Despite the recent success of identifying experimental signatures of the orbital Hall effect (OHE), the research on the microscopic mechanisms behind this unique phenomenon is still in its infancy. Here, using a gapped 2D Dirac material as a model system of the OHE, we develop a microscopic theory of orbital transport which captures extrinsic disorder effects non-perturbatively. We show that it predicts several hitherto unknown effects, including (i) a strong dependence of the orbital Hall conductivity with the strength and symmetry of the impurity scattering potential, and (ii) a smooth crossover from intrinsic to extrinsic OHE as a function of the Fermi energy and impurity density. In contrast to previous (perturbative) studies, the OHE is found to exhibit bona fide diffusive behavior in the dilute impurity limit, which we trace back to the dominance of skew scattering-type processes. More generally, we argue that the newly unveiled orbital skew scattering mechanism governs the diffusive OHEs of a large class of 2D materials even when the crystal structure is inversion-symmetric. Our work unveils the crucial nature of non-perturbative vertex corrections for a complete description of orbital transport and confirms common short-range impurities as key enablers of the OHE.
The kinetics of the extrinsic spin Hall conductivity induced by the skew scattering is performed from the fully microscopic kinetic spin Bloch equation approach in $(001)$ GaAs symmetric quantum well. In the steady state, the extrinsic spin Hall current/conductivity vanishes for the linear-$\mathbf k$ dependent spin-orbit coupling and is very small for the cubic-$\mathbf k$ dependent spin-orbit coupling. The spin precession induced by the Dresselhaus/Rashba spin-orbit coupling plays a very important role in the vanishment of the extrinsic spin Hall conductivity in the steady state. An in-plane…
We present a theoretical study of diffusive superconducting systems with extrinsic spin-orbit coupling and arbitrarily strong impurity potential. We derive from a microscopic Hamiltonian a diffusion equation for the quasi-classical Green function, and demonstrate that all mechanisms related to the spin-orbit coupling are expressed in terms of three kinetic coefficients: the spin Hall angle, the spin current swapping coefficient, and the spin relaxation rate due to Elliott-Yafet mechanism. The derived diffusion equation contains a hitherto unknown term describing a spin-orbit torque that appear…
We show that the extrinsic spin Hall effect can be engineered in monolayer graphene by decoration with small doses of adatoms, molecules, or nanoparticles originating local spin-orbit perturbations. The analysis of the single impurity scattering problem shows that intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit local couplings enhance the spin Hall effect via skew scattering of charge carriers in the resonant regime. The solution of the transport equations for a random ensemble of spin-orbit impurities reveals that giant spin Hall currents are within the reach of the current state of the art in device fabrica…
Recent experimental observations of unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivities, $κ_H$, in insulating materials, including the parent compounds of the high temperature superconducting cuprates, likely reflect an extrinsic contribution from a yet to be identified extrinsic source of skew scattering of acoustic phonons. We show that resonant scattering of phonons from a certain class of three-level systems produces strong skew scattering in the presence of a modest magnetic field. We interpret this as a first step towards understanding the experiments.
We present a rigorous microscopic theory of the extrinsic spin Hall effect in disordered graphene based on a nonperturbative quantum diagrammatic treatment incorporating skew scattering and anomalous---impurity concentration-independent---quantum corrections on equal footing. The leading skew scattering contribution to the spin Hall conductivity is shown to quantitatively agree with Boltzmann transport theory over a wide range of parameters. Our self-consistent approach---where all topologically equivalent noncrossing diagrams are resummed---unveils that the skewness generated by spin--orbit-a…
We develop the microscopic theory of the extrinsic spin Hall conductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas, including skew-scattering, side-jump, and Coulomb interaction effects. We find that while the spin-Hall conductivity connected with the side-jump is independent of the strength of electron-electron interactions, the skew-scattering term is reduced by the spin-Coulomb drag, so the total spin current and the total spin-Hall conductivity are reduced for typical experimental mobilities. Further, we predict that in paramagnetic systems the spin-Coulomb drag reduces the spin accumulations in …
We study the intrinsic and extrinsic Hall effects in disordered magnetic Weyl semimetals numerically. We show that in Weyl metals, where the Fermi energy deviates from the Weyl point, the Hall and longitudinal conductances exhibit a specific relation, which is distinguished from the well-known relation in integer quantum Hall systems. Around the Weyl point, the Hall conductance increases with increasing longitudinal conductance. This increasing behavior indicates the existence of additional contributions to the Hall conductance from the subbands of Weyl cones besides that from the bulk Berry c…
