Existing methods for reconstructing objects and humans from a monocular image suffer from severe mesh collisions and performance limitations for interacting occluding objects. This paper introduces a method to obtain a globally consistent 3D reconstruction of interacting objects and people from a single image. Our contributions include: 1) an optimization framework, featuring a collision loss, tailored to handle human-object and human-human interactions, ensuring spatially coherent scene reconstruction; and 2) a novel technique to robustly estimate 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) poses, specifically for heavily occluded objects, exploiting image inpainting. Notably, our proposed method operates effectively on images from real-world scenarios, without necessitating scene or object-level 3D supervision. Extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluation against existing methods demonstrates a significant reduction in collisions in the final reconstructions of scenes with multiple interacting humans and objects and a more coherent scene reconstruction.

We propose DiffuStereo, a novel system using only sparse cameras (8 in this work) for high-quality 3D human reconstruction. At its core is a novel diffusion-based stereo module, which introduces diffusion models, a type of powerful generative models, into the iterative stereo matching network. To this end, we design a new diffusion kernel and additional stereo constraints to facilitate stereo matching and depth estimation in the network. We further present a multi-level stereo network architecture to handle high-resolution (up to 4k) inputs without requiring unaffordable memory footprint. Give…

We present ARCH++, an image-based method to reconstruct 3D avatars with arbitrary clothing styles. Our reconstructed avatars are animation-ready and highly realistic, in both the visible regions from input views and the unseen regions. While prior work shows great promise of reconstructing animatable clothed humans with various topologies, we observe that there exist fundamental limitations resulting in sub-optimal reconstruction quality. In this paper, we revisit the major steps of image-based avatar reconstruction and address the limitations with ARCH++. First, we introduce an end-to-end poi…
This paper presents an approach for reconstruction of 4D temporally coherent models of complex dynamic scenes. No prior knowledge is required of scene structure or camera calibration allowing reconstruction from multiple moving cameras. Sparse-to-dense temporal correspondence is integrated with joint multi-view segmentation and reconstruction to obtain a complete 4D representation of static and dynamic objects. Temporal coherence is exploited to overcome visual ambiguities resulting in improved reconstruction of complex scenes. Robust joint segmentation and reconstruction of dynamic objects is…
We propose a method for the unsupervised reconstruction of a temporally-coherent sequence of surfaces from a sequence of time-evolving point clouds, yielding dense, semantically meaningful correspondences between all keyframes. We represent the reconstructed surface as an atlas, using a neural network. Using canonical correspondences defined via the atlas, we encourage the reconstruction to be as isometric as possible across frames, leading to semantically-meaningful reconstruction. Through experiments and comparisons, we empirically show that our method achieves results that exceed that state…

Contributions of the work are: An automatic method for initial coarse reconstruction to initialize joint estimation; Sparse-to-dense temporal correspondence int…
Advances in deep learning techniques have allowed recent work to reconstruct the shape of a single object given only one RBG image as input. Building on common encoder-decoder architectures for this task, we propose three extensions: (1) ray-traced skip connections that propagate local 2D information to the output 3D volume in a physically correct manner; (2) a hybrid 3D volume representation that enables building translation equivariant models, while at the same time encoding fine object details without an excessive memory footprint; (3) a reconstruction loss tailored to capture overall objec…
An accurate understanding of omnidirectional environment lighting is crucial for high-quality virtual object rendering in mobile augmented reality (AR). In particular, to support reflective rendering, existing methods have leveraged deep learning models to estimate or have used physical light probes to capture physical lighting, typically represented in the form of an environment map. However, these methods often fail to provide visually coherent details or require additional setups. For example, the commercial framework ARKit uses a convolutional neural network that can generate realistic env…

In this work, we address the problem of multi-person 3D pose estimation from a single image. A typical regression approach in the top-down setting of this problem would first detect all humans and then reconstruct each one of them independently. However, this type of prediction suffers from incoherent results, e.g., interpenetration and inconsistent depth ordering between the people in the scene. Our goal is to train a single network that learns to avoid these problems and generate a coherent 3D reconstruction of all the humans in the scene. To this end, a key design choice is the incorporatio…

