We prove the stability of $L^{1}$ self-similar profiles under the hard-to-Maxwell potential limit
for the one-dimensional inelastic Boltzmann equation with moderately hard potentials which, in
turn, leads to the uniqueness of such profiles for hard potentials collision kernels of the form $|\cdot|^γ$
with $γ>0$ sufficiently small (explicitly quantified). Our result provides the first
uniqueness statement for self-similar profiles of inelastic
Boltzmann models allowing for strong inelasticity besides the
explicitly solvable case of Maxwell interactions (corresponding to
$γ=0$). Our approach relies on a perturbation argument from the
corresponding Maxwell model and a careful study of the
associated linearized operator recently derived in the companion paper \cite{maxwel}. The results can be seen as a
first step towards a complete proof, in the one-dimensional setting, of
a conjecture in \cite{ernst} regarding the determination of the
long-time behaviour of solutions to inelastic Boltzmann equation, at least, in a regime of moderately hard potentials.
We consider the spatially inhomogeneous non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with moderately soft potentials and any singularity parameter $s\in (0,1)$, i.e. with $γ+2s\in(0,2]$ on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^3$. We prove that if the initial data $f_{\text{in}}$ are close to the vacuum solution $f_{\text{vac}}=0$ in an appropriate weighted norm then the solution $f$ remains regular globally in time and approaches a solution to a linear transport equation. Our proof uses $L^2$ estimates and we prove a multitude of new estimates involving the Boltzmann kernel without angular cut-off. Moreover, we rely …
We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres (with constant restitution coefficient $α\in (0,1)$) under the thermalization induced by a host medium with a fixed Maxwellian distribution. We prove that the solution to the associated initial-value problem converges exponentially fast towards the unique equilibrium solution. The proof combines a careful spectral analysis of the linearised semigroup as well as entropy estimates. The trend towards equilibrium holds in the weakly inelastic regime in which $α$ is close to $1$, and the rate of convergence is expli…
We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard-spheres (with constant restitution coefficient $α\in (0,1)$) under the thermalization induced by a host medium with a fixed Maxwellian distribution. We prove uniqueness of the stationary solution (with given mass) in the weakly inelastic regime; i.e., for any inelasticity parameter $α\in (α_0,1)$, with some constructive $α_0 \in [0, 1)$. Our analysis is based on a perturbative argument which uses the knowledge of the stationary solution in the elastic limit and quantitative estimates of the convergence of stationary so…
We derive the 3D spatially homogeneous Boltzmann's equation with moderately soft potentials and singular angular interaction, from an interacting particles system. The collision kernel is of the form $B(z,σ)=|z|^γb\left( \frac{z}{|z|}\cdot σ\right)$ and for $K>0$, $\sin(θ)b\left(\cos(θ)\right)\sim Kθ^{-1-ν}$, with $γ\in (-2,-1)$ and $ν\in(1,2)$ satisfying $γ+ν>0$. We use at the particle level the regularizing effects of the grazing collisions, in order to control the singularity of the soft potential. This enables to use a classical compactness argument, and provide a qualitative convergence r…
We consider the linear dissipative Boltzmann equation describing inelastic interactions of particles with a fixed background. For the simplified model of Maxwell molecules first, we give a complete spectral analysis, and deduce from it the optimal rate of exponential convergence to equilibrium. Moreover we show the convergence to the heat equation in the diffusive limit and compute explicitely the diffusivity. Then for the physical model of hard spheres we use a suitable entropy functional for which we prove explicit inequality between the relative entropy and the production of entropy to get …
We prove uniqueness of self-similar profiles for the one-dimensional inelastic Boltzmann equation with moderately hard potentials, that is with collision kernel of the form | $\bullet$ | $γ$ for $γ$ > 0 small enough (explicitly quantified). Our result provides the first uniqueness statement for self-similar profiles of inelastic Boltzmann models allowing for strong inelasticity besides the explicitly solvable case of Maxwell interactions (corresponding to $γ$ = 0). Our approach relies on a perturbation argument from the corresponding Maxwell model through a careful study of the associated line…
We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for {\em inelastic hard spheres}, in the framework of so-called {\em constant normal restitution coefficients} $α\in [0,1]$. In the physical regime of a small inelasticity (that is $α\in [α_*,1)$ for some constructive $α_*>0$) we prove uniqueness of the self-similar profile for given values of the restitution coefficient $α\in [α_*,1)$, the mass and the momentum; therefore we deduce the uniqueness of the self-similar solution (up to a time translation). Moreover, if the initial datum lies in $L^1_3$, and under some smallness condition on…
We consider solutions $f=f(t,x,v)$ to the full (spatially inhomogeneous) Boltzmann equation with periodic spatial conditions $x \in \mathbb T^d$, for hard and moderately soft potentials \emph{without the angular cutoff assumption}, and under the \emph{a priori} assumption that the main hydrodynamic fields, namely the local mass $\int\_v f(t,x,v)$ and local energy $\int\_v f(t,x,v)|v|^2$ and local entropy $\int\_v f(t,x,v) \ln f(t,x,v)$, are controlled along time. We establish quantitative estimates of \emph{propagation} in time of "pointwise polynomial moments", i.e. $\sup\_{x,v} f(t,x,v) (1+|…
The Cauchy problem for the inelastic Boltzmann equation is studied for small data. Existence and uniqueness of mild and weak solutions is obtained for sufficiently small data that lies in the space of functions bounded by Maxwellians. The technique used to derive the result is the well known iteration process of Kaniel and Shinbrot.
