We perform Monte Carlo simulations of stationary planar accretion of a collisionless gas onto a moving Schwarzschild black hole. In this work -- a sequel to our previous paper on the Monte Carlo method for stationary general-relativistic Vlasov systems -- we demonstrate that our approach can be extended beyond the simplifying assumptions of the spherical symmetry or axial symmetry in the planar case. Our method of computing observable quantities, such as the particle current density, can be regarded as a rigorous coarse graining scheme, adapted to a numerical grid. Main difficulties are related to the appropriate parametrization of particle trajectories and a selection of parameters consistent with assumed requirements on the distribution function.
The spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system in Schwarzschild coordinates (i.e. polar slicing and areal radial coordinate) is considered. An improved continuation criterion for global existence of classical solutions is given. Two other types of criteria which prevent finite time blow-up are also given.
New developments related to our recent study of the accretion of the Vlasov gas onto a moving Schwarzschild black hole are presented. We discuss the low-temperature limit of the mas accretion rate and a simple Monte Carlo simulation used to check the results obtained in this limit. We also comment on several numerical aspects related with momentum integrals expressing the particle density current and the particle density.
Given a static Schwarzschild spacetime of ADM mass M, it is well-known that no ingoing causal geodesic starting in the outer domain r>2M will cross the event horizon r=2M in finite Schwarzschild time. In the present paper we show that in gravitational collapse of Vlasov matter this behaviour can be very different. We construct initial data for which a black hole forms and all matter crosses the event horizon as Schwarzschild time goes to infinity, and we show that this is a necessary condition for geodesic completeness of the event horizon. In addition to a careful analysis of the asymptotic b…
We derive an exact, axially symmetric solution representing stationary accretion of the relativistic, collisionless Vlasov gas onto a moving Schwarzschild black hole. The gas is assumed to be in thermal equilibrium at infinity, where it obeys the Maxwell-Jüttner distribution. The Vlasov equation is solved analytically in terms of suitable action-angle variables. We provide explicit expressions for the particle current density and accretion rates. In the limit of infinite asymptotic temperature of the gas, we recover the qualitative picture known form the relativistic Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accr…
We construct a one-parameter family of static and spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system bifurcating from the Schwarzschild spacetime. The constructed solutions have the property that the spatial support of the matter is a finite, spherically symmetric shell located away from the black hole. Our proof is mostly based on the analysis of the set of trapped timelike geodesics and of the effective potential energy for static spacetimes close to Schwarzschild. This provides an alternative approach to the construction of static solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system in a neig…
We construct spherically symmetric, static solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system with non-vanishing cosmological constant $Λ$. The results are divided as follows. For small $Λ>0$ we show existence of globally regular solutions which coincide with the Schwarzschild-deSitter solution in the exterior of the matter sources. For $Λ<0$ we show via an energy estimate the existence of globally regular solutions which coincide with the Schwarzschild-Anti-deSitter solution in the exterior vacuum region. We also construct solutions with a Schwarzschild singularity at the center regardless of the sign o…

We deal with phantom energy accretion onto the Schwarzschild de-Sitter black hole. The energy flux conservation, relativistic Bernoulli equation and mass flux conservation equation are formulated to discuss the phantom accretion. We discuss the conditions for critical accretion. It is found that mass of the black hole decreases due to phantom accretion. There exist two critical points which lie in the exterior of horizons (black hole and cosmological horizons). The results for the phantom energy accretion onto the Schwarzschild black hole can be recovered by taking $Λ\rightarrow0$.
