We consider an inverse problem of recovering a parameter appearing in all levels in a second-order hyperbolic equation from a single boundary measurement. The model is motivated from applications in photoacoustic tomography when one seeks to recover both the wave speed and the initial ultrasound pressure from a single ultrasound signal. In particular, our result shows that the ratio of the initial ultrasound pressure and the wave speed squared uniquely determines both of them respectively.
In thermoacoustic and photoacoustic tomography an electromagnetic wave is sent through a medium, heating it and therefore generating an elastic expansion that in turns generates an acoustic wave that is measured outside the medium. The general problem is to recover both the inhomogeneous sound speed and the initial pressure from the boundary measurements of the solution of the acoustic wave equation with a single measurement of the pressure. We show that one can recover both the sound speed and the initial pressure assuming a monocitiy condition on the sound speed that includes the physically …
This paper is concerned with robust preconditioning of wave equations constrained linear inverse problems from boundary observation data. The main result of this paper is a concept for regularization parameter robust preconditioning. Analogous concepts have been developed for control problems based on elliptic partial equations before.
In this article, we consider the inverse problem of determining spatially heterogeneous absorption and diffusion coefficients from a single measurement of the absorbed energy (in the steady-state diffusion approximation of light transfer). This problem, which is central in quantitative photoacoustic tomography, is in general ill-posed since it admits an infinite number of solution pairs. We show that when the coefficients are known to be piecewise constant functions, a unique solution can be obtained. For the numerical determination of the coefficients, we suggest a variational method based ba…
The attenuation of ultrasound waves in photoacoustic and thermoacoustic imaging presents an important drawback in the applicability of these modalities. This issue has been addressed previously in the applied and theoretical literature, and some advances have been made on the topic. In particular, stability inequalities have been proposed for the inverse problem of initial source recovery with partial observations under the assumption of unique determination of the initial pressure. The main goal of this work is to fill this gap, this is, we prove the uniqueness property for the inverse proble…
We consider the inverse problem of determining the initial states or the source term of a hyperbolic equation damped by some non-local time-fractional derivative. This framework is relevant to medical imaging such as thermoacoustic or photoacoustic tomography. We prove a stability estimate for each of these two problems, with the aid of a Carleman estimate specifically designed for the governing equation.
We prove Hölder type stability estimates near generic simple Riemannian metrics for the inverse problem of recovering such metrics from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the wave equation for the Laplace-Beltrami operator.
Motivated by applications in quantitative photoacoustic imaging, we study inverse problems to a semilinear radiative transport equation (RTE) where we intend to reconstruct absorption coefficients in the equation from single and multiple internal data sets. We derive uniqueness and stability results for the inverse transport problem in the absence of scattering (in which case we also derive some explicit reconstruction methods) and in the presence of known scattering.
In this paper we consider the inverse problem of determining on a compact Riemannian manifold the electric potential and the absorption coefficient in the wave equation with Dirichlet data from measured Neumann boundary observations. This information is enclosed in the dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the wave equation. We prove in dimension $n \geq 2$ that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the wave equation uni
In this paper, we treat the inverse problem of determining two time-dependent coefficients appearing in a dissipative wave equation, from measured Neumann boundary observations. We establish in dimension $n\geq 2$, stability estimates with respect to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of these coefficients provided that are known outside a cloaking regions. Moreover, we prove that it can be stably recovered in larger subsets of the domain by enlarging the set of data
We consider the inverse problem of determining a general nonlinear term appearing in a semilinear hyperbolic equation on a Riemannian manifold with boundary $(M,g)$ of dimension $n=2,3$. We prove results of unique recovery of the nonlinear term $F(t,x,u)$, appearing in the equation $\partial_t^2u-Δ_gu+F(t,x,u)=0$ on $(0,T)\times M$ with $T>0$, from some partial knowledge of the solutions $u$ on the boundary of the time-space cylindrical manifold $(0,T)\times M$ or on the lateral boundary $(0,T)\times\partial M$. We determine the expression $F(t,x,u)$ both on the boundary $x\in\partial M$ and i…
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for the hyperbolic partial differential equation $ (-i\partial_{t} + A_{0}(t,x))^2 u(t,x) - \sum_{j=1}^n (-i\partial_{x_j} + A_{j}(t,x))^2 u(t,x) + V(t,x)u(t,x) = 0 $ with time dependent vector and scalar potentials ($\mathcal{A}= (A_{0},...,A_{m})$ and $V(t,x)$ respectively) on a bounded, smooth cylindric domain $(-\infty,\infty)\timesΩ$. Using a geometric optics construction we show that the boundary data allows us to recover integrals of the potentials along `light rays' and we then establish the uniqueness of these potentials modulo a gauge tra…
We study the stability in the inverse problem of determining the time dependent zeroth-order coefficient $q(t,x)$ arising in the wave equation, from boundary observations. We derive, in dimension $n\geq 2$, a log-type stability estimate in the determination of $q$ from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, in a subset of our domain assuming that it is known outside this subset. Moreover, we prove that we can extend this result to the determination of $q$ in a larger region, and then in the whole domain provided that we have much more data.
