Recent theoretical and experimental studies of hydrogen-rich materials at megabar pressures (i.e., >100 GPa) have led to the discovery of very high-temperature superconductivity in these materials. Lanthanum superhydride LaH$_{10}$ has been of particular focus as the first material to exhibit a superconducting critical temperature (T$_c$) near room temperature. Experiments indicate that the use of ammonia borane as the hydrogen source can increase the conductivity onset temperatures of lanthanum superhydride to as high as 290 K. Here we examine the doping effects of B and N atoms on the superconductivity of LaH$_{10}$ in its fcc (Fm-3m) clathrate structure at megabar pressures. Doping at H atomic positions strengthens the H$_{32}$ cages of the structure to give higher phonon frequencies that enhance the Debye frequency and thus the calculated T$_c$. The predicted T$_c$ can reach 288 K in LaH$_{9.985}$N$_{0.015}$ within the average high-symmetry structure at 240 GPa.
The use of high pressure to realize superconductivity in the vicinity of room temperature has a long history, much of it focused on achieving this in hydrogen rich materials. This paper provides a brief overview of the work presented at this May 2018 conference, together with background on motivation and techniques, the theoretical predictions of superconductivity in lanthanum hydride, and the subsequent experimental confirmation. Theoretical calculations using density functional based structure search methods combined with BCS type models predicted a new class of dense, hydrogen rich material…

A possibility of high, room-temperature superconductivity was predicted for metallic hydrogen in the 1960s. However, metallization and superconductivity of hydrogen are yet to be unambiguously demonstrated in the laboratory and may require pressures as high as 5 million atmospheres. Rare earth based "superhydrides" such as LaH10 can be considered a close approximation of metallic hydrogen even though they form at moderately lower pressures. In superhydrides the predominance of H-H metallic bonds and high superconducting transition temperatures bear the hallmarks of metallic hydrogen. Still, ex…
Polyhydrides offer intriguing perspectives as high-temperature superconductors. Here we report the high-pressure synthesis of a series of lanthanum-yttrium ternary hydrides: cubic hexahydride $(La,Y)H_{6}$ with a critical temperature $T_{C}$ = 237 +/- 5 K and decahydrides $(La,Y)H_{10}$ with a maximum $T_{C}$ ~${253 K}$ and an extrapolated upper critical magnetic field $B_{C2(0)}$ up to ${135 T}$ at 183 GPa. This is one of the first examples of ternary high-$T_{C}$ superconducting hydrides. Our experiments show that a part of the atoms in the structures of recently discovered ${Im3m}$-$YH_{6}$…
Lanthanum (La) is the first member of the rare-earth series of elements that has recently raised considerable interest because of its unique high-Tc superhydride LaH10. Although several studies have found superconductivity and phase transitions in metallic La, there was a lack of experimental evidence for the equation of state (EoS) and superconductivity above one megabar pressure. Here, we extend the pressure range up to 140 GPa to study EoS and superconductivity of lanthanum via electrical transport and X-ray diffraction measurements. The experimental XRD patterns point to a phase transition…
The primary mechanism governing the emergence of near-room-temperature superconductivity in superhydrides is widely accepted to be the electron-phonon interaction. If so, the temperature dependent resistance, R(T), in these materials should obey the Bloch-Grüneisen equation, where the power-law exponent, p, should be equal to the exact integer value of p=5. On the other hand, there is a well-established theoretical result that pure electron-magnon interaction should be manifested by p=3, and p=2 is the value for pure electron-electron interaction. Here we aimed to reveal the type of charge car…
Motivated by the recent claim of hot superconductivity with critical temperatures up to 550 K in La + x hydrides (arXiv:2006.03004), we investigate the high-pressure phase diagram of possible compounds that may have formed in the experiment, using first-principles calculations for evolutionary crystal structure prediction and superconductivity. Starting from the hypothesis that the observed T$_c$ may be realized by successive heating upon a pre-formed LaH$_{10}$ phase, we examine plausible ternaries of lanthanum, hydrogen and other elements present in the diamond anvil cell: boron, nitrogen, c…
Polyhydrides are a novel class of superconducting materials with extremely high critical parameters, which is very promising for applications. On the other hand, complete experimental study of the magnetic phase diagram for the best so far known superconductor, lanthanum decahydride LaH$_{10}$, encounters a serious complication because of the large upper critical magnetic field $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$(0), exceeding 120-160 T. Partial replacement of La atoms by magnetic Nd atoms results in a decrease of the upper critical field, which makes it attainable for existing pulse magnets. We found that ad…
The Fermi energy, Ef of newly discovered high-Tc superconductor MgB2 and cuprates is estimated from the measured London penetration depth using a parameter-free expression. Ef of MgB2 and more than 30 lanthanum, yttrium and mercury-based cuprates appears to be about or below 100 meV, depending on doping. There is every evidence that the remarkable low value of Ef and the strong coupling of carriers with high-frequency phonons is the cause of high Tc in all newly discovered superconductors. Taking into account that the carriers mainly reside on oxygen in cuprates, on boron in magnesium diborade…
The discovery of the first high critical temperature (Tc) transition metal diboride superconductor, MgB2 structure alpha-MoB2 under pressure with Tc up to 32 K at 100 GPa, provides new input into some unexplained aspects of electron-phonon coupling in intermetallic compounds. We establish that MoB2 is a phonon-mediated superconductor but has little in common with MgB2 (Tc=40 K at zero pressure). MoB2 is a strongly metallic, three dimensional, multi-Fermi surface material, becoming of additional interest because it displays a frequency separation of Mo and B vibrations that mirrors that of meta…
Motivated by the recent discovery of near-room temperature superconductivity in high-pressure superhydrides, we investigate from first-principles the high-pressure superconducting phase diagram of the ternary Ca-B-H system, using ab-initio evolutionary crystal structure prediction, and Density Functional Perturbation Theory. We find that below 100 GPa all stable and weakly metastable phases are insulating. This pressure marks the appearance of several new chemically-forbidden phases on the hull of stability, and the first onset of metalization in CaBH$_5$. Metallization is then gradually achie…
We investigate the superconducting ternary lithium borohydride phase diagram at pressures of 0 and 200$\,$GPa using methods for evolutionary crystal structure prediction and linear-response calculations for the electron-phonon coupling. Our calculations show that the ground state phase at ambient pressure, LiBH$_4$, stays in the $Pnma$ space group and remains a wide band-gap insulator at all pressures investigated. Other phases along the 1:1:$x$ Li:B:H line are also insulating. However, a full search of the ternary phase diagram at 200$\,$GPa revealed a metallic Li$_2$BH$_6$ phase, which is th…
