We study Dirac fermions in the presence of a space-dependent chiral gauge field and thermodynamic gradients, establishing a connection to the inverse spin Hall effect. The chiral gauge field induces a chiral magnetic field, resulting in a surface Fermi arc state and a chiral Landau level state which, although is delocalized in the bulk, we show to be more robust against impurities. By applying chemical potential and temperature gradients, we achieve nonzero charge currents, with each gradient leading to distinct Fermi level dependencies, both of which have been observed in a recent experiment. Unlike the conventional mixed axial-gravitational anomaly, our currents require a noncollinear chiral magnetic field and thermodynamic gradient. We further derive low-energy transport formulas and demonstrate the importance of carefully treating the ultraviolet cutoff for understanding our lattice calculations.
We derive the topological Chern number of the integer quantum Hall effect in electrical conductivity, using Buot's superfield and lattice Weyl transform nonequilibrium quantum transport formalism. The method is naturally straightforward, appropriate for treating nonequilibrium systems acted on by external electromagnetic fields. We have identified the topological invariant in the effective (~p; ~q; E; t)-phase space via the nonequilibrium quantum transport equation, generally not to first-order in electric field but to first-order in the gradient expansion. We have also derive the Kubo current…
We develop the theoretical framework of nonequilibrium ultrafast photonics in monolayer quantum spin-Hall insulators supporting a multitude of topological states. In these materials, ubiquitous strong light-matter interactions in the femtosecond scale lead to non-adiabatic quantum dynamics, resulting in topology-dependent nonlinear optoelectronic transport phenomena. We investigate the mechanism driving topological Dirac fermions interacting with strong ultrashort light pulses and uncover various experimentally accessible physical quantities that encode fingerprints of the quantum material's t…
Spin Hall effect in infinitely large and finite-size diffusive Rashba two-dimensional electron systems: A helicity-basis nonequilibrium Green's function approach
Silicene have been proposed to host multiple topological phases depending on the environmental parameters such as gated voltage and proximity induced exchange field. Two typical topological phase are quantum spin Hall phase and quantum anomalous Hall phase. We found that in the presence of antiferromagnetic exchange field and (or) gated voltage, the bilayer silicene host a topological phase that the Chern numbers of the two spin are different in both sign and magnitude, .i.e the anomalous Hall effects of the two spins are imbalanced. The topological phase is generated by triple band inversion …
We study the transport properties of a voltage-biased Josephson junction where the BCS superconducting leads are coupled via the edges of a quantum Hall sample. In this scenario, an out of equilibrium Josephson current develops, which is numerically studied within the Floquet-Keldysh Green's function formalism. We particularly focus on the time-averaged current as a function of both the bias voltage and the magnetic flux threading the sample and analyze the resonant multiple Andreev reflection processes that lead to an enhancement of the quasiparticle transmission. We find that a full tomograp…
Much has been learned about the topological transport in real materials. We investigate the interplay between magnetism and topology in the magneto-transport of PrRhC$_2$. The four-fold degeneracy reduces to two-fold followed by non-degenerate Weyl nodes when the orientation of the magnetic quantization axis is changed from easy axis to body-diagonal through face-diagonal. This engenders chirality imbalance between positive and negative chirality Weyl nodes around the Fermi energy. We observe a significant enhancement in the chiral anomaly mediated response such as planar Hall conductivity and…
We extend the semiclassical Boltzmann formalism for the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in nondegenerate multiband electron systems to the spin Hall effect (SHE) and unconventional Edelstein effect (UEE, cannot be accounted for by the conventional Boltzmann equation, unlike the conventional Edelstein effect). This extension is confirmed by extending the Kohn-Luttinger density-matrix transport theory in the weak disorder-potential regime. By performing Kubo linear response calculations in a prototypical multiband model, the Boltzmann scaling for the AHE/SHE and UEE is found to be valid only if the …
We report on an experimental investigation of the combined effect of nonequilibrium quasiparticle injection and supercurrent in superconducting aluminum wires. At low temperature, we observe the supercurrent-induced coupling of energy and charge imbalance with spectral resolution. At high magnetic fields, in the presence of a Zeeman splitting of the density of states, we find evidence for an additional spin-dependent coupling which has been recently predicted theoretically.
A recent scientific debate has arisen: Which processes underlie the actual ground of the valley Hall effect (VHE) in two-dimensional materials? The original VHE emerges in samples with ballistic transport of electrons due to the anomalous velocity terms resulting from the Berry phase effect. In disordered samples though, alternative mechanisms associated with electron scattering off impurities have been suggested: (i) asymmetric electron scattering, called skew scattering, and (ii) a shift of the electron wave packet in real space, called a side jump. It has been claimed that the side jump not…
We give a simple macroscopic phase-space explanation of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), in a fashion reminiscent of the Landau-Ginsburg macroscopic symmetry breaking analyses. This is in contrast to the more complicated microscopic wavefunction approaches. Here, we employ a nonequilibrium quantum transport in the lattice Weyl transform formalism. This is coupled with the Maxwell Chern-Simons gauge theory for defining fractional filling of Landau levels. Flux attachment concept is inherent in fully occupied and as well as in partially occupied Landau levels. We derived the k-factor scali…
We show that the gauge symmetry of the nonequilibrium quantum transport of Chern insulator in a uniform electric field is governed by the Wilson line of parallel transport operator coupled with the dynamical translation operator. This is dictated by the minimal coupling of derivatives with gauge fields in U (1) gauge theory. This parallel transport symmetry consideration leads to the integer quantum Hall effect in electrical conductivity obtained to first-order gradient expansion of the nonequilibrium quantum transport equations.
