The present study investigates the catalytic performance of a $hg-C_{3}N_{4}$ quantum dot aimed at enhancing electrochemical water splitting, using the first-principles density functional theory. The size of the considered quantum dot lies within the range reported experimentally (2nm - 4nm) [Zhou et al. ACS Nano 9, 12480 (2015)]. The nitrogen vacancies are created in the considered $hg-C_{3}N_{4}$ structure to simulate the realistic scenario, as the presence of nitrogen and carbon defects are reported in the synthesized $hg-C_{3}N_{4}$ quantum dots. First, the structural and vibrational properties are computed to ensure the stability of the nitrogen deficient $hg-C_{3}N_{4}$ quantum dots, and subsequently, their electronic and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) properties are investigated. The calculate HER parameters, i.e., adsorption energies, Gibbs free energies, and overpotentials demonstrate that the considered $hg-C_{3}N_{4}$ quantum dot with nitrogen vacancies can be used as a moderately effective electrocatalyst for HER performance. We also considered the quantum dot to be dissolved in water and ethanol, and find that the overpotential gets drastically reduced to 16 mV for the alcohol dissolved quantum dot, while some significant reduction is seen for the aqueous solution also. As a result, this study suggests that the nitrogen-deficient $hg-C_{3}N_{4}$ quantum dots dissolved in ethanol are excellent candidates for catalysis aimed at sustainable hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting.
Hydrogen/nitrogen/oxygen defect complexes in silicon from computational searches
Point defect complexes in crystalline silicon composed of hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms are studied within density-functional theory (DFT). Ab initio Random Structure Searching (AIRSS) is used to find low-energy defect structures. We find new lowest-energy structures for several defects: the triple-oxygen defect, {3O}, triple oxygen with a nitrogen atom, {N, 3O}, triple nitrogen with an oxygen atom, {3N,O}, double hydrogen and an oxygen atom, {2H,O}, double hydrogen and oxygen atoms, {2H,2O} and four hydrogen/nitrogen/oxygen complexes, {H,N,O}, {2H,N,O}, {H,2N,O} and {H,N,2O}. We find t…
Through a series of Raman spectroscopy studies, we investigate the behaviour of hydrogen-helium and hydrogen-nitrogen mixtures at high pressure across wide ranging concentrations. We find that there is no evidence of chemical association, miscibility, nor any demixing of hydrogen and helium in the solid state up to pressures of 250 GPa at 300 K. In contrast, we observe the formation of concentration-dependent N$_2$-H$_2$ van der Waals solids, which react to form N-H bonded compounds above 50 GPa. Through this combined study, we can demonstrate that the recently claimed chemical association of …
The dissociative chemisorption of molecular nitrogen on clean lanthanide surfaces at ambient temperature and low pressure is explored. In-situ conductance measurements track the conversion from the lanthanide metals to the insulating lanthanide nitrides. A small partial pressure of oxygen ($\sim 10^{-8}$ mbar) is shown to inhibit the nitridation of lanthanides at $10^{-4}$ mbar of N$_2$. The rate of nitridation as a function of nitrogen pressure is measured at low pressure for a series of lanthanide elements, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, ytterbium and praseodymium. Exposure of the lanthani…
Niobium provides the basis for all superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities in use, however, hydrogen is readily absorbed by niobium during cavity fabrication and subsequent niobium hydride precipitation when cooled to cryogenic temperatures degrades its superconducting properties. In the last few years the addition of dopant elements such as nitrogen has been experimentally shown to significantly improve the quality factor of niobium SRF cavities. One of the contributors to Q degradation can be presence of hydrides, however, the underlying mechanisms associated with the kinetics of hydr…
In this paper we report the effect of hydrogen on the structural properties of AISI-H13 steel nitrogen-implanted samples in low oxygen partial pressure atmosphere. The samples were implanted in a high vacuum chamber by using a broad ion beam source. The H2+/N2+ ion composition of the beam was varied and the surface composition studied in situ by photoemission electron spectroscopy (XPS). The samples were also ex situ analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), including energy-dispersive spectroscopy measurements. It was found that hydrogen has the effect of modifying…
Understanding high-pressure transitions in prototypical linear diatomic molecules, such as hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, is an important objective in high-pressure physics. Recent ultrahigh-pressure study on hydrogen revealed that there exists a molecular-symmetry-breaking isostructural electronic transition in hydrogen. The pressure-induced symmetry breaking could also lead to a series of solid molecular phases in nitrogen associated with the splitting of vibron, walking a path from fluid nitrogen to molecular solids and then to polymetric nitrogen phases. However, isostructural transition …
Self-supported electrocatalysts being generated and employed directly as electrode for energy conversion has been intensively pursued in the fields of materials chemistry and energy. Herein, we report a synthetic strategy to prepare freestanding hierarchically structured, nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphitic carbon membranes functionalized with Janus-type Co/CoP nanocrystals (termed as HNDCM-Co/CoP), which were successfully applied as a highly-efficient, binder-free electrode in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Benefited from multiple structural merits, such as high degree of graphitization, …
The hybrid nanostructures of nitrogen doped carbon materials and nonprecious transition metals are among the most promising electrocatalysts to replace noble metal catalysts for renewable energy applications. However, the fundamental principles governing the catalytic activity of such hybrid materials remain elusive. Herein, we systematically explore the electrocatalytic properties of transition metals, transition metal oxides and carbides substrates covered by nitrogen-doped graphitic sheets for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Our first-principles calculations show that the graphitic sheet…
Point defects are responsible for a wide range of optoelectronic properties in materials, making it crucial to engineer their concentrations for novel materials design. However, considering the plethora of defects in co-doped semiconducting and dielectric materials and the dependence of defect formation energies on heat treatment parameters, process design based on an experimental trial and error approach is not an efficient strategy. This makes it necessary to explore computational pathways for predicting defect equilibria during heat treatments. The accumulated experimental knowledge on defe…
We have studied the interaction of water and graphene doped with nitrogen in different configurations, namely, graphitic and pyridinic nitrogen, by means of the van der Waals density functional. We found that the local nitrogen configuration plays a key role in determining the stable water configuration, while the dispersion force is responsible for the water adsorption. With the graphitic nitrogen, water prefers to orient with its oxygen toward the surface, whereas for the pyridinic nitrogen it prefers to orient with its hydrogens toward the surface, because nitrogen is positively and negativ…

This study investigates the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation on a cation-doped surface (Bi$_{x}$M$_{y}$)$_2$MoO$_6$ where (M = Fe, La, Yb) in both the orthorhombic and monoclinic configurations using a density functional theory (DFT) approach with experimentally validated model inputs. The proceeding discussion focuses on the Heyrovsky-type reactions for both the associative and dissociative reaction pathway related to nitrogen reduction. Key fundamental insight in the reduction mechanism is discussed that relates the material properties of the substitutional ions to the nitrogen and hydrogen …
Recent theoretical and experimental studies of hydrogen-rich materials at megabar pressures (i.e., >100 GPa) have led to the discovery of very high-temperature superconductivity in these materials. Lanthanum superhydride LaH$_{10}$ has been of particular focus as the first material to exhibit a superconducting critical temperature (T$_c$) near room temperature. Experiments indicate that the use of ammonia borane as the hydrogen source can increase the conductivity onset temperatures of lanthanum superhydride to as high as 290 K. Here we examine the doping effects of B and N atoms on the superc…
