We prove that if a 1-connected non-conformally flat conformal Lorentzian manifold $(M,c)$ admits a connected essential transitive group of conformal transformations, then there exists a metric $g\in c$ such that $(M,g)$ is a complete homogeneous plane wave. This finishes the classification of 1-connected Lorentzian manifolds, which admit transitive essential conformal group. We also prove that the group of conformal transformations of a non-conformally flat 1-connected homogeneous plane wave $(M,g)$ consists of homotheties, and it is a 1-dimensional extension of the group of isometries.
We show that locally conformally flat quasi-Einstein manifolds are globally conformally equivalent to a space form or locally isometric to a $pp$-wave or a warped product.
We describe all Lorentzian semi-direct extensions of the Heisenberg group which are conformally Einstein. As a by side result, Bach-flat left-invariant Lorentzian metrics on semi-direct extensions of the Heisenberg group are classified, thus providing new background solutions in conformal gravity.
The local classification of conformally flat Lorentzian manifolds with special holonomy groups is obtained. The corresponding local metrics are certain extensions of Riemannian spaces of constant sectional curvature to Walker metrics.
It is shown that locally conformally flat Lorentzian gradient Ricci solitons are locally isometric to a Robertson-Walker warped product, if the gradient of the potential function is non null, and to a plane wave, if the gradient of the potential function is null. The latter gradient Ricci solitons are necessarily steady.
We study pseudo-Riemanniasn manifolds $(M,g)$ with transitive group of conformal transformation which is essential, i.e. does not preserves any metric conformal to $g$. All such manifolds of Lorentz signature with non exact isotropy representation of the stability subalgebra are described. A construction of essential conformally homogeneous manifolds with exact isotropy represenatation is given. Using spinor formalism, we prove that it provides all 4-dimensional non conformally flat Lorentzian 4-dimensional manifolds with transitive essentially conformal group.
We describe the local conformal geometry of a Lorentzian spin manifold $(M,g)$ admitting a twistor spinor $ϕ$ with zero. Moreover, we describe the shape of the zero set of $ϕ$. If $ϕ$ has isolated zeros then the metric $g$ is locally conformally equivalent to a static monopole. In the other case the zero set consists of null geodesic(s) and $g$ is locally conformally equivalent to a Brinkmann metric. Our arguments utilise tractor calculus in an essential way. The Dirac current of $ϕ$, which is a conformal Killing vector field, plays an important role for our discussion as well.
The non-existence of non-trivial conformally symmetric manifolds in the three-dimensional Riemannian setting is shown. In Lorentzian signature, a complete local classification is obtained. Furthermore, the isometry classes are examined.
Given a compact, three-dimensional, real-analytic Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$, we prove that the identity component of the conformal group preserves a metric in the conformal class $[g]$, or $(M,g)$ is conformally flat.
We show that Lorentzian manifolds whose isometry group is of dimension at least $\frac{1}{2}n(n-1)+1$ are expanding, steady and shrinking Ricci solitons and steady gradient Ricci solitons. This provides examples of complete locally conformally flat and symmetric Lorentzian Ricci solitons which are not rigid.
We determine, for all three-dimensional non-unimodular Lie groups equipped with a Lorentzian metric, the set of homogeneous geodesics through a point. Together with the results of [C] and [CM2], this leads to the full classification of three-dimensional Lorentzian g.o. spaces and naturally reductive spaces.
We consider four dimensional conformally flat homogeneous pseudo Riemannian manifolds. According to forms (Seger types) of the Ricci operator, we provide a full classification of four dimensional pseudo Riemannian conformally flat homogeneous Ricci solitons.
We give a complete description of semi-symmetric algebraic curvature tensors on a four-dimensional Lorentzian vector space and we use this description to determine all four-dimensional homogeneous semi-symmetric Lorentzian manifolds.
In this paper we study the invariant Walker structures over the conformally flat four-dimensional homogeneous manifolds according to the Seger types of the Ricci operator.
