We show that the distribution of self-normalized sums of free self-adjoint random variables converges weakly to Wigner's semicircle law under appropriate conditions and estimate the rate of convergence in terms of the Kolmogorov distance. In the case of free identically distributed self-adjoint bounded random variables, we retrieve the standard rate of order $n^{-1/2}$ up to a logarithmic factor, whereas we obtain a rate of order $n^{-1/4}$ in the corresponding unbounded setting. These results provide free versions of certain self-normalized limit theorems in classical probability theory.
We derive a central limit theorem for sums of a function of independent sums of independent and identically distributed random variables. In particular we show that previously known result from Rempa\la and Weso\lowski (Statist. Probab. Lett. 74 (2005) 129--138), which can be obtained by applying the logarithm as the function, holds true under weaker assumptions.
We study the self-normalized sums of independent random variables from the perspective of the Malliavin calculus. We give the chaotic expansion for them and we prove a Berry-Esséen bound with respect to several distances.
In this paper, we prove a Berry--Esseen bound with optimal order for self-normalized sums of local dependent random variables under some mild dependence conditions. The proof is based on Stein's method and a randomized concentration inequality. As applications, we obtain optimal Berry--Esseen bounds for $m$-dependent random variables and graph dependency.
We consider the self-normalized sums $T_{n}=\sum_{i=1}^{n}X_{i}Y_{i}/\sum_{i=1}^{n}Y_{i}$, where ${Y_{i} : i\geq 1}$ are non-negative i.i.d. random variables, and ${X_{i} : i\geq 1} $ are i.i.d. random variables, independent of ${Y_{i} : i \geq 1}$. The main result of the paper is that each subsequential limit law of T_n$ is continuous for any non-degenerate $X_1$ with finite expectation, if and only if $Y_1$ is in the centered Feller class.
For noncorrelated random variables, we study a concentration property of the family of distributions of normalized sums formed by sequences of times of a given large length.
Let $\bX=\{X_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ and $\bY=\{Y_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ be two independent random sequences. We obtain rates of convergence to the normal law of randomly weighted self-normalized sums $$ ψ_n(\bX,\bY)=\sum_{i=1}^nX_iY_i/V_n,\quad V_n=\sqrt{Y_1^2+...+Y_n^2}. $$ These rates are seen to hold for the convergence of a number of important statistics, such as for instance Student's $t$-statistic or the empirical correlation coefficient.
A well-known longstanding conjecture on the supremum of the tails of normalized sums of independent Rademacher random variables is disproved. A related conjecture, also recently disproved, is discussed.
We consider the generalized differential entropy of normalized sums of independent and identically distributed (IID) continuous random variables. We prove that the Rényi entropy and Tsallis entropy of order $α (α>0)$ of the normalized sum of IID continuous random variables with bounded moments are convergent to the corresponding Rényi entropy and Tsallis entropy of the Gaussian limit, and obtain sharp rates of convergence.
Let $\{X, X_n, n\geq 1\}$ be a sequence of independent identically distributed non-degenerate random variables. Put $S_0=0, S_n = \sum^n_{i=1} X_i$ and $V_n^2=\sum^n_{i=1} X_i^2, n\ge 1.$ A weak convergence theorem is established for the self-normalized partial sums processes $\{S_{[nt]}/V_n, 0\le t\le 1\}$ when $X$ belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law with index $α\in (0,2]$. The respective limiting distributions of the random variables ${\max_{1\le i\le n}|X_i|}/{S_n}$ and ${\max_{1\le i\le n}|X_i|}/{V_n}$ are also obtained under the same condition.
