IVISIT is a generic interactive visual simulation tool that is based on Python/Numpy and can be used for system simulation, parameter optimization, parameter management, and visualization of system dynamics as required, for example, for developing neural network simulations, machine learning applications, or computer vision systems. It provides classes for rapid prototyping of applications and visualization and manipulation of system properties using interactive GUI elements like sliders, images, textboxes, option lists, checkboxes and buttons based on Tkinter and Matplotlib. Parameters and simulation configurations can be stored and managed based on SQLite database functions. This technical report describes the main architecture and functions of IVISIT, and provides easy examples how to rapidly implement interactive applications and manage parameter settings.
Static visualizations have analytic and expressive value. However, many interactive tasks cannot be completed using static visualizations. As datasets grow in size and complexity, static visualizations start losing their analytic and expressive power for interactive data exploration. Despite this limitation of static visualizations, there are still many cases where visualizations are limited to being static (e.g., visualizations on presentation slides or posters). We believe in many of these cases, static visualizations will benefit from allowing users to perform interactive tasks on them. Ins…
Older adults have been hit disproportionally hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. One critical way for older adults to minimize the negative impact of COVID-19 and future pandemics is to stay informed about its latest information, which has been increasingly presented through online interactive visualizations (e.g., live dashboards and websites). Thus, it is imperative to understand how older adults interact with and comprehend online COVID-19 interactive visualizations and what challenges they might encounter to make such visualizations more accessible to older adults. We adopted a user-centered ap…
Despite recent progress in artificial intelligence and machine learning, many state-of-the-art methods suffer from a lack of explainability and transparency. The ability to interpret the predictions made by machine learning models and accurately evaluate these models is crucially important. In this paper, we present an interactive visualization tool to elucidate the training process of active learning. This tool enables one to select a sample of interesting data points, view how their prediction values change at different querying stages, and thus better understand when and how active learning…
Cognitive biases are systematic errors in judgment. Researchers in data visualizations have explored whether cognitive biases transfer to decision-making tasks with interactive data visualizations. At the same time, cognitive scientists have reinterpreted cognitive biases as the product of resource-rational strategies under finite time and computational costs. In this paper, we argue for the integration of resource-rational analysis through constrained Bayesian cognitive modeling to understand cognitive biases in data visualizations. The benefit would be a more realistic "bounded rationality" …
We are working on a scalable, interactive visualization system, called Carina, for people to explore million-node graphs. By using latest web browser technologies, Carina offers fast graph rendering via WebGL, and works across desktop (via Electron) and mobile platforms. Different from most existing graph visualization tools, Carina does not store the full graph in RAM, enabling it to work with graphs with up to 69M edges. We are working to improve and open-source Carina, to offer researchers and practitioners a new, scalable way to explore and visualize large graph datasets.
Embeddings are ubiquitous in machine learning, appearing in recommender systems, NLP, and many other applications. Researchers and developers often need to explore the properties of a specific embedding, and one way to analyze embeddings is to visualize them. We present the Embedding Projector, a tool for interactive visualization and interpretation of embeddings.

We develop NL2INTERFACE to explore the potential of generating usable interactive multi-visualization interfaces from natural language queries. With NL2INTERFACE, users can directly write natural language queries to automatically generate a fully interactive multi-visualization interface without any extra effort of learning a tool or programming language. Further, users can interact with the interfaces to easily transform the data and quickly see the results in the visualizations.

We introduce an interactive image segmentation and visualization framework for identifying, inspecting, and editing tiny objects (just a few pixels wide) in large multi-megapixel high-dynamic-range (HDR) images. Detecting cosmic rays (CRs) in astronomical observations is a cumbersome workflow that requires multiple tools, so we developed an interactive toolkit that unifies model inference, HDR image visualization, segmentation mask inspection and editing into a single graphical user interface. The feature set, initially designed for astronomical data, makes this work a useful research-supporti…
Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially Neural Networks (NNs), has become increasingly popular. However, people usually treat AI as a tool, focusing on improving outcome, accuracy, and performance while paying less attention to the representation of AI itself. We present AIive, an interactive visualization of AI in Virtual Reality (VR) that brings AI "alive". AIive enables users to manipulate the parameters of NNs with virtual hands and provides auditory feedback for the real-time values of loss, accuracy, and hyperparameters. Thus, AIive contributes an artistic and intuitive way to represent…
Social media is often used by researchers as an approach to obtaining real-time data on people's activities and thoughts. Twitter, as one of the most popular social networking services nowadays, provides copious information streams on various topics and events. Mining and analyzing Tweets enable us to find public reactions and emotions to activities or objects. This paper presents an interactive visualization tool that identifies and visualizes people's emotions on any two related topics by streaming and processing data from Twitter. The effectiveness of this visualization was evaluated and de…
Dynamic networks can be challenging to analyze visually, especially if they span a large time range during which new nodes and edges can appear and disappear. Although it is straightforward to provide interfaces for visualization that represent multiple states of the network (i.e., multiple timeslices) either simultaneously (e.g., through small multiples) or interactively (e.g., through interactive animation), these interfaces might not support tasks in which disjoint timeslices need to be compared. Since these tasks are key for understanding the dynamic aspects of the network, understanding w…

