In this paper, we propose a temporal group alignment and fusion network to enhance the quality of compressed videos by using the long-short term correlations between frames. The proposed model consists of the intra-group feature alignment (IntraGFA) module, the inter-group feature fusion (InterGFF) module, and the feature enhancement (FE) module. We form the group of pictures (GoP) by selecting frames from the video according to their temporal distances to the target enhanced frame. With this grouping, the composed GoP can contain either long- or short-term correlated information of neighboring frames. We design the IntraGFA module to align the features of frames of each GoP to eliminate the motion existing between frames. We construct the InterGFF module to fuse features belonging to different GoPs and finally enhance the fused features with the FE module to generate high-quality video frames. The experimental results show that our proposed method achieves up to 0.05dB gain and lower complexity compared to the state-of-the-art method.

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG), which aims at measuring heart activities without any contact, has great potential in many applications (e.g., remote healthcare). Existing rPPG approaches rely on analyzing very fine details of facial videos, which are prone to be affected by video compression. Here we propose a two-stage, end-to-end method using hidden rPPG information enhancement and attention networks, which is the first attempt to counter video compression loss and recover rPPG signals from highly compressed videos. The method includes two parts: 1) a Spatio-Temporal Video Enhancement Ne…
Lossy image compression is pervasively conducted to save communication bandwidth, resulting in undesirable compression artifacts. Recently, extensive approaches have been proposed to reduce image compression artifacts at the decoder side; however, they require a series of architecture-identical models to process images with different quality, which are inefficient and resource-consuming. Besides, it is common in practice that compressed images are with unknown quality and it is intractable for existing approaches to select a suitable model for blind quality enhancement. In this paper, we propo…

The past few years have witnessed fast development in video quality enhancement via deep learning. Existing methods mainly focus on enhancing the objective quality of compressed video while ignoring its perceptual quality. In this paper, we focus on enhancing the perceptual quality of compressed video. Our main observation is that enhancing the perceptual quality mostly relies on recovering high-frequency sub-bands in wavelet domain. Accordingly, we propose a novel generative adversarial network (GAN) based on multi-level wavelet packet transform (WPT) to enhance the perceptual quality of comp…

In this paper, we propose a deformable convolution-based generative adversarial network (DCNGAN) for perceptual quality enhancement of compressed videos. DCNGAN is also adaptive to the quantization parameters (QPs). Compared with optical flows, deformable convolutions are more effective and efficient to align frames. Deformable convolutions can operate on multiple frames, thus leveraging more temporal information, which is beneficial for enhancing the perceptual quality of compressed videos. Instead of aligning frames in a pairwise manner, the deformable convolution can process multiple frames…
Recent advancements in deep learning techniques have significantly improved the quality of compressed videos. However, previous approaches have not fully exploited the motion characteristics of compressed videos, such as the drastic change in motion between video contents and the hierarchical coding structure of the compressed video. This study proposes a novel framework that leverages the low-delay configuration of video compression to enhance the existing state-of-the-art method, BasicVSR++. We incorporate a context-adaptive video fusion method to enhance the final quality of compressed vide…
Image defocus is inherent in the physics of image formation caused by the optical aberration of lenses, providing plentiful information on image quality. Unfortunately, existing quality enhancement approaches for compressed images neglect the inherent characteristic of defocus, resulting in inferior performance. This paper finds that in compressed images, significantly defocused regions have better compression quality, and two regions with different defocus values possess diverse texture patterns. These observations motivate our defocus-aware quality enhancement (DAQE) approach. Specifically, …

In real-world applications, such as sharing photos on social media platforms, images are always not only sub-sampled but also heavily compressed thus often containing various artefacts. Simple methods for enhancing the resolution of such images will exacerbate the artefacts, rendering them visually objectionable. In spite of its high practical values, super-resolving compressed images is not well studied in the literature. In this paper, we propose a novel compressed image super resolution (CISR) framework based on parallel and series integration of artefacts removal and resolution enhancement…
Over the past few decades, underwater image enhancement has attracted increasing amount of research effort due to its significance in underwater robotics and ocean engineering. Research has evolved from implementing physics-based solutions to using very deep CNNs and GANs. However, these state-of-art algorithms are computationally expensive and memory intensive. This hinders their deployment on portable devices for underwater exploration tasks. These models are trained on either synthetic or limited real world datasets making them less practical in real-world scenarios. In this paper we propos…

In the age of streaming and surveillance compressed video enhancement has become a problem in need of constant improvement. Here, we investigate a way of improving the Multi-Frame Quality Enhancement approach. This approach consists of making use of the frames that have the peak quality in the region to improve those that have a lower quality in that region. This approach consists of obtaining quantized data from the videos using a deep belief network. The quantized data is then fed into the MF-CNN architecture to improve the compressed video. We further investigate the impact of using a Bi-LS…
In recent years deep learning methods have shown great superiority in compressed video quality enhancement tasks. Existing methods generally take the raw video as the ground truth and extract practical information from consecutive frames containing various artifacts. However, they do not fully exploit the valid information of compressed and raw videos to guide the quality enhancement for compressed videos. In this paper, we propose a unique Valid Information Guidance scheme (VIG) to enhance the quality of compressed videos by mining valid information from both compressed videos and raw videos.…

