The measurement of the apsidal motion in close eccentric massive binary systems provides essential information to probe the internal structure of the stars that compose the system. Following the determination of the fundamental stellar and binary parameters, we make use of the tidally induced apsidal motion to infer constraints on the internal structure of the stars composing the binary system HD152219. The extensive set of spectroscopic, photometric, and radial velocity observations allows us to constrain the fundamental parameters of the stars together with the rate of apsidal motion of the system. Stellar structure and evolution models are further built with the Clés code testing different prescriptions for the internal mixing occurring inside the stars. The effect of stellar rotation axis misalignment with respect to the normal to the orbital plane on our interpretation of the apsidal motion in terms of internal structure constants is investigated. Made of an O9.5 III primary star (M1 = 18.64+/-0.47M${_\odot}$, R1 = 9.40+0.14-0.15R${_\odot}$, Teff,1 = 30900+/-1000 K) and a B1-2 V-III secondary star (M2 = 7.70+/-0.12M${_\odot}$, R2 = 3.69+/-0.06R${_\odot}$, Teff,2 = 21697+/-1000 K), the binary system HD152219 displays apsidal motion at a rate (1.198+/-0.300)°yr-1. The weighted-average mean of the internal structure constant of the binary system is inferred: k2 = 0.00173+/-0.00052. For the Clés models to reproduce the k2-value of the primary star, a significant enhanced mixing is required, notably through the turbulent mixing, but at the cost that other stellar parameters cannot be reproduced simultaneously. The difficulty to reproduce the k2-value simultaneously with the stellar parameters as well as the incompatibility between the age estimates of the primary and secondary stars are indications that some physics of the stellar interior are still not completely understood.
We observed the recently discovered eccentric eclipsing binary GSC 04052-01378 in order to improve the light curve parameters and to find further evidence of its probable high eccentricity and of apsidal motion. Furthermore, we propose a basic stellar model that fits very well the observations of our dataset and where the eccentricity is found to be e = 0.538(6), which corresponds to an high value among this group of binaries.
We present the apsidal motion and light-curve analyses of 21 eccentric eclipsing binaries located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Most of these systems have never been studied before, hence their orbital and physical properties as well as the apsidal motion parameters are given here for the first time. All the systems are of early spectral type, having orbital periods up to 4 days. The apsidal motion periods were derived to be from 7.2 to 200 yr (OGLE-SMC-ECL-2194 having the shortest apsidal period among known main-sequence systems). The orbital eccentricities are usually rather mild (median of…
Galactic short period double white dwarfs (DWD) are guaranteed gravitational wave (GW) sources for the next generation of space-based interferometers sensitive to low-frequency GWs (10^{-4}- 1 Hz). Here we investigate the possibility of constraining the white dwarf (WD) properties through measurements of apsidal precession in eccentric binaries. We analyze the general relativistic (GR), tidal, and rotational contributions to apsidal precession by using detailed He WD models. We find that apsidal precession can lead to a detectable shift in the emitted GW signal, the effect being stronger (weak…
Aims: The Danish 1.54-meter telescope at the La Silla observatory was used for photometric monitoring of selected eccentric eclipsing binaries located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The new times of minima were derived for these systems, which are needed for accurate determination of the apsidal motion. Moreover, many new times of minima were derived from the photometric databases OGLE and MACHO. Eighteen early-type eccentric-orbit eclipsing binaries were studied. Methods: Their (O-C) diagrams of minima timings were analysed and the parameters of the apsidal motion were obtained. The light cur…
We present an extensive study of 162 early-type binary systems located in the LMC galaxy that show apsidal motion and have never been studied before. For the ample systems, we performed light curve and apsidal motion modelling for the first time. These systems have a median orbital period of 2.2 days and typical periods of the apsidal motion were derived to be of the order of decades. We identified two record-breaking systems. The first, OGLE LMC-ECL-22613, shows the shortest known apsidal motion period among systems with main sequence components (6.6 years); it contains a third component with…
