In real-world applications, such as sharing photos on social media platforms, images are always not only sub-sampled but also heavily compressed thus often containing various artefacts. Simple methods for enhancing the resolution of such images will exacerbate the artefacts, rendering them visually objectionable. In spite of its high practical values, super-resolving compressed images is not well studied in the literature. In this paper, we propose a novel compressed image super resolution (CISR) framework based on parallel and series integration of artefacts removal and resolution enhancement. Based on a mathematical inference model for estimating a clean low-resolution (LR) image and a clean high-resolution (HR) image from a down-sampled and compressed observation, we have designed a CISR architecture consisting of two deep neural network modules: the artefacts removal module (ARM) and the resolution enhancement module (REM). The ARM and the REM work in parallel with both taking the compressed LR image as their inputs, at the same time they also work in series with the REM taking the output of the ARM as one of its inputs and the ARM taking the output of the REM as its other input. A technique called unfolding is introduced to recursively suppress the compression artefacts and restore the image resolution. A unique feature of our CISR system is that it exploits the parallel and series connections between the ARM and the REM, and recursive optimization to reduce the model's dependency on specific types of degradation thus making it possible to train a single model to super-resolve images compressed by different methods to different qualities. Lossy image compression is pervasively conducted to save communication bandwidth, resulting in undesirable compression artifacts. Recently, extensive approaches have been proposed to reduce image compression artifacts at the decoder side; however, they require a series of architecture-identical models to process images with different quality, which are inefficient and resource-consuming. Besides, it is common in practice that compressed images are with unknown quality and it is intractable for existing approaches to select a suitable model for blind quality enhancement. In this paper, we propo…

Compressed Image Super-resolution has achieved great attention in recent years, where images are degraded with compression artifacts and low-resolution artifacts. Since the complex hybrid distortions, it is hard to restore the distorted image with the simple cooperation of super-resolution and compression artifacts removing. In this paper, we take a step forward to propose the Hierarchical Swin Transformer (HST) network to restore the low-resolution compressed image, which jointly captures the hierarchical feature representations and enhances each-scale representation with Swin transformer, re…

Compression plays an important role on the efficient transmission and storage of images and videos through band-limited systems such as streaming services, virtual reality or videogames. However, compression unavoidably leads to artifacts and the loss of the original information, which may severely degrade the visual quality. For these reasons, quality enhancement of compressed images has become a popular research topic. While most state-of-the-art image restoration methods are based on convolutional neural networks, other transformers-based methods such as SwinIR, show impressive performance …
In recent years, much research has been conducted on image super-resolution (SR). To the best of our knowledge, however, few SR methods were concerned with compressed images. The SR of compressed images is a challenging task due to the complicated compression artifacts, while many images suffer from them in practice. The intuitive solution for this difficult task is to decouple it into two sequential but independent subproblems, i.e., compression artifacts reduction (CAR) and SR. Nevertheless, some useful details may be removed in CAR stage, which is contrary to the goal of SR and makes the SR…
In recent years, tons of research has been conducted on Single Image Super-Resolution (SISR). However, to the best of our knowledge, few of these studies are mainly focused on compressed images. A problem such as complicated compression artifacts hinders the advance of this study in spite of its high practical values. To tackle this problem, we proposed CISRNet; a network that employs a two-stage coarse-to-fine learning framework that is mainly optimized for Compressed Image Super-Resolution Problem. Specifically, CISRNet consists of two main subnetworks; the coarse and refinement network, whe…

A series of methods have been proposed to reconstruct an image from compressively sensed random measurement, but most of them have high time complexity and are inappropriate for patch-based compressed sensing capture, because of their serious blocky artifacts in the restoration results. In this paper, we present a non-iterative image reconstruction method from patch-based compressively sensed random measurement. Our method features two cascaded networks based on residual convolution neural network to learn the end-to-end full image restoration, which is capable of reconstructing image patches …

In this paper, we design a full-reference image quality assessment metric SwinIQA to measure the perceptual quality of compressed images in a learned Swin distance space. It is known that the compression artifacts are usually non-uniformly distributed w…

Lossy compression introduces complex compression artifacts, particularly the blocking artifacts, ringing effects and blurring. Existing algorithms either focus on removing blocking artifacts and produce blurred output, or restores sharpened images that are accompanied with ringing effects. Inspired by the deep convolutional networks (DCN) on super-resolution, we formulate a compact and efficient network for seamless attenuation of different compression artifacts. We also demonstrate that a deeper model can be effectively trained with the features learned in a shallow network. Following a simil…

Image compression is one of the essential methods of image processing. Its most prominent advantage is the significant reduction of image size allowing for more efficient storage and transfer. However, lossy compression is associated with the loss of some image details in favor of reducing its size. In compressed images, the deficiencies are manifested by noticeable defects in the form of artifacts; the most common are block artifacts, ringing effect, or blur. In this article, we propose three models of fully convolutional networks with different configurations and examine their abilities in r…

