New ground-based and space-based photometric data have been obtained and archival spectroscopic measurements were used in this study of three detached early-type and southern-hemisphere eccentric eclipsing binaries GM Nor (P = 1.88 d, e = 0.05), V397 Pup (3.00, 0.30), and PT Vel (1.80, 0.12). Their TESS observations in several sectors have also been included and the corresponding light curves were solved using the Phoebe code. As a result, new accurate photoelectric times of minimum light have been obtained. The newly completed O-C diagrams were analyzed using all reliable timings found in the literature and calculated using the TESS light curves. New or improved values for the elements of apsidal motion were obtained. Using ESO archive spectroscopy, for V397 Pup, the precise absolute parameters were newly derived: M1 = 3.076(35) M$\odot$, M2 = 2.306(35) M$\odot$, and R1 = 2.711(55) R$\odot$, R2 = 1.680(55) R$\odot$. For PT Vel the absolute dimensions were improved: M1 = 2.204(25) M$\odot$, M2 = 1.638(25) M$\odot$, and R1 = 2.108(30) R$\odot$, R2 = 1.605(30) R$\odot$. For GM Nor, the less accurate absolute parameters based on the light curve analysis were evaluated: M1 = 1.94(15) M$\odot$, M2 = 1.84(14) M$\odot$, and R1 = 2.27(20) R$\odot$, R2 = 2.25(20) R$\odot$. We found more precise and relatively short periods of apsidal motion of about 80, 335, and 160 years, along with the corresponding internal structure constants, log k2, -2.524, -2.361, and -2.563, for GM Nor, V397 Pup, and PT Vel, respectively. Relativistic effects are small but not negligible, making up to 10\% of the total apsidal motion rate in all systems. No marks of the presence of the third body were revealed in the light curves, on the O-C diagrams, or in the reduced spectra of the eccentric systems studied here.
The eccentric massive binary HD152248 (also known as V1007 Sco), which hosts two O7.5 III-II(f) stars, is the most emblematic eclipsing O-star binary in the very young and rich open cluster NGC6231. Its properties render the system an interesting target for studying tidally induced apsidal motion. Measuring the rate of apsidal motion in such a binary system gives insight into the internal structure and evolutionary state of the stars composing it. A large set of optical spectra was used to reconstruct the spectra of the individual binary components and establish their radial velocities using a…
We present a new set of radial-velocity measurements of the spectroscopic binary HD 165052 obtained by disentangling of high-resolution optical spectra. The longitude of the periastron (60 +- 2 degrees) shows a variation with respect to previous studies. We have determined the apsidal motion rate of the system (12.1 +- 0.3 degree/yr), which was used to calculate the absolute masses of the binary components: M_1 = 22.5 +- 1.0 and M_2 = 20.5 +- 0.9 solar masses. Analysing the separated spectra we have re-classified the components as O7Vz and O7.5Vz stars.