We show the existence of smooth stationary solutions for the inelastic Boltzmann equation under the thermalization induced by a host-medium with a fixed distribution. This is achieved by controlling the Lp-norms, the moments and the regularity of the solutions for the Cauchy problem together with arguments related to a dynamical proof for the existence of stationary states.
We consider a space-homogeneous gas of {\it inelastic hard spheres}, with a {\it diffusive term} representing a random background forcing (in the framework of so-called {\em constant normal restitution coefficients} $α\in [0,1]$ for the inelasticity). In the physical regime of a small inelasticity (that is $α\in [α_*,1)$ for some constructive $α_* \in [0,1)$) we prove uniqueness of the stationary solution for given values of the restitution coefficient $α\in [α_*,1)$, the mass and the momentum, and we give various results on the linear stability and nonlinear stability of this stationary solut…
The goal of this paper is to extend the existence result of measure-valued solution to the Boltzmann equation in elastic interaction, given by Morimoto-Wang-Yang, to the inelastic Boltzmann equation with moderately soft potentials, also as an extensive work of our preceding result in the inelastic Maxwellian molecules case. We prove the existence and uniqueness of measure-valued solution under Grad's angular cutoff assumption, as well as the existence of non-cutoff solution, for both finite and infinite energy initial datum, by a delicate compactness argument. In addition, the moments propagat…
A moderately thick spray can be described by a coupled system of equations consisting of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the Vlasov-Boltzmann equation. We investigate this kind of mathematical model in this paper. In particular, we study the initial value problem for the Navier-Stokes-Vlasov-Boltzmann equations. The existence of global weak solutions is established by a weak convergence method. The interesting point of our main result is to handle the model with some breakup effects while the velocity of particles is in the whole space.
We establish pointwise polynomial decay estimates in velocity space for the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without cutoff, in the case of hard potentials ($γ+2s > 2$), under the assumption that the mass, energy, and entropy densities are bounded above, and the mass density is bounded below. These estimates are self-generating, i.e. they do not require corresponding decay assumptions on the initial data. Our results extend the recent work of Imbert-Mouhot-Silvestre (arXiv:1804.06135), which addressed the case of moderately soft potentials ($γ+ 2s \in [0,2]$).
We consider the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard-spheres, with constant restitution coefficient $α\in(0,1)$, under the thermalization induced by a host medium with a fixed Maxwellian distribution and any fixed $e\in(0,1]$. When the restitution coefficient $α$ is close to 1 we prove existence and uniqueness of global solutions considering the close-to-equilibrium regime. We also study the long-time behaviour of these solutions and prove a convergence to equilibrium with an exponential rate.
We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres, in the framework of so-called constant normal restitution coefficients. We prove the existence of self-similar solutions, and we give pointwise estimates on their tail. We also give general estimates on the tail and the regularity of generic solutions. In particular we prove Haff 's law on the rate of decay of temperature, as well as the algebraic decay of singularities. The proofs are based on the regularity study of a rescaled problem, with the help of the regularity properties of the gain part of the Boltzm…
We show that the Euclidean Wasserstein distance is contractive for inelastic homogeneous Boltzmann kinetic equations in the Maxwellian approximation and its associated Kac-like caricature. This property is as a generalization of the Tanaka theorem to inelastic interactions. Consequences are drawn on the asymptotic behavior of solutions in terms only of the Euclidean Wasserstein distance.
