In this work we develop an open quantum system view of the parametric approximation, which allows us to obtain systematic perturbative corrections to it. We consider the Jaynes-Cummings model with dissipation, assuming that the field is in the regime close to the parametric approximation with depletion. We obtain non-unitary corrections to the parametric approximation and additional dynamical Lamb-shift contributions to it. For high detuning, these non-unitary corrections appear to be non-Markovian before depletion. And we show that even after depletion, initial non-Markovian behaviour contributes to the dynamics via laser-induced polishing of the density matrix.
We perform the exact numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonians that describe both degenerate and nondegenerate parametric amplifiers, by exploiting the conservation laws pertaining each device. We clarify the conditions under which the parametric approximation holds, showing that the most relevant requirement is the coherence of the pump after the interaction, rather than its undepletion.
Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is widely used in quantum applications based on photonic entanglement. The efficiency of photon pair generation is often characterized by means of a $sinc(LΔk/2)$-function, where $L$ is the length of the nonlinear medium and $Δk$ the phase mismatch between the pump and down-converted fields. In theoretical investigations, the \textit{sinc} behavior of the phase mismatch has often been approximated by a Gaussian function $\exp{(-αx^2)}$ in order to derive analytical expressions for the SPDC process. Different values have been chosen in the literatur…
We describe a new mechanism of tunneling between period-two vibrational states of a weakly nonlinear parametrically modulated oscillator. The tunneling results from resonant transitions induced by the fast oscillating terms conventionally disregarded in the rotating wave approximation (RWA). The tunneling amplitude displays resonant peaks as a function of the modulation frequency; near the maxima it is exponentially larger than the RWA tunneling amplitude.
We discuss the Bloch-Messiah decomposition for the broadband squeezed light generated by type-I parametric down-conversion with monochromatic pump. Using an exact solution for this process, we evaluate the squeezing parameters and the corresponding squeezing eigenmodes. Next, we consider the Magnus expansion of the quantum-mechanical evolution operator for this process and obtain its first three approximation orders. Using these approximated solutions, we evaluate the corresponding approximations for the Bloch-Messiah decomposition. Our results allow us to conclude that the first-order approxi…
We investigate the multiparticle quantum superposition and the persistence of multipartite entanglement of the quantum superposition generated by the quantum injected high-gain optical parametric amplification of a single photon. The physical configuration based on the optimal universal quantum cloning has been adopted to investigate how the entanglement and the quantum coherence of the system persists for large values of the nonlinear parametric gain g.
The parametric ladder climbing (successive Landau-Zener-type transitions) and the quantum saturation of the threshold for the classical parametric autoresonance due to the zero point fluctuations at low temperatures are discussed. The probability for capture into the chirped parametric resonance is found by solving the Schrodinger equation in the energy basis and the associated resonant phase space dynamics is illustrated via the Wigner distribution. The numerical threshold for the efficient capture into the resonance is compared with the classical and quantum theories in different parameter r…
Open quantum systems can display periodic dynamics at the classical level either due to external periodic modulations or to self-pulsing phenomena typically following a Hopf bifurcation. In both cases, the quantum fluctuations around classical solutions do not reach a quantum-statistical stationary state, which prevents adopting the simple and reliable methods used for stationary quantum systems. Here we put forward a general and efficient method to compute two-time correlations and corresponding spectral densities of time-periodic open quantum systems within the usual linearized (Gaussian) ap…
We study parametric integration of functions from the class C^r([0,1]^{d_1+d_2}) to C([0,1]^{d_1}) in the quantum model of computation. We analyze the convergence rate of parametric integration in this model and show that it is always faster than the optimal deterministic rate and in some cases faster than the rate of optimal randomized classical algorithms.