The 2-parameter family of certain homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds which includes Minkowski 3-space and anti-de Sitter 3-space is considered. Each homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifold in the 2-parameter family has a solvable Lie group structure with left invariant metric. A generalized integral representation formula which is the unification of representation formulas for maximal spacelike surfaces in those homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds is obtained. The normal Gauß map of maximal spacelike surfaces in those homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds and its harmonicity are discussed.
We prove various classification results for homogeneous locally conformally symplectic manifolds. In particular, we show that a homogeneous locally conformally Kaehler manifold of a reductive group is of Vaisman type, if the normalizer of the isotropy group is compact. We also show that such a result does not hold in the case of noncompact normalizer and determine all left-invariant locally conformally Kaehler structures on reductive Lie groups.
The main purpose of this paper is to determine the admissible forms of the sectional curvature operator on a three-dimensional locally homogeneous Lorentzian manifolds.
It is known that automorphism group $G$ of a compact homogeneous locally conformally Kähler manifold $M=G/H$ has at least a 1-dimensional center. We prove that the center of $G$ is at most 2-dimensional, and that if its dimension is 2, then $M$ is Vaisman and isometric to a mapping torus of an isometry of a homogeneous Sasakian manifold.
We describe the structure of $d$-dimensional homogeneous Lorentzian $G$-manifolds $M=G/H$ of a semisimple Lie group $G$. Due to a result by N. Kowalsky, it is sufficient to consider the case when the group $G$ acts properly, that is the stabilizer $H$ is compact. Then any homogeneous space $G/\bar H$ with a smaller group $\bar H \subset H$ admits an invariant Lorentzian metric. A homogeneous manifold $G/H$ with a connected compact stabilizer $H$ is called a minimal admissible manifold if it admits an invariant Lorentzian metric, but no homogeneous $G$-manifold $G/\tilde H$ with a larger connec…
We present in this paper a $C^1$-metric on an open neighbourhood of the origin in $\RR^{5}$. The metric is of Lorentzian signature $(1,4)$ and admits a solution to the twistor equation for spinors with a unique isolated zero at the origin. The metric is not conformally flat in any neighbourhood of the origin. The construction is based on the Eguchi-Hanson metric with parallel spinors on Riemannian 4-space.
In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for spacelike and timelike curves in a conformally flat, quasi conformally flat and conformally symmetric 4-dimensional \textit{LP}-Sasakian manifold to be proper biharmonic. Also, we investigate proper biharmonic curves in the Lorentzian sphere $S^{4}_{1}$.
We describe the structure of the Ricci tensor on a locally homogeneous Lorentzian gradient Ricci soliton. In the non-steady case, we show the soliton is rigid in dimensions three and four. In the steady case, we give a complete classification in dimension three.
In previous papers, a fundamental affine method for studying homogeneous geodesics was developed. Using this method and elementary differential topology it was proved that any homogeneous affine manifold and in particular any homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian manifold admits a homogeneous geodesic through arbitrary point. In the present paper this affine method is refined and adapted to the pseudo-Riemannian case. Using this method and elementary topology it is proved that any homogeneous Lorentzian manifold of even dimension admits a light-like homogeneous geodesic. The method is illustrated in d…
We find a spinorial representation of a Riemannian or Lorentzian surface in a Lorentzian homogeneous space of dimension $3.$ We in particular obtain a representation theorem for surfaces in the $\mathbb{L}(κ,τ)$ spaces. We then recover the Calabi correspondence between minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and maximal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}_1^3$, and obtain a new Lawson type correspondence between CMC surfaces in $\mathbb{R}_1^3$ and in the 3-dimensional pseudo-hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}_1^{3}.$
We give a generalized Weierstrass formula for a Lorentz surface conformally immersed in the four-dimensional space $\mathbb{R}^{2,2}$ using spinors and Lorentz numbers. We also study the immersions of a Lorentzian surface in {\bf the} Anti-de Sitter space (a pseudo-sphere in $\mathbb{R}^{2,2}$): we give a new spinor representation formula and deduce the conformal description of a flat Lorentzian surface in that space.
