Section 5 is rewritten, now contains a proof of a new expression for the Borel sum of the full asymptotic series of higher genus GW invariants. The Borel sums are defined and the Stokes jumps are computed, their sum fit into the previously defined deformation of the prepotential
The partition function of topological string theory on any family of Calabi-Yau threefolds is defined perturbatively as an asymptotic series in the topological string coupling and encodes, in a holomorphic limit, higher genus Gromov-Witten as well as Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. We prove that the partition function of topological strings of any CY in this limit can be written as a product, where each factor is given by the partition function of the resolved conifold with shifted arguments, raised to the power of certain sheaf invariants. We use this result to put forward an expression for the non-perturbative topological string partition function in this limit, as a product over analytic functions in the topological string coupling which correspond to the Borel sums for the resolved conifold found previously. We furthermore find an expression for the Borel transform of the full asymptotic series in this limit expressed in terms of the sheaf invariants. We use this to define the Borel sums and compute the corresponding Stokes jumps which constitute non-perturbative corrections to the partition function. The jumps depend only on genus zero GV invariants and their sum can be expressed entirely in terms of a single function which is introduced as a deformation of the prepotential.
We study the perturbative expansion of the ground state energy in the presence of an external field coupled to a conserved charge in the integrable two-dimensional O$(4)$ nonlinear sigma model. By solving Volin's algebraic equations for the perturbative coefficients we study the large order asymptotic behaviour of the perturbative series analytically. We confirm the previously numerically found leading behaviour and study the nearest singularities of the Borel transformed series and the associated alien derivatives. We find a 'resurgence' behaviour: the leading alien derivatives can be express…
The mathematical idea of resurgence allows one to obtain nonperturbative information from the large-order behavior of perturbative expansions. This idea can be very fruitful in physics applications, in particular if one does not have access to such nonperturbative information from first principles. An important example is topological string theory, which is a priori only defined as an asymptotic perturbative expansion in the coupling constant g_s. We show how the idea of resurgence can be combined with the holomorphic anomaly equation to extend the perturbative definition of the topological st…
We revisit the strong coupling limit of the cusp anomalous dimension in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. It is known that the strong coupling expansion is asymptotic and non-Borel summable. As a consequence, the cusp anomalous dimension receives non-perturbative corrections, and the complete strong coupling expansion should be a resurgent transseries. We reveal that the perturbative and non-perturbative parts in the transseries are closely interrelated. Solving the Beisert-Eden-Staudacher equation systematically, we analyze in detail the large order behavior in the strong coupling perturbat…
We compute non-perturbative contributions to the Adler function, the derivative of the vacuum polarization function in gauge theory, using resurgence methods and Borel-summed gauge field propagators. At 2-loop, to order $1/N_f$, we construct the full 2-parameter transseries and perform the sum over the non-perturbative sectors. We then introduce a convolution-based method to derive the transseries structure of product series, which can also be used to study higher orders in the expansion in $1/N_f$. We compute 3-loop planar diagrams, at order $1/N_f^2$, and for each diagram study the asymptoti…
The quest to find a nonperturbative formulation of topological string theory has recently seen two unrelated developments. On the one hand, via quantization of the mirror curve associated to a toric Calabi-Yau background, it has been possible to give a nonperturbative definition of the topological-string partition function. On the other hand, using techniques of resurgence and transseries, it has been possible to extend the string (asymptotic) perturbative expansion into a transseries involving nonperturbative instanton sectors. Within the specific example of the local P2 toric Calabi-Yau thre…
We perform a resurgence analysis of the $SU(2)$ Chern-Simons partition function on a Brieksorn homology sphere $Σ(2,5,7)$. Starting from an exact Chern-Simons partition function, we study the Borel resummation of its perturbative expansion.
In this work we explicitly show resurgence relations between perturbative and one instanton sectors of the resonance energy levels for cubic and quartic anharmonic potentials in one-dimensional quantum mechanics. Both systems satisfy the Dunne-Unsal relation and hence we are able to derive one-instanton non-perturbative contributions with the fluctuation terms to the energy merely from the perturbative data. We confirm our results with previous results obtained by Zinn-Justin et al.
We study the geometry and mechanics (both classical and quantum) of potential wells described by squares of Chebyshev polynomials. We show that in a small neighbourhood of the locus cut out by them in the space of hyperelliptic curves, these systems exhibit low-orders/low-orders resurgence, where perturbative fluctuations about the vacuum determine perturbative fluctuations about non-perturbative saddles.
The Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit for the low-energy behavior of N=2 and N=2* supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theories is encoded in the spectrum of the Mathieu and Lam'e equations, respectively. This correspondence is usually expressed via an all-orders Bohr-Sommerfeld relation, but this neglects non-perturbative effects, the nature of which is very different in the electric, magnetic and dyonic regions. In the gauge theory dyonic region the spectral expansions are divergent, and indeed are not Borel-summable, so they are more properly described by resurgent trans-series in which perturbative and non…
We show that there is a natural universal limit of the topological string free energies at the large radius point. The new free energies keep a nonholomorphic dependence on the complex structure moduli space and their functional form is the same for all Calabi-Yau geometries, compact and noncompact alike. The asymptotic nature of the free energy expansion changes in this limit due to a milder factorial growth of its coefficients, and this implies a transseries extension with instanton effects in $\exp(- 1/g_s^2)$, of NS-brane type, rather than $\exp(-1/g_s)$, of D-brane type. We show a relatio…
We explain the physical role of non-perturbative saddle points of path integrals in theories without instantons, using the example of the asymptotically free two-dimensional principal chiral model (PCM). Standard topological arguments based on homotopy considerations suggest no role for non-perturbative saddles in such theories. However, resurgence theory, which unifies perturbative and non-perturbative physics, predicts the existence of several types of non-perturbative saddles associated with features of the large-order structure of perturbation theory. These points are illustrated in the PC…
We explore a one parameter $ζ$-deformation of the quantum-mechanical Sine-Gordon and Double-Well potentials which we call the Double Sine-Gordon (DSG) and the Tilted Double Well (TDW), respectively. In these systems, for positive integer values of $ζ$, the lowest $ζ$ states turn out to be exactly solvable for DSG - a feature known as Quasi-Exact-Solvability (QES) - and solvable to all orders in perturbation theory for TDW. For DSG such states do not show any instanton-like dependence on the coupling constant, although the action has real saddles. On the other hand, although it has no real sadd…
Nonperturbative effects in string theory are usually associated to D-branes. In many cases it can be explicitly shown that D-brane instantons control the large-order behavior of string perturbation theory, leading to the well-known (2g)! growth of the genus expansion. This paper presents a detailed treatment of nonperturbative solutions in string theory, and their relation to the large-order behavior of perturbation theory, making use of transseries and resurgent analysis. These are powerful techniques addressing general nonperturbative contributions within non-linear systems, which are develo…
We explain how a vanishing, or truncated, perturbative expansion, such as often arises in semi-classically tractable supersymmetric theories, can nevertheless be related to fluctuations about non-perturbative sectors via resurgence. We also demonstrate that, in the same class of theories, the vanishing of the ground state energy (unbroken supersymmetry) can be attributed to the cancellation between a real saddle and a complex saddle (with hidden topological angle pi), and positivity of the ground state energy (broken supersymmetry) can be interpreted as the dominance of complex saddles. In eit…
We introduce a non-perturbative continuum framework to study the dynamics of quantum field theory (QFT), applied here to the CP(N-1) model, using Ecalle's theory of resurgent trans-series, combined with the physical principle of continuity, in which spatial compactification and a Born-Oppenheimer approximation reduce QFT to quantum mechanics, while preventing all intervening rapid cross-overs or phase transitions. The reduced quantum mechanics contains the germ of all non-perturbative data, e.g., mass gap, of the QFT, all of which are calculable. For CP(N-1), the results obtained at arbitrary …
We discuss the resummation of the strong coupling asymptotic expansion of the dressing phase of the ${\rm AdS}_5\times {\rm S}^5$ superstring. The dressing phase proposed by Beisert, Eden and Staudacher can be recovered from a modified Borel-Ecalle resummation of this asymptotic expansion only by completing it with new, non-perturbative and exponentially suppressed terms that can be organized into different sectors labelled by an instanton-like number. We compute the contribution to the dressing phase coming from the sum over all the instanton sectors and show that it satisfies the homogeneous…
First we compute the $\mbox{S}^2$ partition function of the supersymmetric $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model via localization and as a check we show that the chiral ring structure can be correctly reproduced. For the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ case we provide a concrete realisation of this ring in terms of Bessel functions. We consider a weak coupling expansion in each topological sector and write it as a finite number of perturbative corrections plus an infinite series of instanton-anti-instanton contributions. To be able to apply resurgent analysis we then consider a non-supersymmetric deformation of the local…
We study the O(2N) model at criticality in three dimensions in the double scaling limit of large N and large charge. We show that the large-charge expansion is an asymptotic series, and we use resurgence techniques to study the non-perturbative corrections and to extend the validity of the effective field theory to any value of the charge. We conjecture the general form of the non-perturbative behavior of the conformal dimensions for any value of N and find very good agreement with previous lattice data.
