Instabilities driven by pressure anisotropy play a critical role in modulating the energy transfer in space and astrophysical plasmas. For the first time, we simulate the evolution and saturation of the parallel proton firehose instability using a multi-fluid model without adding artificial viscosity. These simulations are performed using a 10-moment, multi-fluid model with local and gradient relaxation heat-flux closures in high-$β$ proton-electron plasmas. When these higher-order moments are included and pressure anisotropy is permitted to develop in all species, we find that the electrons have a significant impact on the saturation of the parallel proton firehose instability, modulating the proton pressure anisotropy as the instability saturates. Even for lower $β$s more relevant to heliospheric plasmas, we observe a pronounced electron energization in simulations using the gradient relaxation closure. Our results indicate that resolving the electron pressure anisotropy is important to correctly describe the behavior of multi-species plasma systems.
In the solar wind plasma an excess of kinetic temperature along the background magnetic field stimulates proton firehose modes to grow if the parallel plasma beta parameter is sufficiently high, i.e., $β_{p \parallel}\gtrsim 1$. This instability can prevent the expansion-driven anisotropy from increasing indefinitely, and explain the observations. Moreover, such kinetic instabilities are expected to be even more effective in the presence of suprathermal Kappa-distributed populations, which are ubiquitous in the solar wind, are less affected by collisions than the core population, but contribut…
In the solar wind an equipartition of kinetic energy densities can be easily established between thermal and suprathermal electrons and the instability conditions are markedly altered by the interplay of these two populations. The new thresholds derived here for the periodic branch of firehose instability shape the limits of temperature anisotropy reported by the observations for both electron populations. This instability constraint is particularly important for the suprathermal electrons which, by comparison to thermal populations, are even less controlled by the particle-particle collisions…
Energy conversion via reconnecting current sheets is common in space and astrophysical plasmas. Frequently, current sheets disrupt at multiple reconnection sites, leading to the formation of plasmoid structures between sites, which might affect energy conversion. We present in situ evidence of the firehose instability in multiple reconnection in the Earth's magnetotail. The observed proton beams accelerated in the direction parallel to magnetic field and ion-scale fluctuations of whistler type imply the development of firehose instability between two active reconnection sites. The linear wave …
The evolution of the electron heat flux in the solar wind is regulated by the interplay between several effects: solar wind expansion, that can potentially drive velocity-space instabilties, turbulence and wave-particle interactions, and, possibly, collisions. Here we address the respective role played by the solar wind expansion and the electron firehose instability, developing in the presence of multiple electron populations, in regulating the heat flux. We carry out fully kinetic, Expanding Box Model simulations and separately analyze the enthalpy, bulk and velocity distribution function sk…
We study the effects of heat flows and velocity shear on the parallel firehose instability in weakly collisional plasma flow. For this purpose we apply an anisotropic 16-moments MHD fluid closure model that takes into account the pressure and temperature anisotropy, as well as the effect of anisotropic heat flux. The linear stability analysis of the firehose modes is carried out in the incompressible limit, where the MHD flow is parallel to the background magnetic field, while the velocity is sheared in the direction transverse to the flow direction. It seems that an increase of the velocity s…
Firehose-like instabilities (FIs) are cited in multiple astrophysical applications. Of particular interest are the kinetic manifestations in weakly-collisional or even collisionless plasmas, where these instabilities are expected to contribute to the evolution of macroscopic parameters. Relatively recent studies have initiated a realistic description of FIs, as induced by the interplay of both species, electrons and protons, dominant in the solar wind plasma. This work complements the current knowledge with new insights from linear theory and the first disclosures from 2D PIC simulations, iden…
Recent studies have revealed new unstable regimes of the counter-beaming electrons specific to hot and dilute plasmas from astrophysical scenarios. The (counter-)beaming electron firehose instability (BEFI) is induced for highly oblique angles of propagation relative to the magnetic field, resembling the fast growing and aperiodic mode triggered by the temperature anisotropy. It is investigated here for space plasma conditions that includes the influence of an embedding background plasma of electrons and protons. Kinetic theory is applied to prescribe the unstable regimes, and differentiate fr…