With a constant increase of learned parameters, modern neural language models become increasingly more powerful. Yet, explaining these complex model's behavior remains a widely unsolved problem. In this paper, we discuss the role interactive visualization can play in explaining NLP models (XNLP). We motivate the use of visualization in relation to target users and common NLP pipelines. We also present several use cases to provide concrete examples on XNLP with visualization. Finally, we point out an extensive list of research opportunities in this field.
Modern interactive visualizations are akin to distributed systems, where user interactions, background data processing, remote requests, and streaming data read and modify the interface at the same time. This concurrency is crucial to provide an interactive user experience---forbidding it can cripple responsiveness. However, it is notoriously challenging to program distributed systems, and concurrency can easily lead to ambiguous or confusing interface behaviors. In this paper, we present DIEL, a declarative programming model to help developers reason about and reconcile concurrency-related is…
Interactive Machine Teaching systems allow users to create customized machine learning models through an iterative process of user-guided training and model assessment. They primarily offer confidence scores of each label or class as feedback for assessment by users. However, we observe that such feedback does not necessarily suffice for users to confirm the behavior of the model. In particular, confidence scores do not always offer the full understanding of what features in the data are used for learning, potentially leading to the creation of an incorrectly-trained model. In this demonstrati…
Web-based data visualizations have become very popular for exploring data and communicating insights. Newspapers, journals, and reports regularly publish visualizations to tell compelling stories with data. Unfortunately, most visualizations are inaccessible to readers with visual impairments. For many charts on the web, there are no accompanying alternative (alt) texts, and even if such texts exist they do not adequately describe important insights from charts. To address the problem, we first interviewed 15 blind users to understand their challenges and requirements for reading data visualiz…

Network analysis has been applied in diverse application domains. In this paper, we consider an example from protein dynamics, specifically residue interaction networks (RINs). In this context, we use NetworKit -- an established package for network analysis -- to build a cloud-based environment that enables domain scientists to run their visualization and analysis workflows on large compute servers, without requiring extensive programming and/or system administration knowledge. To demonstrate the versatility of this approach, we use it to build a custom Jupyter-based widget for RIN visualizati…

The COVID-19 outbreak has dramatically changed travel behavior in affected cities. The C2SMART research team has been investigating the impact of COVID-19 on mobility and sociability. New York City (NYC) and Seattle, two of the cities most affected by COVID-19 in the U.S. were included in our initial study. An all-in-one dashboard with data mining and cloud computing capabilities was developed for interactive data analytics and visualization to facilitate the understanding of the impact of the outbreak and corresponding policies such as social distancing on transportation systems. This platfor…
Recent graphical interfaces offer direct manipulation mechanisms for authoring visualizations, but are largely restricted to static output. To author interactive visualizations, users must instead turn to textual specification; but, such approaches impose a higher technical burden than their graphical counterparts. To bridge this gap, we introduce interaction design by demonstration: a novel method for authoring interaction techniques via direct manipulation. Users perform an interaction (e.g., button clicks, drags, or key presses) directly on the visualization they are editing. The system int…
As machine learning (ML) systems become increasingly widespread, it is necessary to audit these systems for biases prior to their deployment. Recent research has developed algorithms for effectively identifying intersectional bias in the form of interpretable, underperforming subsets (or slices) of the data. However, these solutions and their insights are limited without a tool for visually understanding and interacting with the results of these algorithms. We propose Visual Auditor, an interactive visualization tool for auditing and summarizing model biases. Visual Auditor assists model valid…
Visualization tools for supervised learning allow users to interpret, introspect, and gain an intuition for the successes and failures of their models. While reinforcement learning practitioners ask many of the same questions, existing tools are not applicable to the RL setting as these tools address challenges typically found in the supervised learning regime. In this work, we design and implement an interactive visualization tool for debugging and interpreting RL algorithms. Our system addresses many features missing from previous tools such as (1) tools for supervised learning often are not…
Parallel coordinate plots (PCPs) are among the most useful techniques for the visualization and exploration of high-dimensional data spaces. They are especially useful for the representation of correlations among the dimensions, which identify relationships and interdependencies between variables. However, within these high-dimensional spaces, PCPs face difficulties in displaying the correlation between combinations of dimensions and generally require additional display space as the number of dimensions increases. In this paper, we present a new technique for high-dimensional data visualizatio…