We present a spectroscopic study of the eclipsing binary system AS Camelopardalis, the first such study based on phase-resolved CCD echelle spectra. Via a spectral disentangling analysis we measure the minimum masses of the stars to be M_A sin^3 i = 3.213 +/- 0.007 M_sun and M_B sin^3 i = 2.323 +/- 0.006 M_sun, their effective temperatures to be T_eff(A) = 12840 +/- 120 K and T_eff(B) = 10580 +/- 240 K, and their projected rotational velocities to be v_A sin i_A = 14.5 +/- 0.1 km/s and v_B sin i_B = 4.6 +/- 0.1 km/s. These projected rotational velocities appear to be much lower than the synchr…
Here we present an ensemble study of spin-orbit alignment in 51 close double star systems. We determine spin-orbit angles, obliquities, in 39 of these systems making use of recently improved apsidal motion rate measurements and apsidal motion constants. In the remaining 12 systems researchers have constrained spin-orbit alignment by different combinations of measurements of apsidal motion rates, projected obliquities and stellar inclinations. Of the 51 systems 48 are consistent with alignment albeit with some measurements having large uncertainties. A Fisher distribution with mean zero and a c…
We present the first modern analysis of two young, eclipsing binaries, EK Cep and HS Her, based on new, ground-based, CCD multicolour light curves as well as the TESS observations, radial velocity curves, and eclipse timing measurements. The orbital and stellar parameters of the stars are determined by Roche modelling, and their evolutionary status is examined using a grid of isochrones and evolutionary tracks. We find that HS Her is 25-32 Myr old and its components are on the zero-age main sequence; at the age of 16-20 Myr, the primary of EK Cep is also on the ZAMS, but its secondary is a pre…
Eclipsing binaries are important tools for studying stellar evolution and stellar interiors. Their accurate fundamental parameters are used to test evolutionary models, and systems showing apsidal motion can also be used to test the model's internal structure predictions. For this purpose, we present a photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the eclipsing binary BW Aquarii, an evolved F-type binary with slow apsidal motion. We model the K2 C3 light curve using the Eclipsing Light Curve code to determine several orbital and stellar parameters, as well as measure the eclipse times to determine…
We present results of new photometric observations of the contact binary system \astrobj{HI Pup} as well as the radial velocity curve of the system. Time series multicolour photometry was obtained at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) using the 1-m Cassegrain Telescope. We applied a simultaneous solution to the $BVRI$ light and radial velocity curves in order to determine the physical parameters of the system. From an analysis of the new multicolour data, the physical parameters were found to be $M_1=1.22M_{\odot}$, $M_2=0.23M_{\odot}$, $R_1=1.44R_{\odot}$, $R_2=0.67R_{\odot}$, …
We present an analysis of the apsidal motion and light curve parameters of 54 never-before-studied galactic Algol-type binaries. This is the first analysis of such a large sample of eccentric eclipsing binaries in our Galaxy, and has enabled us to identify several systems that are worthy of further study. Bringing together data from various databases and surveys, supplemented with new observations, we have been able to trace the long-term evolution of the eccentric orbit over durations extending back up to several decades. Our present study explores a rather different sample of stars to those …
New CCD observations for thirteen eccentric eclipsing binaries from the Large Magellanic Cloud were carried out using the Danish 1.54-meter telescope located at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. These systems were observed for their times of minima and 56 new minima were obtained. These are needed for accurate determination of the apsidal motion. Besides that, in total 436 times of minima were derived from the photometric databases OGLE and MACHO. The (O-C) diagrams of minima timings for these B-type binaries were analysed and the parameters of the apsidal motion were computed. The light curv…
HD165052 is a short-period massive eccentric binary system that undergoes apsidal motion. As the rate of apsidal motion is directly related to the internal structure constants of the binary components, its study allows to get insight into the internal structure of the stars. We use medium- and high-resolution spectroscopic observations of HD165052 to provide constraints on the fundamental properties of the binary system and the evolutionary state of its components. We apply a spectral disentangling code to reconstruct artefact-free spectra of the individual stars and derive the radial velociti…