In collision-poor plasmas from space, e.g., solar wind, terrestrial magnetospheres, kinetic instabilities are expected to play a major role in constraining the temperature anisotropy of plasma particles, but a definitive answer can be given only after ascertaining their properties in these environments. Present study describes the full spectrum of electron firehose instabilities in the presence of suprathermal electron populations which are ubiquitous in space plasmas. Suprathermal electrons stimulate both the periodic and aperiodic branches, remarkable being the effects shown by the aperiodic…

Using high-resolution data from Solar Orbiter, we investigate the plasma conditions necessary for the proton temperature anisotropy driven mirror-mode and oblique firehose instabilities to occur in the solar wind. We find that the unstable plasma exhibits dependencies on the angle between the direction of the magnetic field and the bulk solar wind velocity which cannot be explained by the double-adiabatic expansion of the solar wind alone. The angle dependencies suggest that perpendicular heating in Alfvénic wind may be responsible. We quantify the occurrence rate of the two instabilities as a…
Important efforts are currently made for understanding the so-called kinetic instabilities, driven by the anisotropy of different species of plasma particles present in the solar wind and terrestrial magnetosphere. These instabilities are fast enough to efficiently convert the free energy of plasma particles into enhanced (small-scale) fluctuations with multiple implications, regulating the anisotropy of plasma particles. In this paper we use both linear and quasilinear (QL) frameworks to describe complex unstable regimes, which realistically combine different temperature anisotropies of elect…
The electrons are an essential particle species in the solar wind. They often exhibit non-equilibrium features in their velocity distribution function. These include temperature anisotropies, tails (kurtosis), and reflectional asymmetries (skewness), which contribute a significant heat flux to the solar wind. If these non-equilibrium features are sufficiently strong, they drive kinetic micro-instabilities. We develop a semi-graphical framework based on the equations of quasi-linear theory to describe electron-driven instabilities in the solar wind. We apply our framework to resonant instabilit…

In collision-poor space plasmas protons with an excess of kinetic energy or temperature in direction perpendicular to background magnetic field can excite the electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) instability. This instability is expected to be highly sensitive to suprathermal protons, which enhance the high-energy tails of the observed velocity distributions and are well reproduced by the (bi-)Kappa distribution functions. In this paper we present the results of a refined quasilinear (QL) approach, able to describe the effects of suprathermal protons on the extended temporal evolution of EMIC …
Differential flows among different ion species are often observed in the solar wind, and such ion differential flows can provide the free energy to drive Alfvén/ion-cyclotron and fast-magnetosonic/whistler instabilities. Previous works mainly focused on ion beam instability under the parameters representative of the solar wind nearby 1 au. In this paper we further study proton beam instability using the radial models of the magnetic field and plasma parameters in the inner heliosphere. We explore a comprehensive distribution of proton beam instability as functions of the heliocentric distance …

Relative drifts between different species or particle populations are characteristic to solar plasma outflows, e.g., in the fast streams of the solar winds, coronal mass ejections and interplanetary shocks. This paper characterizes the dispersion and stability of the low-beta alpha/proton drifts in the absence of any intrinsic thermal anisotropies, which are usually invoked in order to stimulate various instabilities. The dispersion relations derived here describe the full spectrum of instabilities and their variations with the angle of propagation and plasma parameters. The results unveil a p…
An alternative mechanism is proposed for the generation of harmonics of the electron plasma frequency due to the development of explosive instability in a system of interpenetrating electron and proton flows in the solar atmosphere. The efficiency of the new mechanism in comparison with the earlier discussed mechanisms involving multistage processes of nonlinear interaction of waves in plasma is determined. It is shown that the development of explosive instability can lead to the excitation of the second and third harmonics of the plasma frequency with comparable amplitudes.

A generation mechanism of super Alfvénic (SPA) waves in multi-ion species plasma is proposed and the associated heavy ion acceleration process is discussed. The SPA waves are thought to play important roles in particle acceleration since they have large wave electric field because of their high phase velocity. It is demonstrated by using full particle-in-cell simulation that large amplitude proton cyclotron waves, excited due to proton temperature anisotropy, nonlinearly destabilize SPA waves through parametric decay instability in a three component plasma composed of electrons, protons, and $…