Compressed video super-resolution (VSR) aims to restore high-resolution frames from compressed low-resolution counterparts. Most recent VSR approaches often enhance an input frame by borrowing relevant textures from neighboring video frames. Although some progress has been made, there are grand challenges to effectively extract and transfer high-quality textures from compressed videos where most frames are usually highly degraded. In this paper, we propose a novel Frequency-Transformer for compressed video super-resolution (FTVSR) that conducts self-attention over a joint space-time-frequency …
In this work we propose a novel postprocessing technique for compression-artifact reduction. Our approach is based on posing this task as an inverse problem, with a regularization that leverages on existing state-of-the-art image denoising algorithms. We rely on the recently proposed Plug-and-Play Prior framework, suggesting the solution of general inverse problems via Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM), leading to a sequence of Gaussian denoising steps. A key feature in our scheme is a linearization of the compression-decompression process, so as to get a formulation that can …
Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of image storage and transmission systems, in which image compression plays an important role. Generally speaking, image compression algorithms are developed to ensure good visual quality at limited bit rates. However, due to the different compression optimization methods, the compressed images may have different levels of quality, which needs to be evaluated quantificationally. Nowadays, the mainstream full-reference (FR) metrics are effective to predict the quality of compressed images at coarse-grained levels (the bit rates differences of co…
Motion blur is a common photography artifact in dynamic environments that typically comes jointly with the other types of degradation. This paper reviews the NTIRE 2021 Challenge on Image Deblurring. In this challenge report, we describe the challenge specifics and the evaluation results from the 2 competition tracks with the proposed solutions. While both the tracks aim to recover a high-quality clean image from a blurry image, different artifacts are jointly involved. In track 1, the blurry images are in a low resolution while track 2 images are compressed in JPEG format. In each competition…

Scaling and lossy coding are widely used in video transmission and storage. To address this problem, we present a mixed-resolution coding framework, which cooperates with a reference-based DCNN. In this novel coding chain, the reference-based DCNN learns the direct mapping from low-resolution (LR) compressed video to their high-resolution (HR) clean version at the decoder side. Our method uses existing state-of-the-art SR models and adds flexibility to upscale input data with varying levels of detail across the domain, instead of only uniform grid data that are supported in previous approaches. The key is to use a hierarchy of SR NNs, each trained to perform 2x SR between two levels of detail, with a hierarchical …

Recently, methods were proposed to mine spatiotemporal information via utilizing multiple neighboring frames as reference frames. However, these post-processing methods take advantage of adjacent frames directly, but neglect the information of the video itself, which can be exploited. In this paper, we propose an effective reference frame proposal strategy to boost the performance of the existing multi-frame approaches. Besides, we introdu…

Although deep convolutional neural network has been proved to efficiently eliminate coding artifacts caused by the coarse quantization of traditional codec, it's difficult to train any neural network in front of the encoder for gradient's back-propagation. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end image compression framework based on convolutional neural network to resolve the problem of non-differentiability of the quantization function in the standard codec. First, the feature description neural network is used to get a valid description in the low-dimension space with respect to the ground-tr…
Most video super-resolution methods focus on restoring high-resolution video frames from low-resolution videos without taking into account compression. However, most videos on the web or mobile devices are compressed, and the compression can be severe when the bandwidth is limited. In this paper, we propose a new compression-informed video super-resolution model to restore high-resolution content without introducing artifacts caused by compression. The proposed model consists of three modules for video super-resolution: bi-directional recurrent warping, detail-preserving flow estimation, and L…
Fluorine-19 (19F) MRI of injected perfluorocarbon emulsions (PFCs) allows for the non-invasive quantification of inflammation and cell tracking, but suffers from a low signal-to-noise ratio and extended scan time. To address this limitation, we tested the hypothesis that a 19F MRI pulse sequence that combines a specific undersampling regime with signal averaging has increased sensitivity and robustness against motion artifacts compared to a non-averaged fully-sampled dataset, when both are reconstructed with compressed sensing. To this end, numerical simulations and phantom experiments were pe…

To address this problem, we propose a deep convolutional Laplacian Pyramid Compressed Sensing Network (LapCSNet) for CS, which consists of a sampling sub-network and a reconstruction sub-network. In the sampling sub-network, we utilize a convoluti…

The long acquisition time has limited the accessibility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) because it leads to patient discomfort and motion artifacts. Although several MRI techniques have been proposed to reduce the acquisition time, compressed sensing in magnetic resonance imaging (CS-MRI) enables fast acquisition without compromising SNR and resolution. However, existing CS-MRI methods suffer from the challenge of aliasing artifacts. This challenge results in the noise-like textures and missing the fine details, thus leading to unsatisfactory reconstruction performance. To tackle this chal…

Video compression artifact reduction aims to recover high-quality videos from low-quality compressed videos. Most existing approaches use a single neighboring frame or a pair of neighboring frames (preceding and/or following the target frame) for this task. Furthermore, as frames of high quality overall may contain low-quality patches, and high-quality patches may exist in frames of low quality overall, current methods focusing on nearby peak-quality frames (PQFs) may miss high-quality details in low-quality frames. To remedy these shortcomings, in this paper we propose a novel end-to-end deep…

Lossy compression brings artifacts into the compressed image and degrades the visual quality. In recent years, many compression artifacts removal methods based on convolutional neural network (CNN) have been developed with great success. However, these methods usually train a model based on one specific value or a small range of quality factors. Obviously, if the test image's quality factor does not match to the assumed value range, then degraded performance will be resulted. With this motivation and further consideration of practical usage, a highly robust compression artifacts removal networ…

Parallel imaging accelerates MRI data acquisition by acquiring additional sensitivity information with an array of receiver coils, resulting in fewer phase encoding steps. Because of fewer data requirements than parallel imaging, compressed sensing magnetic resonance imaging (CS-MRI) has gained popularity in the field of medical imaging. Parallel imaging and compressed sensing (CS) both reduce the amount of data captured in the k-space, which speeds up traditional MRI acquisition. As acquisition time is inversely proportional to sample count, forming an image from reduced k-space samples resul…

Deep network-based image Compressed Sensing (CS) has attracted much attention in recent years. However, the existing deep network-based CS schemes either reconstruct the target image in a block-by-block manner that leads to serious block artifacts or train the deep network as a black box that brings about limited insights of image prior knowledge. In this paper, a novel image CS framework using non-local neural network (NL-CSNet) is proposed, which utilizes the non-local self-similarity priors with deep network to improve the reconstruction quality.
