We find a scaling reduction in the stabilizer rank of the twelve-qubit tensored $T$ gate magic state. This lowers its asymptotic bound to $2^{\sim 0.463 t}$ for multi-Pauli measurements on $t$ magic states, improving over the best previously found bound of $2^{\sim 0.468 t}$. We numerically demonstrate this reduction. This constructively produces the most efficient strong simulation algorithm of the Clifford+$T$ gateset to relative or multiplicative error. We then examine the cost of Pauli measurement in terms of its Gauss sum rank, which is a slight generalization of the stabilizer rank and is a lower bound on its asymptotic scaling. We demonstrate that this lower bound appears to be tight at low $t$-counts, which suggests that the stabilizer rank found at the twelve-qubit state can be lowered further to $2^{\sim 0.449 t}$ and we prove and numerically show that this is the case for single-Pauli measurements. Our construction directly shows how the reduction at $12$ qubits is iteratively based on the reduction obtained at $6$, $3$, $2$, and $1$ qubits. This explains why novel reductions are found at tensor factors for these number of qubit primitives, an explanation lacking previously in the literature. Furthermore, in the process we observe an interesting relationship between the T gate magic state's stabilizer rank and decompositions that are Clifford-isomorphic to a computational sub-basis tensored with single-qubit states that produce minimal unique stabilizer state inner products -- the same relationship that allowed for finding minimal numbers of unique Gauss sums in the odd-dimensional qudit Wigner formulation of Pauli measurements.
Any unitary transformation can be decomposed into a product of a group of near-trivial transformations. We investigate in details the construction of universal quantum circuit of near trivial transformations. We first construct two universal quantum circuits which can implement any single-qubit rotation $R_y(θ)$ and $R_z(θ)$ within any given precision, and then we construct universal quantum circuit implementing any single-qubit transformation within any given precision. Finally, a universal quantum circuit implementing any $n$-qubit near-trivial transformation is constructed using the univers…
We propose a method of compiling that permits to identify quantum circuits able to simulate arbitrary $n$-qubit unitary operations via the adjustment of angles in single-qubit gates therein. The method of compiling itself extends older quantum control techniques and stays computationally tractable for several qubits. As an application we identify compiling universal circuits for $3$, $4$ and $5$ qubits consisting of $16$, $64$ and $ 256$ CNOTs respectively.
We consider the entanglement manipulation capabilities of the universal covariant quantum cloner or quantum processor circuit for quantum bits. We investigate its use for cloning a member of a bipartite or a genuine tripartite entangled state of quantum bits. We find that for bipartite pure entangled states a nontrivial behavior of concurrence appears, while for GHZ entangled states a possibility of the partial extraction of bipartite entanglement can be achieved.
We present a quantum circuit synthesis algorithm for implementing universal fault-tolerant quantum computing based on concatenated codes. To realize fault-tolerant quantum computing, the fault-tolerant quantum protocols should be transformed into executable quantum circuits based on the nearest-neighbor interaction. Unlike topological codes that are defined based on local operations fundamentally, for the concatenated codes, it is possible to obtain the circuits composed of the local operations by applying the quantum circuit synthesis. However, by the existing quantum circuit synthesis develo…
We propose a universal quantum circuit design that can estimate any arbitrary one-dimensional periodic functions based on the corresponding Fourier expansion. The quantum circuit contains N-qubits to store the information on the different N-Fourier components and $M+2$ auxiliary qubits with $M = \lceil{\log_2{N}}\rceil$ for control operations. The desired output will be measured in the last qubit $q_N$ with a time complexity of the computation of $O(N^2\lceil \log_2N\rceil^2)$. We illustrate the approach by constructing the quantum circuit for the square wave function with accurate results obt…
We define and construct efficient depth-universal and almost-size-universal quantum circuits. Such circuits can be viewed as general-purpose simulators for central classes of quantum circuits and can be used to capture the computational power of the circuit class being simulated. For depth we construct universal circuits whose depth is the same order as the circuits being simulated. For size, there is a log factor blow-up in the universal circuits constructed here. We prove that this construction is nearly optimal.