We develop the Cauchy theory of the spatially homogeneous inelastic Boltzmann equation for hard spheres, for a general form of collision rate which includes in particular variable restitution coefficients depending on the kinetic energy and the relative velocity as well as the sticky particles model. We prove (local in time) non-concentration estimates in Orlicz spaces, from which we deduce weak stability and existence theorem. Strong stability together with uniqueness and instantaneous appearance of exponential moments are proved under additional smoothness assumption on the initial datum, fo…
We prove an inequality on the Kantorovich-Rubinstein distance --which can be seen as a particular case of a Wasserstein metric-- between two solutions of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff, but with a moderate angular singularity. Our method is in the spirit of [7]. We deduce some well-posedness and stability results in the physically relevant cases of hard and moderately soft potentials. In the case of hard potentials, we relax the regularity assumption of [6], but we need stronger assumptions on the tail of the distribution (namely some exponential decay). We…
We prove the propagation of regularity, uniformly in time, for the scaled solutions of one-dimensional dissipative Maxwell models. This result together with the weak convergence towards the stationary state proven by Pareschi and Toscani in 2006 implies the strong convergence in Sobolev norms and in the L^1 norm towards it depending on the regularity of the initial data. In the case of the one-dimensional inelastic Boltzmann equation, the result does not depend of the degree of inelasticity. This generalizes a recent result of Carlen, Carrillo and Carvalho (arXiv:0805.1051v1), in which, for we…

In this work, we are interested in the spectrum of the diffusively excited granular gases equation, in a space inhomogeneous setting, linearized around an homogeneous equilibrium. We perform a study which generalizes to a non-hilbertian setting and to the inelastic case the seminal work of Ellis and Pinsky about the spectrum of the linearized Boltzmann operator. We first give a precise localization of the spectrum, which consists in an essential part lying on the left of the imaginary axis and a discrete spectrum, which is also of nonnegative real part for small values of the inelasticity para…
The study of positivity of solutions to the Boltzmann equation goes back to Carleman (1933), and the initial argument of Carleman was developed byPulvirenti-Wennberg (1997), the second author and Briant (2015). The appearance of a lower bound with Gaussian decay had however remained an open question for long-range interactions (the so-called non-cutoff collision kernels). We answer this question and establish such Gaussian lower bound for solutions to the Boltzmann equation without cutoff, in the case of hard and moderately soft potentials, with spatial periodic conditions, and under the sole …
We study the high-energy asymptotics of the steady velocity distributions for model systems of granular media in various regimes. The main results obtained are integral estimates of solutions of the hard-sphere Boltzmann equations, which imply that the velocity distribution functions $f(v)$ behave in a certain sense as $C\exp(-r|v|^s)$ for $|v|$ large. The values of $s$, which we call {\em the orders of tails}, range from $s=1$ to $s=2$, depending on the model of external forcing. The method we use is based on the moment inequalities and careful estimating of constants in the integral form of …
In this paper, we give an overview of the results established in [3] which provides the first rigorous derivation of hydrodynamic equations from the Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres in 3D. In particular, we obtain a new system of hydrodynamic equations describing granular flows and prove existence of classical solutions to the aforementioned system. One of the main issue is to identify the correct relation between the restitution coefficient (which quantifies the rate of energy loss at the microscopic level) and the Knudsen number which allows us to obtain non trivial hydrodynamic…
We introduce and discuss spatially homogeneous Maxwell-type models of the nonlinear Boltzmann equation undergoing binary collisions with a random component. The random contribution to collisions is such that the usual collisional invariants of mass, momentum and energy do not hold pointwise, even if they all hold in the mean. Under this assumption it is shown that, while the Boltzmann equation has the usual conserved quantities, it possesses a steady state with power-like tails for certain random variables. A similar situation occurs in kinetic models of economy recently considered by two of t…
We investigate in this article the long-time behaviour of the solutions to the energy-dependant, spatially-homogeneous, inelastic Boltzmann equation for hard spheres. This model describes a diluted gas composed of hard spheres under statistical description, that dissipates energy during collisions. We assume that the gas is "anomalous", in the sense that energy dissipation increases when temperature decreases. This allows the gas to cool down in finite time. We study existence and uniqueness of blow up profiles for this model, together with the trend to equilibrium and the cooling law associat…