We review results on the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We focus on a recent result where we found explicit conditions on the initial data which guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. Among these data there are data such that the corresponding solutions exist globally in Schwarzschild coordinates. We put these results into a more general context, and we include arguments which show that the spacetimes we obtain satisfy the weak cosmic censorship conjecture and contain a black hole in the sense of suitable mathematical definitions of these …
We investigate accretion of dark matter onto a moving Schwarzschild black hole. The dark matter is modeled by the collisionless Vlasov gas, assumed to be in thermal equilibrium at infinity. We derive an exact stationary solution and provide a compact formula for the mass accretion rate. In general, the mass accretion rate is a nonmonotonic function of the black hole velocity. A monotonic relation (the accretion rate proportional to the Lorentz factor associated with the velocity of the black hole) is obtained for high asymptotic temperatures of the gas. The derived accretion rates are relevant…
We study the linear stability of a nongravitating, steady-state, spherically symmetric ghost condensate accreting onto a Schwarzschild black hole using two methods. The first one is based on the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor of the perturbations (whose propagation is determined by the effective metric), and involves the determination of the sign of the time derivative of the energy of the perturbations. The second method employs the positivity of the effective potential. Both methods yield the result that the system is stable, but the second one is less practical, since it involve…
We have studied accretion of the dark matter and dark energy onto of $(n+2)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole and Morris-Thorne wormhole. The mass and the rate of change of mass for $(n+2)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole and Morris-Thorne wormhole have been found. We have assumed some candidates of dark energy like holographic dark energy, new agegraphic dark energy, quintessence, tachyon, DBI-essence, etc. The black hole mass and the wormhole mass have been calculated in term of redshift when dark matter and above types of dark energies accrete onto them separately. We have shown th…
We investigate stationary spherically symmetric accretion of the relativistic Vlasov gas on Reissner-Nordström black holes. The model is based on a recent analysis done by Rioseco and Sarbach for the Schwarzschild spacetime. Both models share many common features: The gas characterized by the Maxwell-Jüttner distribution at infinity is no longer in thermal equilibrium in the vicinity of the black hole. The radial pressure at the black-hole horizon can be even an order of magnitude smaller than the tangential pressure. Quantitative characteristics of the Reissner-Nordström model depend on the c…
The spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system is considered in Schwarzschild coordinates and in maximal-isotropic coordinates. An open problem is the issue of global existence for initial data without size restrictions. The main purpose of the present work is to propose a method of approach for general initial data, which improves the regularity of the terms that need to be estimated compared to previous methods. We prove that global existence holds outside the centre in both these coordinate systems. In the Schwarzschild case we improve the bound on the momentum support obtained in \cite{R…
We study time evolution of sub-Keplerian transonic accretion flows onto black holes using a general relativistic numerical simulation code. We perform simulations in Schwarzschild spacetime. We first compare one-dimensional simulation results with theoretical results and validate the performance of our code. Next, we present results of axisymmetric, two-dimensional simulation of advective flows. We find that even in this case, for which no complete theoretical analysis is present in the literature, steady state shock formation is possible.
The equations governing general relativistic, spherically symmetric, hydrodynamic accretion of polytropic fluid onto black holes are solved in Schwarzschild metric to investigate some of the transonic properties of the flow. Only stationary solutions are discussed. For such accretion, it has been shown that real physical sonic points may form {\it even for flow with $γ< {4/3}$ or $γ> {5/3}$}. Behaviour of some flow variables in the close vicinity of the event horizon are studied as a function of specific energy and polytropic index of the flow.