Aims: As part of our observational projects at the La Silla Danish 1.54-meter telescope, we aim to measure the precise times of minimum light for eccentric eclipsing binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud, needed for accurate determination of apsidal motion. Many new times of minima were derived from the photometric databases OGLE and MACHO. Several new minima were also observed. Five early-type and eccentric-orbit eclipsing binaries: HV 982 (P = 5.34 d, e = 0.15), HV 2274 (5.73 d, 0.17), MACHO 78.6097.13 (3.11 d, 0.05), MACHO 81.8881.47 (3.88 d, 0.22), and MACHO 79.5377.76 (2.64 d, 0.06) were…
The measurement of the apsidal motion in close eccentric massive binary systems provides essential information to probe the internal structure of the stars that compose the system. Following the determination of the fundamental stellar and binary parameters, we make use of the tidally induced apsidal motion to infer constraints on the internal structure of the stars composing the binary system HD152219. The extensive set of spectroscopic, photometric, and radial velocity observations allows us to constrain the fundamental parameters of the stars together with the rate of apsidal motion of the …
Massive binary systems are important laboratories in which to probe the properties of massive stars and stellar physics in general. In this context, we analysed optical spectroscopy and photometry of the eccentric short-period early-type binary HD 152218 in the young open cluster NGC 6231. We reconstructed the spectra of the individual stars using a separating code. The individual spectra were then compared with synthetic spectra obtained with the CMFGEN model atmosphere code. We furthermore analysed the light curve of the binary and used it to constrain the orbital inclination and to derive a…
Aim: Our purpose is to provide reliable stellar parameters for a significant sample of eclipsing binaries, which are representative of a whole dwarf and metal-poor galaxy. We also aim at providing a new estimate of the mean distance to the SMC and of its depth along the line of sight for the observed field of view. Method: We use radial velocity curves obtained with the ESO FLAMES facility at the VLT and light curves from the OGLE-II photometric survey. The radial velocities were obtained by least-squares fits of the observed spectra to synthetic ones, excluding the hydrogen Balmer lines. Resu…
New high resolution spectra of the short period (P~1.76 days) young detached binary LT CMa are reported for the first time. By combining the results from the analysis of new radial velocity curves and published light curves, we determine values for the masses, radii and temperatures as follows: M_1= 5.59 (0.20) M_o, R_1=3.56 (0.07) R_o and T_eff1= 17000 (500) K for the primary and M_2=3.36 (0.14) M_o, R_2= 2.04 (0.05) R_o and T_eff2= 13140 (800) K for the secondary. Static absorbtion features apart from those coming from the close binary components are detected in the several spectral regions.…
We consider a synchronized, circular-orbit binary consisting of a polytrope with index n and a point-mass object, and use a self-consistent field method to construct the equilibrium structure of the polytrope under rotational and tidal perturbations. Our self-consistent field method is distinct from others in that the equilibrium orbital angular velocity is calculated automatically rather than being prescribed, which is crucial for obtaining apsidal motion rates accurately. We find that the centrifugal and tidal forces make perturbed stars more centrally condensed and larger in size. For n=1.5…
This work presents an extensive analysis of the properties of three southern semi-detached eclipsing binaries hosting a pulsating component, namely HM Pup, V632 Sco, and TT Vel. Systematic multi-filtered photometric observations were obtained using telescopes located in Australia and Chile mostly between 2018-2021. These observations were combined with data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission for a detailed analysis of pulsations. Spectral types and radial velocities were determined from spectra obtained with the Australian National University's 2.3 m telescope and Wi…
We present time-series photometric and spectroscopic data for seven old novae. They are used to derive the orbital period for the systems V365 Car (5.35 h), AR Cir (5.14 h), V972 Oph (6.75 h), HS Pup (6.41 h), V373 Sct (3.69 h), V909 Sgr (3.43 h) and CN Vel (5.29 h). Their addition increases the number of orbital periods for novae by ~10 per cent. The eclipsing nature of V909 Sgr is confirmed, and in three other cases (V365 Car, Ar Cir and V373 Sct) we detect significant photometric orbital variability with amplitudes >=0.2 mag in R. The resulting period distribution is briefly discussed. We f…
