It is shown that magnetic forces as the Lorentz force, exerted on electric currents, and the force μDiv(B), exerted on electron spins at rest, account for both the transverse spin imbalance typical of spin Hall effect and the transverse charge imbalance associated with pure spin currents (inverse spin Hall effect). Considering that for stationary currents the laboratory reference frame and those for which the spin up and spin down carriers are at rest are inertial systems, one can easily find the forces exerted by the lattice on both spin sub-bands, as well as the force between sub-bands.
We report on magneto-transport measurements of a two-dimensional electron gas confined in a Cd$_{0.997}$Mn$_{0.003}$Te quantum well structure under conditions of vanishing Zeeman energy. The electron Zeeman energy has been tuned via the $s-d$ exchange interaction in order to probe different quantum Hall states associated with metallic and insulating phases. We have observed that reducing Zeeman energy to zero does not necessary imply the disappearing of quantum Hall states, i.e. a closing of the spin gap. The spin gap value under vanishing Zeeman energy conditions is shown to be dependent on t…
We propose a new approach to generate and detect spin currents in graphene, based on a large spin-Hall response arising near the neutrality point in the presence of external magnetic field. Spin currents result from the imbalance of the Hall resistivity for the spin-up and spin-down carriers induced by Zeeman interaction, and do not involve spin-orbit interaction. Large values of the spin-Hall response achievable in moderate magnetic fields produced by on-chip sources, and up to room temperature, make the effect viable for spintronics applications.
Higher-order topological superconductors and superfluids host lower-dimensional Majorana corner and hinge states since novel topology exhibitions on boundaries. While such topological nontrivial phases have been explored extensively, more possible schemes are necessary for engineering Majorana states. In this paper we propose Majorana corner states could be realized in a two-dimensional attractive quantum spin-Hall insulator with opposite in-plane Zeeman energy at two sublattice sites. The appropriate Zeeman field leads to the opposite Dirac mass for adjacent edges of a square sample, and natu…
We propose a realization of a quantum Hall effect (QHE) in a second-order topological insulator (SOTI) in three dimensions (3D), which is mediated by hinge states on a torus surface. It results from the nontrivial interplay of the material structure, Zeeman effect, and the surface curvature. In contrast to the conventional 2D- and 3D-QHE, we show that the 3D-SOTI QHE is not affected by orbital effects of the applied magnetic field and exists in the presence of a Zeeman term only, induced e.g. by magnetic doping. To explain the 3D-SOTI QHE, we analyze the boundary charge for a 3D-SOTI and estab…
We present a theoretical study of gap opening in the zeroth Landau level in gapped graphene as a result of pseudo-Zeeman interaction. The applied magnetic field couples with the valley pseudospin degree of freedom of the charge carriers leading to the pseudo-Zeeman interaction. To investigate its role in transport at the Charge Neutrality Point (CNP), we study the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) in gapped graphene in an angular magnetic field in the presence of pseudo-Zeeman interaction. Analytical expressions are derived for the Hall conductivity using Kubo-Greenwood formula. We also determ…
In few-layer (FL) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC), the conduction bands along the Gamma-K directions shift downward energetically in the presence of interlayer interactions, forming six Q valleys related by three-fold rotational symmetry and time reversal symmetry. In even-layers the extra inversion symmetry requires all states to be Kramers degenerate, whereas in odd-layers the intrinsic inversion asymmetry dictates the Q valleys to be spin-valley coupled. In this Letter, we report the transport characterization of prominent Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) oscillations for the Q valley electr…
The quantum Hall regime of graphene has many unusual properties. In particular, the presence of a Zeeman field opens up a region of energy within the zeroth Landau level, where the spin-up and spin-down states localized at a single edge propagate in opposite directions. We show that when these edge states are coupled to an s-wave superconductor, the transport of charge carriers is spin-filtered. This spin-filtering effect can be traced back to the interplay of specular Andreev reflections and Andreev retro-reflections in the presence of a Zeeman field.