Using a perturbative approach, we investigate the parametric down-conversion process without the semi-classical approximation. A Wigner functional formalism, which incorporates both the spatiotemproal degrees of freedom and the particle-number degrees of freedom is used to perform the analysis. First, we derive an evolution equation for the down-conversion process in the nonlinear medium. Then we use the perturbative approach to solve the equation. The leading order contribution is equivalent to the semi-classical solution. The next-to-leading order contribution provides a solution that includ…
Glauber coherent states of quantum systems are reviewed. We construct the tomographic probability distributions of the oscillator states. The possibility to describe quantum states by tomographic probability distributions (tomograms) is presented on an example of coherent states of parametric oscillator. The integrals of motion linear in the position and momentum are used to explicitly obtain the tomogram evolution expressed in terms of trajectories of classical parametric oscillator
A parametric amplifier is in essence a linear four-port device, which couples and linearly mixes two inputs before amplifying and sending them to two output ports. Here, we show that for quadrature-phase amplitudes, a parametric amplifier can replace beam splitters to play the role of mixer. We apply this idea to a continuous-variable quantum state teleportation scheme in which a parametric amplifier replaces a beam splitter in Bell measurement. We show that this scheme is loss-tolerant in the Bell measurement process and thus demonstrate the advantage of PA over BS in the applications in quan…
We study the dissipative dynamics of a single quantum harmonic oscillator subjected to a parametric driving with in an effective Hamiltonian approach. Using Liouville von Neumann approach, we show that the time evolution of a parametrically driven dissipative quantum oscillator has a strong connection with the classical damped Mathieu equation. Based on the numerical analysis of the Monodromy matrix, we demonstrate that the dynamical instability generated by the parametric driving are reduced by the effect of dissipation. Further, we obtain a closed relationship between the localization of the…
We propose an optimal protocol using phase-preserving quantum measurements and phase-dependent modulations of the trapping potential at parametric resonance to cool a quantum oscillator to an occupation number of less than one quantum. We derive the optimal phase relationship and duration for the parametric modulations, and compute the lowest-possible occupation number in the steady state. The protocol is robust against moderate amounts of dissipation and phase errors in the feedback loop. Our work has implications for the cooling of levitated mechanical resonators in the quantum regime.
Quantum computers with Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillators (KPOs) have recently been proposed by the author and others. Quantum computation using KPOs is based on quantum adiabatic bifurcations of the KPOs, which lead to quantum superpositions of coherent states, such as Schrodinger cat states. Therefore, these quantum computers are referred to as "quantum bifurcation machines (QbMs)." QbMs can be used for qauntum adiabatic optimization and universal quantum computation. Superconducting circuits with Josephson junctions, Josephson parametric oscillators (JPOs) in particular, are promising fo…
A quantum mechanical version of a classical inverted pendulum is analyzed. The stabilization of the classical motion is reflected in the bounded evolution of the quantum mechanical operators in the Heisenberg picture. Interesting links with the quantum Zeno effect are discussed.
Conventional wisdom suggests that realistic quantum repeaters will require quasi-deterministic sources of entangled photon pairs. In contrast, we here study a quantum repeater architecture that uses simple parametric down-conversion sources, as well as frequency-multiplexed multimode quantum memories and photon-number resolving detectors. We show that this approach can significantly extend quantum communication distances compared to direct transmission. This shows that important trade-offs are possible between the different components of quantum repeater architectures.
We implement experimentally a method to generate photon-number$-$path and polarization entangled photon pairs using ``beamlike'' type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), in which the signal-idler photon pairs are emitted as two separate circular beams with small emission angles rather than as two diverging cones.
Type-II Optical Parametric Oscillators are efficient sources of quadrature squeezed or polarization squeezed light, intensity correlated beams, and entangled light. We review here the different levels of quantum correlations and entanglement that are reached in this device, and present some applications.
Superconducting parametric amplifiers are crucial components in microwave quantum circuits for enabling quantum-limited signal readout. The best-performing such amplifiers are often based on Josephson junctions, which however are sensitive to magnetic fields. Therefore, they require magnetic shields and are not easily integratable with other quantum systems that operates within magnetic fields, such as spin ensemble quantum memories. To tackle this challenge, we have developed a kinetic inductance-based parametric amplifier featuring a NbN nanobridge instead of Josephson Junctions, which provi…
We show how stimulated parametric processes can be employed in experiments on beyond the diffraction limit to overcome the problem of low visibility obtained by using spontaneous down conversion operating in the high gain regime. We further show enhancement of the count rate by several orders when stimulated parametric processes are used. Both the two photon counts and the visibility can be controlled by the phase of the stimulating coherent beam.
