The key polynomials, the Demazure atoms, the Schubert polynomials, and even the Schur functions can be defined using divided difference operator. In 2000, Hivert introduced a quasisymmetric analog of the divided difference operator. In particular, replacing it in a natural way in the definition of the Schur functions gives Gessel's fundamental basis. This paper is our attempt to apply the same methods to define the remaining bases and study the results. In particular, we show both the key polynomials and Demazure atoms have natural analogs using Hivert's operator and that the resulting bases occur independently and defined by other means in the work of Assaf and Searles, as the fundemental slide polynomials and the fundamental particle basis respectively. We further explore properties of these two bases, including giving the structure constants for the fundamental particle basis.
Motivated by a question in Schubert calculus, we study the interplay of quasisymmetric polynomials with the divided symmetrization operator, which was introduced by Postnikov in the context of volume polynomials of permutahedra. Divided symmetrization is a linear form which acts on the space of polynomials in $n$ indeterminates of degree $n-1$. We first show that divided symmetrization applied to a quasisymmetric polynomial in $m$ indeterminates can be easily determined. Several examples with a strong combinatorial flavor are given. Then, we prove that the divided symmetrization of any polynom…

We introduce new bases for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions that refine the symmetric powersum basis. These bases are expanded in terms of quasisymmetric monomial functions by using fillings of matrices. We define the analog of these bases in quasisymmetric functions of non-commuting variables. Our new bases have a (shifted) shuffle product and a deconcatenate coproduct. Finally, we describe a change of basis rule from the quasisymmetric powersum basis to the quasisymmetric fundamental basis.
This article serves as an introduction to several recent developments in the study of quasisymmetric functions. The focus of this survey is on connections between quasisymmetric functions and the combinatorial Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions, appearances of quasisymmetric functions within the theory of Macdonald polynomials, and analogues of symmetric functions. Topics include the significance of quasisymmetric functions in representation theory (such as representations of the 0-Hecke algebra), recently discovered bases (including analogues of well-studied symmetric function…
In the 1995 paper entitled "Noncommutative symmetric functions," Gelfand, et. al. defined two noncommutative symmetric function analogues for the power sum basis of the symmetric functions, along with analogues for the elementary and the homogeneous bases. They did not consider the noncommutative symmetric power sum duals in the quasisymmetric functions, which have since been explored only in passing by Derksen and Malvenuto-Reutenauer. These two distinct quasisymmetric power sum bases are the topic of this paper. In contrast to the simplicity of the symmetric power sums, or the other well kno…
Haglund, Luoto, Mason, and van Willigenburg introduced a basis for quasisymmetric functions called the quasisymmetric Schur function basis, generated combinatorially through fillings of composition diagrams in much the same way as Schur functions are generated through reverse column-strict tableaux. We introduce a new basis for quasisymmetric functions called the row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function basis, generated combinatorially through fillings of composition diagrams in much the same way as Schur functions are generated through row-strict tableaux. We describe the relationship between…
We introduce two lifts of the dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions to the polynomial ring. We establish positive formulas for expansions of these dual immaculate slide polynomials into the fundamental slide and quasi-key bases for polynomials. These formulas mirror connections between dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions, fundamental quasisymmetric functions, and Young quasisymmetric Schur functions, extending these connections from the ring of quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. We also consider a reverse variant of the dual immaculate quasisymmetric functions, mirro…
We give a Littlewood-Richardson type rule for expanding the product of a row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function and a symmetric Schur function in terms of row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions. We then discuss a family of polynomials called Demazure atoms. We review the known characterizations of these polynomials and then present two new characterizations. Finally, we consider a family of polynomials called permuted basement nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials which are obtained by permuting the basement of the combinatorial formula of Haglund, Haiman, and Loehr for nonsymmetric Macdonal…
We introduce a new basis for quasisymmetric functions, which arise from a specialization of nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials to standard bases, also known as Demazure atoms. Our new basis is called the basis of quasisymmetric Schur functions, since the basis elements refine Schur functions in a natural way. We derive expansions for quasisymmetric Schur functions in terms of monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions, which give rise to quasisymmetric refinements of Kostka numbers and standard (reverse) tableaux. From here we derive a Pieri rule for quasisymmetric Schur functions that …
For integers m, n $\ge$ 1, we describe a bijection sending dissections of the (mn + 2)-regular polygon into (m + 2)-sided polygons to a new basis of the quotient of the polynomial algebra in mn variables by an ideal generated by some kind of higher quasi-symmetric functions. We show that divisibility of the basis elements corresponds to a new partial order on dissections, which is studied in some detail.