We provide an analytic way to implement any arbitrary two-qubit unitary operation, given an entangling two-qubit gate together with local gates. This is shown to provide explicit construction of a universal quantum circuit that exactly simulates arbitrary two-qubit operations in SU(4). Each block in this circuit is given in a closed form solution. We also provide a uniform upper bound of the applications of the given entangling gates, and find that exactly half of all the Controlled-Unitary gates satisfy the same upper bound as the CNOT gate. These results allow for the efficient implementatio…
We provide an explicit construction of a universal gate set for continuous-variable quantum computation with microwave circuits. Such a universal set has been first proposed in quantum-optical setups, but its experimental implementation has remained elusive in that domain due to the difficulties in engineering strong nonlinearities. Here, we show that a realistic three-wave mixing microwave architecture based on the SNAIL [Frattini et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 110, 222603 (2017)] allows us to overcome this difficulty. As an application, we show that this architecture allows for the generation of …
We consider the implementation of two-qubit unitary transformations by means of CNOT gates and single-qubit unitary gates. We show, by means of an explicit quantum circuit, that together with local gates three CNOT gates are necessary and sufficient in order to implement an arbitrary unitary transformation of two qubits. We also identify the subset of two-qubit gates that can be performed with only two CNOT gates.
This paper concerns the efficient implementation of quantum circuits for qudits. We show that controlled two-qudit gates can be implemented without ancillas and prove that the gate library containing arbitrary local unitaries and one two-qudit gate, CINC, is exact-universal. A recent paper (PRL 94 230502) describes quantum circuits for qudits which require O(d^n) two-qudit gates for state synthesis and O(d^{2n}) two-qudit gates for unitary synthesis, matching the respective lower bound complexities. In this work, we present the state synthesis circuit in much greater detail and prove that it i…
We test the principle of majorization [J. I. Latorre and M. A. Martin-Delgado, Phys. Rev. A 66, 022305 (2002)] in random circuits. Three classes of circuits were considered: (i) universal, (ii) classically simulatable, and (iii) neither universal nor classically simulatable. The studied families are: {CNOT, H, T}, {CNOT, H, NOT}, {CNOT, H, S} (Clifford), matchgates, and IQP (instantaneous quantum polynomial-time). We verified that all the families of circuits satisfy on average the principle of decreasing majorization. In most cases the asymptotic state (number of gates going to infinity) beha…
Quantum computation has attracted much attention, among other things, due to its potentialities to solve classical NP problems in polynomial time. For this reason, there has been a growing interest to build a quantum computer. One of the basic steps is to implement the quantum circuit able to realize a given unitary operation. This task has been solved using decomposition of unitary matrices in simpler ones till reach quantum circuits having only single-qubits and CNOTs gates. Usually the goal is to find the minimal quantum circuit able to solve a given problem. In this paper we go in a differ…
It was shown by M.A. Nielsen and I.L. Chuang 1997, that it is impossible to build strictly universal programmable quantum gate array, that could perform any unitary operation precisely and it was suggested to use probabilistic gate arrays instead. In present work is shown, that if to use more physical and weak condition of universality (suggested already in earliest work by D.Deutsch 1985) and to talk about simulation with arbitrary, but finite precision, then it is possible to build universal programmable gate array. But now the same no-go theorem by Nielsen and Chuang will have new interesti…
In this work, we propose a generalization of the current most widely used quantum computing hardware metric known as the quantum volume. The quantum volume specifies a family of random test circuits defined such that the logical circuit depth is equal to the total number of qubits used in the computation. However, such square circuit shapes do not directly relate to many specific applications for which one may wish to use a quantum computer. Based on surveying available resource estimates for known quantum algorithms, we generalize the quantum volume to a handful of representative circuit shap…
From a geometric approach, we derive the minimum number of applications needed for an arbitrary Controlled-Unitary gate to construct a universal quantum circuit. A new analytic construction procedure is presented and shown to be either optimal or close to optimal. This result can be extended to improve the efficiency of universal quantum circuit construction from any entangling gate. Specifically, for both the Controlled-NOT and Double-CNOT gates, we develop simple analytic ways to construct universal quantum circuits with three applications, which is the least possible.
