We consider a lattice of $d=6$ qudits that supports $\mathbf{D}(\mathbf{S}_3)$ non-Abelian anyons. We present a method for implementing both braiding and fusion evolutions using only the operators that create and measure anyons, without requiring additional dynamical control. This provides a minimal protocol demonstrating that $\mathbf{D}(\mathbf{S}_3)$ anyons can generate magic states, thereby establishing their universality for quantum computation. Furthermore, we show that the entire scheme can be encoded in just two qudits, offering a compact blueprint that is inherently scalable and readily implementable in current quantum platforms.
ZW-calculus is a useful graphical language for pure qubit quantum computing. It is via the translation of the completeness of ZW-calculus that the first proof of completeness of ZX-calculus was obtained. A d-level generalisation of qubit ZW-calculus (anyonic qudit ZW-calculus) has been given in [Hadzihasanovic 2017] which is universal for pure qudit quantum computing. However, the interpretation of the W spider in this type of ZW-calculus has so-called q-binomial coefficients involved, thus makes computation quite complicated. In this paper, we give a new type of qudit ZW-calculus which has ge…
Identifying necessary and sufficient conditions for universal quantum computing is a long-standing open problem for which contextuality is, perhaps, the only promising solution [Howard et al., Nature 510, 351 (2014)]. To justify this conjecture, Howard et al. showed that contextuality is equivalent to Wigner negativity for qudits, and is therefore necessary and possibly sufficient for qudit magic state distillation. Here, we reformulate magic state distillation in the language of discrete phase space, to show that any finite qudit magic state distillation routine contains bound states outside …
We prove that magic states from the Clifford hierarchy give optimal solutions for tasks involving nonlocality and entropic uncertainty with respect to Pauli measurements. For both the nonlocality and uncertainty tasks, stabilizer states are the worst possible pure states so our solutions have an operational interpretation as being highly non-stabilizer. The optimal strategy for a qudit version of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) game in prime dimensions is achieved by measuring maximally entangled states that are isomorphic to single-qudit magic states. These magic states have an appealin…
We observe that lattice surgery, a model of fault-tolerant qubit computation, generalises straightforwardly to arbitrary finite-dimensional qudits. The generalised model is based on the group algebras $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{Z}_d$ for $d \geq 2$. It still requires magic state injection for universal quantum computation. We relate the model to the ZX-calculus, a diagrammatic language based on Hopf-Frobenius algebras.
We present a constructive proof that anyonic magnetic charges with fluxes in a non-solvable finite group can perform universal quantum computations. The gates are built out of the elementary operations of braiding, fusion, and vacuum pair creation, supplemented by a reservoir of ancillas of known flux. Procedures for building the ancilla reservoir and for correcting leakage are also described. Finally, a universal qudit gate-set, which is ideally suited for anyons, is presented. The gate-set consists of classical computation supplemented by measurements of the X operator.