We investigate the spin Hall effect (SHE) of electrons described by the Dirac equation, which is used as an effective model near the $L$-points in bismuth. By considering short-range nonmagnetic impurities, we calculate the extrinsic as well as intrinsic contributions on an equal footing. The vertex corrections are taken into account within the ladder type and the so-called skew-scattering type. The intrinsic SHE which we obtain is consistent with that of Fuseya et al. [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 81, 93704 (2012)]. It is found that the extrinsic contribution dominates the intrinsic one when the system…
We investigate the extrinsic spin Hall effect in the electron gas model due to magnetic impurities, by focusing on Ce- and Yb-impurities. In the dilute limit, the skew scattering term dominates the side jump term. For Ce-impurities, the spin Hall angle $α_{\rm SH}$ due to skew scattering is given by $-8π\sinδ_2/7$, where $δ_2 (\ll 1)$ is the phase shift for$d (l=2)$ partial wave. Since $α_{\rm SH}$ reaches $O(10^{-1})$ if $δ_2 \simge 0.03$, the spin Hall effect is anticipated to be considerable in metals with rare-earth impurities. The giant extrinsic SHE originates from the large orbital angu…
We investigate the extrinsic spin Hall effect in the electron gas model due to transition-metal impurities based on the single-impurity Anderson model with orbital degrees of freedom. Both the skew scattering and side jump mechanisms are analyzed in a unified way, and the significant role of orbital degrees of freedom are clarified. The obtained spin Hall conductivities are in proportion to the spin-orbit polarization at the Fermi level ($R = <l \cdot s>$) as is the case with the intrinsic spin Hall effect: skew scattering term $σ^{ss} ~ R δ_1/ρ$, and side jump term $σ^{sj} ~ R$, where $δ_1$ i…
We present the analytical description of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in a 2DEG ferromagnet within the Keldysh formalism. These results unify all three linear response approaches to anomalous Hall transport and close a long standing debate. We are able to identify a new extrinsic AHE regime dominated by a hybrid skew scattering mechanism. This new contribution is inversely proportional to the impurity concentration, resembling the normal skew scattering, {\em but} independent of the impurity-strength, resembling the side-jump mechanism. Within the Kubo formalism this regime is captured by h…
We report the observation of the crossover between the extrinsic and intrinsic spin Hall effect induced by alloying. We found that the spin Hall angle, the ratio of the spin Hall conductivity to the electric conductivity, changes drastically by tuning the composition of Au-Cu alloy. The spin Hall angle changes the sign only in a limited range of the Cu concentration due to the extrinsic skew scattering, while the intrinsic contribution becomes dominant with increasing the Cu concentration. This observation provides essential information for fundamental understanding of spin-orbit physics.
We show that shot noise in a diffusive ferromagnetic wire connected by tunnel contacts to two ferromagnetic electrodes can probe the intrinsic density of states and the extrinsic impurity scattering spin-polarization contributions in the polarization of the wire conductivity. The effect is more pronounced when the electrodes are perfectly polarized in opposite directions. While in this case the shot noise has a weak dependence on the impurity scattering polarization, it is strongly affected by the polarization of the density of states. For a finite spin-flip scattering rate the shot noise incr…
The anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic metals is classified into two based on the mechanism. The first one is the intrinsic Hall effect due to the Berry curvature in momentum space; this is a Hall effect that solely arises from the band structure of solids. On the other hand, another contribution to the Hall effect, so-called extrinsic mechanism, comes from impurity scatterings such as skew scattering and side jump; for the extrinsic mechanism, the spin-orbit interaction of the impurity ions is often required. These two mechanisms are often discussed separately; the intrinsic Hall effect i…
The spin accumulation due to the spin current induced by the perpendicular temperature gradient (the spin Nernst effect) is studied in a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) with spin-orbit interaction by employing the Boltzmann equation. The considered 2DES is confined within a symmetric quantum well with delta doping at the center of the well. A symmetry consideration leads to the spin-orbit interaction which is diagonal in the spin component perpendicular to the 2DES. As origins of the spin current, the skew scattering and the side jump are considered at each impurity on the center plane …
We study the extrinsic spin Hall effect induced by Ir impurities in Cu by injecting a pure spin current into a CuIr wire from a lateral spin valve structure. While no spin Hall effect is observed without Ir impurity, the spin Hall resistivity of CuIr increases linearly with the impurity concentration. The spin Hall angle of CuIr, $(2.1 \pm 0.6)$% throughout the concentration range between 1% and 12%, is practically independent of temperature. These results represent a clear example of predominant skew scattering extrinsic contribution to the spin Hall effect in a nonmagnetic alloy.