We present MeshLeTemp, a powerful method for 3D human pose and mesh reconstruction from a single image. In terms of human body priors encoding, we propose using a learnable template human mesh instead of a constant template as utilized by previous state-of-the-art methods. The proposed learnable template reflects not only vertex-vertex interactions but also the human pose and body shape, being able to adapt to diverse images. We conduct extensive experiments to show the generalizability of our method on unseen scenarios.

It is challenging to directly estimate the human geometry from a single image due to the high diversity and complexity of body shapes with the various clothing styles. Most of model-based approaches are limited to predict the shape and pose of a minimally clothed body with over-smoothing surface. While capturing the fine detailed geometries, the model-free methods are lack of the fixed mesh topology. To address these issues, we propose a novel topology-preserved human reconstruction approach by bridging the gap between model-based and model-free human reconstruction. We present an end-to-end n…
We present PHORHUM, a novel, end-to-end trainable, deep neural network methodology for photorealistic 3D human reconstruction given just a monocular RGB image. Our pixel-aligned method estimates detailed 3D geometry and, for the first time, the unshaded surface color together with the scene illumination. Observing that 3D supervision alone is not sufficient for high fidelity color reconstruction, we introduce patch-based rendering losses that enable reliable color reconstruction on visible parts of the human, and detailed and plausible color estimation for the non-visible parts. Moreover, our …
We propose a scalable neural network framework to reconstruct the 3D mesh of a human body from multi-view images, in the subspace of the SMPL model. Use of multi-view images can significantly reduce the projection ambiguity of the problem, increasing the reconstruction accuracy of the 3D human body under clothing. Our experiments show that this method benefits from the synthetic dataset generated from our pipeline since it has good flexibility of variable control and can provide ground-truth for validation. Our method outperforms existing methods on real-world images, especially on shape estim…

While current volumetric video approaches estimate depth maps using traditional stereo matching techniques, we introduce and optimize deep learning-based multi-view stereo networks for depth map estimation in the context of professional volumetric video reconstruction. Furthermore, we propose a novel depth map post-processing approach including filtering and fusion, by taking into account photometric confidence, cross-view geomet…

Single-image 3D human reconstruction aims to reconstruct the 3D textured surface of the human body given a single image. While implicit function-based methods recently achieved reasonable reconstruction performance, they still bear limitations showing degraded quality in both surface geometry and texture from an unobserved view. In response, to generate a realistic textured surface, we propose ReFu, a coarse-to-fine approach that refines the projected backside view image and fuses the refined image to predict the final human body. To suppress the diffused occupancy that causes noise in project…

We propose CrossHuman, a novel method that learns cross-guidance from parametric human model and multi-frame RGB images to achieve high-quality 3D human reconstruction. To recover geometry details and texture even in invisible regions, we design a reconstruction pipeline combined with tracking-based methods and tracking-free methods. Given a monocular RGB sequence, we track the parametric human model in the whole sequence, the points (voxels) corresponding to the target frame are warped to reference frames by the parametric body motion. Guided by the geometry priors of the parametric body and …
This paper proposes the use of an end-to-end Convolutional Neural Network for direct reconstruction of the 3D geometry of humans via volumetric regression. The proposed method does not require the fitting of a shape model and can be trained to work from a variety of input types, whether it be landmarks, images or segmentation masks. Additionally, non-visible parts, either self-occluded or otherwise, are still reconstructed, which is not the case with depth map regression. We present results that show that our method can handle both pose variation and detailed reconstruction given appropriate d…

