Let $m \geq 1$ and consider the product of $m$ independent $n \times n$ matrices $\mathbf{W} = \mathbf{W}_1 \dots \mathbf{W}_m$, each $\mathbf{W}_{i}$ with i.i.d. normalised $\mathcal{N}(0, n^{-1/2})$ entries. It is shown in Penson et al. (2011) that the empirical distribution of the squared singular values of $\mathbf{W}$ converges to a deterministic distribution compactly supported on $[0, u_m]$, where $u_m = \frac{{(m+1)}^{m+1}}{m^m}$. This generalises the well-known case of $m=1$, corresponding to the Marchenko-Pastur distribution for square matrices. Moreover, for $m=1$, it was first shown by Geman (1980) that the largest squared singular value almost surely converges to the right endpoint (the so-called ``soft edge'') of the support, i.e. $s_1^2(\mathbf{W}) \xrightarrow{a.s.} u_1$. Herein, we present a proof for the general case $s_1^2(\mathbf{W}) \xrightarrow{a.s.} u_m$ for $m\geq 1$. Although we do not claim novelty for our result, the proof is simple and does not require familiarity with modern techniques of free probability.
In this paper, we show that the largest and smallest eigenvalues of a sample correlation matrix stemming from $n$ independent observations of a $p$-dimensional time series with iid components converge almost surely to $(1+\sqrtγ)^2$ and $(1-\sqrtγ)^2$, respectively, as $n \to \infty$, if $p/n\to γ\in (0,1]$ and the truncated variance of the entry distribution is 'almost slowly varying', a condition we describe via moment properties of self-normalized sums. Moreover, the empirical spectral distributions of these sample correlation matrices converge weakly, with probability 1, to the Marchenko-P…
Let $M_γ$ be a subcritical Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure associated with a general log-correlated Gaussian field defined on a bounded domain $D \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 1$. We find an explicit formula for its singularity spectrum by showing that $M_γ$ satisfies almost surely the multifractal formalism, i.e., we prove that its singularity spectrum is almost surely equal to the Legendre-Fenchel transform of its $L^q$-spectrum. Then, applying this result, we compute the lower singularity spectrum of the multifractal random walk and of the Liouville Brownian motion.
We derive estimates for the largest and smallest singular values of sparse rectangular $N\times n$ random matrices, assuming $\lim_{N,n\to\infty}\frac nN=y\in(0,1)$. We consider a model with sparsity parameter $p_N$ such that $Np_N\sim \log^{α}N$ for some $α>1$, and assume that the moments of the matrix elements satisfy the condition $\mathbf E|X_{jk}|^{4+δ}\le C<\infty$. We assume also that the entries of matrices we consider are truncated at the level $(Np_N)^{\frac12-\varkappa}$ with $\varkappa:=\fracδ{2(4+δ)}$.
We study largest singular values of large random matrices, each with mean of a fixed rank $K$. Our main result is a limit theorem as the number of rows and columns approach infinity, while their ratio approaches a positive constant. It provides a decomposition of the largest $K$ singular values into the deterministic rate of growth, random centered fluctuations given as explicit linear combinations of the entries of the matrix, and a term negligible in probability. We use this representation to establish asymptotic normality of the largest singular values for random matrices with means that ha…
In this paper, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the edge universality of sample covariance matrices with general population. We consider sample covariance matrices of the form $\mathcal Q = TX(TX)^{*}$, where the sample $X$ is an $M_2\times N$ random matrix with $i.i.d.$ entries with mean zero and variance $N^{-1}$, and $T$ is an $M_1 \times M_2$ deterministic matrix satisfying $T^* T$ is diagonal. We study the asymptotic behavior of the largest eigenvalues of $\mathcal Q$ when $M:=\min\{M_1,M_2\}$ and $N$ tends to infinity with $\lim_{N \to \infty} {N}/{M}=d \in (0, \infty)$.…
This short note presents upper bounds of the expectations of the largest singular values/eigenvalues of various types of random tensors in the non-asymptotic sense. For a standard Gaussian tensor of size $n_1\times\cdots\times n_d$, it is shown that the expectation of its largest singular value is upper bounded by $\sqrt {n_1}+\cdots+\sqrt {n_d}$. For the expectation of the largest $\ell^d$-singular value, it is upper bounded by $2^{\frac{d-1}{2}}\prod_{j=1}^{d}n_j^{\frac{d-2}{2d}}\sum^d_{j=1}n_j^{\frac{1}{2}}$. We also derive the upper bounds of the expectations of the largest Z-/H-($\ell^d$)…