Many universal reversible libraries that contain more than one gate type have been proposed in the literature. Practical implementation of reversible circuits is much easier if a single gate type is used in the circuit construction. This paper proposes a reversible n-bit gate that is universal for reversible circuits synthesis. The proposed gate is extendable according to the size of the circuit. The paper shows that the size of the synthesized circuits using the proposed gate is comparable with the size of the synthesized circuits using the hybrid reversible libraries for 3-in/out reversible …
We give quantum circuits that simulate an arbitrary two-qubit unitary operator up to global phase. For several quantum gate libraries we prove that gate counts are optimal in worst and average cases. Our lower and upper bounds compare favorably to previously published results. Temporary storage is not used because it tends to be expensive in physical implementations. For each gate library, best gate counts can be achieved by a single universal circuit. To compute gate parameters in universal circuits, we only use closed-form algebraic expressions, and in particular do not rely on matrix expone…
Bravyi and Gosset recently gave classical simulation algorithms for quantum circuits dominated by Clifford operations. These algorithms scale exponentially with the number of T-gate in the circuit, but polynomially in the number of qubits and Clifford operations. Here we extend their algorithm to qudits of odd prime dimensions. We generalize their approximate stabilizer rank method for weak simulation to qudits and obtain the scaling of the approximate stabilizer rank with the number of single-qudit magic states. We also relate the canonical form of qudit stabilizer states to Gauss sum evaluat…
Stark shift on a superconducting qubit in circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) has been used to construct universal quantum entangling gates on superconducting resonators in previous works. It is a second-order coupling effect between the resonator and the qubit in the dispersive regime, which leads to a slow state-selective rotation on the qubit. Here, we present two proposals to construct the fast universal quantum gates on superconducting resonators in a microwave-photon quantum processor composed of multiple superconducting resonators coupled to a superconducting transmon qutrit, that is,…
We study two-qubit circuits over the Clifford+CS gate set, which consists of the Clifford gates together with the controlled-phase gate CS=diag(1,1,1,i). The Clifford+CS gate set is universal for quantum computation and its elements can be implemented fault-tolerantly in most error-correcting schemes through magic state distillation. Since non-Clifford gates are typically more expensive to perform in a fault-tolerant manner, it is often desirable to construct circuits that use few CS gates. In the present paper, we introduce an efficient and optimal synthesis algorithm for two-qubit Clifford+C…
Given a quantum gate implementing a $d$-dimensional unitary operation $U_d$, without any specific description but $d$, and permitted to use $k$ times, we present a universal probabilistic heralded quantum circuit that implements the exact inverse $U_d^{-1}$, whose failure probability decays, exponentially in $k$. The protocol employs an adaptive strategy, proven necessary for the exponential performance. It requires $k\geq d-1$, proven necessary for exact implementation of $U_d^{-1}$ with quantum circuits. Moreover, even when quantum circuits with indefinite causal order are allowed, $k\geq d-…
Cat-state qubits (qubits encoded with cat states) have recently drawn intensive attention due to their enhanced life times with quantum error correction. We here propose a method to implement a universal controlled-phase gate of two cat-state qubits, via two microwave resonators coupled to a superconducting transmon qutrit. During the gate operation, the qutrit remains in the ground state; thus decoherence from the qutrit is greatly suppressed. This proposal requires only two basic operations and neither classical pulse nor measurement is needed; therefore the gate realization is simple. Numer…
Universal compilation is a training process that compiles a trainable unitary into a target unitary and it serves vast potential applications from quantum dynamic simulations to optimal circuits with deep-compressing, device benchmarking, quantum error mitigation, and so on. Here, we propose a universal compilation-based variational algorithm for the preparation and tomography of quantum states in low-depth quantum circuits. We apply the Fubini-Study distance to be a trainable cost function under various gradient-based optimizers, including the quantum natural gradient approach. We evaluate th…
