A new family of distributions indexed by the class of matrix variate contoured elliptically distribution is proposed as an extension of some bimatrix variate distributions. The termed \emph{multimatrix variate distributions} open new perspectives for the classical distribution theory, usually based on probabilistic independent models and preferred untested fitting laws. Most of the multimatrix models here derived are invariant under the spherical family, a fact that solves the testing and prior knowledge of the underlying distributions and elucidates the statistical methodology in contrasts with some weakness of current studies as copulas. The paper also includes a number of diverse special cases, properties and generalisations. The new joint distributions allows several unthinkable combinations for copulas, such as scalars, vectors and matrices, all of them adjustable to the required models of the experts. The proposed joint distributions are also easily computable, then several applications are plausible. In particular, an exhaustive example in molecular docking on SARS-CoV-2 presents the results on matrix dependent samples.
Several matrix variate hypergeometric type distributions are derived. The compound distributions of left-spherical matrix variate elliptical distributions and inverted hypergeometric type distributions with matrix arguments are then proposed. The scale mixture of left-spherical matrix variate elliptical distributions and univariate inverted hypergeometric type distributions is also derived as a particular case of the compound distribution approach.
In this paper, we determine the density functions of nonsymmetrised doubly noncentral matrix variate beta type I and II distributions. The nonsymetrised density functions of doubly noncentral and noncentral bimatrix variate generalised beta type I and II distributions are also obtained.
This work sets the matrix variate Birnbaum-Saunders theory in the context of singular distributions and elliptical models. The so termed singular matrix variate generalised Birnbaum-Saunders distribution is obtained with respect the Hausdorff measure. Several basic properties and particular cases of this distribution are also derived.
In this paper, the study of bivariate generalised beta type I and II distributions is extended to the complex matrix variate case, for which the corresponding density functions are found. In addition, for complex bimatrix variate beta type I distributions, several basic properties, including the joint eigenvalue density and the maximum eigenvalue distribution, are studied.
A new family of multivariate distributions, which shall be termed multivector variate distributions, based in the family of the multivariate contoured elliptically distribution is proposed. Several particular cases of multivector variate distributions are obtained and a number of published multivariate distributions in another contexts are found as simple corollaries. An application of interest in finance is full derived and compared with the traditional methods.
This paper derives the elliptical matrix variate version of the well known univariate Birnbaum and Saunders distribution. A generalisation based on a matrix transformation is proposed, instead of the independent element by element representation of the Gaussian univariate version of 1969. New results on Jacobians were needed to derived the matrix variate distribution. A number of special cases are studied and some basic properties are found. Finally, an example based on real data of two populations is provided. The maximum likelihood estimates are found for a number of matrix variate generalis…
In this paper, the densities of the doubly singular beta type I and II distributions are found, and the joint densities of their corresponding nonzero eigenvalues are provided. As a consequence, the density function of a singular inverted matricvariate t distribution is obtained.
We establish an identity for E f (Y) -E f (X), when X and Y both have matrix variateskew-normal distributions and the function f fulfills some weak conditions. Thecharacteristic function of matrix variate skew normal distribution is then derived. Finally,we make use of it to derive some necessary and sucient conditions for the comparisonof matrix variate skew-normal distributions under six di erent orders, such as usualstochastic order, convex order, increasing convex order, upper orthant order, directionally convex order and supermodular order.
This paper deals with the problem of estimating predictive densities of a matrix-variate normal distribution with known covariance matrix. Our main aim is to establish some Bayesian predictive densities related to matricial shrinkage estimators of the normal mean matrix. The Kullback-Leibler loss is used for evaluating decision-theoretical optimality of predictive densities. It is shown that a proper hierarchical prior yields an admissible and minimax predictive density. Also, superharmonicity of prior densities is paid attention to for finding out a minimax predictive density with good numeri…
Matrix variate beta (MVB) distributions are used in different fields of hypothesis testing, multivariate correlation analysis, zero regression, canonical correlation analysis and etc. In this approach a unified methodology is proposed to generate matrix variate distributions by combining the kernel of MVB distributions of different types with an unknown Borel measurable function of trace operator over matrix space, called generator component. The latter component is a principal element of these newly defined generator type matrix variate distributions. The matrix variate Kummer beta distributi…
A new family of matrix variate distributions indexed by elliptical models are proposed in this work. The so called \emph{multimatricvariate distributions} emerge as a generalization of the bimatrix variate distributions based on matrix variate gamma distributions and independence. Some properties and special cases of the multimatricvariate distributions are also derived. Two new interesting Jacobians in the area are also provided. Finally, an application for time dependent data of DNA molecules is studied.