We consider an extrinsic contribution to the anomalous and spin Hall effect in dilute alloys based on Fe, Co, Ni, and Pt hosts with different substitutional impurities. It is shown that a strong skew-scattering mechanism is absent in such crystals with multi-sheeted Fermi surfaces. Based on this finding, we conclude on the mutual exclusion of strong intrinsic and skew-scattering contributions to the considered transport phenomena. It also allows us to draw general conditions for materials where the anomalous Hall effect caused by the skew scattering can be achieved giant.
A diversity of spin Hall effects in metallic systems is known to rely on Mott skew scattering. In this work its high-temperature counterpart, phonon skew scattering, which is expected to be of foremost experimental relevance, is investigated. In particular, the phonon skew scattering spin Hall conductivity is found to be practically $T$-independent for temperatures above the Debye temperature $T_D$. As a consequence, in Rashba-like systems a high-$T$ linear behavior of the spin Hall angle demonstrates the dominance of extrinsic spin-orbit scattering only if the intrinsic spin splitting is smal…
We study the effect of anisotropy of the Rashba coupling on the extrinsic spin Hall effect due to spin-orbit active adatoms on graphene. In addition to the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, a generalized anisotropic Rashba coupling arising from the breakdown of both mirror and hexagonal symmetries of pristine graphene is considered. We find that Rashba anisotropy can strongly modify the dependence of the spin Hall angle on carrier concentration. Our model provides a simple and general description of the skew scattering mechanism due to the spin-orbit coupling that is induced by proximity to large…
A unified theory of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is presented for multi-band ferromagnetic metallic systems with dilute impurities. In the clean limit, the AHE is mostly due to the extrinsic skew-scattering. When the Fermi level is located around anti-crossing of band dispersions split by spin-orbit interaction, the intrinsic AHE to be calculated ab initio is resonantly enhanced by its non-perturbative nature, revealing the extrinsic-to-intrinsic crossover which occurs when the relaxation rate is comparable to the spin-orbit interaction energy.
We provide a theoretical framework for the electric field control of the electron spin in systems with diffusive electron motion. The approach is valid in the experimentally important case where both intrinsic and extrinsic spin-orbit interaction in a two-dimensional electron gas are present simultaneously. Surprisingly, even when the extrinsic mechanism is the dominant driving force for spin Hall currents, the amplitude of the spin Hall conductivity may be considerably tuned by varying the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling via a gate voltage. Furthermore we provide an explanation of the experimen…
We have considered the effect of different spin-orbit interaction mechanisms on the process of demagnetization under the influence of short-pulse lasers. All-optical magnetization reversal of perpendicularly magnetized thin films can occur if there are sufficient strong spin-Hall, skew scattering, and Rashba interactions. In the presence of spin-orbit interactions, the transient charge currents provide the generation of transverse-spin currents and accumulations, which eventually exert spin-transfer torque on the magnetization. By combining the optically excited spin-dependent diffusive transp…
Motivated by recent experiments on the phonon contribution to the thermal Hall effect in the cuprates, we present an analysis of chiral phonon transport. We assume the chiral behavior arises from a non-zero phonon Hall vicosity, which is likely induced by the coupling to electrons. Phonons with a non-zero phonon Hall viscosity have an intrinsic thermal Hall conductivity, but Chen et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 167601 (2020)) have argued that a significantly larger thermal Hall conductivity can arise from an extrinsic contribution which is inversely proportional to the density of impurities. We …
We present a comprehensive quasiclassical approach for studying transport properties of superconducting diffusive hybrid structures in the presence of extrinsic spin-orbit coupling. We derive a generalized Usadel equation and boundary conditions that in the normal state reduce to the drift-diffusion theory governing the spin-Hall effect in inversion symmetric materials. These equations predict the non-dissipative spin-galvanic effect, that is the generation of supercurrents by a spin-splitting field, and its inverse -- the creation of magnetic moment by a supercurrent. These effects can be see…
A key step towards dissipationless transport devices is the quantum anomalous Hall effect, which is characterized by an integer quantized Hall conductance in a ferromagnetic insulator with strong spin-orbit coupling. In this work, the anomalous Hall effect due to the impurity scattering, namely the extrinsic anomalous Hall effect, is studied when the Fermi energy crosses with the topologically nontrivial conduction band of a quantum anomalous Hall system. Two major extrinsic contributions, the side-jump and skew-scattering Hall conductivities, are calculated using the diagrammatic techniques i…
Recent reports of spin-orbit coupling enhancement in chemically modified graphene have opened doors to studies of the spin Hall effect with massless chiral fermions. Here, we theoretically investigate the interaction and impurity density dependence of the extrinsic spin Hall effect in spin-orbit coupled graphene. We present a nonperturbative quantum diagrammatic calculation of the spin Hall response function in the strong-coupling regime that incorporates skew scattering and anomalous impurity density-independent contributions on equal footing. The spin Hall conductivity dependence on Fermi en…
