We study the dynamics of a small solid particle arising from the dewetting of a thin film on a curved substrate driven by capillarity, where mass transport is controlled by surface diffusion. We consider the case when the size of the deposited particle is much smaller than the local radius of curvature of the substrate surface. The application of the Onsager variational principle leads to a reduced-order model for the dynamic behaviour of particles on arbitrarily curved substrates. We demonstrate that particles move toward region of the substrate surface with lower mean curvature with a determined velocity. In particular, the velocity is proportional to the substrate curvature gradient and inversely proportional to the size of the particle, with a coefficient that depends on material properties that include the surface energy, surface diffusivity, density, and Young's (wetting) angle. The reduced model is validated by comparing with numerical results for the full, sharp-interface model in both two and three dimensions.
Comprehensive determination of Burgers vectors of threading dislocations in GaN substrates by combining reflection and transmission synchrotron-radiation x-ray topography
Kinematical and dynamical contrast of dislocations in thick GaN substrates observed by synchrotron-radiation X-ray topography under six-beam diffraction conditions
When stretched in one direction, most solids shrink in the transverse directions. In soft silicone gels, however, we observe that small-scale topographical features grow upon stretching. A quantitative analysis of the topography shows that this counter-intuitive response is nearly linear, allowing us to tackle it through a small-strain analysis. We find that the surprising increase of small-scale topography with stretch is due to a delicate interplay of the bulk and surface responses to strain. Specifically, we find that surface tension changes as the material is deformed. This response is exp…
We propose a direct self-assembly mechanism towards obtaining defect-free perpendicular lamellar phases of diblock copolymer (BCP) thin films. In our numerical study, a thin BCP film having a flat top surface is casted on a uni-directional corrugated solid substrate. The substrate is treated chemically and has a weak preference toward one of the two BCP components. Employing self-consistent field theory (SCFT), we find that there is an enhanced synergy between two substrate characteristics: its topography (geometrical roughness) combined with a weak surface preference. This synergy produces th…

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer observed in women. Communication with the tumor microenvironment allows invading breast cancer cells, such as triple negative breast cancer cells, to adapt to specific substrates. The substrate topography modulates the cellular behavior, among other factors. A number of different materials and micro/nanofabrication techniques have been employed to develop substrates for cell culturing. Silicon-based substrates present a lot of advantages as they are amenable to a wide range of processing techniques and they permit rigorous control over the surfac…
Based on the thermodynamic variation to the free energy functional, we propose a sharp-interface model for simulating solid-state dewetting of thin films on rigid curved substrates in two dimensions. This model describes the interface evolution which occurs through surface diffusion-controlled mass transport and contact point migration along the curved substrate. Furthermore, the surface energy anisotropy is easily included into the model, and the contact point migration is explicitly described by the relaxed contact angle boundary condition. We implement the mathematical model by a semi-impli…
The dewetting dynamics of an ultrathin film is studied in the presence of evaporation - or reaction - of adatoms on the substrate. KMC simulations are in good agreement with an analytical model with diffusion, rim facetting, and substrate sublimation. As sublimation is increased, we find a transition from the usual dewetting regime where the front slows down with time, to a sublimation-controlled regime where the front velocity is approximately constant. The rim width exhibits an unexpected non-monotonous behavior, with a maximum in time.