V445 Puppis is the only helium nova observed to date; its eruption in late 2000 showed high velocities up to 8500 km/s and a remarkable bipolar morphology cinched by an equatorial dust disc. Here we present multi-frequency radio observations of V445 Pup obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA) spanning 1.5 to 43.3 GHz, and between 2001 January and 2008 March (days 89 to 2700 after eruption). The radio light curve is dominated by synchrotron emission over these seven years, and shows four distinct radio flares. Resolved radio images obtained in the VLA A configuration show that the synchrotron …
New spectrometric (HERCULES) and ground-based multi-colour photometric data on the multiple star V410 Puppis are combined with satellite photometry (HIPPARCOS and TESS), as well as historic astrometric observations. Absolute parameters for V410 Pup Aab are derived: $M_{Aa}$ = $3.15 \pm 0.10$, $M_{Ab}$ = $1.83 \pm 0.08$ (M$_{\odot}$); $R_{Aa}$ = $2.12 \pm 0.10$, $R_{Ab}$ = $1.52 \pm 0.08$ (R$_\odot$); $a$ = $6.57 \pm 0.04$ R$_\odot$; $T_{Aa}$ = $12500 \pm 1000$, $T_{Ab}$ = $9070 \pm 800$ (K), and photometric distance $350 \pm 10$ (pc). We report the discovery of a low-amplitude SPB variation in…
We present UBVRI photometric measurements and spectroscopic observations of the double-lined eclipsing binary V821 Cas. The radial velocities were obtained by means of the cross-correlation technique. Simultaneous analyses of the multi-band light curves and RVs give the absolute parameters for the stars as: M$_1$=2.05$\pm$0.07 M$_{\odot}$, M$_2$=1.63$\pm$0.06 M$_{\odot}$, R$_1$=2.31$\pm$0.03 R$_{\odot}$, R$_2$=1.39$\pm$0.02 R$_{\odot}$, T$_{eff_1}$=9 400$\pm$400 K, and T$_{eff_2}$=8 600$\pm$400 K. Analysis of the O-C residuals yielded an apsidal motion in the binary at a rate of $\dotω$=0$^{\d…
Double-lined eclipsing binaries allow the direct determination of masses and radii, which are key to test stellar models. With the launch of the TESS mission, many well-known eclipsing binaries have been observed at higher photometric precision, permitting the improvement of the absolute dimensions determinations. Using TESS data and newly-obtained spectroscopic observations, we aim at determining the masses and radii of the eccentric eclipsing binary systems V889 Aql and V402 Lac, together with their apsidal motion parameters. We modelled simultaneously radial velocity curves and times of ecl…

We present the analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data of six bright Galactic Cepheids: GH Carinae, V419 Centauri, V898 Centauri, AD Puppis, AY Sagittarii, and ST Velorum. Based on new radial velocity data (in some cases supplemented with earlier data available in the literature), these Cepheids have been found to be members in spectroscopic binary systems. V898 Cen turned out to have one of the largest orbital radial velocity amplitude (> 40 km/s) among the known binary Cepheids. The data are insufficient to determine the orbital periods nor other orbital elements for these new spectro…
We report the results of a long-term spectroscopic monitoring of the A-type supergiant with the B[e] phenomenon 3 Pup = HD 62623. We confirm earlier findings that it is a binary system. The orbital parameters were derived using cross-correlation of the spectra in a range of 4460-4632 A, which contains over 30 absorption lines. The orbit was found circular with a period of $137.4\pm0.1$ days, radial velocity semi-amplitude $K_{1} = 5.0\pm0.8$ km s$^{-1}$, systemic radial velocity $γ= +26.4\pm2.0$ km s$^{-1}$, and the mass function $f(m) = (1.81^{+0.97}_{-0.76})\times10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$. The ob…
Single dish observations of AGB star L$_2$ Pup have revealed exceptionally low mass loss rate and expansion velocity, challenging interpretations in terms of standard wind models. Recent VLT and ALMA observations have drawn a detailed picture of the circumstellar envelope within $\sim$20 au from the centre of the star: a nearly edge-on rotating disc of gas and dust, probably hosting a planetary companion near the star. However, these observations provide no direct information on the wind escaping the gravity of the star. The present article uses ALMA observations of the $^{12,13}$CO(3-2), $^{2…