When the local dimension $d$ is an odd prime, the qudit Clifford group is only a 2-design, but not a 3-design, unlike the qubit counterpart. This distinction and its extension to Clifford orbits have profound implications for many applications in quantum information processing. In this work we systematically delve into general qudit Clifford orbits with a focus on the third moments and potential applications in shadow estimation. First, we introduce the shadow norm to quantify the deviations of Clifford orbits from 3-designs and clarify its properties. Then, we show that the third normalized f…
Contextuality and negativity of the Wigner function are two notions of non-classicality for quantum systems. Howard, Wallman, Veitch and Emerson proved recently that these two notions coincide for qudits in odd prime dimension. This equivalence is particularly important since it promotes contextuality as a ressource that magic states must possess in order to allow for a quantum speed-up. We propose a simple proof of the equivalence between contextuality and negativity of the Wigner function based on character theory. This simplified approach allows us to generalize this equivalence to multiple…
Hard-decision renormalization group (HDRG) decoders are an important class of decoding algorithms for topological quantum error correction. Due to their versatility, they have been used to decode systems with fractal logical operators, color codes, qudit topological codes, and non-Abelian systems. In this work, we develop a method of performing HDRG decoding which combines strenghts of existing decoders and further improves upon them. In particular, we increase the minimal number of errors necessary for a logical error in a system of linear size $L$ from $Θ(L^{2/3})$ to $Ω(L^{1-ε})$ for any $ε…
Magic state distillation is a resource intensive sub-routine for quantum computation. The ratio of noisy input states to output states with error rate at most $ε$ scales as $O(\log^γ(1/ε))$ (Bravyi and Haah, PRA 2012). In a breakthrough paper, Hastings and Haah (PRL 2018) showed that it is possible to construct distillation routines with sub-logarithmic overhead, achieving $γ\approx 0.6779$ and falsifying a conjecture that $γ$ is lower bounded by $1$. They then ask whether $γ$ can be made arbitrarily close to $0$. We answer this question in the affirmative for magic state distillation routines…
Non-stabilizer eigenstates of Clifford operators are natural candidates for endpoints of magic state distillation routines. We provide an explicit bestiary of all inequivalent non-stabilizer Clifford eigenstates for qutrits and ququints. For qutrits, there are four non-degenerate eigenstates, and two families of degenerate eigenstates. For ququints, there are eight non-degenerate eigenstates, and three families of degenerate eigenstates. Of these states, a simultaneous eigenvector of all Clifford symplectic rotations known as the qutrit strange state is distinguished as both the most magic qut…
Prevailing proposals for the first generation of quantum computers make use of 2-level systems, or qubits, as the fundamental unit of quantum information. However, recent innovations in quantum error correction and magic state distillation protocols demonstrate that there are advantages of using d-level quantum systems, known as \emph{qudits}, over the qubit analogues. When designing a quantum architecture, it is crucial to consider protocols for compilation, the optimal conversion of high-level instructions used by programmers into low-level instructions interpreted by the machine. In this wo…
Magic state distillation (MSD) is a purification protocol that plays a central role in fault tolerant quantum computation. Repeated iteration of the steps of a MSD protocol, generates pure single non-stabilizer states, or magic states, from multiple copies of a mixed resource state using stabilizer operations only. Thus mixed resource states promote the stabilizer operations to full universality. Magic state distillation was introduced for qubit-based quantum computation, but little has been known concerning MSD in higher dimensional qudit-based computation. Here, we describe a general approac…

Error correcting codes protect quantum information and form the basis of fault tolerant quantum computing. Leading proposals for fault-tolerant quantum computation require codes with an exceedingly rare property, a transverse non-Clifford gate. Codes with the desired property are presented for $d$-level, qudit, systems with prime $d$. The codes use $n=d-1$ qudits and can detect upto $\sim d/3$ errors. We quantify the performance of these codes for one approach to quantum computation, known as magic state distillation. Unlike prior work, we find performance is always enhanced by increasing $d$.