We consider the Cauchy problem and the source problem for normally hyperbolic operators on the Minkowski spacetime, and study the determination of solutions from their integrals along null geodesics. For the Cauchy problem, we give a new proof of the stable determination result obtained in Vasy and Wang [12]. For the source problem, we obtain stable determination for sources with space-like singularities. Our proof is based on the microlocal analysis of the normal operator of the light ray transform composed with the parametrix for strictly hyperbolic operators.
In this paper we prove stability estimates of logarithmic type for an inverse problem consisting in the determination of unknown portions of the boundary of a domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, from a knowledge, in a finite time observation, of overdetermined boundary data for initial boundary value problem for anisotropic wave equation.
We study stability aspects for the determination of space and time-dependent lower order perturbations of the wave operator in three space dimensions with point sources. The problems under consideration here are formally determined and we establish Lipschitz stability results for these problems. The main tool in our analysis is a modified version of Bukgheim-Klibanov method based on Carleman estimates.
We study the inverse problem for the second order self-adjoint hyperbolic equation with the boundary data given on a part of the boundary. This paper is the continuation of the author's paper [E]. In [E] we presented the crucial local step of the proof. In this paper we prove the global step. Our method is a modification of the BC-method with some new ideas. In particular, the way of the determination of the metric is new.
We study the inverse problems for the second order hyperbolic equations of general form with time-dependent coefficients assuming that the boundary data are given on a part of the boundary. The main result of this paper is the determination of the time-dependent Lorentzian metric by the boundary measurements. This is achieved by the adaptation of a variant of the Boundary Control method developed by the author in [E1], [E2].
A new method for the Lie group classification of differential equations is proposed. It is based of the determination of all possible cases of linear dependence of certain indeterminate appearing in the determining equations of symmetries of the equation. The method is simple and systematic and applied to a family of hyperbolic equations. Moreover, as the said family contains several known equations with important physical applications, low-order conservation laws of some relevant equations from the family are computed, and the results obtained are discussed with regard to the symmetry integra…
Given $(M,g)$, a compact connected Riemannian manifold of dimension $d \geq 2$, with boundary $\partial M$, we study the inverse boundary value problem of determining a time-dependent potential $q$, appearing in the wave equation $\partial_t^2u-Δ_g u+q(t,x)u=0$ in $\bar M=(0,T)\times M$ with $T>0$. Under suitable geometric assumptions we prove global unique determination of $q\in L^\infty(\bar M)$ given the Cauchy data set on the whole boundary $\partial \bar M$, or on certain subsets of $\partial \bar M$. Our problem can be seen as an analogue of the Calderón problem on the Lorentzian manifol…
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemmanian manifold with non-empty boundary. Consider the second order hyperbolic initial-boundary value problem (δ_t^2 + P(x,D))u = 0 in (0,T) x M, u(0,x) = δ_t u(0,x) = 0 for x in M, u(t,x) = f(t,x) on (0,T) x δM; where P(x,D) is a first-order perturbation of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on (M,g). Let b and q be the covector field and the potential of P(x,D), respectively, in M. We prove Hölder type stability estimates near generic simple Riemannian metrics for the inverse problem of recovering g, b, and q from the hyperbolic Dirichlet-to-Neumann(DN) map associated, f…
In this article we are concerned with an inverse boundary value problem for a non-linear wave equation of divergence form with space dimension $n\geq 3$. In particular the so called the interior determination problem. This non-linear wave equation has a trivial solution, i.e. zero solution. By linearizing this equation at the trivial solution, we have the usual linear isotropic wave equation with the speed $\sqrt{γ(x)}$ at each point $x$ in a given spacial domain. For any small solution $u=u(t,x)$ of this non-linear equation, we have the linear isotropic wave equation perturbed by a divergence…

By linearizing this equation at the trivial solution, we have the usual linear wave equation with a time independent potential. We consider inverse problems for the Einstein equation with a time-depending metric on a 4-dimensional globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$. We formulate the concept of active measurements for relativistic models. We do this by coupling the Einstein equation with equations for scalar fields and study the system $Ein(g)=T$, $T=T(g,ϕ)+F_1$, and $\square_g ϕ=F_2+S(g,ϕ,F_1,F_2)$. Here $F=(F_1,F_2)$ correspond to the perturbations of the physical fields which we control and $S$ is a secondary source corresponding to the adaptation of the system to the perturbation so that the conservatio…
In this paper, we consider an inverse problem for three dimensional viscoelastic fluid flow equations, which arises from the motion of Kelvin-Voigt fluids in bounded domains (a hyperbolic type problem). This inverse problem aims to reconstruct the velocity and kernel of the memory term simultaneously, from the measurement described as the integral over determination condition. By using the contraction mapping principle in an appropriate space, a local in time existence and uniqueness result for the inverse problem of Kelvin-Voigt fluids are obtained. Furthermore, using similar arguments, a glo…