We present the first modern analysis of two young, eclipsing binaries, EK Cep and HS Her, based on new, ground-based, CCD multicolour light curves as well as the TESS observations, radial velocity curves, and eclipse timing measurements. The orbital and stellar parameters of the stars are determined by Roche modelling, and their evolutionary status is examined using a grid of isochrones and evolutionary tracks. We find that HS Her is 25-32 Myr old and its components are on the zero-age main sequence; at the age of 16-20 Myr, the primary of EK Cep is also on the ZAMS, but its secondary is a pre…
New CCD observations for thirteen eccentric eclipsing binaries from the Large Magellanic Cloud were carried out using the Danish 1.54-meter telescope located at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. These systems were observed for their times of minima and 56 new minima were obtained. These are needed for accurate determination of the apsidal motion. Besides that, in total 436 times of minima were derived from the photometric databases OGLE and MACHO. The (O-C) diagrams of minima timings for these B-type binaries were analysed and the parameters of the apsidal motion were computed. The light curv…
Aims: As part of our observational projects at the La Silla Danish 1.54-meter telescope, we aim to measure the precise times of minimum light for eccentric eclipsing binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud, needed for accurate determination of apsidal motion. Many new times of minima were derived from the photometric databases OGLE and MACHO. Several new minima were also observed. Five early-type and eccentric-orbit eclipsing binaries: HV 982 (P = 5.34 d, e = 0.15), HV 2274 (5.73 d, 0.17), MACHO 78.6097.13 (3.11 d, 0.05), MACHO 81.8881.47 (3.88 d, 0.22), and MACHO 79.5377.76 (2.64 d, 0.06) were…
This paper is part of a study of the apsidal motion in close eccentric massive binary systems, which aims to constrain the internal structure of the stars. We focus on the binary CPD-41°7742 and revisit HD152218. Independent studies of CPD-41°7742 in the past showed large discrepancies in the longitude of periastron of the orbit, hinting at the presence of apsidal motion. We perform a consistent analysis of all observational data, explicitly accounting for the apsidal motion. We use spectroscopic and photometric observations of CPD-41°7742 to infer values for the fundamental stellar and binary…
HD165052 is a short-period massive eccentric binary system that undergoes apsidal motion. As the rate of apsidal motion is directly related to the internal structure constants of the binary components, its study allows to get insight into the internal structure of the stars. We use medium- and high-resolution spectroscopic observations of HD165052 to provide constraints on the fundamental properties of the binary system and the evolutionary state of its components. We apply a spectral disentangling code to reconstruct artefact-free spectra of the individual stars and derive the radial velociti…
Heartbeat stars are eccentric (e > 0.2) ellipsoidal variables whose light curves resemble a cardiogram. We present the observations and corresponding model of KIC 3749404, a highly eccentric (e = 0.66), short period (P = 20.3 d) heartbeat star with tidally induced pulsations. A binary star model was created using PHOEBE, which we modified to include tidally induced pulsations and Doppler boosting. The morphology of the photometric periastron variation (heartbeat) depends strongly on the eccentricity, inclination and argument of periastron. We show that the inclusion of tidally induced pulsatio…
V578 Mon is a system of two early B-type stars in the Rosette Nebula star-forming region (NGC 2244), and is one of only nine eclipsing binaries with component masses greater than 10 M\odot whose physical parameters have been determined with an accuracy of better than 3%. It is therefore a benchmark system for evolutionary and stellar structure models of newly formed massive stars. Combining our multi-band light curves spanning 40 yr with previous light curve data from the literature, we fit a model light curve that for the first time includes the effects of apsidal motion of the system. We mea…
Galactic interacting double white dwarfs (DWD) are guaranteed gravitational wave (GW) sources for the GW detector LISA, with more than 10^4 binaries expected to be detected over the mission's lifetime. Part of this population is expected to be eccentric, and here we investigate the potential for constraining the white dwarf (WD) properties through apsidal precession in these binaries. We analyze the tidal, rotational, and general relativistic contributions to apsidal precession by using detailed He WD models, where the evolution of the star's interior is followed throughout the cooling phase. …