Estimating 3D human pose and shape from a single image is highly under-constrained. To address this ambiguity, we propose a novel prior, namely kinematic dictionary, which explicitly regularizes the solution space of relative 3D rotations of human joints in the kinematic tree. Integrated with a statistical human model and a deep neural network, our method achieves end-to-end 3D reconstruction without the need of using any shape annotations during the training of neural networks. The kinematic dictionary bridges the gap between in-the-wild images and 3D datasets, and thus facilitates end-to-end…

We apply a denoising autoencoder to estimate missing landmarks. Then we apply an attention model to estimate body joints from landmarks. Finally, a cascading network is applied to regress parameters of a statistical generative model that reconstructs body. Our set of proposed loss functions allows us to train the network in an unsupervised way. Results on four public datasets show that our approach accurately reconstructs the hu…

We introduce an approach that accurately reconstructs 3D human poses and detailed 3D full-body geometric models from single images in realtime. The key idea of our approach is a novel end-to-end multi-task deep learning framework that uses single images to predict five outputs simultaneously: foreground segmentation mask, 2D joints positions, semantic body partitions, 3D part orientations and uv coordinates (uv map). The multi-task network architecture not only generates more visual cues for reconstruction, but also makes each individual prediction more accurate. The CNN regressor is further c…
We propose a novel 3D human pose detector using two panoramic cameras. We show that transforming fisheye perspectives to rectilinear views allows a direct application of two-dimensional deep-learning pose estimation methods, without the explicit need for a costly re-training step to compensate for fisheye image distortions. By utilizing panoramic cameras, our method is capable of accurately estimating human poses over a large field of view. This renders our method suitable for ergonomic analyses and other pose based assessments.

We introduce TempCLR, a new time-coherent contrastive learning approach for the structured regression task of 3D hand reconstruction. Unlike previous time-contrastive methods for hand pose estimation, our framework considers temporal consistency in its augmentation scheme, and accounts for the differences of hand poses along the temporal direction. Our data-driven method leverages unlabelled videos and a standard CNN, without relying on synthetic data, pseudo-labels, or specialized architectures. Our approach improves the performance of fully-supervised hand reconstruction methods by 15.9% and…
We propose DeepHuman, an image-guided volume-to-volume translation CNN for 3D human reconstruction from a single RGB image. To reduce the ambiguities associated with the surface geometry reconstruction, even for the reconstruction of invisible areas, we propose and leverage a dense semantic representation generated from SMPL model as an additional input. One key feature of our network is that it fuses different scales of image features into the 3D space through volumetric feature transformation, which helps to recover accurate surface geometry. The visible surface details are further refined t…

Traditional methods of reconstructing 3D human pose and mesh from single images rely on paired image-mesh datasets, which can be difficult and expensive to obtain. Due to this limitation, model scalability is constrained as well as reconstruction performance. Towards addressing the challenge, we introduce Mesh Pre-Training (MPT), an effective pre-training strategy that leverages large amounts of MoCap data to effectively perform pre-training at scale. We introduce the use of MoCap-generated heatmaps as input representations to the mesh regression transformer and propose a Masked Heatmap Modeli…

Although PIFu-based 3D human reconstruction methods are popular, the quality of recovered details is still unsatisfactory. In a sparse (e.g., 3 RGBD sensors) capture setting, the depth noise is typically amplified in the PIFu representation, resulting in flat facial surfaces and geometry-fallible bodies. In this paper, we propose a novel geometry-aware two-scale PIFu for 3D human reconstruction from sparse, noisy inputs. Our key idea is to exploit the complementary properties of depth denoising and 3D reconstruction, for learning a two-scale PIFu representation to reconstruct high-frequency fa…
We present a novel framework named NeuralRecon for real-time 3D scene reconstruction from a monocular video. Unlike previous methods that estimate single-view depth maps separately on each key-frame and fuse them later, we propose to directly reconstruct local surfaces represented as sparse TSDF volumes for each video fragment sequentially by a neural network. A learning-based TSDF fusion module based on gated recurrent units is used to guide the network to fuse features from previous fragments. This design allows the network to capture local smoothness prior and global shape prior of 3D surfa…
