Quantum cascaded up-conversion (CUpC) of parametric down conversion (PDC) in a finite nonlinear $χ^{(2)}$-crystal is studied theoretically within parametric approximation. The exact solution for creation and annihilation operators presented in the form of Bogoliubov transformation is valid for the high-gain regime and explicitly includes the non-zero wavevector-mismatch both for the PDC and CUpC. With the use of characteristic equation parametric amplification and oscillating regimes are analysed for degenerate, three- and four-mode cases. We show that the parametric amplification exists under the fulfilment of the cascaded phase-matching conditions while both the PDC and CUpC processes are separately non-phase-matched. The influence of CUpC on quadrature squeezing of degenerate PDC is estimated.
Resources for the manipulation and measurements of high-dimensional photonic signals are crucial for implementing qu$d$it-based applications. Here we propose potentially high-performance, chip-compatible devices for such purposes by exploiting quantum-frequency conversion in nonlinear optical media. Specifically, by using sum-frequency generation in a $χ^{(2)}$ waveguide we show how mode-resolved photon counting can be accomplished for telecom-band photonic signals subtending multiple temporal modes. Our method is generally applicable to any nonlinear medium with arbitrary dispersion property.
We study theoretically the cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) in broadband tapered plasmonic nanoantennas and demonstrate a 300-fold increase in nonlinear frequency conversion detected in the main lobe of the nanoantenna far-field pattern. This is achieved by tuning the elements of the nanoantenna to resonate frequencies involved into the FWM interaction. Our findings have a potentially broad application in ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy, sensing, on-chip optical frequency conversion, nonlinear optical metamaterials and photon sources.
We analyze the generation rates and preparation fidelities of photon triplet states in pulsed cascaded parametric down-conversion (PDC) under realistic experimental circumstances. As a model system, we assume a monolithically integrated device with negligible interface loss between the two consecutive PDC stages. We model the secondary down-conversion process in terms of a lossy channel and provide a detailed analysis of noise contributions. Taking variable pump powers into account, we estimate the impact of higher-order photon contributions and conversion processes on the achievable coinciden…
Temporal modes (TM) are a new basis for storage and retrieval of quantum information in states of light. The full TM manipulation toolkit requires a practical quantum pulse gate (QPG), which is a device that unitarily maps any given TM component of the optical input field onto a different, easily separable subspace or degree of freedom. An ideal QPG must "separate" the selected TM component with unit efficiency, whilst avoiding crosstalk from orthogonal TMs. All attempts at implementing QPGs in pulsed-pump traveling-wave systems have been unable to satisfy both conditions simultaneously. This …
We analyze an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) in which cascaded down-conversion occurs inside a cavity resonant for all modes but the initial pump. Due to the resonant cascade design, the OPO present two χ^2 level oscillation thresholds that are therefore remarkably lower than for a χ^3 OPO. This is promising for reaching the regime of an effective third-order nonlinearity well above both thresholds. Such a χ^2 cascaded device also has potential applications in frequency conversion to far infra-red regimes. But, most importantly, it can generate novel multi-partite quantum correlations in …
The appearance of topological singularities, namely exceptional points (EPs) is an intriguing feature of parameter-dependent open quantum or wave systems. EPs are the special type of nonHermitian degeneracies where two (or more) eigenstates of the underlying system coalesce. In this paper, we present a three level non-Hermitian Hamiltonian which hosts three interacting eigenstates. The matrix elements are optimized in such a way that the intermediate eigenstate interacts with both the other states and the underlying system hosts at least two different second order EPs. The impact of quasi-stat…
A new ultra bright pulsed source of polarization entangled photons has been realized using type-II phase matching in spontaneous parametric down conversion process in two cascaded crystals. The optical axes of the crystals are aligned in such a way that the extraordinarily (ordinarily) polarized cone from one crystal overlaps with the ordinarily (extraordinarily) polarized cone from the second crystal. This spatial overlapping removes the association between the polarization and the output angle of the photons that exist in a single type-II down conversion process. Hence, entanglement of photo…
We present a new method for the spectral characterization of pulsed twin beam sources in the high gain regime, using cascaded stimulated emission. We show an implementation of this method for a ppKTP spontaneous parametric down-conversion source generating up to 60 photon pairs per pulse, and demonstrate excellent agreement between our experiments and our theory. This work enables the complete and accurate experimental characterization of high gain effects in parametric down conversion, including self and cross-phase modulation. Moreover, our theory allows the exploration of designs with the g…
Frequency conversion (FC) is an enabling process in many quantum information protocols. Recently, it has been observed that upconversion efficiencies in single-photon, mode-selective FC are limited to around 80%.In this letter we argue that these limits can be understood as time-ordering corrections (TOCs) that modify the joint conversion amplitude of the process. Furthermore we show, using a simple scaling argument, that recently proposed cascaded FC protocols that overcome the aforementioned limitations act as "attenuators" of the TOCs. This observation allows us to argue that very similar c…
In coupled quantum systems pure dephasing mechanisms acting on one constituent of the hybrid system break symmetry and enable optical transitions which are forbidden in the non-coupled system, i.e., the pure dephasing bath opens a cascaded dissipation pathway. Here we show that this mechanism enables single-photon induced parametric down-conversion in an ultrastrongly coupled plasmon-exciton system. Fast pure dephasing of the exciton is shown to support photon pair generation as the dominant energy relaxation pathway.