Probability distributions in Stiefel manifold such as the von-Mises Fisher and Bingham distributions find diverse applications in signal processing and other applied sciences. Use of these statistical models in practice is complicated by the difficulties in numerical evaluation of their normalization constants. In this letter, we derive asymptotical approximations to the normalization constants via recent results in random matrix theory. The derived approximations take simple forms and are reasonably accurate in regimes of practical interest. As an application, we show that the proposed analyt…
Three-way data can be conveniently modelled by using matrix variate distributions. Although there has been a lot of work for the matrix variate normal distribution, there is little work in the area of matrix skew distributions. Three matrix variate distributions that incorporate skewness, as well as other flexible properties such as concentration, are discussed. Equivalences to multivariate analogues are presented, and moment generating functions are derived. Maximum likelihood parameter estimation is discussed, and simulated data is used for illustration.
Three types of integral representations for the cumulative distribution functions of convolutions of non-central p-variate gamma distributions are given by integration of elementary complex functions over the p-cube Cp = (-pi,pi]x...x(-pi,pi]. In particular, the joint distribution of the diagonal elements of a generalized quadratic form XAX' with n independent normally distributed column vectors in X is obtained. For a single p-variate gamma distribution function (p-1)-variate integrals over Cp-1 are derived. The integrals are numerically more favourable than integrals obtained from the Fourie…
Although there is ample work in the literature dealing with skewness in the multivariate setting, there is a relative paucity of work in the matrix variate paradigm. Such work is, for example, useful for modelling three-way data. A matrix variate skew-t distribution is derived based on a mean-variance matrix normal mixture. An expectation-conditional maximization algorithm is developed for parameter estimation. Simulated data are used for illustration.
In this paper, we develop local expansions for the ratio of the centered matrix-variate $T$ density to the centered matrix-variate normal density with the same covariances. The approximations are used to derive upper bounds on several probability metrics (such as the total variation and Hellinger distance) between the corresponding induced measures. This work extends some of the results of Shafiei & Saberali (2015) and Ouimet (2022) for the univariate Student distribution to the matrix-variate setting.
A (p-1)-variate integral representation is given for the cumulative distribution function of the general p-variate non-central gamma distribution with a non-centrality matrix of any admissible rank. The real part of products of well known analytical functions is integrated over arguments from (-pi,pi). To facilitate the computation, these formulas are given more detailed for p=2 and p=3. These (p-1)-variate integrals are also derived for the diagonal of a non-central complex Wishart Matrix. Furthermore, some alternative formulas are given for the cases with an associated "one-factorial" (pxp)-…
In this paper, we will discuss the concept of an array variate random variable and introduce a class of skew normal array densities that are obtained through a selection model that uses the array variate normal density as the kernel and the cumulative distribution of the univariate normal distribution as the selection function.
Kronecker product covariance structure provides an efficient way to modeling the inter-correlations of matrix-variate data. In this paper, we propose testing statistics for Kronecker product covariance matrix based on linear spectral statistics of renormalized sample covariance matrices. Central limit theorem is proved for the linear spectral statistics with explicit formulas for mean and covariance functions, which fills the gap in the literature. We then theoretically justify that the proposed testing statistics have well-controlled sizes and strong powers. To facilitate practical usefulness…
Undirected graphs can be used to describe matrix variate distributions. In this paper, we develop new methods for estimating the graphical structures and underlying parameters, namely, the row and column covariance and inverse covariance matrices from the matrix variate data. Under sparsity conditions, we show that one is able to recover the graphs and covariance matrices with a single random matrix from the matrix variate normal distribution. Our method extends, with suitable adaptation, to the general setting where replicates are available. We establish consistency and obtain the rates of co…
The noncentral Wishart distribution has become more mainstream in statistics as the prevalence of applications involving sample covariances with underlying multivariate Gaussian populations as dramatically increased since the advent of computers. Multiple sources in the literature deal with local approximations of the noncentral Wishart distribution with respect to its central counterpart. However, no source has yet developed explicit local approximations for the (central) Wishart distribution in terms of a normal analogue, which is important since Gaussian distributions are at the heart of th…