Our main aim is the first detailed analysis of the two eclipsing binaries V456 Oph and V490 Cyg. The system V456 Oph has been studied both photometrically via an analysis of its light curve observed by the INTEGRAL/OMC and by the period analysis of all available times of minima. V490 Cyg has been studied by means of a period analysis only. Many new times of minima for both systems have recently been observed and derived. This allows us for the first time to study in detail the processes that affect both binaries. The main result is the discovery that both systems have eccentric orbits. For V45…
We present an analysis of the apsidal motion and light curve parameters of 54 never-before-studied galactic Algol-type binaries. This is the first analysis of such a large sample of eccentric eclipsing binaries in our Galaxy, and has enabled us to identify several systems that are worthy of further study. Bringing together data from various databases and surveys, supplemented with new observations, we have been able to trace the long-term evolution of the eccentric orbit over durations extending back up to several decades. Our present study explores a rather different sample of stars to those …
We analyze the eccentric response of a low mass coplanar circumbinary disc to secular tidal forcing by a Keplerian eccentric orbit central binary. The disc acquires a forced eccentricity whose magnitude depends on the properties of the binary and disc. The largest eccentricities occur when there is a global apsidal resonance in the disc. The driving frequency by the binary is its apsidal frequency that is equal to zero. A global resonance occurs when the disc properties permit the existence of a zero apsidal frequency free eccentric mode. Resonances occur for different free eccentric modes tha…
Context. The variability of the Wolf-Rayet star EZ CMa has been documented for close to half a century, and a clear periodicity of $\sim$3.7 days is established. However, all attempts to prove that it is a binary have failed because the photometric, spectroscopic, and polarimetric variations are not coherent over more than a few orbital cycles. Aims. In this letter we show that the lack of coherence in the variability can be explained with a very rapid apsidal motion in a binary orbit.} Methods. We measured the times of minima in a recently published exceptionally long photometric light curve …
Massive binary systems are important laboratories in which to probe the properties of massive stars and stellar physics in general. In this context, we analysed optical spectroscopy and photometry of the eccentric short-period early-type binary HD 152218 in the young open cluster NGC 6231. We reconstructed the spectra of the individual stars using a separating code. The individual spectra were then compared with synthetic spectra obtained with the CMFGEN model atmosphere code. We furthermore analysed the light curve of the binary and used it to constrain the orbital inclination and to derive a…
Analyzing available photometry from Hipparcos, ASAS, Pi of the sky and Super WASP, we found that the system SY Phe is a detached eclipsing binary with similar components and orbital period about 5.27089 days. It has a slightly eccentric orbit, however the apsidal motion is probably very slow. The system undergoes an additional photometric variation on longer time scales superimposed on the eclipsing light curve. It also contains one distant component, hence the third light was also considered.
Here we present an ensemble study of spin-orbit alignment in 51 close double star systems. We determine spin-orbit angles, obliquities, in 39 of these systems making use of recently improved apsidal motion rate measurements and apsidal motion constants. In the remaining 12 systems researchers have constrained spin-orbit alignment by different combinations of measurements of apsidal motion rates, projected obliquities and stellar inclinations. Of the 51 systems 48 are consistent with alignment albeit with some measurements having large uncertainties. A Fisher distribution with mean zero and a c…
Main aim of this paper is the first light curve and apsidal motion analysis of thirteen eccentric eclipsing binaries and to reveal their basic physical properties. All of the systems were studied by method of period analysis of times of minima and the light curve analysis. Many new times of minima for all of the systems were derived and collected from the data obtained by the automatic, robotic or satellite telescopes. This allow us to study the apsidal motion in these systems in detail for the first time. From the light curve analysis the first rough estimations of the physical properties of …
Apsidal motion in massive eccentric binaries offers precious information about the internal structure of the stars. This is especially true for twin binaries consisting of two nearly identical stars. We make use of the tidally induced apsidal motion in the twin binary HD152248 to infer constraints on the internal structure of the O7.5 III-II stars composing this system. We build stellar evolution models with the code Clés assuming different prescriptions for the internal mixing occurring inside the stars. We identify the models that best reproduce the observationally determined present-day pro…