We study experimentally the spatial distribution of quantum noise in the twin beams produced by a type II Optical Parametric Oscillator operating in a confocal cavity above threshold. The measured intensity correlations are at the same time below the standard quantum limit and not uniformly distributed inside the beams. We show that this feature is an unambiguous evidence for the multimode and nonclassical character of the quantum state generated by the device.
The new process of quantum-injection into an optical parametric amplifier operating in entangled configuration is adopted to amplify into a large dimensionality spin 1/2 Hilbert space the quantum entanglement and superposition properties of the photon-couples generated by parametric down-conversion. The structure of the Wigner function and of the field's correlation functions shows a decoherence-free, multiphoton Schroedinger-cat behaviour of the emitted field which is largely detectable against the squeezed-vacuum noise. Furthermore, owing to its entanglement character, the system is found to…
We address the problem of efficient modelling of photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion and coupled into single-mode fibers. It is shown that when the range of relevant transverse wave vectors is restricted by the pump and fiber modes, the computational complexity can be reduced substantially with the help of the paraxial approximation, while retaining the full spectral characteristics of the source. This approach can serve as a basis for efficient numerical calculations, or can be combined with analytically tractable approximations of the phase matching function. We …

We discuss physical processes in parametrically driven tunable cavity and outline theoretical foundations for their description. Amplification and frequency conversion are discussed in detail for degenerate and non-degenerate parametric resonance, including quantum noise squeezing and photon entanglement. Experimental advances in this area played decisive role in successful development of quantum limited parametric amplifiers for superconducting quantum information te…
In this letter, we report the observation of the correlation between two modes of microwave radiation resulting from the amplification of quantum noise by the Josephson Parametric Converter. This process, seen from the pump, can be viewed as parametric down-conversion. The correlation is measured by an interference experiment displaying a contrast better than 99% with a number of photons per mode greater than two hundred and fifty thousand. Dispersive measurements of mesoscopic systems and quantum encryption can benefit from this development.
We have built a quantum light source capable of producing different types of quantum states. The quantum light source is based on entangled state preparation in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The single-photon detection rate of eight-hundred thousand per second demonstrates that we have created a bright state-of-the-art quantum light source. As a part of the characterization we measured two-photon quantum interference in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer.
The generation of continuous-variable multipartite entangled states is important for several protocols of quantum information processing and communication, such as one-way quantum computation or controlled dense coding. In this article we theoretically show that multimode optical parametric oscillators can produce a great variety of such states by an appropriate control of the parametric interaction, what we accomplish by tailoring either the spatio-temporal shape of the pump, or the geometry of the nonlinear medium. Specific examples involving currently available optical parametric oscillator…
In the framework of the paraxial and of the slowly varying envelope approximations, with reference to a normally dispersive medium or to vacuum, the electromagnetic field is given as a continuous quantum superposition of non-dispersive and non-diffracting wave-packets (namely X-waves). Entangled states as pairs of elementary excitations traveling at (approximately) the same velocity are found in optical parametric amplification.