Statistical analysis of tensor-valued data has largely used the tensor-variate normal (TVN) distribution that may be inadequate when data comes from distributions with heavier or lighter tails. We study a general family of elliptically contoured (EC) tensor-variate distributions and derive its characterizations, moments, marginal and conditional distributions, and the EC Wishart distribution. We describe procedures for maximum likelihood estimation from data that are (1) uncorrelated draws from an EC distribution, (2) from a scale mixture of the TVN distribution, and (3) from an underlying but…
Modern technology often generates data with complex structures in which both response and explanatory variables are matrix-valued. Existing methods in the literature are able to tackle matrix-valued predictors but are rather limited for matrix-valued responses. In this article, we study matrix-variate regressions for such data, where the response Y on each experimental unit is a random matrix and the predictor X can be either a scalar, a vector, or a matrix, treated as non-stochastic in terms of the conditional distribution Y|X. We propose models for matrix-variate regressions and then develop…
We consider a system of dependent Poisson variables, where each variable is the sum of an independent variate and a common variate. It is the common variate that creates the dependence. Within this system, a test of independence may be constructed where the null hypothesis is that the common variate is identically zero. In the present paper, we consider the maximum log likelihood ratio test. For this test, it is well-known that the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is an equal mixture of zero and a chi square distribution with one degree of freedom. We examine a Bartlett correction…
Some classical uncertainty quantification problems require the estimation of multiple expectations. Estimating all of them accurately is crucial and can have a major impact on the analysis to perform, and standard existing Monte Carlo methods can be costly to do so. We propose here a new procedure based on importance sampling and control variates for estimating more efficiently multiple expectations with the same sample. We first show that there exists a family of optimal estimators combining both importance sampling and control variates, which however cannot be used in practice because they r…
This paper considers the estimation and inference of the low-rank components in high-dimensional matrix-variate factor models, where each dimension of the matrix-variates ($p \times q$) is comparable to or greater than the number of observations ($T$). We propose an estimation method called $α$-PCA that preserves the matrix structure and aggregates mean and contemporary covariance through a hyper-parameter $α$. We develop an inferential theory, establishing consistency, the rate of convergence, and the limiting distributions, under general conditions that allow for correlations across time, ro…
In this study, we derive the exact distributions of eigenvalues of a singular Wishart matrix under an elliptical model. We define generalized heterogeneous hypergeometric functions with two matrix arguments and provide convergence conditions for these functions. The joint density of eigenvalues and the distribution function of the largest eigenvalue for a singular elliptical Wishart matrix are represented by these functions. Numerical computations for the distribution of the largest eigenvalue were conducted under the matrix-variate $t$ and Kotz-type models.
This paper studies the Gaussian approximation of high-dimensional and non-degenerate U-statistics of order two under the supremum norm. We propose a two-step Gaussian approximation procedure that does not impose structural assumptions on the data distribution. Specifically, subject to mild moment conditions on the kernel, we establish the explicit rate of convergence that decays polynomially in sample size for a high-dimensional scaling limit, where the dimension can be much larger than the sample size. We also supplement a practical Gaussian wild bootstrap method to approximate the quantiles …
The multilinear normal distribution is a widely used tool in tensor analysis of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Diffusion tensor MRI provides a statistical estimate of a symmetric 2nd-order diffusion tensor, for each voxel within an imaging volume. In this article, tensor elliptical (TE) distribution is introduced as an extension to the multilinear normal (MLN) distribution. Some properties including the characteristic function and distribution of affine transformations are given. An integral representation connecting densities of TE and MLN distributions is exhibited that is used in derivin…
This paper considers the problem of matrix-variate logistic regression. It derives the fundamental error threshold on estimating low-rank coefficient matrices in the logistic regression problem by obtaining a lower bound on the minimax risk. The bound depends explicitly on the dimension and distribution of the covariates, the rank and energy of the coefficient matrix, and the number of samples. The resulting bound is proportional to the intrinsic degrees of freedom in the problem, which suggests the sample complexity of the low-rank matrix logistic regression problem can be lower than that for…

We provide an efficient algorithm for the classical problem, going back to Galton, Pearson, and Fisher, of estimating, with arbitrary accuracy the parameters of a multivariate normal distribution from truncated samples. Truncated samples from a $d$-variate normal ${\cal N}(\mathbfμ,\mathbfΣ)$ means a samples is only revealed if it falls in some subset $S \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$; otherwise the samples are hidden and their count in proportion to the revealed samples is also hidden. We show that the mean $\mathbfμ$ and covariance matrix $\mathbfΣ$ can be estimated with arbitrary accuracy in polyn…