We present a detailed study of the G0V detached eclipsing binary EW Ori, based on new photometric and spectroscopic observations. Masses and radii that are precise to 0.9% and 0.5%, respectively, have been established for both components. The 1.12 Msun secondary component reveals weak Ca II H and K emission and is probably mildly active; no signs of activity are seen for the 1.17 Msun primary. We derive an [Fe/H] abundance of +0.05 +/- 0.09 and similar abundances for Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, and Ni. Yonsai-Yale and Granada solar-scaled evolutionary models for the observed metal abundance reproduce …
We analyzed light curves of five neon novae, QU Vul, V351 Pup, V382 Vel, V693 CrA, and V1974 Cyg, and determined their white dwarf (WD) masses and distance moduli on the basis of theoretical light curves composed of free-free and photospheric emission. For QU Vul, we obtained a distance of d~2.4 kpc, reddening of E(B-V)~0.55, and WD mass of M_WD=0.82-0.96 M_sun. This suggests that an oxygen-neon WD lost a mass of more than ~0.1 M_sun since its birth. For V351 Pup, we obtained d~5.5 kpc, E(B-V)~0.45, and M_WD=0.98-1.1 M_sun. For V382 Vel, we obtained d~1.6 kpc, E(B-V)~0.15, and M_WD=1.13-1.28 M…
We explore the fascinating eclipses and dynamics of the compact hierarchical triple star system KOI-126 (KIC 5897826). This system is comprised of a pair of M-dwarf stars (KOI-126 B and C) in a 1.74 day orbit which revolve around an F-star (KOI-126 A) every 34 days. Complex eclipse shapes are created as the M stars transit the F star, due to two effects: (i) the duration of the eclipse is a significant fraction of the M-star orbital period, so the prograde or retrograde motion of the M stars in their orbit lead to unusually short or long duration eclipses; (ii) due to 3-body dynamics, the M-st…

The eclipsing binaries are still important objects for our understanding of the universe. Especially these ones located within the more complex multiple systems can help us solving the problem of their origin and subsequent evolution of these higher order multiples. Photometry and spectroscopy spanning over more than 25 yr were used for the first complete analysis of the two bright triple systems, namely V348 And and V572 Per. The light curves in photometric filters were combined together with the radial velocities and analyzed simultaneously, yielding the precise physical parameters of the ec…
We report eclipse timing variation analyses of 26 compact hierarchical triple stars comprised of an eccentric eclipsing ('inner') binary and a relatively close tertiary component found in the {\em Kepler} field. We simultaneously fit the primary and secondary $O-C$ curves of each system for the light-travel time effect (LTTE), as well as dynamical perturbations caused by the tertiary on different timescales. For the first time, we include those contributions of three-body interactions which originate from the eccentric nature of the inner binary. These effects manifest themselves both on the p…
Aims: The analysis of combined photometry and spectroscopy of eccentric eclipsing binary systems facilitates the derivation of precise values for the parameters of the component stars and their orbits, thereby providing stringent tests of theories of stellar structure and evolution. In this paper two eccentric eclipsing binary systems, TYC 5378-1590-1 and TYC 8378-252-1, are studied in detail for the first time. Methods: Radial velocities were obtained using cross-correlation methods applied to mid-resolution spectra covering almost the entire orbital phase domains of these two systems. TESS p…
$ζ$ Phoenicis is a bright binary system containing B6V and B8V stars. It has deep total and annular eclipses, a slightly eccentric orbit with a period of 1.669 d, apsidal motion and a third body on a wider orbit. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite light curve and published radial velocities of this system are analysed to determine masses of 3.91 +/- 0.06 Msun and 2.54 +/- 0.03 Msun and radii of 2.84 +/- 0.02 Rsun and 1.89 +/- 0.01 Rsun. The resulting distance to the system is in agreement with its trigonometric parallax. The physical properties of the stars, with the exception of the ef…
We report on the properties of eclipsing binaries from the Kepler mission with a newly developed photometric modeling code, which uses the light curve, spectral energy distribution of each binary, and stellar evolution models to infer stellar masses without the need for radial velocity measurements. We present solutions and posteriors to orbital and stellar parameters for 728 systems, forming the largest homogeneous catalogue of full Kepler binary parameter estimates to date. Using comparisons to published radial velocity measurements, we demonstrate that the inferred properties (e.g., masses)…