We demonstrate the existence of robust bulk extended states in the disordered Kane-Mele model with vertical and horizontal Zeeman fields, in the presence of a large Rashba coupling. The phase diagrams are mapped out by using level statistics analysis and computations of the localization length and spin-Chern numbers $C_\pm$. $C_\pm$ are protected by the finite energy and spin mobility gaps. The latter is shown to stay open for arbitrarily large vertical Zeeman fields, or for horizontal Zeeman fields below a critical strength or at moderate disorder. In such cases, a change of $C_\pm$ is necess…
We report a study of the quantum Hall states (QHSs) sequence of holes in mono- and bilayer WSe$_2$. The QHSs sequence transitions between predominantly even and predominantly odd filling factors as the hole density is tuned in the range $1.6 - 12\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. The QHSs sequence is insensitive to the transverse electric field, and tilted magnetic field measurements reveal an insensitivity of the QHSs sequence to the in-plane magnetic field, evincing that the hole spin is locked perpendicular to the WSe$_2$ plane. These observations imply that the QHSs sequence is controlled by the Ze…
We theoretically study the Josephson current in a superconductor/quantum anomalous Hall insulator/superconductor junction by using the lattice Green function technique. When an in-plane external Zeeman field is applied to the quantum anomalous Hall insulator, the Josephson current $J$ flows without a phase difference across the junction $θ$. The phase shift $φ$ appealing in the current-phase relationship $J\propto \sin(θ-φ$) is proportional to the amplitude of Zeeman fields and depends on the direction of Zeeman fields. A phenomenological analysis of the Andreev reflection processes explains t…
We explore several microscopic mechanisms for breaking the $n=0$ fourfold Landau level degeneracy in a single-layer graphene. Valley-scattering random potential, Zeeman interaction, and electron-phonon coupling are considered in the presence of SU(4)-symmetric Coulomb exchange interaction. Among all the mechanisms considered, it is the electron-phonon coupling combined with the Zeeman interaction which leads to the full splitting of the $n=0$ Landau levels. A recent controversy of "valley-first" or "spin-first" breaking of SU(4) symmetry of the $n=0$ graphene Landau level is examined in light …
A general discussion of graphene in external electromagnetic field is provided. In general, the formulation is not Lorentz invariant because of Zeeman energy. But it can be restored approxiamtely in the case of strong magnetic field, the condition when quantum Hall effect is observed. Besides obtaining the well-known Hall conductance $\frac{4q^2}{h}(L+1/2)$, we also predict that the sequence of Hall conductance $\frac{4q^2}{h}L$,which contains the newly observed Hall conductance $\frac{4q^2}{h}L$ for $L=0,1$, depending on the filling of Zeeman levels. The energy levels are obtained for general…
We investigate the topological nodal structure of three-dimensional (3D) ZrTe$_5$ driven by Zeeman splitting as a function of the direction of external magnetic (B) field by using a Wannier-function-based tight-binding (WFTB) model obtained from first-principles calculations. It is known that small external stimuli can drive 3D ZrTe$_5$ into different topological phases including Dirac semimetal. In order to emphasize the effect of Zeeman splitting, we consider 3D ZrTe$_5$ in a strong TI phase with a small band gap. With Zeeman splitting greater than the band gap, the WFTB model suggests that …
The planar Hall effect (PHE) is the appearance of an in-plane transverse voltage in the presence of coplanar electric and magnetic fields. Its hallmark is a characteristic $π$-periodic, i.e. even under a magnetic field reversal, angular dependence with the transverse voltage that exactly vanishes when the electric and magnetic fields are aligned. Here we demonstrate that in two-dimensional trigonal crystals Zeeman-induced non-trivial Berry curvature effects yield a previously unknown anomalous PHE that is odd in the magnetic field and independent of the relative angle with the driving electric…
We derive the diagram of the topological phases accessible within a generic Hamiltonian describing quantum anomalous Hall effect for photons and electrons in honeycomb lattices in presence of a Zeeman field and Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC). The two cases differ crucially by the winding number of their SOC, which is 1 for the Rashba SOC of electrons, and 2 for the photon SOC induced by the energy splitting between the TE and TM modes. As a consequence, the two models exhibit opposite Chern numbers $\pm 2$ at low field. Moreover, the photonic system shows a topological transition absent in the elec…
