In massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, how to reliably acquire downlink channel state information (CSI) with low overhead is challenging. In this work, by integrating the generative pre-trained Transformer (GPT) with federated-tuning, we propose a CSI-GPT approach to realize efficient downlink CSI acquisition. Specifically, we first propose a Swin Transformer-based channel acquisition network (SWTCAN) to acquire downlink CSI, where pilot signals, downlink channel estimation, and uplink CSI feedback are jointly designed. Furthermore, to solve the problem of insufficient training data, we propose a variational auto-encoder-based channel sample generator (VAE-CSG), which can generate sufficient CSI samples based on a limited number of high-quality CSI data obtained from the current cell. The CSI dataset generated from VAE-CSG will be used for pre-training SWTCAN. To fine-tune the pre-trained SWTCAN for improved performance, we propose an online federated-tuning method, where only a small amount of SWTCAN parameters are unfrozen and updated using over-the-air computation, avoiding the high communication overhead caused by aggregating the complete CSI samples from user equipment (UEs) to the BS for centralized fine-tuning. Simulation results verify the advantages of the proposed SWTCAN and the communication efficiency of the proposed federated-tuning method. Knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter side is one of the primary sources of information that can be used for the efficient allocation of wireless resources. Obtaining downlink (DL) CSI in Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) systems from uplink (UL) CSI is not as straightforward as in TDD systems. Therefore, users usually feed the DL-CSI back to the transmitter. To remove the need for feedback (and thus having less signaling overhead), we propose to use two recent deep neural network structures, i.e., convolutional neural networks and generative adversarial networks…
Transmitter channel state information (CSIT) is indispensable for the spectral efficiency gains offered by massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In a frequency-division-duplexing (FDD) massive MIMO system, CSIT is typically acquired through downlink channel estimation and user feedback, but as the number of antennas increases, the overhead for CSI training and feedback per user grows, leading to a decrease in spectral efficiency. In this paper, we show that, using uplink pilots in FDD, the downlink sum spectral efficiency gain with perfect downlink CSIT is achievable when the …
In order to unlock the full advantages of massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) in the downlink, channel state information (CSI) is required at the base station (BS) to optimize the beamforming matrices. In frequency division duplex (FDD) systems, full channel reciprocity does not hold, and CSI acquisition generally requires downlink pilot transmission followed by uplink feedback. Prior work proposed the end-to-end design of pilot transmission, feedback, and CSI estimation via deep learning. In this work, we introduce an enhanced end-to-end design that leverages partial uplink-downlink…
When operating massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) channels at different frequencies (frequency division duplex (FDD) operation), acquisition of channel state information (CSI) for downlink precoding is a major challenge. Since, barring transceiver impairments, both UL and DL CSI are determined by the physical environment surrounding transmitter and receiver, it stands to reason that, for a static environment, a mapping from UL CSI to DL CSI may exist. First, we propose to use various neural network (NN)-based approaches that learn this mapp…
Efficient channel state information at transmitter (CSIT) for frequency division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO can facilitate its backward compatibility with existing FDD cellular networks. To date, several CSIT estimation schemes have been proposed for FDD single-cell massive MIMO systems, but they fail to consider inter-cell-interference (ICI) and suffer from downlink pilot contamination in multi-cell scenario. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a compressive sensing (CS)-based CSIT estimation scheme to combat ICI in FDD multi-cell massive MIMO systems. Specifically, angle-domain massive…
To get channel state information (CSI) at a base station (BS), most of researches on massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems consider time division duplexing (TDD) to get benefit from the uplink and downlink channel reciprocity. Even in TDD, however, the BS still needs to transmit downlink training signals, which are referred to as channel state information reference signals (CSI-RSs) in the 3GPP standard, to support spatial multiplexing in practice. This is because there are many cases that the number of transmit antennas is less than the number of receive antennas at a user equ…
We investigate energy efficiency (EE) optimization for single-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink transmission with only statistical channel state information (CSI) available at the base station. We first show that beam domain transmission is favorable for energy efficiency in the massive MIMO downlink, by deriving a closed-form solution for the eigenvectors of the optimal transmit covariance matrix. With this conclusion, the EE optimization problem is reduced to a real-valued power allocation problem, which is much easier to tackle than the original large-dimensional c…

This paper investigates a learning solution for robust beamforming optimization in downlink multi-user systems. A base station (BS) identifies efficient multi-antenna transmission strategies only with imperfect channel state information (CSI) and its stochastic features. To this end, we propose a robust training algorithm where a deep neural network (DNN), which only accepts estimates and statistical knowledge of the perfect CSI, is optimized to fit to real-world propagation environment. Consequently, the trained DNN can provide efficient robust beamforming solutions based only on imperfect ob…