Deterministic sources of high-fidelity entangled qubit pairs encoded in the dual-rail photonic basis, i.e., presence of a single photon in one of two orthogonal modes, are a key enabling technology of many applications of quantum information processing, including high-rate high-fidelity quantum communications over long distances. The most popular and mature sources of such photonic entanglement, e.g., those that leverage spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) or spontaneous four-wave mixing (sFWM), generate an entangled (so-called, continuous-variable) quantum state that contains contri…
High-speed long-range quantum communication requires combining frequency multiplexed photonic channels with quantum memories. We experimentally demonstrate an integrated quantum frequency conversion protocol that can convert between wavelength division multiplexing channels in the telecom range with an efficiency of $55\pm 8\%$ and a noise subtracted HOM dip visibility of 84.5%. This protocol is based on a cascaded second order nonlinear interaction and can be used to interface a broad spectrum of frequencies with narrowband quantum memories, or alternatively as a quantum optical transponder, …
Non-classical states of light, such as entangled photon pairs and number states, are essential for fundamental tests of quantum mechanics and optical quantum technologies. The most widespread technique for creating these quantum resources is the spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) of laser light into photon pairs. Conservation of energy and momentum in this process, known as phase-matching, gives rise to strong correlations which are used to produce two-photon entanglement in various degrees of freedom. It has been a longstanding goal of the quantum optics community to realise a sour…
We propose and analyse a cascaded optical parametric system which involves three interacting modes across two octaves of frequency difference. Our system, combining degenerate optical parametric oscillation (OPO) with second harmonic generation (SHG), promises to be a useful source of squeezed and entangled light at three differing frequencies. We show how changes in damping rates and the ratio of the two concurrent nonlinearities affect the quantum correlations in the output fields. We analyse the threshold behaviour, showing how the normal OPO threshold is changed by the addition of the SHG …
In this paper, we demonstrate the generation of high-performance entangled photon-pairs in different degrees of freedom from a single piece of fiber pigtailed periodically poled LiNbO$_3$ (PPLN) waveguide. We utilize cascaded second-order nonlinear optical processes, i.e. second-harmonic generation (SHG) and spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), to generate photon-pairs. Previously, the performance of the photon pairs is contaminated by Raman noise photons from the fiber pigtails. Here by integrating the PPLN waveguide with noise rejecting filters, we obtain a coincidence-to-accidenta…
All classical and quantum technologies that encode in and retrieve information from optical fields rely on the ability to selectively manipulate orthogonal field modes of light. Such manipulation can be achieved with high selectivity for polarization modes and transverse-spatial modes. For the time-frequency degree of freedom, this could efficiently be achieved for a limited choice of approximately orthogonal modes, i.e. non-overlapping bins in time or frequency. We recently proposed a method that surmounts the selectivity barrier for sorting arbitrary orthogonal temporal modes [Opt. Lett. {\b…
We propose novel types of parametric oscillators generating both three-photon and four-photon bright light which are accessible for an experiment. The devices are based on the cascaded down-conversion processes and consist of second-order media inserted in two-resonant mode cavity. Discussion of dissipation and quantum features of the system are performed by the quantum-jump simulation method and concerns to the Wigner functions. The phase-space multistabilities and critical threshold behavior of three- and four-photon subharmonics are obtained.
Performances of work-to-work conversion are studied for a dissipative nonlinear quantum system with two isochromatic phase-shifted drives. It is shown that for weak Ohmic damping simultaneous maximization of efficiency with finite power yield and low power fluctuations can be achieved. Optimal performances of these three quantities are accompanied by a shortfall of the trade-off bound recently introduced for classical thermal machines. This bound can be undercut down to zero for sufficiently low temperature and weak dissipation, where the non-Markovian quantum nature dominates. Analytic result…
Long-distance quantum communication relies on storing and retrieving photonic qubits in orthogonal field modes. The available degrees of freedom for photons are polarization, spatial-mode profile, and temporal/spectral profile. To date, methods exist for decomposing, manipulating, and analyzing photons into orthogonal polarization modes and spatial modes. Here we propose and theoretically verify the first highly efficient method to carry out analogous operations for temporally and spectrally overlapping, but field-orthogonal, temporal modes. The method relies on cascaded nonlinear-optical quan…
Efficient sources of many-partite non-classical states are key for the advancement of quantum technologies and for the fundamental testing of quantum mechanics. We demonstrate the generation of time-correlated photon triplets at telecom wavelengths via pulsed cascaded parametric down-conversion in a monolithically integrated source. By detecting the generated states with success probabilities of $(6.25\pm1.09)\times10^{-11}$ per pump pulse at injected powers as low as $10\;μ\mathrm{W}$, we benchmark the efficiency of the complete system and deduce its high potential for scalability. Our source…
Non-classical multi-photon and number states attracts many people because of their wide applications in fundamental quantum mechanics tests, quantum metrology and quantum computation, therefore it is a longstanding aim to generate such states experimentally. Here, we prepare photon triplets by using the spontaneously Raman scattering process in a hot atomic ensemble cascaded by the spontaneous parametric down conversion process in a periodical poled nonlinear waveguide, the strong temporal correlations of these three photons are observed. Our experiment represents the first combination of the …
The heralded generation of entangled states is a long-standing goal in quantum information processing, because it is indispensable for a number of quantum protocols. Polarization entangled photon pairs are usually generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion, but the emission is probabilistic. Their applications are generally accompanied by post-selection and destructive photon detection. Here, we report a source of entanglement generated in an event-ready manner by conditioned detection of auxiliary photons. This scheme benefits from the stable and robust properties of spontaneous…