We consider an Ornstein-Uhleneck (OU) process associated to self-normalised sums in i.i.d. symmetric random variables from the domain of attraction of $N(0, 1)$ distribution. We proved the self-normalised sums converge to the OU process (in $C[0, \infty)$). Importance of this is that the OU process is a stationary process as opposed to the Brownian motion, which is a non-stationary distribution (see for example, the invariance principle proved by Csorgo et al (2003, Ann Probab) for self-normalised sums that converges to Brownian motion). The proof uses recursive equations similar to those that…
We study the joint limit behavior of sums, maxima and $\ell^p$-type moduli for samples taken from an $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued regularly varying stationary sequence with infinite variance. As a consequence, we can determine the distributional limits for ratios of sums and maxima, studentized sums, and other self-normalized quantities in terms of hybrid characteristic functions and Laplace transforms. These transforms enable one to calculate moments of the limits and to characterize the differences between the iid and stationary cases in terms of indices which describe effects of extremal clusterin…
Let $\{X_n;n\ge 1\}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables on a sub-linear expectation space $(Ω,\mathscr{H},\widehat{\mathbb E})$, $S_n=X_1+\ldots+X_n$. We consider the moments of $\max_{n\ge 1}|S_n|/\sqrt{2n\log\log n}$. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the moments to be finite are given. As an application, we obtain the law of the iterated logarithm for moving average processes of independent and identically distributed random variables.
Let {(X_i,Y_i)}_{i=1}^n be a sequence of independent bivariate random vectors. In this paper, we establish a refined Cramér type moderate deviation theorem for the general self-normalized sum \sum_{i=1}^n X_i/(\sum_{i=1}^n Y_i^2)^{1/2}, which unifies and extends the classical Cramér (1938) theorem and the self-normalized Cramér type moderate deviation theorems by Jing, Shao and Wang (2003) as well as the further refined version by Wang (2011). The advantage of our result is evidenced through successful applications to weakly dependent random variables and self-normalized winsorized mean. Speci…
We study Edgeworth expansions in limit theorems for self-normalized sums. Non-uniform bounds for expansions in the central limit theorem are established while only imposing minimal moment conditions. Within this result, we address the case of non-integer moments leading to a reduced remainder. Furthermore, we provide non-uniform bounds for expansions in local limit theorems. The enhanced tail-accuracy of our non-uniform bounds allows for deriving an Edgeworth-type expansion in the entropic central limit theorem as well as a central limit theorem in total variation distance for self-normalized …
We provide a unified, probabilistic approach using renewal theory to derive some novel limits of sums for the normalized binomial coefficients and for the normalized Eulerian numbers. We also investigate some corresponding results for their associated distributions -- the binomial distributions for the binomial coefficients and the Irwin-Hall distributions (uniform B-splines) for the Eulerian numbers.
We investigate the invariance principle for set-indexed partial sums of a stationary field $(X\_{k})\_{k\in\mathbb{Z}^{d}}$ of martingale-difference or independent random variables under standard-normalization or self-normalization respectively.
Let X_{n} be an integer valued Markov Chain with finite state space. Let S_{n}=\sum_{k=0}^{n}X_{k} and let L_{n}(x) be the number of times S_{k} hits x up to step n. Define the normalized local time process t_{n}(x) by t_{n}(x)=\frac{L_{n}(\sqrt{n}(x)}{\sqrt{n}}. The subject of this paper is to prove a functional, weak invariance principle for the normalized sequence t_{n}, i.e. we prove that under some assumptions about the Markov Chain, the normalized local times converge in distribution to the local time of the Brownian Motion.
In this paper we show that the continuous version of the self normalised process $Y_{n,p}(t)= S_n(t)/V_{n,p}+(nt-[nt])X_{[nt]+1}/V_{n,p}$ where $S_n(t)=\sum_{i=1}^{[nt]} X_i$ and $V_{(n,p)}= \sum_{i=1}^{n}|X_i|^p)^{\frac{1}{p}}$ and $X_i$ i.i.d. random variables belong to $DA(α)$, has a non trivial distribution iff $p=α=2$. The case for $2 > p > α$ and $p \le α< 2$ is systematically eliminated by showing that either of tightness or finite dimensional convergence to a non-degenerate limiting distribution does not hold. This work is an extension of the work by Csörgö et al. who showed Donsker's …
We derive in this article the exact non-asymptotical exponential and power estimates for self-normalized sums of centered independent random variables (r.v.) under natural norming. We will use also the theory of the so-called Grand Lebesgue Spaces (GLS) of random variables.
We show that the absolutely normalized, symmetric Birkhoff sums of positive integrable functions in infinite, ergodic systems never converge pointwise even though they may be almost surely bounded away from zero and infinity.