For the past three decades, and until recently, there has been a serious discrepancy between the observed and theoretical values of the apsidal motion rate dw/dt of the eccentric eclipsing binary DI Her, which has even been interpreted occasionally as a possible failure of General Relativity (GR). Recent observations of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect have shown convincingly that the reason for the anomaly is that the rotational axes of the stars and the orbital axis are misaligned, which changes the predicted rate of precession significantly. Although as a result of those measurements the disa…
We report long-termed UBVRIRcIc photometry of the highly eccentric 12.04 day detached eclipsing binary V490 Sct (V =13.1, B9.5+A0, e = 0.40), which we use to determine its relative and absolute parameters. The absolute masses, radii, and temperatures are Ma = 2.33+/-0.1 Msun, Ra = 1.91+/-0.04 Rsun, and Ta = 9960+/-60 K for the primary and Mb = 2.24+/-0.1 Msun, Rb = 1.86+/-0.04 Rsun, and Tb = 9700+/-80 K for the secondary. The system displays a slow periastron advance that is dominated by general relativity (GR). Our measurement, dw/dt = 0.86 deg/century, is 32% less then the expected rate, dw/…
The eccentric massive binary HD152248 (also known as V1007 Sco), which hosts two O7.5 III-II(f) stars, is the most emblematic eclipsing O-star binary in the very young and rich open cluster NGC6231. Its properties render the system an interesting target for studying tidally induced apsidal motion. Measuring the rate of apsidal motion in such a binary system gives insight into the internal structure and evolutionary state of the stars composing it. A large set of optical spectra was used to reconstruct the spectra of the individual binary components and establish their radial velocities using a…
We report eclipse timing variation analyses of 26 compact hierarchical triple stars comprised of an eccentric eclipsing ('inner') binary and a relatively close tertiary component found in the {\em Kepler} field. We simultaneously fit the primary and secondary $O-C$ curves of each system for the light-travel time effect (LTTE), as well as dynamical perturbations caused by the tertiary on different timescales. For the first time, we include those contributions of three-body interactions which originate from the eccentric nature of the inner binary. These effects manifest themselves both on the p…
Aims: The analysis of combined photometry and spectroscopy of eccentric eclipsing binary systems facilitates the derivation of precise values for the parameters of the component stars and their orbits, thereby providing stringent tests of theories of stellar structure and evolution. In this paper two eccentric eclipsing binary systems, TYC 5378-1590-1 and TYC 8378-252-1, are studied in detail for the first time. Methods: Radial velocities were obtained using cross-correlation methods applied to mid-resolution spectra covering almost the entire orbital phase domains of these two systems. TESS p…
We present a spectroscopic study of the eclipsing binary system AS Camelopardalis, the first such study based on phase-resolved CCD echelle spectra. Via a spectral disentangling analysis we measure the minimum masses of the stars to be M_A sin^3 i = 3.213 +/- 0.007 M_sun and M_B sin^3 i = 2.323 +/- 0.006 M_sun, their effective temperatures to be T_eff(A) = 12840 +/- 120 K and T_eff(B) = 10580 +/- 240 K, and their projected rotational velocities to be v_A sin i_A = 14.5 +/- 0.1 km/s and v_B sin i_B = 4.6 +/- 0.1 km/s. These projected rotational velocities appear to be much lower than the synchr…
The theoretical apsidal motion constants are key tools to investigate the stellar interiors in close eccentric binary systems. In addition, these constants and the moment of inertia are also important to investigate the tidal evolution of close binary stars as well as of exo-planetary systems. The aim of the paper is to present new evolutionary models, based on the MESA package, that include the internal structure constants (k$_2$, k$_3$, and k$_4$), the radius of gyration, and the gravitational potential energy for configurations computed from the pre-main-sequence (PMS) up to the first ascen…
The eclipsing binaries are still important objects for our understanding of the universe. Especially these ones located within the more complex multiple systems can help us solving the problem of their origin and subsequent evolution of these higher order multiples. Photometry and spectroscopy spanning over more than 25 yr were used for the first complete analysis of the two bright triple systems, namely V348 And and V572 Per. The light curves in photometric filters were combined together with the radial velocities and analyzed simultaneously, yielding the precise physical parameters of the ec…