An approach for thermal conductivity measurements in thin films: Combining localized surface topography, thermal analysis, and machine learning techniques
Self assembled films of organic azobenzene dye chicago sky blue 6B (CSB) have been fabricated onto solid substarte by electrostatic alternate adsorption of polycation ploy(allyl amine hydrochloride) (PAH) and CSB. UV-Vis absorption spectroscopic studies reveal the successful incorporation of CSB molecules into LbL films and consequent formation of aggregates. This view is supported by FTIR spectroscopic studies. Scanning electron microscope picture confirms the formation of nano crystalline aggregates in the LbL films. About 15 minute is required to complete the electrostatic interaction betwe…
The adhesion of a stiff film onto a curved substrate often generates elastic stresses in the film that eventually give rise to its delamination. Here we predict that delamination of very thin films can be dramatically suppressed through tiny, smooth deformations of the substrate, dubbed here "wrinklogami", that barely affect the macroscale topography. This "pro-lamination" effect reflects a surprising capability of smooth wrinkles to suppress compression in elastic films even when spherical or other doubly-curved topography is imposed, in a similar fashion to origami folds that enable construc…
We study the structural and electronic properties of silicene on solid Ar(111) substrate using ab-initio calculations. We demonstrate that due to weak interaction quasi-freestanding silicene is realized in this system. The small binding energy of only $-32$ meV per Si atom also indicates the possibility to separate silicene from the solid Ar(111) substrate. In addition, a band gap of $11$ meV and a significant splitting of the energy levels due to spin-orbit coupling are observed.
We report that a deionized water etching and thermal annealing technique can be effective for preparing atomically-flat and singly-terminated surfaces of single crystalline SrTiO3 substrates. After a two-step thermal-annealing and deionized-water etching procedure, topography measured by atomic force microscopy shows the evolution of substrates from a rough to step-terraced surface structure. Lateral force microscopy confirms that the atomically-flat surfaces are singly-terminated. Moreover, this technique can be used to remove excessive strontium oxide or hydroxide composites segregated on th…
A range of technologies require the directed motion of nanoscale droplets on solid substrates. A way of realizing this effect is durotaxis, whereby a stiffness gradient of a substrate can induce directional motion without requiring an energy source. Here, we report on the results of extensive molecular dynamics investigations of droplets on a surface with varying stiffness. We find that durotaxis is enhanced by increasing the stiffness gradient and, also, by increased wettability of the substrate, in particular, when droplet size decreases. We anticipate that our study will provide further ins…
I present a simple model of the time dependence of the contact area between solid bodies, assuming either a totally uncorrelated surface topography, or a self affine surface roughness. The existence of relaxation effects (that I incorporate using a recently proposed model) produces the time increase of the contact area $A(t)$ towards an asymptotic value that can be much smaller than the nominal contact area. For an uncorrelated surface topography, the time evolution of $A(t)$ is numerically found to be well fitted by expressions of the form [$A(\infty)-A(t)]\sim (t+t_0)^{-q}$, where the expone…
The interfacial structures and interactions of two-dimensional (2D) materials on solid substrates are of fundamental importance for the fabrication and application of 2D materials. However, selection of a suitable solid substrate to grow 2D material, determination and control of the 2D material-substrate interface remain a big challenge due to the large diversity of possible configurations. Here, we propose a computational framework to select an appropriate substrate for epitaxial growth of 2D material and to predict possible 2D material-substrate interface structures and orientations using de…
In this paper, we consider the capillarity-driven evolution of a solid toroidal island on a flat rigid substrate, where mass transport is controlled by surface diffusion. This problem is representative of the geometrical complexity associated with the solid-state dewetting of thin films on substrates. We apply Onsager's variational principle to develop a general approach for describing surface diffusion-controlled problems. Based on this approach, we derive a simple, reduced-order model and obtain an analytical expression for the rate of island shrinking and validate this prediction by numeric…
Micro-solid oxide fuel cells based on thin films have strong potential for use in portable power devices. However, devices based on silicon substrates typically involve thin-film metallic electrodes which are unstable at high temperatures. Devices based on bulk metal substrates overcome these limitations, though performance is hindered by the challenge of growing state-of-the-art epitaxial materials on metals. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the growth of epitaxial cathode materials on metal substrates (stainless steel) commercially supplied with epitaxial electrolyte layers (1.5 {um (…