A new Z-basis for the space of quasisymmetric functions (QSym, for short) is presented. It is shown to have nonnegative structure constants, and several interesting properties relative to the space of quasisymmetric functions associated to matroids by the Hopf algebra morphism (F) of Billera, Jia, and Reiner. In particular, for loopless matroids, this basis reflects the grading by matroid rank, as well as by the size of the ground set. It is shown that the morphism F is injective on the set of rank two matroids, and that decomposability of the quasisymmetric function of a rank two matroid mirr…
A new isomorphism invariant of matroids is introduced, in the form of a quasisymmetric function. This invariant (1) defines a Hopf morphism from the Hopf algebra of matroids to the quasisymmetric functions, which is surjective if one uses rational coefficients, (2) is a multivariate generating function for integer weight vectors that give minimum total weight to a unique base of the matroid, (3) is equivalent, via the Hopf antipode, to a generating function for integer weight vectors which keeps track of how many bases minimize the total weight, (4) behaves simply under matroid duality, (5) ha…
We develop the theory of weighted P-partitions, which generalises the theory of P-partitions from labelled posets to weighted labelled posets. We define the related generating functions in the natural way and compute their product, coproduct and other properties. As an application we introduce the basis of combinatorial power sums for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions and the reverse basis, both of which refine the power sum symmetric functions. These bases share many properties with the type 1 and type 2 quasisymmetric power sums introduced by Ballantine, Daugherty, Hicks, Mason an…
A "flip-and-reversal" involution arising in the study of quasisymmetric Schur functions provides a passage between what we term "Young" and "reverse" variants of bases of polynomials or quasisymmetric functions. Building on this perspective, which has found recent application in the study of $q$-analogues of combinatorial Hopf algebras and generalizations of dual immaculate functions, we develop and explore Young analogues of well-known bases for polynomials. We prove several combinatorial formulas for the Young analogue of the key polynomials, show that they form the generating functions for …
We associate a polynomial to any diagram of unit cells in the first quadrant of the plane using Kohnert's algorithm for moving cells down. In this way, for every weak composition one can choose a cell diagram with corresponding row-counts, with each choice giving rise to a combinatorially-defined basis of polynomials. These Kohnert bases provide a simultaneous generalization of Schubert polynomials and Demazure characters for the general linear group. Using the monomial and fundamental slide bases defined earlier by the authors, we show that Kohnert polynomials stabilize to quasisymmetric func…
We introduce two new bases of the ring of polynomials and study their relations to known bases. The first basis is the quasiLascoux basis, which is simultaneously both a $K$-theoretic deformation of the quasikey basis and also a lift of the $K$-analogue of the quasiSchur basis from quasisymmetric polynomials to general polynomials. We give positive expansions of this quasiLascoux basis into the glide and Lascoux atom bases, as well as a positive expansion of the Lascoux basis into the quasiLascoux basis. As a special case, these expansions give the first proof that the $K$-analogues of quasiSc…
We present positivity conjectures for the Schur expansion of Jack symmetric functions in two bases given by binomial coefficients. Partial results suggest that there are rich combinatorics to be found in these bases, including Eulerian numbers, Stirling numbers, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux, and rook boards. These results also lead to further conjectures about the fundamental quasisymmetric expansions of these bases, which we prove for special cases.
We introduce two new bases for polynomials that lift monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. By defining a new condition on pipe dreams, called quasi-Yamanouchi, we give a positive combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials into these new bases that parallels the expansion of Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. As a result, we obtain a refinement of the stable limits of Schubert polynomials to Stanley symmetric functions. We also give combinatorial rules for the positive structure constants of these bases that generalize …
In the prequel to this paper, we showed how results of Mason involving a new combinatorial formula for polynomials that are now known as Demazure atoms (characters of quotients of Demazure modules, called standard bases by Lascoux and Schutzenberger) could be used to define a new basis for the ring of quasisymmetric functions we call Quasisymmetric Schur functions (QS functions for short). In this paper we develop the combinatorics of these polynomials futher, by showing that the product of a Schur function and a Demazure atom has a positive expansion in terms of Demazure atoms. As a by-produc…
Gessel's fundamental and Stembridge's peak functions are the generating functions for (enriched) $P$-partitions on labelled chains. They are also the bases of two significant subalgebras of formal power series, respectively the ring of quasisymmetric functions (QSym) and the algebra of peaks. Hsiao introduced the monomial peak functions, a basis of the algebra of peaks indexed by odd integer compositions whose relation to peak functions mimics the one between the monomial and fundamental bases of QSym. We show that the extension of monomial peaks to any composition is a new basis of QSym and g…
By using some techniques of the divided difference operators, we establish an 4n-point interpolation formula. Certain polynomials, such as Jackson's _8ϕ_7 terminating summation formula, are special cases of this formula. Based on Krattenthaler's identity, we also give Jackson's formula a determinantal interpretation.