We construct a simple accretion model of a rotating pressureless gas sphere onto a Schwarzschild black hole. We show how to build analytic solutions in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions. This construction represents a general relativistic generalisation of the Newtonian accretion model first proposed by Ulrich (1976). In exactly the same form as it occurs for the Newtonian case, the flow naturally predicts the existence of an equatorial rotating accretion disc about the hole. However, the radius of the disc increases monotonically without limit as the flow reaches its maximum allowed angular …
We investigate stationary accretion of the collisionless Vlasov gas onto the Kerr black hole, occurring in the equatorial plane. The solution is specified by imposing asymptotic boundary conditions: at infinity the gas obeys the Maxwell-Jüttner distribution, restricted to the equatorial plane (both in positions and momenta). In the vicinity of the black hole, the motion of the gas is governed by the spacetime geometry. We compute accretion rates of the rest-mass, the energy, and the angular momentum, as well as the particle number surface density, focusing on the dependence of these quantities…
Quantum gravity corrections to accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole are considered in the context of asymptotically safe scenario. The possible positions of the critical points are discussed and the general conditions for critical points are obtained. The explicit expressions for matter density compression and temperature profile both below the critical radius and at the event horizon are derived. For polytropic matter, we determine the corrected temperature and the integrated flux resulting from quantum gravity effects at the event horizon, which might be as a test of asymptotically safe…
We present the results of an exhaustive numerical study of fully relativistic non-axisymmetric Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto a moving Schwarzschild black hole. We have solved the equations of general relativistic hydrodynamics with a high-resolution shock-capturing numerical scheme based on a linearized Riemann solver. The numerical code was previously used to study axisymmetric flow configurations past a Schwarzschild hole. We have analyzed and discussed the flow morphology for a sample of asymptotically high Mach number models. The results of this work reveal that initially asymptotic uniform f…
We investigate the generation of electromagnetic and gravitational radiation in the vicinity of a perturbed Schwarzschild black hole. The gravitational perturbations and the electromagnetic field are studied by solving the Teukolsky master equation with sources, which we take to be locally charged, radially infalling, matter. Our results show that, in addition to the gravitational wave generated as the matter falls into the black hole, there is also a burst of electromagnetic radiation. This electromagnetic field has a characteristic set of quasinormal frequencies, and the gravitational radiat…
The spherically symmetric accretion onto a noncommutative (NC) inspired Schwarzschild black hole is treated for a polytropic fluid. The critical accretion rate $\dot{M}$, sonic speed $a_s$ and other flow parameters are generalised for the NC inspired black hole and compared with the results obtained for the standard Schwarzschild black holes. We also derive explicit expressions for gas compression ratios and temperature profiles below the accretion radius and at the event horizon. This analysis is a generalisation of Michel's solution to the NC geometry. Owing to the NC corrected black hole, t…
It is well known that quantum effects may lead to remove the intrinsic singularity point of back holes. Also, the quintessence scalar field is a candidate model for describing late-time acceleration expansion. Accordingly, Kazakov and Solodukhin considered the existence of back-reaction of the spacetime due to the quantum fluctuations of the background metric to deform Schwarzschild black hole, which led to change the intrinsic singularity of the black hole to a 2-sphere with a radius of the order of the Planck length. Also, Kiselev rewrote the Schwarzschild metric by taking into account the q…
We formulate and solve the problem of spherically symmetric, steady state, adiabatic accretion onto a Schwarzschild-like black hole obtained recently. We derive the general analytic expressions for the critical points, the critical velocity, the critical speed of sound, and subsequently the mass accretion rate. The case for polytropic gas is discussed in detail. We find the parameter characterizing the breaking of Lorentz symmetry will slow down the mass accretion rate, while has no effect on the gas compression and the temperature profile below the critical radius and at the event horizon.
In this paper we investigate the problem of ordinary baryonic matter accretion onto the noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild black hole. The fundamental equations governing the spherically symmetric steady state matter accretion are deduced. These equations are seen to be modified due to the presence of noncommutativity. The matter accretion rate is computed and is found to increase rapidly with the increase in strength of the noncommutative parameter. The sonic radius reduces while the sound speed at the sonic point increases with the increase in the strength of noncommutativity. Th…

We consider the stationary spherical accretion process of perfect fluids onto a class of spherically symmetric regular black holes corresponding to quantum-corrected Schwarzschild spacetimes. We show that the accretion rates can differ from the Schwarzschild case, suggesting that the de Sitter core inside these regular black holes, which indeed precludes the central singularity, can act for some cases as a sort of antigravitational source, decreasing the fluid's radial infall velocity in the accretion process, and for others as a gravitational enhancer, increasing the fluid flow into the black…
We consider the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We find explicit conditions on the initial data, with ADM mass M, such that the resulting spacetime has the following properties: there is a family of radially outgoing null geodesics where the area radius r along each geodesic is bounded by 2M, the timelike lines $r=c\in [0,2M]$ are incomplete, and for r>2M the metric converges asymptotically to the Schwarzschild metric with mass M. The initial data that we construct guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. We also give examples of such initial…
In this paper we study the accretion of dark energy onto a black hole in the cases that dark energy is equipped with a positive cosmological constant and when the space-time is described by a Schwarzschild-de Sitter metric. It is shown that, if confronted with current observational data, the results derived when no cosmological constant is present are once again obtained in both cases.