Delta Cir is known as an O7.5 III eclipsing and spectroscopic binary with an eccentric orbit. Penny et al. discovered the presence of a third component in the IUE spectra. The eclipsing binary and the third body revolve around a common centre of gravity with a period of 1644 days in an eccentric orbit with the semimajor axis of 10 AU. We demonstrate the presence of the apsidal-line rotation with a period of about 141 years, which is considerably longer than its theoretically predicted value, based on the published radii of the binary components derived from the Hipparchos Hp light curve. Howev…
The change in the argument of periastron of eclipsing binaries, i.e., the apsidal motion caused by classical and relativistic effects, can be measured from variations in the difference between the time of minimum light of the primary and secondary eclipses. Poor apsidal motion rate determinations and large uncertainties in the classical term have hampered previous attempts to determine the general relativistic term with sufficient precision to test General Relativity predictions. As a product of the TESS mission, thousands of high-precision light curves from eclipsing binaries are now availabl…
New high resolution spectra of the short period (P~1.76 days) young detached binary LT CMa are reported for the first time. By combining the results from the analysis of new radial velocity curves and published light curves, we determine values for the masses, radii and temperatures as follows: M_1= 5.59 (0.20) M_o, R_1=3.56 (0.07) R_o and T_eff1= 17000 (500) K for the primary and M_2=3.36 (0.14) M_o, R_2= 2.04 (0.05) R_o and T_eff2= 13140 (800) K for the secondary. Static absorbtion features apart from those coming from the close binary components are detected in the several spectral regions.…
Double-lined eclipsing binaries allow the direct determination of masses and radii, which are key to test stellar models. With the launch of the TESS mission, many well-known eclipsing binaries have been observed at higher photometric precision, permitting the improvement of the absolute dimensions determinations. Using TESS data and newly-obtained spectroscopic observations, we aim at determining the masses and radii of the eccentric eclipsing binary systems V889 Aql and V402 Lac, together with their apsidal motion parameters. We modelled simultaneously radial velocity curves and times of ecl…
(abridged) We present an in-depth study of the hard-binary population of the old (7 Gyr) open cluster NGC 188. The main-sequence solar-type hard binaries in NGC 188 are nearly indistinguishable from similar binaries in the Galactic field. We find a global solar-type main-sequence hard-binary frequency in NGC 188 of 29 +/- 3 % for binaries with periods less than 10^4 days. For main-sequence hard binaries in the cluster we observe a log-period distribution that rises towards our detection limit, a roughly Gaussian eccentricity distribution centered on e = 0.35 (for binaries with periods longer t…
Classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) are young stellar objects that accrete materials from their accretion disc influenced by their strong magnetic field. The magnetic pressure truncates the disc at a few stellar radii and forces the material to leave the disc plane and fall onto the stellar surface by following the magnetic field lines. However, this global scheme may be disturbed by the presence of a companion interacting gravitationally with the accreting component. This work is aiming to study the accretion and the magnetic field of the tight eccentric binary DQ Tau, composed of two equal-mass …
In this paper we compare the effects of different theories of gravitation on the apsidal motion of a sample of Eccentric Eclipsing Detached Binary stars. The comparison is performed by using the formalism of the Post-Newtonian parametrization to calculate the theoretical advance at periastron and compare it to the observed one, after having considered the effects of the structure and rotation of the involved stars. A variance analysis on the results of this comparison, shows that no significant difference can be found due to the effect of the different theories under test with respect to the s…
We compare the structures of the jets of the pre-planetary nebulae (PN) CRL618 and the young stellar object (YSO) NGC 1333 IRAS4A2 and propose that in both cases the jets are launched near periastron passages of a highly eccentric binary system. The pre-PN CRL618 has two `twin-jets' on each side, where by `twin-jets' we refer to a structure where one side is composed of two very close and narrow jets that were launched at the same time. We analyze the position-velocity diagram of NGC 1333 IRAS4A2, and find that it also has the twin-jets structure. In both systems the orientation of the two twi…