We study p-adic counterparts of stable distributions, that is limit distributions for sequences of normalized sums of independent identically distributed p-adic-valued random variables. In contrast to the classical case, non-degenerate limit distributions can be obtained only under certain assumptions on the asymptotic behaviour of the number of summands in the approximating sums. This asymptotics determines the ``exponent of stability''.
Correcting for skewness can result in more accurate tail probability approximations in the central limit theorem for sums of independent random variables. In this paper, we extend the theory to sums of local statistics of independent random variables and apply the result to $k$-runs, U-statistics, and subgraph counts in the Erdös-Rényi random graph. To prove our main result, we develop exponential concentration inequalities and higher-order Cramér-type moderate deviations via Stein's method.
This note investigates invariance principles for sums of N(nt) iid radom variables, where n is an integer, t is a positive real number and N(u) is a stochastic process with nonnegative integer values. We show that the sequence of sums of these random variables denoted S(n,t), when appropriately centered and normalized, weakly converges to a Gaussian process. We give sufficient conditions depending on the expectation of N(nt) which allows to rescale S(n,t) into a stochastic S(n,a(t)) weakly converging to a Brownian motion.
For self-normalized martingales with conditionally symmetric differences, de la Peña [A general class of exponential inequalities for martingales and ratios. Ann. Probab. 27, No.1, 537-564] established the Gaussian type exponential inequalities. Bercu and Touati [Exponential inequalities for self-normalized martingales with applications. Ann. Appl. Probab. 18: 1848-1869] extended de la Peña's inequalities to martingales with differences heavy on left. In this paper, we establish Bernstein type exponential inequalities for self-normalized martingales with differences bounded from below. Moreove…
In this paper, based on the initiation of the notion of negatively associated random variables under nonlinear probability, a strong limit theorem for weighted sums of random variables within the same frame is achieved without assumptions of independence and identical distribution, from which the Marcinkiewich-Zygmund type and Kolmogorov type strong laws of large numbers are derived. In addition, as applications of our results, Stranssen type invariance principles of negatively associated random variables and vertically independent random variables are proposed respectively.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of stochastic processes that are generated by sums of partial sums of i.i.d. random variables and their renewals. We conclude that these processes cannot converge weakly to any nondegenerate random element of the space $D[0,1]$. On the other hand we show that their properly normalized integrals as Vervaat-type stochastic processes converge weakly to a squared Wiener process. Moreover, we also deal with the asymptotic behaviour of the deviations of these processes, the so-called Vervaat-error type processes.
This paper studies the tail probability of weighted sums of the form $\sum_{i=1}^n c_i X_i$, where random variables $X_i$'s are either independent or pairwise quasi-asymptotical independent with heavy tails. Using $h$-insensitive function, the uniform asymptotic equivalence of the tail probabilities of $\sum_{i=1}^n c_iX_i$, $\max_{1\le k\le n}\sum_{i=1}^k c_iX_i$ and $\sum_{i=1}^n c_iX_i^+$ is established, where $X_i$'s are independent and follow the long-tailed distribution, and $c_i$'s take value in a broad interval. Some further uniform asymptotic results for the weighted sums of $X_i$'s w…
We establish deviation inequalities for the maxima of partial sums of a martingale differences sequence, and of a strictly stationary orthomartingale random field. These inequalities can be used to establish complete convergence of normalized maxima of partial sums.
Working with a rather general notion of independence, we provide a transference method which allows to compare the p-norm of sums of independent copies with the p-norm of sums of free copies. Our main technique is to construct explicit operator space Lp embeddings preserving independence to reduce the problem to L1, where some recent results by the first-named author can be used. We find applications for noncommutative Khincthine/Rosenthal type inequalities and for noncommutative Lp embedding theory.
We derive in this article the asymptotic behavior as well as non-asymptotical estimates of tail of distribution for self-normalized sums of random variables (r.v.) under natural classical norming. We investigate also the case of non-standard random norming function and the tail asymptotic for the maximum distribution for self-normalized statistics. We do not suppose the independence or identical distributionness of considered random variables, but we assume the existence and sufficient smoothness of its density. We show also the exactness of our conditions imposed on the considered random vari…
Based on a new analytical approach to the definition of additive free convolution on probability measures on the real line we prove free analogs of limit theorems for sums for non-identically distributed random variables in classical Probability Theory.