In this challenge, the new Large-scale Diverse Video (LDV) dataset is employed. The challenge has three tracks. Tracks 1 and 2 aim at enhancing the videos compressed by HEVC at a fixed QP, while Track 3 is designed for enhancing the videos compressed by x265 at a fixed bit-rate. Besides, the quality enhancement of Tracks 1 and 3 targets at improving the fidelity (PSNR), and Track 2 targets at enhancing the perceptual quality. The three tracks totally attrac…
Compressed sensing MRI is a classic inverse problem in the field of computational imaging, accelerating the MR imaging by measuring less k-space data. The deep neural network models provide the stronger representation ability and faster reconstruction compared with "shallow" optimization-based methods. However, in the existing deep-based CS-MRI models, the high-level semantic supervision information from massive segmentation-labels in MRI dataset is overlooked. In this paper, we proposed a segmentation-aware deep fusion network called SADFN for compressed sensing MRI. The multilayer feature ag…
The past few years have witnessed great success in applying deep learning to enhance the quality of compressed image/video. The existing approaches mainly focus on enhancing the quality of a single frame, ignoring the similarity between consecutive frames. In this paper, we investigate that heavy quality fluctuation exists across compressed video frames, and thus low quality frames can be enhanced using the neighboring high quality frames, seen as Multi-Frame Quality Enhancement (MFQE). Accordingly, this paper proposes an MFQE approach for compressed video, as a first attempt in this direction…

The attention module exploits global receptive fields that can capture and align long-range correlations between consecutive frames, which can be beneficial for enhancing perceptual quality of videos. The frame to be enhanced is fed into the deep network together with its neighboring frames, and in the first stage features at different depths are extracted. …

Convolutional neural networks have achieved excellent results in compressed video quality enhancement task in recent years. State-of-the-art methods explore the spatiotemporal information of adjacent frames mainly by deformable convolution. However, offset fields in deformable convolution are difficult to train, and its instability in training often leads to offset overflow, which reduce the efficiency of correlation modeling. In this work, we propose a transformer-based compressed video quality enhancement (TVQE) method, consisting of Swin-AutoEncoder based Spatio-Temporal feature Fusion (SST…

In recent years, display intensity and contrast have increased considerably. Many displays support high dynamic range (HDR) and 10-bit color depth. Since high bit-depth is an emerging technology, video content is still largely shot and transmitted with a bit depth of 8 bits or less per color component. Insufficient bit-depths produce distortions called false contours or banding, and they are visible on high contrast screens. To deal with such distortions, researchers have proposed algorithms for bit-depth enhancement (dequantization). Such techniques convert videos with low bit-depth (LBD) to …

In this paper, we propose a quality enhancement network of versatile video coding (VVC) compressed videos by jointly exploiting spatial details and temporal structure (SDTS). The proposed network consists of a temporal structure fusion subnet and a spatial detail enhancement subnet. The former subnet is used to estimate and compensate the temporal motion across frames, and the latter subnet is used to reduce the compression artifacts and enhance the reconstruction quality of compressed video. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our SDTS-based method.

This report presents the results of a multi-scale wavelet based scheme for single image de-hazing and underwater image enhancement. The scheme is fast and highly localized in addition to global enhancement of hazy images. A PDE-based formulation enables additional versatility as the iterative nature allows more flexibility for various types of images. Visual and objective results from experiments indicate that the proposed approach competes favourably or surpasses most of the state-of-the-art approaches.

Recently, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully used in many computer vision problems, and so does underwater image enhancement. There are many deep-learning-based methods with impressive performance for underwater image enhancement, but their memory and model parameter costs are hindrances in practical application. To address this issue, we propose a lightweight adaptive f…
A novel network for enhancement to underwater images is proposed in this paper. It contains a Reinforcement Fusion Module for Haar wavelet images (RFM-Haar) based on Reinforcement Fusion Unit (RFU), which is used to fuse an original image and some important information within it. Fusion is achieved for better enhancement. As this network make "Haar Images into Fusion Images", it is called HIFI-Net. The experimental results show the proposed HIFI-Net performs best among many state-of-the-art methods on three datasets at three normal metrics and a new metric.

The past decade has witnessed great success in applying deep learning to enhance the quality of compressed video. However, the existing approaches aim at quality enhancement on a single frame, or only using fixed neighboring frames. Thus they fail to take full advantage of the inter-frame correlation in the video. This paper proposes the Quality-Gated Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (QG-ConvLSTM) network with bi-directional recurrent structure to fully exploit the advantageous information in a large range of frames. More importantly, due to the obvious quality fluctuation among compressed…
