We study properties of boundary conditions (BCs) in theories with categorical (or non-invertible) symmetries. We describe how the transformation properties, or (generalized) charges, of BCs are captured by topological BCs of Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT), which is a topological field theory in one higher spacetime dimension. As an application of the SymTFT chracterization, we discuss the symmetry properties of boundary conditions for (1+1)d gapped and gapless phases. We provide a number of concrete examples in spacetime dimensions $d=2,3$. We furthermore expand the lattice description for (1+1)d anyon chains with categorical symmetries to include boundary conditions carrying arbitrary 1-charges under the symmetry.
We derive the Symmetry Topological Field Theories (SymTFTs) for 3d supersymmetric quantum field theories (QFTs) constructed in M-theory either via geometric engineering or holography. These 4d SymTFTs encode the symmetry structures of the 3d QFTs, for instance the generalized global symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies. Using differential cohomology, we derive the SymTFT by reducing M-theory on a 7-manifold $Y_7$, which either is the link of a conical Calabi-Yau four-fold or part of an $\text{AdS}_4\times Y_7$ holographic solution. In the holographic setting we first consider the 3d $\mathc…
We construct multi-soliton solutions of the n-component vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the half-line subject to two classes of integrable boundary conditions (BCs): the homogeneous Robin BCs and the mixed Neumann/Dirichlet BCs. The construction is based on the approach of dressing the integrable BCs: soliton solutions are generated in preserving the integrable BCs at each step of the Darboux-dressing process. Under the Robin BCs, examples, including boundary-bound solitons, are explicitly derived; under the mixed Neumann/Dirichlet BCs, the boundary can act as a polarizer that tunes d…

Perturbations of asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spacetimes are often considered by imposing field vanishing boundary conditions (BCs) at the AdS boundary. Such BCs, of Dirichlet-type, imply a vanishing energy flux at the boundary, but the converse is, generically, not true. Regarding AdS as a gravitational box, we consider vanishing energy flux (VEF) BCs as a more fundamental physical requirement and we show that these BCs can lead to a new branch of modes. As a concrete example, we consider Maxwell perturbations on Kerr-AdS black holes in the Teukolsky formalism, but our formulation appl…
Based on the theory of integrable boundary conditions (BCs) developed by Sklyanin, we provide a direct method for computing soliton solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on the half-line. The integrable BCs at the origin are represented by constraints of the Lax pair, and our method lies on dressing the Lax pair by preserving those constraints in the Darboux-dressing process. The method is applied to two classes of solutions: solitons vanishing at infinity and self-modulated solitons on a constant background. Half-line solitons in both cases are explicitly computed. In…

Using Cellular Automata, we simulate spin systems corresponding to $2d$ Ising model with various kinds of boundary conditions (bcs). The appearance of spontaneous magnetization in the absence of magnetic field is studied with a $64\times64$ square lattice with five different bcs, i.e., periodic, adiabatic, reflexive, fixed ($+1$ or $-1$) bcs with three initial conditions (all spins up, all spins down and random orientation of spins). In the context of $2d$ Ising model, we have calculated the magnetisation, energy, specific heat, susceptibility and entropy with each of the bcs and observed that…
In quantum field theories defined on a spacetime with boundaries, the entanglement entropy exhibits subleading, boundary-induced corrections to the ubiquitous area law. At critical points described by conformal field theories (CFTs), and when the entangling surface intersects the physical boundary of the space, new universal terms appear in the entropy and encode valuable information about the boundary CFT. In $2+1$ dimensions, the universal subleading boundary term is logarithmic with coefficient $b(θ)$ depending on the angle $θ$ at which the entangling surface intersects the boundary, as wel…
The spin system of the $2d$ Ising model having a hexagonal-lattice is simulated using non-deterministic Cellular Automata. The method to implement this program is outlined and our results show a good approximation to the exact analytic solution. The phase transition in $2d$ Ising model is studied with a $40\times40$ hexagonal-lattice with five different boundary conditions (bcs) i.e., adiabatic, periodic, reflexive, fixed $+1$ and fixed $-1$ with random orientation of spins as initial conditions in the absence of an external applied magnetic field. The critical temperature below which the spon…