As a key technology for future wireless networks, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) can significantly improve the energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE), and the performance is highly dependant on the degree of the available channel state information (CSI). While most existing works on massive MIMO focused on the case where the instantaneous CSI at the transmitter (CSIT) is available, it is usually not an easy task to obtain precise instantaneous CSIT. In this paper, we investigate EE-SE tradeoff in single-cell massive MIMO downlink transmission with statistical CSIT. …
In frequency-division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, 1-bit compressed sensing (CS)-based superimposed channel state information (CSI) feedback has shown many advantages, while still faces many challenges, such as low accuracy of the downlink CSI recovery and large processing delays. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes a deep learning (DL) scheme to improve the 1-bit compressed sensing-based superimposed CSI feedback. On the user side, the downlink CSI is compressed with the 1-bit CS technique, superimposed on the uplink user data sequences (…
Channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter is of importance to the performance of physical layer security based on multi-antenna networks. Specifically, CSI is not only beneficial to improve the capacity of the legitimate channel, but also can be used to degrade the performance of the eavesdropper channel. Thus, the secrecy rate increases accordingly. This letter focuses on the quantitative analysis of the ergodic secrecy sum-rate in terms of feedback amount of the CSI from the legitimate users in multiuser multi-antenna downlink networks. Furthermore, the asymptotic characteristics of…
We consider downlink max-based scheduling in which the base station and each user are equipped with a single antenna. In each time slot, the base station obtains channel gains of all users and selects the user with the largest squared channel gain. Assuming that channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), i.e., squared channel gain, can be inaccurate, we derive lower bounds for probability of outage, which occurs when a required data rate is not satisfied under a delay constraint. The bounds are tight for Rayleigh fading and show how required rate and CSIT error affect outage performa…
In this paper, the feasibility of a new downlink transmission mode in massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems is investigated with two types of users, i.e., the users with only statistical channel state information (CSI) and the users with imperfect instantaneous CSI. The problem of downlink precoding design with mixed utilization of statistical and imperfect instantaneous CSI is addressed. We first theoretically analyze the impact of the mutual interference between the two types of users on their achievable rate. Then, considering the mutual interference suppression, we propose an ext…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems require downlink channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS) to better utilize the available spatial diversity and multiplexing gains. However, in a frequency division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO system, CSI feedback overhead degrades the overall spectral efficiency. Convolutional neural network (CNN)-based CSI feedback compression schemes has received a lot of attention recently due to significant improvements in compression efficiency; however, they still require reliable feedback links to convey the compressed CSI information …

Artificial intelligence (AI) based downlink channel state information (CSI) prediction for frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has attracted growing attention recently. However, existing works focus on the downlink CSI prediction for the users under a given environment and is hard to adapt to users in new environment especially when labeled data is limited. To address this issue, we formulate the downlink channel prediction as a deep transfer learning (DTL) problem, where each learning task aims to predict the downlink CSI from the uplink CS…
We consider a scalable user-centric wireless network with dynamic cluster formation as defined by Björnsson and Sanguinetti. After having shown the importance of dominant channel subspace information for uplink (UL) pilot decontamination and having examined different UL combining schemes in our previous work, here we investigate precoding strategies for the downlink (DL). Distributed scalable DL precoding and power allocation methods are evaluated for different antenna distributions, user densities and UL pilot dimensions. We compare distributed power allocation methods to a scheme based on a …
This paper introduces a new mathematical framework, which is used to derive joint uplink/downlink achievable rate regions for multi-user spatial multiplexing between one base station and multiple terminals. The framework consists of two models: the first one is a simple transmission model for uplink and downlink, which is capable to give a lower bound on the capacity for the case that the transmission is subject to imperfect CSI. A detailed model for concrete channel estimation and feedback schemes provides parameter input to the former model and covers the most important aspects such as pilot…