We find an intervalley wave collective mode in two- and three-dimensional Dirac semimetals in the presence of a valley population imbalance. The dispersion relation of this mode is gapless, proportional to the square of the wave vector at small frequencies, and inversely proportional to the electron-electron exchange interaction energy. The valley wave serves as an energy gain source for the external field, that generates the intervalley transitions. The spin wave analog is discussed for the case of a semimetal with nonequilibrium spin orientation.
It is shown that magnetic forces as the Lorentz force, exerted on electric currents, and the force μDiv(B), exerted on electron spins at rest, account for both the transverse spin imbalance typical of spin Hall effect and the transverse charge imbalance associated with pure spin currents (inverse spin Hall effect). Considering that for stationary currents the laboratory reference frame and those for which the spin up and spin down carriers are at rest are inertial systems, one can easily find the forces exerted by the lattice on both spin sub-bands, as well as the force between sub-bands.
We study the equilibrium and nonequilibrium electronic transport properties of multiprobe topological systems using a combination of the Landauer-Büttiker approach and nonequilibrium Green's functions techniques. We obtain general expressions for both nonequilibrium and equilibrium local electronic currents that, by suitable projections, allow one to compute charge, spin, valley, and orbital currents. We show that external magnetic fields give rise to equilibrium charge currents in mesoscopic system and study the latter in the quantum Hall regime. Likewise, a spin-orbit interaction leads to lo…
We analyze the contribution of the inhomogeneous magnetic field induced by an electrical current to the spin Hall effect in metals. The Zeeman coupling between the field and the electron spin leads to a spin dependent force, and to spin accumulation at the edges. We compare the effect of this relativistic correction to the electron dynamics to the features induced by the spin-orbit interaction. The effect of current induced magnetic fields on the spin Hall effect can be comparable to the extrinsic contribution from the spin-orbit interaction, although it does not require the presence of heavy …
Using particle-based simulations, we examine the collective dynamics of skyrmions interacting with periodic pinning arrays, focusing on the impact of the Magnus force on the sliding phases. As a function of increasing pinning strength, we find a series of distinct dynamical phases, including an interstitial flow phase, a moving disordered state, a moving crystal, and a segregated cluster state. The transitions between these states produce signatures in the skyrmion lattice structure, the skyrmion Hall angle, the velocity fluctuation distributions, and the velocity-force curves. The moving clus…
General nonequilibrium quantum transport equations are derived for a coupled system of charge carriers, Dirac spin, isospin (or valley spin), and pseudospin, such as either one of the band, layer, impurity, and boundary pseudospins. Limiting cases are obtained for one, two or three different kinds of spin ocurring in a system. We show that a characteristic integer number $N_{s}$ determines the formal form of spin quantum transport equations, irrespective of the type of spins or pseudospins, as well as the maximal entanglement entropy. The results may shed a new perspective on the mechanism lea…
General relations for nonequilibrium spin transport at a magnetic junction between a normal metal and a ferromagnetic insulator are derived from the quantum fluctuation theorem. They include the extended Onsager relations between the spin conductance and the spin-current noise that hold for nonequilibrium states driven by an external current. These relations, that are valid for a general setup of spin Hall magnetoresistance, provide a comprehensive viewpoint for understanding of unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance in insulating ferromagnetic junctions.
Since the first experimental observation of the phonon Hall effect (PHE) in 2005, its physical origin and theoretical explanation have been extensively investigated. While spin-orbit interactions are believed to play important roles under external magnetic fields, nonmagnetic effects are also possible. Here, we propose a mechanism of PHE which is induced by electric current in a nonequilibrium system through electron-phonon interactions. The influence of the drift electrons to the phonon degrees of freedom, as a correction to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, is represented by an antisymmetr…
Reconciling Kubo and Keldysh Approaches to Fermi-Sea-Dependent Nonequilibrium Observables: Application to Spin Hall Current and Spin-Orbit Torque in Spintronics
The integer quantum Hall (QH) effects characterized by topologically quantized and nondissipative transport are caused by an electrically insulating incompressible phase that prevents backscattering between chiral metallic channels. We probed the incompressible area susceptible to the breakdown of topological protection using a scanning gate technique incorporating nonequilibrium transport. The obtained pattern revealed the filling-factor ($ν$)-dependent evolution of the microscopic incompressible structures located along the edge and in the bulk region. We found that these specific structures…
Graphene grown epitaxially on SiC, close to the charge neutrality point (CNP), in an orthogonal magnetic field shows an ambipolar behavior of the transverse resistance accompanied by a puzzling longitudinal magnetoresistance. When injecting a transverse current at one end of the Hall bar, a sizeable non local transverse magnetoresistance is measured at low temperature. While Zeeman spin effect seems not to be able to justify these phenomena, some dissipation involving edge states at the boundaries could explain the order of magnitude of the non local transverse magnetoresistance, but not the a…
We present a theory of the photovoltaic valley-dependent Hall effect in a two-dimensional Dirac semiconductor subject to an intense near-resonant electromagnetic field. Our theory captures and elucidates the influence of both the field-induced resonant interband transitions and the nonequilibrium carrier kinetics on the resulting valley Hall transport in terms of photon-dressed quasiparticles. The non-perturbative renormalization effect of the pump field manifests itself in the dynamics of the photon-dressed quasiparticles, with a quasienergy spectrum characterized by {dynamical gaps $δ_η$ ($η…