The Al-Au binary diffusion couple is a classic example of the system exhibiting Kirkendall voiding during interdiffusion. We demonstrate that this effect, which is a major reason for failures of the wire bonds in microelectronics, can be utilized for producing hollow AlAu2 nanoparticles attached to sapphire substrate. To this end, we produced the core-shell Al-Au nanoparticles by performing a solid state dewetting treatment of Al thin film deposited on sapphire substrate, followed by the deposition of thin Au layer on the top of dewetted sample. Annealing of the core-shell nanoparticles in air…
The development of epitaxy techniques for localized growth of crystalline silicon nanofilms and nanostructures has been crucial to recent advances in electronics and photonics. A precise definition of the crystal growth location, however, requires elaborate pre-epitaxy processes for substrate patterning. Our molecular dynamics simulations reveal that homoepitaxial silicon nanofilms can be directly deposited by a crystalline silicon tip rubbing against the substrate, thus enabling geometrically controlled crystal growth with no need for substrate pre-patterning. We name this solid-phase epitaxi…
The development of Si-compatible active photonic devices is a high priority in computer and modern electronics industry. Ge is compatible with Si and is a promising light emission material. Nearly all Ge-on-Si materials reported so far were grown using toxic precursor gases. Here we demonstrate the creation of Ge films on Si substrates through physical vapor deposition of toxin-free solid Ge sources. Structural characterization indicates that a high tensile strain is introduced in the Ge film during the deposition process. We attribute the presence of such a tensile strain to the difference in…
We revisit the indentation of a thin solid sheet of size $R_{sheet}$ suspended on a circular hole of radius $R \ll R_{sheet}$ in a smooth rigid substrate, addressing the effects of boundary conditions at the hole's edge. Introducing a basic theoretical model for the Van-der-Waals (VdW) sheet-substrate attraction, we demonstrate the dramatic effect of replacing the clamping condition (Schwerin model) with a sliding condition, whereby the supported part of the sheet is allowed to slide towards the indenter and relax the induced hoop compression through angstrom-scale deflections from the thermod…
Nucleation of a solid in solid is initiated by the appearance of distinct dynamical heterogeneities, consisting of `active' particles whose trajectories show an abrupt transition from ballistic to diffusive, coincident with the discontinuous transition in microstructure from a {\it twinned martensite} to {\it ferrite}. The active particles exhibit intermittent jamming and flow. The nature of active particle trajectories decides the fate of the transforming solid -- on suppressing single particle diffusion, the transformation proceeds via rare string-like correlated excitations, giving rise to …
Targeting specific technological applications requires the control of nanoparticle properties, especially the crystalline polymorph. Freezing a nanodroplet deposited on a solid substrate leads to the formation of crystalline structures. We study the inherent mechanisms underlying this general phenomenon by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Our work shows that different crystal structures can be selected by finely tuning the solid substrate lattice parameter. Indeed, while for our system, face-centered cubic is usually the most preponderant structure, the growth of two distinct polymorph…
Ice accumulation hinders the performance of, and poses safety threats for infrastructure both on the ground and in the air. Previously, rationally designed superhydrophobic surfaces have demonstrated some potential as a passive means to mitigate ice accretion; however, further studies on material solutions that reduce impalement and contact time for impacting supercooled droplets and can also repel droplets that freeze during surface contact are urgently needed. Here we demonstrate the collaborative effect of substrate flexibility and surface nanotexture on enhancing both icephobicity and the …
A systematic study based on the self-consistent dynamical simulations is presented for the spontaneous evolution of flat solid droplets (bumps), which are driven by the surface drift diffusion induced by the capillary and mismatch stresses, during the development of the Stranski-Krastanow island morphology on a rigid substrate. The physico-mathematical model, which bases on the irreversible thermodynamics treatment of surfaces and interfaces with singularities (Ogurtani, T.O., J. Chem. Phys. 124, 144706, 2006) furnishes us to have auto-control on the otherwise free-motion of the triple junctio…

A systematic study based on the self-consistent dynamical simulations is presented for the spontaneous evolution of an isolated thin solid droplet on a rigid substrate, which is driven by the surface drift diffusion induced by the anisotropic capillary forces (surface stiffness) and mismatch stresses. In this work, we studied the affect of surface free energy anisotropies on the development kinetics of the 'Stranski-Krastanow' island type morphology. The anisotropic surface free energy and the surface stiffness were treated with well accepted trigonometric functions. Although, various tilt ang…