We investigate the downlink multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) scheduling problem in the presence of imperfect Channel State Information at the transmitter (CSIT) that comprises of coarse and current CSIT as well as finer but delayed CSIT. This scheduling problem is characterized by an intricate `exploitation - exploration tradeoff' between scheduling the users based on current CSIT for immediate gains, and scheduling them to obtain finer albeit delayed CSIT and potentially larger future gains. We solve this scheduling problem by formulating a frame based joint scheduling and feedback approach, where i…
In a frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the acquisition of downlink channel state information (CSI) at base station (BS) is a very challenging task due to the overwhelming overheads required for downlink training and uplink feedback. In this paper, we reveal a deterministic uplink-to-downlink mapping function when the position-to-channel mapping is bijective. Motivated by the universal approximation theorem, we then propose a sparse complex-valued neural network (SCNet) to approximate the uplink-to-downlink mapping function. Different from …
Massive MIMO wireless FDD systems are often confronted by the challenge to efficiently obtain downlink channel state information (CSI). Previous works have demonstrated the potential in CSI encoding and recovery by take advantage of uplink/downlink reciprocity between their CSI magnitudes. However, such a framework separately encodes CSI phase and magnitude. To improve CSI encoding, we propose a learning-based framework based on limited CSI feedback and magnitude-aided information. Moving beyond previous works, our proposed framework with a modified loss function enables end-to-end learning to…
We use stochastic network calculus to investigate the delay performance of a multiuser MISO system with zero-forcing beamforming. First, we consider ideal assumptions with long codewords and perfect CSI at the transmitter, where we observe a strong channel hardening effect that results in very high reliability with respect to the maximum delay of the application. We then study the system under more realistic assumptions with imperfect CSI and finite blocklength channel coding. These effects lead to interference and to transmission errors, and we derive closed-form lower and upper bounds on the…
In this paper, a new optimization framework is presented for the joint design of user selection, power allocation, and precoding in multi-cell multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems when imperfect channel state information at transmitter (CSIT) is available. By representing the joint optimization variables in a higher-dimensional space, the weighted sum-spectral efficiency maximization is formulated as the maximization of the product of Rayleigh quotients. Although this is still a non-convex problem, a computationally efficient algorithm, referred to as generalized power i…
In this paper, a novel framework is proposed to optimize the downlink multi-user communication of a millimeter wave base station, which is assisted by a reconfigurable intelligent reflector (IR). In particular, a channel estimation approach is developed to measure the channel state information (CSI) in real-time. First, for a perfect CSI scenario, the precoding transmission of the BS and the reflection coefficient of the IR are jointly optimized, via an iterative approach, so as to maximize the sum of downlink rates towards multiple users. Next, in the imperfect CSI scenario, a distributional …
In this paper, the design of robust linear precoders for the massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) downlink with imperfect channel state information (CSI) is investigated. The imperfect CSI for each UE obtained at the BS is modeled as statistical CSI under a jointly correlated channel model with both channel mean and channel variance information, which includes the effects of channel estimation error, channel aging and spatial correlation. The design objective is to maximize the expected weighted sum-rate. By combining the minorize-maximize (MM) algorithm with the deterministic equivalent me…

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with frequency division duplex (FDD) mode is a promising approach to increasing system capacity and link robustness for the fifth generation (5G) wireless cellular systems. The premise of these advantages is the accurate downlink channel state information (CSI) fed back from user equipment. However, conventional feedback methods have difficulties in reducing feedback overhead due to significant amount of base station (BS) antennas in massive MIMO systems. Recently, deep learning (DL)-based CSI feedback conquers many difficulties, yet still shows in…
In this letter, we consider linear precoding for downlink massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We propose the novel successively-regularized zero forcing (SRZF) precoding, which exploits successive null spaces of the MIMO channels of the users, along with regularization, to control the inter-user interference (IUI) and to enhance performance and robustness to imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS). We study the IUI characteristics of the proposed SRZF precoding for perfect and imperfect CSI at the BS. Furthermore, via computer simul…
In this paper, we present robust joint non-linear transceiver designs for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink in the presence of imperfections in the channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). The base station (BS) is equipped with multiple transmit antennas, and each user terminal is equipped with one or more receive antennas. The BS employs Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) for inter-user interference pre-cancellation at the transmitter. We consider robust transceiver designs that jointly optimize the transmit THP filters and receive filter for two models of …