We consider spin and charge flow in normal metals. We employ the Keldysh formalism to find transport equations in the presence of spin-orbit interaction, interaction with magnetic impurities, and non-magnetic impurity scattering. Using the quasiclassical approximation, we derive diffusion equations which include contributions from skew scattering, side-jump scattering and the anomalous spin-orbit induced velocity. We compute the magnitude of various spin Hall effects in experimental relevant geometries and discuss when the different scattering mechanisms are important.
We propose a new scaling law for anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic thin films by distinguishing three scattering sources, namely, bulk impurity, phonon, and more importantly a rough surface. This new scaling law fits the recent experimental data excellently with constant coefficients that are independent of temperature and film thickness. This is in stark constrast with previous scaling laws that use temperature/thickness dependent fitting coefficients, and is a strong indicator that this law captures the essential physics. By intepretating the experiments for Fe, Co, and Ni with this new…
The spin-Hall effect has recently attracted a lot of attention and a central question is whether the effect is due to the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction or due to spin-asymmetric scattering by extrinsic impurities. The objective of this paper is to shed light on this question using a new approach based on the non-equilibrium Green function (NEGF) formalism, which allows us to go continuously from the ballistic to the diffusive limit and we present approximate analytical expressions that describe our results fairly well. Our model suggests that a spin accumulation proportional to the current …
A complete set of the generalized drift-diffusion equations for a coupled charge and spin dynamics in ferromagnets in the presence of extrinsic spin-orbit coupling is derived from the quantum kinetic approach, covering major transport phenomena, such as the spin and anomalous Hall effects, spin swapping, spin precession and relaxation processes. We argue that the spin swapping effect in ferromagnets is enhanced due to spin polarization, while the overall spin texture induced by the interplay of spin-orbital and spin precessional effects displays a complex spatial dependence that can be exploit…
Charge-to-spin conversion in inhomogeneous systems is studied theoretically. We consider free electrons subject to impurities with spin-orbit interaction and with spatially modulated distribution, and calculate spin accumulation and spin current induced by an external electric field. It is found that the spin accumulation is induced by the vorticity of electron flow through the side-jump and skew-scattering processes, and the differences of the two processes are discussed. The results can be put in a form of generalized spin diffusion equation with a spin source term given by the divergence of…
We measure and analyze the effective spin Hall angle of platinum in the low residual resistivity regime by second harmonic measurements of the spin-orbit torques for a multilayer of Pt/Co/AlO$_x$. An angular dependent study of the torques allows us to extract the effective spin Hall angle responsible for the damping-like torque in the system. We observe a strikingly non-monotonic and reproducible temperature dependence of the torques. This behavior is compatible with recent theoretical predictions which include both intrinsic and extrinsic (impurities and phonons) contributions to the spin Hal…
Anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) is a ubiquitous and versatile probe of magnetic order in contemporary spintronics research. Its origins are usually ascribed to extrinsic effects (i.e. spin-dependent electron scattering), whereas intrinsic (i.e. scattering-independent) contributions are neglected. Here, we measure AMR of polycrystalline thin films of the standard ferromagnets Co, Ni, Ni81Fe19 and Ni50Fe50 over the frequency range from DC to 28 THz. The large bandwidth covers the regimes of both diffusive and ballistic intraband electron transport and, thus, allows us to separate extrinsic a…
We calculate the anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ of the surface states {in cubic topological Kondo insulators}. We consider a generic model for the surface states with three Dirac cones on the (001) surface. The Fermi velocity, the Fermi momentum and the Zeeman energy in different Dirac pockets may be unequal. The microscopic impurity potential mediates mixed intra and interband extrinsic scattering processes. Our calculation of $σ_{xy}$ is based on the Kubo-Streda diagrammatic approach. It includes diffractive skew scattering contributions originating from the rare two-impurity complexes…
We analyze the thermoelectric response of Dirac and Weyl semimetals using the semiclassical approach, focusing on the extrinsic contributions due to skew-scattering and side jump. Our results apply to linear response Nernst effect in ferromagnetic Dirac materials such as Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ and to second order response of monolayer graphene on hBN with trigonal warping. Our analysis indicates that the extrinsic contributions can be a significant component of anomalous Nernst response and used to explain an enhanced thermoelectric response.