We investigate the ground-state energy of the integrable two dimensional $O(3)$ sigma model in a magnetic field. By determining a large number of perturbative coefficients we explore the closest singularities of the corresponding Borel function. We then confront its median resummation to the high precision numerical solution of the exact integral equation and observe that the leading exponentially suppressed contribution is not related to the asymptotics of the perturbative coefficients. By analytically expanding the integral equation we calculate the leading non-perturbative contributions up …
We study the integrable bi-Yang-Baxter deformation of the $SU(2)$ principal chiral model (PCM) and its finite action uniton solutions. Under an adiabatic compactification on an $S^1$, we obtain a quantum mechanics with an elliptic Lamé-like potential. We perform a perturbative calculation of the ground state energy in this quantum mechanics to large orders obtaining an asymptotic series. Using the Borel-Padé technique, we determine the expected locations of branch cuts in the Borel plane of the perturbative series and show that they match the values of the uniton actions. Therefore, we can mat…
An important non-perturbative effect in quantum physics is the energy gap of superconductors, which is exponentially small in the coupling constant. A natural question is whether this effect can be incorporated in the theory of resurgence. In this paper we take some steps in this direction. We conjecture that the perturbative series for the ground state energy of a superconductor is factorially divergent, and that its leading Borel singularity is governed by the superconducting energy gap. We test this conjecture in detail in the attractive Gaudin-Yang model, an exactly solvable model in one d…
We study the non-perturbative quantum geometry of the open and closed topological string on the resolved conifold and its mirror. Our tools are finite difference equations in the open and closed string moduli and the resurgence analysis of their formal power series solutions. In the closed setting, we derive new finite difference equations for the refined partition function as well as its Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit. We write down a distinguished analytic solution for the refined difference equation that reproduces the expected non-perturbative content of the refined topological string. We…
The partition function of complex Chern-Simons theory on a 3-manifold with torus boundary reduces to a finite dimensional state-integral which is a holomorphic function of a complexified Planck's constant $τ$ in the complex cut plane and an entire function of a complex parameter $u$. This gives rise to a vector of factorially divergent perturbative formal power series whose Stokes rays form a peacock-like pattern in the complex plane. We conjecture that these perturbative series are resurgent, their trans-series involve two non-perturbative variables, their Stokes automorphism satisfies a uniq…
We study a certain class of supersymmetric (SUSY) observables in 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY Chern-Simons (CS) matter theories and investigate how their exact results are related to the perturbative series with respect to coupling constants given by inverse CS levels. We show that the observables have nontrivial resurgent structures by expressing the exact results as a full transseries consisting of perturbative and non-perturbative parts. As real mass parameters are varied, we encounter Stokes phenomena at an infinite number of points, where the perturbative series becomes non-Borel-summable due …
We study the QCD Adler function in the energy region $\approx 0.7-2.5$ GeV, in which the non-perturbative effects become dominant. Our analysis is a renormalon-based evaluation using transseries within the resurgence of the Renormalization-Group-Equation and does not require the Operator-Product-Expansion.
We study three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric abelian gauge theories with various matter contents living on a squashed sphere. In particular we focus on two problems: firstly we perform a Picard-Lefschetz decomposition of the localised path integral but, due to the absence of a topological theta angle in three dimensions, we find that steepest descent cycles do not permit us to distinguish between contributions to the path-integral coming from (would-be) different topological sectors, for example a vortex from a vortex/anti-vortex. The second problem we analyse is the truncation of…
We illustrate the physical significance and mathematical origin of resurgent trans-series expansions for energy eigenvalues in quantum mechanical problems with degenerate harmonic minima, by using the uniform WKB approach. We provide evidence that the perturbative expansion, combined with a global eigenvalue condition, contains all information needed to generate all orders of the non-perturbative multi-instanton expansion. This provides a dramatic realization of the concept of resurgence, whose structure is naturally encoded in the resurgence triangle. We explain the relation between the unifo…
We study the large $N$ 't Hooft expansion of the partition function of 2d $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on a torus. We compute the $1/N$ genus expansion of both the chiral and the full partition function of 2d Yang-Mills using the recursion relation found by Kaneko and Zagier with a slight modification. Then we study the large order behavior of this genus expansion, from which we extract the non-perturbative correction using the resurgence relation. It turns out that the genus expansion is not Borel summable and the coefficient of 1-instanton correction, the so-called Stokes parameter, is pure imag…
We use resurgent analysis to study non-perturbative aspects of the one-dimensional, multicomponent Hubbard model with an attractive interaction and arbitrary filling. In the two-component case, we show that the leading Borel singularity of the perturbative series for the ground-state energy is determined by the energy gap, as expected for superconducting systems. This singularity turns out to be of the renormalon type, and we identify a class of diagrams leading to the correct factorial growth. As a consequence of our analysis, we propose an explicit expression for the energy gap at weak coupl…