Reciprocity-based time-division duplex (TDD) Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems utilize channel estimates obtained in the uplink to perform precoding in the downlink. However, this method has been criticized of breaking down, in the sense that the channel estimates are not good enough to spatially separate multiple user terminals, at low uplink reference signal signal-to-noise ratios, due to insufficient channel estimation quality. Instead, codebook-based downlink precoding has been advocated for as an alternative solution in order to bypass this problem. We analyze this pro…
When base stations (BSs) are deployed with multiple antennas, they need to have downlink (DL) channel state information (CSI) to optimize downlink transmissions by beamforming. The DL CSI is usually measured at mobile stations (MSs) through DL training and fed back to the BS in frequency division duplexing (FDD). The DL training and uplink (UL) feedback might become infeasible due to insufficient coherence time interval when the channel rapidly changes due to high speed of MSs. Without the feedback from MSs, it may be possible for the BS to directly obtain the DL CSI using the inherent relatio…
Channel state information (CSI) acquisition is a significant bottleneck in the design of Massive MIMO wireless systems, due to the length of the training sequences required to distinguish the antennas (in the downlink) and the users (for the uplink where a given spectral resource can be shared by a large number of users). In this article, we focus on the downlink CSI estimation case. Considering the presence of spatial correlation at the base transceiver station (BTS) side, and assuming that the per-user channel statistics are known, we seek to exploit this correlation to minimize the length o…
Wireless network scheduling and control techniques (e.g., opportunistic scheduling) rely heavily on access to Channel State Information (CSI). However, obtaining this information is costly in terms of bandwidth, time, and power, and could result in large overhead. Therefore, a critical question is how to optimally manage network resources in the absence of such information. To that end, we develop a cross-layer solution for downlink cellular systems with imperfect (and possibly no) CSI at the transmitter. We use rateless codes to resolve channel uncertainty. To keep the decoding complexity low…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is promising in providing unprecedentedly high data rate. To achieve its full potential, the transceiver needs complete channel state information (CSI) to perform transmit/receive precoding/combining. This requirement, however, is challenging in the practical systems due to the unavoidable processing and feedback delays, which oftentimes degrades the performance to a great extent, especially in the high mobility scenarios. In this paper, we develop a deep learning based channel prediction framework that proactively predicts the downlink chan…
In this paper, we propose a method for acquiring accurate and timely channel state information (CSI) by leveraging full-duplex transmission. Specifically, we propose a mobile communication system in which base stations continuously transmit a pilot sequence in the uplink frequency band, while terminals use self-interference cancellation capabilities to obtain CSI at any time. Our proposal outperforms its half-duplex counterpart by at least 50% in terms of throughput while ensuring the same (or even lower) outage probability. Remarkably, it also outperforms using full duplex for downlink data t…
We consider a MIMO fading broadcast channel where the fading channel coefficients are constant over time-frequency blocks that span a coherent time $\times$ a coherence bandwidth. In closed-loop systems, channel state information at transmitter (CSIT) is acquired by the downlink training sent by the base station and an explicit feedback from each user terminal. In open-loop systems, CSIT is obtained by exploiting uplink training and channel reciprocity. We use a tight closed-form lower bound on the ergodic achievable rate in the presence of CSIT errors in order to optimize the overall system t…
Non-orthogonal communications are expected to play a key role in future wireless systems. In downlink transmissions, the data symbols are broadcast from a base station to different users, which are superimposed with different power to facilitate high-integrity detection using successive interference cancellation (SIC). However, SIC requires accurate knowledge of both the channel model and channel state information (CSI), which may be difficult to acquire. We propose a deep learningaided SIC detector termed SICNet, which replaces the interference cancellation blocks of SIC by deep neural networ…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems deploying a large number of antennas at the base station considerably increase the spectrum efficiency by serving multiple users simultaneously without causing severe interference. However, the advantage relies on the availability of the downlink channel state information (CSI) of multiple users, which is still a challenge in frequency-division-duplex transmission systems. This paper aims to solve this problem by developing a full transceiver framework that includes downlink channel training (or estimation), CSI feedback, and channel recons…
In this paper, we analyze the ergodic sum-rate of a multi-cell downlink system with base station (BS) cooperation using regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. Our model assumes that the channels between BSs and users have independent spatial correlations and imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is available. Our derivations are based on large dimensional random matrix theory (RMT) under the assumption that the numbers of antennas at the BS and users approach to infinity with some fixed ratios. In particular, a deterministic equivalent expression of the ergodic sum-r…
Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) for multi-user downlink operates by splitting the message for each user equipment (UE) into a private message and a set of common messages, which are simultaneously transmitted by means of superposition coding. The RSMA scheme can enhance throughput and connectivity as compared to conventional multiple access techniques by optimizing the rate-splitting ratios along with the corresponding downlink beamforming vectors. This work examines the impact of erroneous channel state information (CSI) on the performance of RSMA in cell-free multiple-input multiple-ou…
Recently, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has attracted considerable interest as one of the 5G-enabling techniques. However, users with better channel conditions in downlink communications intrinsically benefits from NOMA thanks to successive decoding, judicious designs are required to guarantee user fairness. In this paper, a two-user downlink NOMA system over fading channels is considered. For delay-tolerant transmission, the average sum-rate is maximized subject to both average and peak power constraints as well as a minimum average user rate constraint. The optimal resource allocatio…
We propose an innovative machine learning-based technique to address the problem of channel acquisition at the base station in frequency division duplex systems. In this context, the base station reconstructs the full channel state information in the downlink frequency range based on limited downlink channel state information feedback from the mobile terminal. The channel state information recovery is based on a convolutional neural network which is trained exclusively on collected channel state samples acquired in the uplink frequency domain. No acquisition of training samples in the downlink…
Hybrid beamforming is known to be a cost-effective and wide-spread solution for a system with large-scale antenna arrays. This work studies the optimization of the analog and digital components of the hybrid beamforming solution for remote radio heads (RRHs) in a downlink cloud radio access network (C-RAN) architecture. Digital processing is carried out at a baseband processing unit (BBU) in the "cloud" and the precoded baseband signals are quantized prior to transmission to the RRHs via finite-capacity fronthaul links. In this system, we consider two different channel state information (CSI) …
In this paper, we present the ergodic sum secrecy rate (ESSR) analysis of an underlay spectrum sharing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system. We consider the scenario where the power transmitted by the secondary transmitter (ST) is constrained by the peak tolerable interference at multiple primary receivers (PRs) as well as the maximum transmit power of the ST. The effect of channel estimation error is also taken into account in our analysis. We derive exact and asymptotic closed-form expressions for the ESSR of the downlink NOMA system, and show that the performance can be classified i…
This paper investigates the transmission design in the reconfigurable-intelligent-surface (RIS)-assisted downlink system. The channel state information (CSI) is usually difficult to be estimated at the base station (BS) when the RIS is not equipped with radio frequency chains. In this paper, we propose a downlink transmission framework with unknown CSI via Bayesian optimization. Since the CSI is not available at the BS, we treat the unknown objective function as the black-box function and take the beamformer, the phase shift, and the receiving filter as the input. Then the objective function i…
In this paper, we analyze the achievable downlink spectral efficiency of cell-free massive multiple input multiple output (CF-mMIMO) systems, accounting for the effects of channel aging (caused by user mobility) and pilot contamination. We consider two cases, one where user equipments (UEs) rely on downlink pilots beamformed by the access points (APs) to estimate downlink channel, and another where UEs utilize statistical channel state information (CSI) for data decoding. For comparison, we also consider cellular mMIMO and derive its achievable spectral efficiency with channel aging and pilot …
This paper studies the concept of jointly utilizing the data information(DI)and channel state information (CSI) in order to design symbol-level precoders for a multiple input and single output (MISO) downlink channel. In this direction, the interference among the simultaneous data streams is transformed to useful signal that can improve the signal to interference noise ratio (SINR) of the downlink transmissions. We propose a maximum ratio transmissions (MRT) based algorithm that jointly exploits DI and CSI to gain the benefits from these useful signals. In this context, a novel framework to mi…
Adaptively adjusting system parameters including bandwidth, transmit power and mode to maximize the "Bits per-Joule" energy efficiency (BPJ-EE) in the downlink MIMO systems with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is considered in this paper. By mode we refer to choice of transmission schemes i.e. singular value decomposition (SVD) or block diagonalization (BD), active transmit/receive antenna number and active user number. We derive optimal bandwidth and transmit power for each dedicated mode at first. During the derivation, accurate capacity estimation strategies ar…
Cell-free system where a group of base stations (BSs) cooperatively serves users has received much attention as a promising technology for the future wireless systems. In order to maximize the cooperation gain in the cell-free systems, acquisition of downlink channel state information (CSI) at the BSs is crucial. While this task is relatively easy for the time division duplexing (TDD) systems due to the channel reciprocity, it is not easy for the frequency division duplexing (FDD) systems due to the CSI feedback overhead. This issue is even more pronounced in the cell-free systems since the us…
This paper proposes a roust downlink multiuser MIMO scheme that exploits the channel mean and antenna correlations to alleviate the performance penalty due to the mismatch between the true and estimated CSI.