When visualised as an operation on the Bloch sphere, the qubit "pi-over-eight" gate corresponds to one-eighth of a complete rotation about the vertical axis. This simple gate often plays an important role in quantum information theory, typically in situations for which Pauli and Clifford gates are insufficient. Most notably, when it supplements the set of Clifford gates then universal quantum computation can be achieved. The "pi-over-eight" gate is the simplest example of an operation from the third level of the Clifford hierarchy (i.e., it maps Pauli operations to Clifford operations under co…

Ising-type non-Abelian anyons are likely to occur in a number of physical systems, including quantum Hall systems, where recent experiments support their existence. In general, non-Abelian anyons may be utilized to provide a topologically error-protected medium for quantum information processing. However, the topologically protected operations that may be obtained by braiding and measuring topological charge of Ising anyons are precisely the Clifford gates, which are not computationally universal. The Clifford gate set can be made universal by supplementing it with single-qubit pi/8-phase gate…
A central question in quantum computation is to identify the resources that are responsible for quantum speed-up. Quantum contextuality has been recently shown to be a resource for quantum computation with magic states for odd-prime dimensional qudits and two-dimensional systems with real wavefunctions. The phenomenon of state-independent contextuality poses a priori an obstruction to characterizing the case of regular qubits, the fundamental building block of quantum computation. Here, we establish contextuality of magic states as a necessary resource for a large class of quantum computation …
We show that the cost of strong simulation of quantum circuits using $t$ $T$ gate magic states exhibits non-trivial reductions on its upper bound for $t=1$, $t=2$, $t=3$, and $t=6$ with odd-prime-qudits. This agrees with previous numerical bounds found for qubits. We define simulation cost by the number of terms that require Gaussian elimination of a $t \times t$ matrix and so capture the cost of simulation methods that proceed by computing stabilizer inner products or evaluating quadratic Gauss sums. Prior numerical searchs for qubits were unable to converge beyond $t=7$. We effectively incre…
Focus is on two parties with Hilbert spaces of dimension d, i.e. "qudits". In the state space of these two possibly entangled qudits an analogue to the well known tetrahedron with the four qubit Bell states at the vertices is presented. The simplex analogue to this magic tetrahedron includes mixed states. Each of these states appears to each of the two parties as the maximally mixed state. Some studies on these states are performed, and special elements of this set are identified. A large number of them is included in the chosen simplex which fits exactly into conditions needed for teleportati…

We examine how best to design qubits for use in topological quantum computation. These qubits are topological Hilbert spaces associated with small groups of anyons. Op- erations are performed on these by exchanging the anyons. One might argue that, in order to have as many simple single qubit operations as possible, the number of anyons per group should be maximized. However, we show that there is a maximal number of particles per qubit, namely 4, and more generally a maximal number of particles for qudits of dimension d. We also look at the possibility of having topological qubits for which o…

The Clifford hierarchy is a nested sequence of sets of quantum gates critical to achieving fault-tolerant quantum computation. Diagonal gates of the Clifford hierarchy and 'nearly diagonal' semi-Clifford gates are particularly important: they admit efficient gate teleportation protocols that implement these gates with fewer ancillary quantum resources such as magic states. Despite the practical importance of these sets of gates, many questions about their structure remain open; this is especially true in the higher-dimensional qudit setting. Our contribution is to leverage the discrete Stone-v…
We find a scaling reduction in the stabilizer rank of the twelve-qubit tensored $T$ gate magic state. This lowers its asymptotic bound to $2^{\sim 0.463 t}$ for multi-Pauli measurements on $t$ magic states, improving over the best previously found bound of $2^{\sim 0.468 t}$. We numerically demonstrate this reduction. This constructively produces the most efficient strong simulation algorithm of the Clifford+$T$ gateset to relative or multiplicative error. We then examine the cost of Pauli measurement in terms of its Gauss sum rank, which is a slight generalization of the stabilizer rank and i…
To achieve universal quantum computation via general fault-tolerant schemes, stabilizer operations must be supplemented with other non-stabilizer quantum resources. Motivated by this necessity, we develop a resource theory for magic quantum channels to characterize and quantify the quantum "magic" or non-stabilizerness of noisy quantum circuits. For qudit quantum computing with odd dimension $d$, it is known that quantum states with non-negative Wigner function can be efficiently simulated classically. First, inspired by this observation, we introduce a resource theory based on completely posi…
We construct a Pauli stabilizer model for every two-dimensional Abelian topological order that admits a gapped boundary. Our primary example is a Pauli stabilizer model on four-dimensional qudits that belongs to the double semion (DS) phase of matter. The DS stabilizer Hamiltonian is constructed by condensing an emergent boson in a $\mathbb{Z}_4$ toric code, where the condensation is implemented by making certain two-body measurements. We rigorously verify the topological order of the DS stabilizer model by identifying an explicit finite-depth quantum circuit (with ancillary qubits) that maps …