We prove that if $f(n)$ is a Steinhaus or Rademacher random multiplicative function, there almost surely exist arbitrarily large values of $x$ for which $|\sum_{n \leq x} f(n)| \geq \sqrt{x} (\log\log x)^{1/4+o(1)}$. This is the first such bound that grows faster than $\sqrt{x}$, answering a question of Halász and proving a conjecture of Erdős. It is plausible that the exponent $1/4$ is sharp in this problem. The proofs work by establishing a multivariate Gaussian approximation for the sums $\sum_{n \leq x} f(n)$ at a sequence of $x$, conditional on the behaviour of $f(p)$ for all except the l…
The asymptotic behaviour of the distribution of the squared singular values of the sample autocovariance matrix between the past and the future of a high-dimensional complex Gaussian uncorrelated sequence is studied. Using Gaussian tools, it is established the distribution behaves as a deterministic probability measure whose support S is characterized. It is also established that the singular values to the square are almost surely located in a neighbourhood of S.

We establish universality for the largest singular values of products of random matrices with right unitarily invariant distributions, in a regime where the number of matrix factors and size of the matrices tend to infinity simultaneously. The behavior of the largest log singular values coincides with the large N limit of Dyson Brownian motion with a characteristic drift vector consisting of equally spaced coordinates, which matches the large N limit of the largest log singular values of Brownian motion on GL(N, C). Our method utilizes the formalism of multivariate Bessel generating functions,…
We prove the universal asymptotically almost sure non-singularity of general Ginibre and Wigner ensembles of random matrices when the distribution of the entries are independent but not necessarily identically distributed and may depend on the size of the matrix. These models include adjacency matrices of random graphs and also sparse, generalized, universal and banded random matrices. We find universal rates of convergence and precise estimates for the probability of singularity which depend only on the size of the biggest jump of the distribution functions governing the entries of the matrix…

This paper is devoted to the estimation of the minimal dimension P of the state-space realizations of a high-dimensional time series y, defined as a noisy version (the noise is white and Gaussian) of a useful signal with low rank rational spectral density, in the high-dimensional asymptotic regime where the number of available samples N and the dimension of the time series M converge towards infinity at the same rate. In the classical low-dimensional regime, P is estimated as the number of significant singular values of the empirical autocovariance matrix between the past and the future of y, …
The complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble with coupling $τ$ is a complex Gaussian matrix interpolating between the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) and the Ginibre ensemble. It has been known for some time that its eigenvalues form a determinantal point process in the complex plane. A recent result of Kanazawa and Kieburg (arXiv:1804.03985) shows that the singular values form a Pfaffian point process. In this paper we turn to consider an extended elliptic Ginibre ensemble, which connects the GUE and the spiked Wishart matrix, and prove that the singular values still build a Pfaffian point process w…
Relying on random matrix theory (RMT), this paper studies asymmetric order-$d$ spiked tensor models with Gaussian noise. Using the variational definition of the singular vectors and values of (Lim, 2005), we show that the analysis of the considered model boils down to the analysis of an equivalent spiked symmetric \textit{block-wise} random matrix, that is constructed from \textit{contractions} of the studied tensor with the singular vectors associated to its best rank-1 approximation. Our approach allows the exact characterization of the almost sure asymptotic singular value and alignments of…
Given a sequence $(X_n)$ of real or complex random variables and a sequence of numbers $(a_n)$, an interesting problem is to determine the conditions under which the series $\sum_{n=1}^\infty a_n X_n$ is almost surely convergent. This paper extends the classical Menshov--Rademacher theorem on the convergence of orthogonal series to general series of dependent random variables and derives interesting sufficient conditions for the almost everywhere convergence of trigonometric series with respect to singular measures whose Fourier transform decays to 0 at infinity with positive rate.