Reducing errors is critical to the application of modern quantum computers. In the current Letter, we investigate the quantum error mitigation considering parametric circuits accessible by classical computations in some range of their parameters. We present a method of global randomized error cancellations (GREC) mitigating quantum errors by summing a linear combination of additionally randomized quantum circuits with weights determined by comparison with the referent classically computable data. We illustrate the performance of this method on the example of the $n = 4$ spins anti-ferromagneti…
We propose a scheme for quantum estimation by means of parametric amplification in circuit Quantum Electrodynamics. The modulation of a SQUID interrupting a superconducting waveguide transforms an initial thermal two-mode squeezed state in such a way that the new state is sensitive to the features of the parametric amplifier. We find the optimal initial parameters which maximize the Quantum Fisher Information. In order to achieve a large number of independent measurements we propose to use an array of non-interacting resonators. We show that the combination of both large QFI and large number o…
Quantum cascaded up-conversion (CUpC) of parametric down conversion (PDC) in a finite nonlinear $χ^{(2)}$-crystal is studied theoretically within parametric approximation. The exact solution for creation and annihilation operators presented in the form of Bogoliubov transformation is valid for the high-gain regime and explicitly includes the non-zero wavevector-mismatch both for the PDC and CUpC. With the use of characteristic equation parametric amplification and oscillating regimes are analysed for degenerate, three- and four-mode cases. We show that the parametric amplification exists under…
We identify parametric (radial) Bessel-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic processes as primitive dynamical models of energy level repulsion in irregular quantum systems. Familiar GOE, GUE, GSE and non-Hermitian Ginibre universality classes of spacing distributions arise as special cases in that formalism.
Parametric couplings in engineered quantum systems are a powerful tool to control, manipulate and enhance interactions in a variety of platforms. It allows us to bring systems of different energy scales into communication with each other. This short chapter introduces the basic principles and discusses a few examples of how one can engineer parametric amplifiers with improved characteristics over conventional setups. Clearly, the selected examples are author-biased, and other interesting proposals and implementations can be found in the literature. The focus of this chapter is on parametric ef…
This short and opinionated review starts with a concept of quantum signals at microwave frequencies and focuses on the principle of linear parametric amplification. The amplification process arises from the dispersive nonlinearity of Josephson junctions driven with appropriate tones. We discuss two defining characteristics of these amplifiers: the number of modes receiving the signal, idler and pump waves and the number of independent ports through which these waves enter into the circuit.
We study spectral parametric correlations in quantum chaotic systems and introduce the number covariance as a measure of such correlations. We derive analytic results for the classical random matrix ensembles using the binary correlation method and obtain compact expressions for the co- variance. We illustrate the universality of this measure by presenting the spectral analysis of the quantum kicked rotors for the time-reversal invariant and time-reversal non-invariant cases. A local version of the parametric number variance introduced earlier is also investigated.
Quasi-periodically driven quantum parametric oscillators have been the subject of several recent investigations. Here we show that for such oscillators, the instability zones of the mean position and variance (alternatively the mean energy) for a time developing wave packet are identical for the strongest resonance in the three-dimensional parameter space of the quasi-periodic modulation as it is for the two-dimensional parameter space of the periodic modulations.
Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPAs) approaching quantum-limited noise performance have been instrumental in enabling high fidelity readout of superconducting qubits and, recently, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). We propose that the quantum capacitance arising in electronic two-level systems (the dual of Josephson inductance) can provide an alternative dissipation-less non-linear element for parametric amplification. We experimentally demonstrate phase-sensitive parametric amplification using a QD-reservoir electron transition in a CMOS nanowire split-gate transistor embedded in a 1.8~GHz …
Parametric two-electron reduced-density-matrix (p-2RDM) methods have enjoyed much success in recent years; the methods have been shown to exhibit accuracies greater than coupled cluster with single and double substitutions (CCSD) for both closed- and open-shell ground-state energies, properties, geometric parameters, and harmonic frequencies. The class of methods is herein discussed within the context of the coupled electron pair approximation (CEPA), and several CEPA-like topological factors are presented for use within the p-2RDM framework. The resulting p-2RDM/n methods can be viewed as a d…

The two-parametric quantum superalgebra $U_{p,q}[gl(2/2)]$ and its induced representations are considered. A method for constructing all finite-dimensional irreducible representations of this quantum superalgebra is also described in detail. It turns out that finite-dimensional representations of the two-parametric $U_{p,q}[gl(2/2)]$, even at generic deformation parameters, are not simply trivial deformations from those of the classical superalgebra $gl(2/2)$, unlike the one-parametric cases.