Quantum Hall ferromagnetic transitions are typically achieved by increasing the Zeeman energy through in-situ sample rotation, while transitions in systems with pseudo-spin indices can be induced by gate control. We report here a gate-controlled quantum Hall ferromagnetic transition between two real spin states in a conventional two-dimensional system without any in-plane magnetic field. We show that the ratio of the Zeeman splitting to the cyclotron gap in a Ge two-dimensional hole system increases with decreasing density owing to inter-carrier interactions. Below a critical density of $\sim2…
We consider DC supercurrents in SNS junctions. Spin-orbit coupling in combination with Zeeman fields can induce an effective vector potential in the normal conductor. As a consequence, an out-of-plane spin-density varying along the transverse direction causes a longitudinal phase difference between the superconducting terminals. The resulting equilibrium phase coherent supercurrent is analogue to the non-equilibrium inverse spin Hall effect in normal conductors. We explicitly compute the effect for the Rashba spin orbit coupling in a disordered two-dimensional electron gas with an inhomogeneou…
Inter-layer excitonic coherence in a quantum Hall bilayer with negligible tunneling is monitored by measurements of low-lying spin excitations. At $ν_T =1$ new quasiparticle excitations are observed above a transition temperature revealing a competing metallic phase. For magnetic fields above an onset Zeeman energy this metallic phase has full spin polarization. A phase diagram in the parameter space of temperature and Zeeman energy reveals that the transition temperature increases at higher fields. This unexpected result suggests intriguing impacts of spin polarization in the highly correlate…
We investigate theoretically the effect of an external magnetic field on polarization patterns appearing in quantum microcavities due to the optical spin Hall effect (OSHE). We show that increase of the magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the cavity resulting in the increase of the Zeeman splitting leads to the transition from azimuthal separation of polarizations to their radial separation. This effect can be straightforwardly detected experimentally.
When time-reversal symmetry is broken, the low-energy description of acoustic lattice dynamics allows for a dissipationless component of the viscosity tensor, the phonon Hall viscosity, which captures how phonon chirality grows with the wavevector. In this work, we show that, in ionic crystals, a phonon Hall viscosity contribution is produced by the Lorentz forces on moving ions. We calculate typical values of the Lorentz force contribution to the Hall viscosity using a simple square lattice toy model, and we compare it with literature estimates of the strengths of other Hall-viscosity mechani…

We demonstrate that the synergistic effect of a gauge field, Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and Zeeman splitting can generate chaotic cyclotron and Hall trajectories of particles. The physical origin of the chaotic behavior is that the SOC produces a spin-dependent (so-called anomalous) contribution to the particle velocity and the presence of Zeeman field reduces the number of integrals of motion. By using analytical and numerical arguments, we study the conditions of chaos emergence and report the dynamics both in the regular and chaotic regimes. {We observe the critical dependence of the…
We study the recently observed graphene fractional quantum Hall state at a filling factor $ν_G=1/3$ using a four-component trial wave function and exact diagonalization calculations. Although it is adiabatically connected to a 1/3 Laughlin state in the upper spin branch, with SU(2) valley-isospin ferromagnetic ordering and a completely filled lower spin branch, it reveals physical properties beyond such a state that is the natural ground state for a large Zeeman effect. Most saliently, it possesses at experimentally relevant values of the Zeeman gap low-energy spin-flip excitations that may be…
The ordinary Hall effect is driven by the Lorentz force, while its anomalous counterpart occurs in ferromagnets. Here we show that the Berry curvature monopole of non-magnetic 2D spin-3/2 holes leads to a novel Hall effect linear in an applied in-plane magnetic field B_x. There is no Lorentz force hence no ordinary Hall effect, while all disorder contributions vanish to leading order in B_x. This intrinsic phenomenon, which we term the anomalous planar Hall effect (APHE), provides a non-quantized footprint of topological transport directly accessible in p-type semiconductors.

We experimentally study the energy gap within the incompressible strip at local filling factor $ν_c=1$ at the quantum Hall edge for samples of very different mobilities. The obtained results indicate strong enhancement of the energy gap in comparison to the single-particle Zeeman splitting. We identify the measured gap as a mobility gap, so a pronounced experimental in-plane magnetic field dependence can both be attributed to the spin effects as well as to the change in the energy levels broadening.