The main result of this paper is that the space of conformally compact Einstein metrics on a given manifold is a smooth, infinite dimensional Banach manifold, provided it is non-empty, generalizing earlier work of Graham-Lee and Biquard. We also prove full boundary regularity for such metrics in dimension 4, and a local existence and uniqueness theorem for such metrics with prescribed metric and stress-energy tensor at conformal infinity, again in dimension 4. This result also holds for Lorentzian-Einstein metrics with a positive cosmological constant.
Extended recurrent pseudo-Riemannian manifolds were introduced by Mileva Prvanovic'. We reconsider her work in the light of recent results and show that the manifold is conformally flat, and it is a space of quasi-constant curvature. We also show that an extended recurrent Lorentzian manifold, with time-like associated covector, is a perfect fluid Robertson-Walker space-time. We obtain the equation of state; in n = 4 and if the scalar curvature is zero, a model for incoherent radiation is obtained.
The 2-parameter family of certain homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds which includes Minkowski 3-space, de Sitter 3-space, and Minkowski motion group is considered. Each homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifold in the 2-parameter family has a solvable Lie group structure with left invariant metric. A generalized integral representation formula which is the unificaton of representation formulas for minimal timelike surfaces in those homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds is obtained. The normal Gauß map of minimal timelike surfaces in those homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds and its harmonicity are discuss…
In this work it is shown that a necessary condition for the completeness of the geodesics of left invariant pseudo-Riemannian metrics on Lie groups is also sufficient in the case of 3-dimensional unimodular Lie groups, and not sufficient for 3-dimensional non unimodular Lie groups. As a consequence it is possible to identify, amongst the compact locally homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds with non compact (local) isotropy group, those that are geodesically complete.
Let $g$ be a hyper-Hermitian metric on a simply connected hypercomplex four-manifold $M$. We show that when the isometry group $I(M,g)$ contains a subgroup acting simply transitively on $M$ by hypercomplex isometries then the metric $g$ is conformal to a hyper-Kähler metric. We describe explicitely the corresponding hyper-Kähler metrics and it follows that, in four dimensions, these are the only hyper-Kähler metrics containing a homogeneous metric in its conformal class.
An indecomposable Lie group with Riemannian bi-invariant metric is always simple and hence Einstein. For indefinite metrics this is no longer true, not even for simple Lie groups. We study the question of whether a semi-Riemannian bi-invariant metric is conformal to an Einstein metric. We obtain results for all three cases in the structure theorem by Medina and Revoy for indecomposable metric Lie algebras: the case of simple Lie algebras, and the cases of double extensions of metric Lie algebras by $\mathbb{R}$ or a simple Lie algebra. Simple Lie algebras are conformally Einstein precisely whe…
Conformally quasi-recurrent (CQR)_n pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are investigated, and several new results are obtained. It is shown that the Ricci tensor and the gradient of the fundamental vector are Weyl compatible tensors (the notion was introduced recently by the authors and applies to significative space-times), (CQR)_n manifolds with concircular fundamental vector are quasi-Einstein. For 4-dimensional (CQR)$_4$ Lorentzian manifolds the fundamental vector is null and unique up to a scaling, it is an eigenvector of the Ricci tensor, and its integral curves are geodesics. Such space-times a…
In this paper we show that for a Berger metric $\hat{g}$ on $S^3$, the non-positively curved conformally compact Einstein metric on the $4$-ball $B_1(0)$ with $(S^3, [\hat{g}])$ as its conformal infinity is unique up to isometries and it is the metric constructed by Pedersen \cite{Pedersen}. In particular, since in \cite{LiQingShi}, we proved that if the Yamabe constant of the conformal infinity $Y(S^3, [\hat{g}])$ is close to that of the round sphere then any conformally compact Einstein manifold filled in must be negatively curved and simply connected, therefore if $\hat{g}$ is a Berger metr…
k-Curvature homogeneous three-dimensional Walker metrics are described for k=0,1,2. This allows a complete description of locally homogeneous three-dimensional Walker metrics, showing that there exist exactly three isometry classes of such manifolds. As an application one obtains a complete description of all locally homogeneous Lorentzian manifolds with recurrent curvature. Moreover, potential functions are constructed in all the locally homogeneous manifolds resulting in steady gradient Ricci and Cotton solitons.
