imaging standards with classical methods. Low resolution results from the trade-off between the acceptable compression ratio, the limited DMD modulation frequency, and reasonable reconstruction time, and has not improved significantly during the decade of intensive research on SPI. In this paper we show that image measurement at the full resolution of the DMD, which lasts only a fraction of a second, is possible for sparse images or in a situation when…
In contrast with imaging using position-resolving cameras, single-pixel imaging uses a bucket detector along with spatially structured illumination for image recovery. This emerging imaging technique is a promising candidate for a broad range of applications due to high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and sensitivity, and applicability in a wide range of frequency bands. Here, inspired by single-pixel imaging in the spatial domain, we demonstrate a temporal single-pixel imaging (TSPI) system that covers frequency bands including both terahertz (THz) and near-infrared (NIR) region. By implementing …
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-efficiency single-pixel imaging (SPI) scheme by integrating time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) with time-division multiplexing to acquire full-color images at extremely low light level. This SPI scheme uses a digital micromirror device to modulate a sequence of laser pulses with preset delays to achieve three-color structured illumination, then employs a photomultiplier tube into the TCSPC module to achieve photon-counting detection. By exploiting the time-resolved capabilities of TCSPC, we demodulate the spectrum-image-encoded signa…
We present a compact, diffuser-assisted, single-pixel computational camera. A rotating ground glass diffuser is adopted, in preference to a commonly used digital micro-mirror device (DMD), to encode a two-dimensional (2D) image into single-pixel signals. We retrieve images with an 8.8% sampling ratio after the calibration of the pseudo-random pattern of the diffuser under incoherent illumination. Furthermore, we demonstrate hyperspectral imaging with line array detection by adding a diffraction grating. The implementation results in a cost-effective single-pixel camera for high-dimensional ima…
The speed and quality of single-pixel imaging (SPI) are fundamentally limited by image modulation frequency and by the levels of optical noise and compression noise. In an approach to come close to these limits, we introduce a SPI technique, which is inherently differential, and comprises a novel way of measuring the zeroth spatial frequency of images and makes use of varied thresholding of sampling patterns. With the proposed sampling, the entropy of the detection signal is increased in comparison to standard SPI protocols. Image reconstruction is obtained with a single matrix-vector product …
Single-pixel imaging (SPI) is a novel optical imaging technique by replacing the pixelated sensor array in a conventional camera with a single-pixel detector. In previous works, SPI is usually used for capturing object images or performing image processing tasks. In this work, we propose a SPI scheme for processing other types of data in addition to images. An Ising machine model is implemented optically with SPI for solving combinational optimization problems including number partition and graph maximum cut. Simulated and experimental results show that our proposed scheme can optimize the Ham…
Since the invention of digital cameras there has been a concerted drive towards detector arrays with higher spatial resolution. Microscanning is a technique that provides a final higher resolution image by combining multiple images of a lower resolution. Each of these low resolution images is subject to a sub-pixel sized lateral displacement. In this work we apply the microscanning approach to an infrared single-pixel camera. For the same final resolution and measurement resource, we show that microscanning improves the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of reconstructed images by approximately 50%. …
Time-resolved fluorescence imaging is a key tool in biomedical applications, as it allows to non-invasively obtain functional and structural information. However, the big amount of collected data introduces challenges in both acquisition speed and processing needs. Here, we introduce a novel technique that allows to reconstruct a Giga-voxel 4D hypercube in a fast manner while only measuring 0.03 % of the information. The system combines two single-pixel cameras and a conventional 2D array detector working in parallel. Data fusion techniques are introduced to combine the individual 2D and 3D pr…
Single-pixel imaging, originally developed in light optics, facilitates fast three-dimensional sample reconstruction, as well as probing with light wavelengths undetectable by conventional multi-pixel detectors. However, the spatial resolution of optics-based single-pixel microscopy is limited by diffraction to hundreds of nanometers. Here, we propose an implementation of single-pixel imaging relying on attainable modifications of currently available ultrafast electron microscopes in which optically-modulated electrons are used instead of photons to achieve sub-nanometer spatially- and tempora…

Single pixel imaging (SPI) is a novel technique being able to capture 2D images using a bucket detector with high signal-to-noise ratio, wide spectrum range and low cost. Conventional SPI projects random illumination patterns to randomly and uniformly sample the entire scene's information. Determined by the Nyquist sampling theory, SPI needs either numerous projections or high computation cost to reconstruct the target scene, especially for high-resolution cases. To address this issue, we propose an efficient single pixel imaging technique (eSPI), which instead projects sinusoidal patterns for…
Based on image encoding in a serial-temporal format, optical time-stretch imaging entails a stringent requirement of state-of-the- art fast data acquisition unit in order to preserve high image resolution at an ultrahigh frame rate --- hampering the widespread utilities of such technology. Here, we propose a pixel super-resolution (pixel-SR) technique tailored for time-stretch imaging that preserves pixel resolution at a relaxed sampling rate. It harnesses the subpixel shifts between image frames inherently introduced by asynchronous digital sampling of the continuous time-stretch imaging proc…
We present a workbench for the study of real-time quantum imaging by measuring the frame-by-frame quantum noise reduction of multi-spatial-mode twin beams generated by four wave mixing in Rb vapor. Exploiting the multiple spatial modes of this squeezed light source, we utilize spatial light modulators to selectively pass macropixels of quantum correlated modes from each of the twin beams to a high quantum efficiency balanced detector. In low-light-level imaging applications, the ability to measure the quantum correlations between individual spatial modes and macropixels of spatial modes with a…
We have developed a hyperspectral imaging scheme that involves a combination of dual-comb spectroscopy and Hadamard-transform-based single-pixel imaging. The scheme enables us to obtain 12,000 hyperspectral images of amplitude and phase at a spatial resolution of 46 um without mechanical scanning. The spectral resolution is 20 MHz, as determined by the linewidth of a single comb mode, and the spectral interval is 100 MHz over a spectral range of 1.2 THz centred at 191.5 THz. As an initial demonstration of our scheme, we obtained spectroscopic images of a standard test chart through an etalon p…