The dynamics of dilute electrons can be modeled by the fundamental one-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system which describes mutual interactions of the electrons through collisions in the self-consistent electrostatic field. For cutoff intermolecular interactions, although there are some progress on the construction of global smooth solutions to its Cauchy problem near Maxwellians recently, the problem for the case of very soft potentials remains unsolved. By introducing a new time-velocity weighted energy method and based on some new optimal temporal decay estimates on the solution itself a…
It is challenging to perform a multiscale analysis of mesoscopic systems exhibiting singularities at the macroscopic scale. In this paper, we study the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equations $$\mathrm{St} \partial_t F + v\cdot \nabla_x F = \frac{1}{\mathrm{Kn}} Q(F ,F ) $$ toward the singular solutions of 2D incompressible Euler equations whose vorticity is unbounded $$\partial_t u + u \cdot \nabla_x u + \nabla_x p = 0,\text{div }u =0.$$ We obtain a microscopic description of the singularity through the so-called kinetic vorticity and understand its behavior in the vicinity of the macro…
In this paper, we prove some a priori stability estimates (in weighted Sobolev spaces) for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff (covering every physical collision kernels). These estimates are conditioned to some regularity estimates on the solutions, and therefore reduce the stability and uniqueness issue to the one of proving suitable regularity bounds on the solutions. We then prove such regularity bounds for a class of interactions including the so-called (non cutoff and non mollified) hard potentials and moderately soft potentials. In particular, we obtain t…
Recently linear dissipative models of the Boltzmann equation have been introduced. In this work, we consider the problem of constructiing suitable hydrodynamic approximations for such models where the mean velocity and the temperature of inelastic particles appear as independent variables.
In this paper, we consider the spatially inhomogeneous diffusively driven inelastic Boltzmann equation in different cases: the restitution coefficient can be constant or can depend on the impact velocity (which is a more physically relevant case), including in particular the case of viscoelastic hard spheres. In the weak thermalization regime, i.e. when the diffusion parameter is sufficiently small, we prove existence of global solutions considering the close-to-equilibrium regime as well as the weakly inhomogeneous regime in the case of a constant restitution coefficient. It is the very first…
In this paper, we provide the first rigorous derivation of hydrodynamic equations from the Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres with small inelasticity. The hydrodynamic system that we obtain is an incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with self-consistent forcing terms and is thus the first hydrodynamic system that properly describes rapid granular flows. To do that, we write our Boltzmann equation in nondimensional form introducing the dimensionless Knudsen number which is intended to tend to 0. The difficulties are then manyfold, the first one coming from the fact that the or…
We consider the $n$-dimensional space homogeneous Boltzmann equation for elastic collisions for variable hard potentials with Grad (angular) cutoff. We prove sharp moment inequalities, the propagation of $L^1$-Maxwellian weighted estimates, and consequently, the propagation $L^\infty$-Maxwellian weighted estimates to all derivatives of the initial value problem associated to the afore mentioned problem. More specifically, we extend to all derivatives of the initial value problem associated to this class of Boltzmann equations corresponding sharp moment (Povzner) inequalities and time propagati…
We study the Boltzmann equation for a space-homogeneous gas of inelastic hard spheres, with a diffusive term representing a random background forcing. Under the assumption that the initial datum is a nonnegative $L^2$ function, with bounded mass and kinetic energy (second moment), we prove the existence of a solution to this model, which instantaneously becomes smooth and rapidly decaying. Under a weak additional assumption of bounded third moment, the solution is shown to be unique. We also establish the existence (but not uniqueness) of a stationary solution. In addition we show that the hig…
We prove the so-called generalized Haff's law yielding the optimal algebraic cooling rate of the temperature of a granular gas described by the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic interactions with non constant restitution coefficient. Our analysis is carried through a careful study of the infinite system of moments of the solution to the Boltzmann equation for granular gases and precise Lp estimates in the selfsimilar variables. In the process, we generalize several results on the Boltzmann collision operator obtained recently for homogeneous granular gases with constant restitution …