In the classical relativistic regime, the accretion of phantom energy onto a black hole reduces the mass of the black hole. In this context, we have investigated the evolution of a Schwarzschild black hole in the standard model of cosmology using the phantom-like modified variable Chaplygin gas and the viscous generalized Chaplygin gas. The corresponding expressions for accretion time scale and evolution of mass have been derived. Our results indicate that mass of the black hole will decrease if the accreting phantom Chaplygin gas violates the dominant energy condition and will increase in the…
Recent general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of accretion onto black holes have shown that, contrary to the basic assumptions of the Novikov-Thorne model, there can be substantial magnetic stress throughout the plunging region. Additional dissipation and radiation can therefore be expected. We use data from a particularly well-resolved simulation of accretion onto a non-spinning black hole to compute both the radiative efficiency of such a flow and its spectrum if all emitted light is radiated with a thermal spectrum whose temperature matches the local effective temperatu…
In this Letter, we examine the phantom energy accretion onto a Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole in Ho$\check{r}$ava Lifshitz gravity. To discuss the accretion process onto the black hole, the equations of phantom flow near the black hole have been derived. It is found that mass of the black hole decreases because of phantom accretion. We discuss the conditions for critical accretion. Graphically, it has been found that the critical accretion phenomena is possible for different values of parameters. The results for the Schwarzschild black hole can be recovered in the limiting case.
This paper deals with the steady-state polytropic fluid accretion onto a higher-dimensional Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m black hole. We formulate the generalized mass flux conservation equation, energy flux conservation and relativistic Bernoulli equation to discuss the accretion process. The critical accretion is investigated by finding critical radius, critical sound velocity and critical flow velocity. We also explore gas compression and temperature profiles to analyze the asymptotic behavior. It is found that the results for Schwarzschild black hole are recovered when $q=0$ in four dimensio…
We consider the most general static spherically symmetric black hole metric. The accretion of the fluid flow around the Van der Waal's black hole is investigated and we calculate the fluid's four-velocity, the critical point and the speed of sound during the accretion process. We also analyze the nature of the universe's density and the mass of the black hole during accretion of the fluid flow. The density of the fluid flow is also taken into account. We observe that the mass is related to redshift. We compare the accreting power of the Van der Waal's black hole with Schwarzschild black hole f…
We study acceleration of current-carrying string loops governed by the presence of an outer tension barrier and an inner angular momentum barrier in the field of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes. We restrict attention to the axisymmetric motion of string loops with energy high enough, when the string loop can overcome the gravitational attraction and escape to infinity. We demonstrate that string loops can be scattered near the black hole horizon, and the energy of string oscillations can be efficiently converted to the energy of their linear motion. Such a transmutation effect can potentia…
The entropy of the four dimensional Schwarzschild black hole is derived by mapping it onto a configuration of intersecting branes with four charges. This configuration is obtained by performing several boosts and dualities on a neutral black brane of M-theory to which the Schwarzschild black hole is related by trivial compactification. The infinite boost limit is well-defined and corresponds to extremality where the intersecting brane configuration is a marginal one on which a standard microscopic counting of the entropy can be safely performed. The result reproduces exactly the Bekenstein-Haw…
We examine the steady-state spherically symmetric accretion of relativistic fluids, with a polytropic equation of state, onto a higher dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. The mass accretion rate, critical radius, and flow parameters are determined and compared with results obtained in standard four dimensions. The accretion rate, $\dot{M}$, is an explicit function of the black hole mass, $M$, as well as the gas boundary conditions and the dimensionality, $D$, of the spacetime. We also find the asymptotic compression ratios and temperature profiles below the accretion radius and at the event …
In this paper we track the non-linear spherical evolution of a massless scalar field onto a Schwarzschild black hole space-time as a first approximation to the accretion of cosmologically motivated classical scalar fields. We perform an analysis related to wave packets described by wave number and width. We study various values of the wave number k, and found that for k = 0 and width packets bigger than the Schwarzschild radius, the absorption is not total. In the cases we studied for k > 0, the black hole absorbs the total amount of energy density of the scalar field moving toward the horizon…