In this paper, we obtain some results on precise large deviations for non-random and random sums of widely dependent random variables with common dominatedly varying tail distribution or consistently varying tail distribution on $(-\infty,\infty)$. Then we apply the results to reinsurance and insurance and give some asymptotic estimates on proportional reinsurance, random-time ruin probability and the finite-time ruin probability.
We consider the probability distributions of values in the complex plane attained by Fourier sums of the form \sum_{j=1}^n a_j exp(-2πi j nu) /sqrt{n} when the frequency nu is drawn uniformly at random from an interval of length 1. If the coefficients a_j are i.i.d. drawn with finite third moment, the distance of these distributions to an isotropic two-dimensional Gaussian on C converges in probability to zero for any pseudometric on the set of distributions for which the distance between empirical distributions and the underlying distribution converges to zero in probability.
We take an $L_1$-dense class of functions $\Cal F$ on a measurable space $(X,\Cal X)$ together with a sequence of independent, identically distributed $X$-space valued random variables $ξ_1,\dots,ξ_n$ and give a good estimate on the tail distribution of $\sup_{f\in\Cal F}\sum_{j=1}^n f(ξ_j)$ if the expected values $E|f(ξ_1)|$ are very small for all $f\in\Cal F$. In a subsequent paper~[2] we shall give a sharp bound for the supremum of normalized sums of i.i.d. random variables in a more general case. But that estimate is a consequence of the results in this work.
We derive in this preprint the moment and exponential tail estimates, sufficient conditions for the Non-Central Limit Theorem (NCLT) in the ordinary one-dimensional space as well as in the space of continuous functions for the properly (natural) normalized multi-indexed sums of function of random variables, processes or fields (r.f.), on the other words V-statistics, parametric, in general case. We construct also some examples in order to show the exactness of obtained estimates. We will use the theory of the so-called degenerate approximation of the functions of several variables as well as t…
The paper introduces the notion of state for involutive bisemilattices, a variety which plays the role of algebraic counterpart of paraconsistent weak Kleene logic and whose elements are represented as Plonka sum of Boolean algebras. We investigate the relations between states over an involutive bisemilattice and probability measures over the (Boolean) algebras in the Plonka sum representation and, the direct limit of these algebras. Moreover, we study completition of involutive bisemilattices, as pseudometric spaces, and the topology induced by the pseudometric.
We consider the problem of finding the optimal upper bound for the tail probability of a sum of $k$ nonnegative, independent and identically distributed random variables with given mean $x$. For $k=1$ the answer is given by Markov's inequality and for $k=2$ the solution was found by Hoeffding and Shrikhande in 1955. We solve the problem for $k=3$ as well as for general $k$ and $x\leq1/(2k-1)$ by showing that it follows from the fractional version of an extremal graph theory problem of Erdős on matchings in hypergraphs.
Let $a_1, \dots, a_n \in \mathbb{R}$ satisfy $\sum_i a_i^2 = 1$, and let $\varepsilon_1, \ldots, \varepsilon_n$ be uniformly random $\pm 1$ signs and $X = \sum_{i=1}^{n} a_i \varepsilon_i$. It is conjectured that $X = \sum_{i=1}^{n} a_i \varepsilon_i$ has $\Pr[X \geq 1] \geq 7/64$. The best lower bound so far is $1/20$, due to Oleszkiewicz. In this paper we improve this to $\Pr[X \geq 1] \geq 6/64$.