The paper is devoted to metric connections with parallel skew-symmetric torsion in Lorentzian signature. This is motivated by recent progress in the Riemannian signature and by possible applications to supergravity theories. We provide a complete information about holonomy algebras, torsion and curvature of the considered connections up to the corresponding objects from the Riemannian signature. Various examples are constructed. It is shown how to construct all simply connected Lorentzian naturally reductive homogeneous spaces of arbitrary dimension from Riemannian naturally reductive homogene…
We consider conformal actions of simple Lie groups on compact Lorentzian manifolds. Mainly motivated by the Lorentzian version of a conjecture of Lichnerowicz, we establish the alternative: Either the group acts isometrically for some metric in the conformal class, or the manifold is conformally flat - that is, everywhere locally conformally diffeomorphic to Minkowski space-time. When the group is non-compact and not locally isomorphic to SO(1,n), n>1, we derive global conclusions, extending a theorem of Frances and Zeghib to some simple Lie groups of real-rank 1. This result is also a first s…
We prove that a four-dimensional Lorentzian manifold that is curvature homogeneous of order 3, or $\CH_3$ for short, is necessarily locally homogeneous. We also exhibit and classify four-dimensional Lorentzian, $\CH_2$ manifolds that are not homogeneous.
It is proved that the holomorphic quadratic differential associated to CMC surfaces in Riemannian products $\mathbb{S}^2\times\Rr$ and $\mathbb{H}^2\times \Rr$ discovered by U. Abresch and H. Rosenberg could be obtained as a linear combination of usual Hopf differentials. Using this fact, we are able to extend it for Lorentzian products. Families of examples of helicoidal CMC surfaces on these spaces are explicitly described. We also present some characterizations of CMC rotationally invariant discs and spheres. Finally, after establish some height and area estimates, we prove the existence of…
We show that a Lorentzian homogeneous space admitting a homogeneous structure of type T1 + T3 is either a (locally) symmetric space or a singular homogeneous plane wave.
Based on the work of Adams and Stuck as well as on the work of Zeghib, we classify the Lie groups which can act isometrically and locally effectively on Lorentzian manifolds of finite volume. In the case that the corresponding Lie algebra contains a direct summand isomorphic to the two-dimensional special linear algebra or to a twisted Heisenberg algebra, we also describe the geometric structure of the manifolds if they are compact. Using these results, we investigate the local geometry of compact homogeneous Lorentz spaces whose isometry groups have non-compact connected components. It turns …
We compute the full holonomy group of compact Lorentzian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor, which are neither conformally flat nor locally symmetric, for the case where the fundamental group is contained in a distinguished subgroup G of the isometry group of the universal cover. To prove this, we show that every such compact Lorentzian manifold has to be geodesically complete. Moreover we characterize the identity component of the isometry group for this universal cover and show that G is up to a discrete factor contained in the latter. Concretely, we prove that the identity component of the…
The main result of this paper is that a Lorentzian manifold is locally conformally equivalent to a manifold with recurrent lightlike vector field and totally isotropic Ricci tensor if and only if its conformal tractor holonomy admits a 2-dimensional totally isotropic invariant subspace. Furthermore, for semi-Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary signature we prove that the conformal holonomy algebra of a $C$-space is a Berger algebra. For Ricci-flat spaces we show how the conformal holonomy can be obtained by the holonomy of the ambient metric and get results for Riemannian manifolds and plane wav…
We study the affine quasi-Einstein Equation for homogeneous surfaces. This gives rise through the modified Riemannian extension to new half conformally flat generalized quasi-Einstein neutral signature $(2,2)$ manifolds, to conformally Einstein manifolds and also to new Einstein manifolds through a warped product construction.