In theories with renormalons the perturbative series is factorially divergent even after restricting to a given order in $1/N$, making the $1/N$ expansion a natural testing ground for the theory of resurgence. We study in detail the interplay between resurgent properties and the $1/N$ expansion in various integrable field theories with renormalons. We focus on the free energy in the presence of a chemical potential coupled to a conserved charge, which can be computed exactly with the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA). In some examples, like the first $1/N$ correction to the free energy in the n…
This work is a step towards a non-perturbative continuum definition of quantum field theory (QFT), beginning with asymptotically free two dimensional non-linear sigma-models, using recent ideas from mathematics and QFT. The ideas from mathematics are resurgence theory, the trans-series framework, and Borel-Ecalle resummation. The ideas from QFT use continuity on R^1 x S^1_L, i.e, the absence of any phase transition as N \to infinity, or rapid-crossovers for finite-N, and the small-L weak coupling limit to render the semi-classical sector well-defined and calculable. We classify semi-classical …
The holomorphic anomaly equations describe B-model closed topological strings in Calabi-Yau geometries. Having been used to construct perturbative expansions, it was recently shown that they can also be extended past perturbation theory by making use of resurgent transseries. These yield formal nonperturbative solutions, showing integrability of the holomorphic anomaly equations at the nonperturbative level. This paper takes such constructions one step further by working out in great detail the specific example of topological strings in the mirror of the local CP2 toric Calabi-Yau background, …
Resurgence theory implies that the non-perturbative (NP) and perturbative (P) data in a QFT are quantitatively related, and that detailed information about non-perturbative saddle point field configurations of path integrals can be extracted from perturbation theory. Traditionally, only stable NP saddle points are considered in QFT, and homotopy group considerations are used to classify them. However, in many QFTs the relevant homotopy groups are trivial, and even when they are non-trivial they leave many NP saddle points undetected. Resurgence provides a refined classification of NP-saddles, …
We study the dynamics of four dimensional gauge theories with adjoint fermions for all gauge groups, both in perturbation theory and non-perturbatively, by using circle compactification with periodic boundary conditions for the fermions. There are new gauge phenomena. We show that, to all orders in perturbation theory, many gauge groups are Higgsed by the gauge holonomy around the circle to a product of both abelian and nonabelian gauge group factors. Non-perturbatively there are monopole-instantons with fermion zero modes and two types of monopole-anti-monopole molecules, called bions. One ty…
In the previous papers, the authors pointed out correspondence between a supersymmetric double-well matrix model and two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory on a Ramond-Ramond background. This was confirmed by agreement between planar correlation functions in the matrix model and tree-level amplitudes in the superstring theory. Furthermore, in the matrix model we computed one-point functions of single-trace operators to all orders of genus expansion in its double scaling limit, and found that the large-order behavior of this expansion is stringy and not Borel summable. In this paper, we di…
We show how the renormalons emerge from the renormalization group equation with a priori no reference to any Feynman diagrams. The proof is rather given by recasting the renormalization group equation as a resurgent equation studied in the mathematical literature, which describes a function with an infinite number of singularities in the positive axis of the Borel plane. Consistency requires a one-to-one correspondence between the existence of such kind of equation and the actual (generalized) Borel resummation of the renormalons through a one-parameter transseries. Our finding suggests how no…
In these notes we give an overview of different topics in resurgence theory from a physics point of view, but with particular mathematical flavour. After a short review of the standard Borel method for the resummation of asymptotic series, we introduce the class of simple resurgent functions, explaining their importance in physical problems. We define the Stokes automorphism and the alien derivative and discuss these objects in concrete examples using the notion of trans-series expansion. With all the tools introduced, we see how resurgence and alien calculus allow us to extract non-perturbati…

We present a broad conceptual introduction to some new ideas in non-perturbative QFT. The large-$N$ orbifold-orientifold equivalence connects a natural large-$N$ limit of QCD to QCD with adjoint fermions. QCD(adj) with periodic boundary conditions and double-trace deformation of Yang-Mills theory satisfy large-$N$ volume independence, a type of orbifold equivalence. Certain QFTs that satisfy volume independence at $N=\infty$ exhibit adiabatic continuity at finite-$N$, and also become semi-classically calculable on small $\mathbb R^3 \times S^1$. We discuss the role of monopole-instantons, and …
In a large variety of quantum mechanical systems, we show that the full non-perturbative expression for energy eigenvalues, containing all orders of perturbative, non-perturbative and quasi-zero-mode terms, may be generated directly from the perturbative expansion about the perturbative vacuum, combined with a single global boundary condition. This provides a dramatic realization of the principle of "resurgence", that the fluctuations about different semiclassical saddle points are related to one another in a precise quantitative manner. The analysis of quantum mechanics also generalizes to ce…