Consider a random $d$-dimensional simplex whose vertices are $d+1$ random points sampled independently and uniformly from the unit sphere in $\mathbb R^d$. We show that the expected sum of solid angles at the vertices of this random simplex equals $\frac 18$ if $d=3$ and $\frac{539}{288π^2}-\frac 16$ if $d=4$. The angles are measured as proportions of the full solid angle which is normalized to be $1$. Similar formulae are obtained if the vertices of the simplex are uniformly distributed in the unit ball. These results are special cases of general formulae for the expected angle-sums of random…
This work prepares new probability bounds for sums of random, independent, Hermitian tensors. These probability bounds characterize large-deviation behavior of the extreme eigenvalue of the sums of random tensors. We extend Lapalace transform method and Lieb's concavity theorem from matrices to tensors, and apply these tools to generalize the classical bounds associated with the names Chernoff, Bennett, and Bernstein from the scalar to the tensor setting. Tail bounds for the norm of a sum of random rectangular tensors are also derived from corollaries of random Hermitian tensors cases. The pro…

This paper concerns the asymptotic behavior of a random variable $W_λ$ resulting from the summation of the functionals of a Gibbsian spatial point process over windows $Q_λ\uparrow R^d$. We establish conditions ensuring that $W_λ$ has volume order fluctuations, that is they coincide with the fluctuations of functionals of Poisson spatial point processes. We combine this result with Stein's method to deduce rates of normal approximation for $W_λ$, as $λ\to\infty$. Our general results establish variance asymptotics and central limit theorems for statistics of random geometric and related Euclide…
We prove Edgeworth type expansions for distribution functions of sums of free random variables under minimal moment conditions. The proofs are based on the analytic definition of free convolution. We apply these results to the expansion of densities to derive expansions for the free entropic distance of sums to the Wigner law.
The sub-linear expectation or called G-expectation is a nonlinear expectation having advantage of modeling non-additive probability problems and the volatility uncertainty in finance. Let $\{X_n;n\ge 1\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables in a sub-linear expectation space $(Ω, \mathscr{H}, \widehat{\mathbb E})$. Denote $S_n=\sum_{k=1}^n X_k$ and $V_n^2=\sum_{k=1}^n X_k^2$. In this paper, a moderate deviation for self-normalized sums, that is, the asymptotic capacity of the event $\{S_n/V_n \ge x_n \}$ for $x_n=o(\sqrt{n})$, is found both for identically distributed random variables…
In this paper, we establish an extension of a noncommutative Bennett inequality with a parameter $1\leq r\leq2$ and use it together with some noncommutative techniques to establish a Rosenthal inequality. We also present a noncommutative Hoeffding inequality as follows: Let $(\mathfrak{M}, τ)$ be a noncommutative probability space, $\mathfrak{N}$ be a von Neumann subalgebra of $\mathfrak{M}$ with the corresponding conditional expectation $\mathcal{E}_{\mathfrak{N}}$ and let subalgebras $\mathfrak{N}\subseteq\mathfrak{A}_j\subseteq\mathfrak{M}\,\,(j=1, \cdots, n)$ be successively independent ov…
In this paper, we investigate the large deviations of sums of weighted random variables that are approximately independent, generalizing and improving some of the results of Montgomery and Odlyzko. We are motivated by examples arising from number theory, including the sequences $p^{it}$, $χ(p)$, $χ_d(p)$, $λ_f(p)$, and $\text{Kl}_q(a-n, b)$; where $p$ ranges over the primes, $t$ varies in a large interval, $χ$ varies among all characters modulo $q$, $χ_d$ varies over quadratic characters attached to fundamental discriminants $|d|\leq x$, $λ_f(n)$ are the Fourier coefficients of holomorphic cus…
Multiplicative cascades, under weak or strong disorder, refer to sequences of positive random measures $μ_{n,β}, n = 1,2,\dots$, parameterized by a positive disorder parameter $β$, and defined on the Borel $σ$-field ${\mathcal B}$ of $\partial T = \{0,1,\dots b-1\}^\infty$ for the product topology. The normalized cascade is defined by the corresponding sequence of random probability measures $prob_{n,β}:= Z_{n,β}^{-1}μ_{n,β}, n = 1,2\dots,$ normalized to a probability by the partition function $Z_{n,β}$. In this note, a recent result of Madaule (2011) is used to explicitly construct a family o…
Let $(\mathbf{B}, \|\cdot\|)$ be a real separable Banach space. Let $φ(\cdot)$ and $ψ(\cdot)$ be two continuous and increasing functions defined on $[0, \infty)$ such that $φ(0) = ψ(0) = 0$, $\lim_{t \rightarrow \infty} φ(t) = \infty$, and $\frac{ψ(\cdot)}{φ(\cdot)}$ is a nondecreasing function on $[0, \infty)$. Let $\{V_{n};~n \geq 1 \}$ be a sequence of independent and symmetric {\bf B}-valued random variables. In this note, we establish a probability inequality for sums of independent {\bf B}-valued random variables by showing that for every $n \geq 1$ and all $t \geq 0$, \[ \mathbb{P}\left…