Here, we study diffusive spin transport in two dimensions and demonstrate that an intrinsic analog to a previously predicted extrinsic spin swapping effect, where the spin polarization and the direction of flow are interchanged due to spin-orbit coupling at extrinsic impurities, can be induced by intrinsic (Rashba) spin-orbit coupling. The resulting accumulation of intrinsically spin-swapped polarizations is shown to be much larger than for the extrinsic effect. Intrinsic spin swapping is particularly strong when the system dimensions exceed the spin-orbit precession length and the generated t…
We calculate the temperature dependent anomalous ac Hall conductance $σ_H(Ω, T)$ for a two-dimensional chiral p-wave superconductor. This quantity determines the polar Kerr effect, as it was observed in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ [J. Xia $et$ $al.$, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 167002 (2006)]. We concentrate on a single band model with arbitrary isotropic dispersion relation subjected to rare, weak impurities treated in the Born approximation. As we explicitly show by detailed computation, previously omitted contributions to extrinsic part of an anomalous Hall response, physically originating from diffractive skew…
Skew scattering of electrons induced by a spin cluster is studied theoretically focusing on metals with localized magnetic moments. The scattering probability is calculated by a non-perturbative $T$ matrix method; this method is valid for arbitrary strength of electron-spin coupling. We show the scattering of electrons by a three-spin cluster produces a skew angle of order $0.1π$ rad when the electron-spin coupling is comparable to the bandwidth. This is one or two orders of magnitude larger than the usual skew angle by an impurity with spin-orbit interaction. Systematic analysis of the scatte…
We incorporate quantum size effect to investigate the extrinsic spin-Hall effect in ultrathin metal films. A Lippmann-Schwinger formalism based theoretical method, accounting for quantum confinement and surface roughness scattering, is developed to calculate both spin-Hall and longitudinal resistivities and spin-Hall angle. The presence of quantum confinement gives rise to a linear relation $ρ_{sH}=αρ+β$ between the extrinsic spin-Hall resistivity $ρ_{sH}$ and longitudinal charge resistivity $ρ$. The linear term $αρ$ originates from side jump, and the constant $β$ is due to skew scattering. Th…
A first-principles description of the spin Nernst effect, denoting the occurrence of a transverse spin current due to a temperature gradient, is presented. The approach, based on an extension to the Kubo-Streda equation for spin transport, supplies in particular the formal basis for investigations of diluted as well as concentrated alloys. Results for corresponding applications to the alloy system Au-Cu give the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the relevant transport coefficients. Using scaling laws allows in addition to split the extrinsic contribution into its skew scattering and sid…
We develop a theory of extrinsic spin currents in semiconductors, resulting from spin-orbit coupling at charged scatterers, which leads to skew scattering and side jump contributions to the spin Hall conductance. Applying the theory to bulk n-GaAs, without any free parameters, we find spin currents that are in reasonable agreement with recent experiments by Kato et al. [Science 306, 1910 (2004)].

We have studied the spin transport and the spin Hall effect as a function of temperature for platinum (Pt) and gold (Au) in lateral spin valve structures. First, by using the spin absorption technique, we extract the spin diffusion length of Pt and Au. Secondly, using the same devices, we have measured the spin Hall conductivity and analyzed its evolution with temperature to identify the dominant scattering mechanisms behind the spin Hall effect. This analysis confirms that the intrinsic mechanism dominates in Pt whereas extrinsic effects are more relevant in Au. Moreover, we identify and quan…