No-cloning theorem forbids perfect cloning of an unknown quantum state. A universal quantum cloning machine (UQCM), capable of producing two copies of any input qubit with the optimal fidelity, is of fundamental interest and has applications in quantum information processing. This is enabled by delicately tailored nonclassical correlations between the input qubit and the copying qubits, which distinguish the UQCM from a classical counterpart, but whose experimental demonstrations are still lacking. We here implement the UQCM in a superconducting circuit, and investigate these correlations. The…
This paper addresses the problem of designing universal quantum circuits to transform $k$ uses of a $d$-dimensional unitary input-operation into a unitary output-operation in a probabilistic heralded manner. Three classes of protocols are considered, parallel circuits, where the input-operations can be simultaneously, adaptive circuits, where sequential uses of the input-operations are allowed, and general protocols, where the use of the input-operations may be performed without a definite causal order. For these three classes, we develop a systematic semidefinite programming approach that fin…
We present a systematic construction of quantum circuits implementing Grover's database search algorithm for arbitrary number of targets. We introduce a new operator which flips the sign of the targets and evaluate its circuit complexity. We find the condition under which the circuit complexity of the database search algorithm based on this operator is less than that of the conventional one.
The dynamical generation of complex correlations in quantum many-body systems is of renewed interest in the context of quantum chaos, where the out-of-time-ordered (OTO) correlation function appears as a convenient measure of scrambling. To detect the the transition from scrambling to many-body localization, the latter of which has limited dynamical complexity and is often classically simulatable, we develop both exact and approximate methods to compute OTO correlators for arbitrary universal quantum circuits. We take advantage of the mapping of quantum circuits to the dynamics of interacting …
Lithium niobate photonic circuits have the salutary property of permitting the generation, transmission, and processing of photons to be accommodated on a single chip. Compact photonic circuits such as these, with multiple components integrated on a single chip, are crucial for efficiently implementing quantum information processing schemes. We present a set of basic transformations that are useful for manipulating modal qubits in Ti:LiNbO$_3$ photonic quantum circuits. These include the mode analyzer, a device that separates the even and odd components of a state into two separate spatial pat…
Entanglement is the defining characteristic of quantum mechanics. Bipartite entanglement is characterized by the von Neumann entropy. Entanglement is not just described by a number, however; it is also characterized by its level of complexity. The complexity of entanglement is at the root of the onset of quantum chaos, universal distribution of entanglement spectrum statistics, hardness of a disentangling algorithm and of the quantum machine learning of an unknown random circuit, and universal temporal entanglement fluctuations. In this paper, we numerically show how a crossover from a simple …
Variational quantum algorithms dominate contemporary gate-based quantum enhanced optimisation, eigenvalue estimation and machine learning. Here we establish the quantum computational universality of variational quantum computation by developing two objective functions which minimise to prepare outputs of arbitrary quantum circuits. The fleeting resource of variational quantum computation is the number of expected values which must be iteratively minimised using classical-to-quantum outer loop optimisation. An efficient solution to this optimisation problem is given by the quantum circuit being…
Universal gate sets for quantum computing have been known for decades, yet no universal gate set has been proposed for particle-conserving unitaries, which are the operations of interest in quantum chemistry. In this work, we show that controlled single-excitation gates in the form of Givens rotations are universal for particle-conserving unitaries. Single-excitation gates describe an arbitrary $U(2)$ rotation on the two-qubit subspace spanned by the states $|01\rangle, |10\rangle$, while leaving other states unchanged -- a transformation that is analogous to a single-qubit rotation on a dual-…