The authors study the geometry of lightlike hypersurfaces on manifolds $(M, c)$ endowed with a pseudoconformal structure $c = CO (n - 1, 1)$ of Lorentzian signature. Such hypersurfaces are of interest in general relativity since they can be models of different types of physical horizons. On a lightlike hypersurface, the authors consider the fibration of isotropic geodesics and investigate their singular points and singular submanifolds. They construct a conformally invariant normalization of a lightlike hypersurface intrinsically connected with its geometry and investigate affine connections i…
In the present paper, we prove that no infinite group acts isometrically, effectively, and properly discontinuously on a certain class of Lorentzian manifolds that are not necessarily homogeneous.
The notion of maximal extension of a globally hyperbolic space-time arises from the notion of maximal solutions of the Cauchy problem associated to the Einstein's equations of general relativity. In 1969 Choquet-Bruhat and Geroch proved that if the Cauchy problem has a local solution, this solution has a unique maximal extension. Since the causal structure of a space-time is invariant under conformal changes of metrics we may generalize this notion of maximality to the conformal setting. In this article we focus on conformally flat space-times of dimension greater or equal than 3. In this case…
Let $(M,\nabla,g)$ be a Hessian manifold. Then the total space of the tangent bundle $TM$ can be endowed with a Kähler structure $\left(I,{\cal g}\right)$. We say that a homogeneous Hessian manifold is a Hessian manifold $(M,\nabla,g)$ endowed with a transitive action of a group $G$ preserving $\nabla$ and $g$. If $(M,\nabla,g)$ is a simply connected homogeneous Hessian manifold for a group $G$ then we construct an action of the group $G\ltimes_θ\mathbb{R}^n$ on $TM=M\times \mathbb{R}^n$ such that $\left(TM,I,g\right)$ is a homogeneous Kähler manifold for the group $G\ltimes_θ\mathbb{R}^n$. A …
Conformally variational Riemannian invariants (CVIs), such as the scalar curvature, are homogeneous scalar invariants which arise as the gradient of a Riemannian functional. We establish a wide range of stability and rigidity results involving CVIs, generalizing many such results for the scalar curvature.
We describe three-dimensional Lorentzian homogeneous Ricci solitons, showing that all types (i.e. shrinking, expanding and steady) exist. Moreover, all non-trivial examples have non-diagonalizable Ricci operator with one only eigenvalue.
It is shown that the space of null geodesics of a causally simple Lorentzian manifold is Hausdorff if it admits an open conformal embedding into a globally hyperbolic spacetime. This provides an obstruction to conformal embeddings of causally simple spacetimes into globally hyperbolic ones irrespective of curvature conditions. Examples of causally simple spacetimes are given not conformally embeddable into globally hyperbolic ones.
We will discuss in this paper homogeneous locally conformally Keahler (or shortly homogeneous l.c.K.) manifolds and locally homogeneous l.c.K. manifolds from various aspects of study in the field of l.c.K. geometry. We will provide a survey of known results along with some new results and observations; in particular we make a complete classification of 4-dimensional homogeneous and locally homogeneous l.c.K. manifolds in terms of Lie algebras.
We consider Lie groups equipped with a left-invariant cyclic Lorentzian metric. As in the Riemannian case, in terms of homogeneous structures, such metrics can be considered as different as possible from bi-invariant metrics. We show that several results concerning cyclic Riemannian metrics do not extend to their Lorentzian analogues, and obtain a full classification of three- and four-dimensional cyclic Lorentzian metrics.