We consider the effects of a cosmological constant on the dynamics of constant angular momentum discs orbiting Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes. The motivation behind this study is to investigate whether the presence of a radial force contrasting the black hole's gravitational attraction can influence the occurrence of the runaway instability, a robust feature of the dynamics of constant angular momentum tori in Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes. In addition to the inner cusp near the black hole horizon through which matter can accrete onto the black hole, in fact, a positive cosmological c…
The accretion of a spherically symmetric, collisionless kinetic gas cloud on to a Schwarzschild black hole is analysed. Whereas previous studies have treated this problem by specifying boundary conditions at infinity, here the properties of the gas are given at a sphere of finite radius. The corresponding steady-state solutions are computed using four different models with an increasing level of sophistication, starting with the purely radial infall of Newtonian particles and culminating with a fully general relativistic calculation in which individual particles have angular momentum. The resu…
We construct a general relativistic model for the accretion flow of a rotating finite cloud of non-interacting particles infalling onto a Schwarzschild black hole. The streamlines start at a spherical shell, where boundary conditions are fixed, and are followed down to the point at which they either cross the black hole horizon or become incorporated into an equatorial thin disc. Analytic expressions for the streamlines and the velocity field are given, in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions, under the assumptions of stationarity and ballistic motion. A novel approach allows us to describe all …
The entropy of a seven dimensional Schwarzschild black hole of arbitrary large radius is obtained by a mapping onto a near extremal self-dual three-brane whose partition function can be evaluated. The three-brane arises from duality after submitting a neutral blackbrane, from which the Schwarzschild black hole can be obtained by compactification, to an infinite boost in non compact eleven dimensional space-time and then to a Kaluza-Klein compactification. This limit can be defined in precise terms and yields the Bekenstein-Hawking value up to a factor of order one which can be set to be exactl…
This work presents a comprehensive and extensive study to illustrate how the geometrical configurations of low angular momentum axially symmetric general relativistic matter flow in Schwarzschild metric may influence the formation of energy preserving shocks for adiabatic/polytropic accretion as well as of temperature preserving dissipative shocks for for the isothermal accretion onto non-rotating astrophysical black holes. The dynamical and thermodynamic states of post shock polytropic and isothermal flow have been studied extensively for three possible matter geometries, and it has been thor…

Initial data for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system is constructed whose past evolution is regular and whose future evolution contains a black hole. This is the first example of initial data with these properties for the Einstein-matter system with a "realistic" matter model. One consequence of the result is that there exists a class of initial data for which the ratio of the Hawking mass $\open{m}=\open{m}(r)$ and the area radius $r$ is arbitrarily small everywhere, such that a black hole forms in the evolution. This result is in a sense analogous to the result for a scalar fiel…
The accretion of test fluids flowing onto a black hole is investigated. Particularly, by adopting a dynamical Hamiltonian approach, we are capable to find the critical points for various cases of black hole in conformal gravity. In these cases, we have analyzed the general solutions of accretion employing the isothermal equations of state. The steady state and spherically symmetric accretion of different test fluids onto the conformal gravity black hole has been considered. Further, we have classified these flows in the context of equations of state and the cases of conformal gravity black hol…
We consider stationary, axially symmetric toroids rotating around spinless black holes, assuming the general-relativistic Keplerian rotation law, in the first post-Newtonian approximation. Numerical investigation shows that the angular momentum accumulates almost exclusively within toroids. It appears that various types of dragging (anti-dragging) effects are positively correlated with the ratio $M_\mathrm{D}/m$ ($M_\mathrm{D}$ is the mass of a toroid and $m$ is the mass of the black hole) - moreover, their maxima are proportional to $M_\mathrm{D}/m$. The horizontal sizes of investigated toroi…
In our program of studying numerically the so-called Bondi-Hoyle accretion in the fully relativistic regime, we present here first results concerning the evolution of matter accreting supersonically onto a rotating (Kerr) black hole. These computations generalize previous results where the non-rotating (Schwarzschild) case was extensively considered. We parametrize our initial data by the asymptotic conditions for the fluid and explore the dependence of the solution on the angular momentum of the black hole. Towards quantifying the robustness of our numerical results, we use two different geom…