In quantum computation every unitary operation can be decomposed into quantum circuits-a series of single-qubit rotations and a single type entangling two-qubit gates, such as controlled-NOT (CNOT) gates. Two measures are important when judging the complexity of the circuit: the total number of CNOT gates needed to implement it and the depth of the circuit, measured by the minimal number of computation steps needed to perform it. Here we give an explicit and simple quantum circuit scheme for preparation of arbitrary quantum states, which can directly utilize any decomposition scheme for arbitr…
Improving the simulation of quantum circuits on classical computers is important for understanding quantum advantage and increasing development speed. In this paper, we explore a new way to express stabilizer states and further improve the speed of simulating stabilizer circuits with a current existing approach. First, we discover a unique and elegant canonical form for stabilizer states based on graph states to better represent stabilizer states and show how to efficiently simplify stabilizer states to canonical form. Second, we develop an improved algorithm for graph state stabilizer simulat…
Universal quantum computation may be realized based on quantum walk, by formulating it as a scattering problem on a graph. In this paper, we simulate quantum gates through electric circuits, following a recent report that a one-dimensional $LC$ electric circuit can simulate a Schrödinger equation and hence a quantum walk. Especially, we propose a physical realization of a set of universal quantum gates consisting of the CNOT, Hadamard and $π/4$ phase-shift gates with the use of telegrapher wires and mixing bridges. Furthermore, we construct the $π/2^{n}$ phase-shift gate for an arbitrary integ…
Quantum computation may well be performed with the use of electric circuits. Especially, the Schrödinger equation can be simulated by the lumped-element model of transmission lines, which is applicable to low-frequency electric circuits. In this paper, we show that the Dirac equation is simulated by the distributed-element model, which is applicable to high-frequency electric circuits. Then, a set of universal quantum gates (the Hadamard, phase-shift and CNOT gates) are constructed by networks made of transmission lines. We demonstrate Shor's prime factorization based on electric circuits. It …
Clifford circuits are insufficient for universal quantum computation or creating $t$-designs with $t\ge 4$. While the entanglement entropy is not a telltale of this insufficiency, the entanglement spectrum is: the entanglement levels are Poisson-distributed for circuits restricted to the Clifford gate-set, while the levels follow Wigner-Dyson statistics when universal gates are used. In this paper we show, using finite-size scaling analysis of different measures of level spacing statistics, that in the thermodynamic limit, inserting a single T $(π/8)$ gate in the middle of a random Clifford ci…
Quantum measurement is important to quantum computing as it extracts the outcome of the circuit at the end of the computation. Previously, all measurements have to be done at the end of the circuit. Otherwise, it will incur significant errors. But it is not the case now. Recently IBM started supporting dynamic circuits through hardware (instead of software by simulator). With mid-circuit hardware measurement, we can improve circuit efficacy and fidelity from three aspects: (a) reduced qubit usage, (b) reduced swap insertion, and (c) improved fidelity. We demonstrate this using real-world appli…
The Heisenberg exchange interaction is a natural method to implement non-local (i.e., multi-qubit) quantum gates in quantum information processing. We consider quantum circuits comprising of $(SWAP)^α$ gates, which are realized through the exchange interaction, and single-qubit gates. A universal two-qubit quantum circuit is constructed from only three $(SWAP)^α$ gates and six single-qubit gates. We further show that three $(SWAP)^α$ gates are not only sufficient, but necessary. Since six single-qubit gates are known to be necessary, our universal two-qubit circuit is optimal in terms of the n…
We present a general quantum circuit design for finding eigenvalues of non-unitary matrices on quantum computers using the iterative phase estimation algorithm. In particular, we show how the method can be used for the simulation of resonance states for quantum systems.
Using geometric phases to realize noise-resilient quantum computing is an important method to enhance the control fidelity. In this work, we experimentally realize a universal nonadiabatic geometric quantum gate set in a superconducting qubit chain. We characterize the realized single- and two-qubit geometric gates with both quantum process tomography and randomized benchmarking methods. The measured average fidelities for the single-qubit rotation gates and two-qubit controlled-Z gate are 0.9977(1) and 0.977(9), respectively. Besides, we also experimentally demonstrate the noise-resilient fea…