Graph data have become increasingly common. Visualizing them helps people better understand relations among entities. Unfortunately, existing graph visualization tools are primarily designed for single-person desktop use, offering limited support for interactive web-based exploration and online collaborative analysis. To address these issues, we have developed Argo Lite, a new in-browser interactive graph exploration and visualization tool. Argo Lite enables users to publish and share interactive graph visualizations as URLs and embedded web widgets. Users can explore graphs incrementally by a…
This paper introduces Polyphorm, an interactive visualization and model fitting tool that provides a novel approach for investigating cosmological datasets. Through a fast computational simulation method inspired by the behavior of Physarum polycephalum, an unicellular slime mold organism that efficiently forages for nutrients, astrophysicists are able to extrapolate from sparse datasets, such as galaxy maps archived in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and then use these extrapolations to inform analyses of a wide range of other data, such as spectroscopic observations captured by the Hubble Spac…
Soft errors have become one of the major concerns for HPC applications, as those errors can result in seriously corrupted outcomes, such as silent data corruptions (SDCs). Prior studies on error resilience have studied the robustness of HPC applications. However, it is still difficult for program developers to identify potential vulnerability to soft errors. In this paper, we present Visilence, a novel visualization tool to visually analyze error vulnerability based on the control-flow graph generated from HPC applications. Visilence efficiently visualizes the affected program states under inj…
Development processes in various engineering disciplines are incorporating formal models to ensure safety properties of critical systems. The use of these formal models requires to reason about their adequacy, i.e., to validate that a model mirrors the structure of the system sufficiently that properties established for the model indeed carry over to the real system. Model validation itself is non-formal, as adequacy is not a formal (i.e., mathematical) property. Instead it must be carried out by the modeler to justify the modeling to the certification agency or other stakeholders. In this pap…

We designed and implemented a visualization interface that leverages coordinated multi-views to support exploratory and predictive analysis of hospitalizations and other socio-geographic variables at multiple dimensions, simultaneously. By harnessing the strength of geometric deep learning, we build a consensus machin…
The increasing prevalence of Virtual Reality technologies as a platform for gaming and video playback warrants research into how to best apply the current state of the art to challenges in data visualization. Many current VR systems are noncollaborative, while data analysis and visualization is often a multi-person process. Our goal in this paper is to address the technical and user experience challenges that arise when creating VR environments for collaborative data visualization. We focus on the integration of multiple tracking systems and the new interaction paradigms that this integration …
Interactive visualization design and research have primarily focused on local data and synchronous events. However, for more complex use cases---e.g., remote database access and streaming data sources---developers must grapple with distributed data and asynchronous events. Currently, constructing these use cases is difficult and time-consuming; developers are forced to operationally program low-level details like asynchronous database querying and reactive event handling. This approach is in stark contrast to modern methods for browser-based interactive visualization, which feature high-level …

Given thousands of equally accurate machine learning (ML) models, how can users choose among them? A recent ML technique enables domain experts and data scientists to generate a complete Rashomon set for sparse decision trees--a huge set of almost-optimal interpretable ML models. To help ML practitioners identify models with desirable properties from this Rashomon set, we develop TimberTrek, the first interactive visualization system that summarizes thousands of sparse decision trees at scale. Two usage scenarios highlight how TimberTrek can empower users to easily explore, compare, and curate…
Frequent monitoring of participant compliance is necessary when conducting large-scale, longitudinal studies to ensure that the collected data is of sufficiently high quality. While the need for achieving high compliance has been underscored and there are discussions on incentives and factors affecting compliance, little is shared about the actual processes and tools used for monitoring compliance in such studies. Monitoring participant compliance with respect to multi-modal data can be a tedious process, especially if there are only a few personnel involved. In this case study, we describe th…
