The noncentral Wishart distribution has become more mainstream in statistics as the prevalence of applications involving sample covariances with underlying multivariate Gaussian populations as dramatically increased since the advent of computers. Multiple sources in the literature deal with local approximations of the noncentral Wishart distribution with respect to its central counterpart. However, no source has yet developed explicit local approximations for the (central) Wishart distribution in terms of a normal analogue, which is important since Gaussian distributions are at the heart of the asymptotic theory for many statistical methods. In this paper, we prove a precise asymptotic expansion for the ratio of the Wishart density to the symmetric matrix-variate normal density with the same mean and covariances. The result is then used to derive an upper bound on the total variation between the corresponding probability measures and to find the pointwise variance of a new density estimator on the space of positive definite matrices with a Wishart asymmetric kernel. For the sake of completeness, we also find expressions for the pointwise bias of our new estimator, the pointwise variance as we move towards the boundary of its support, the mean squared error, the mean integrated squared error away from the boundary, and we prove its asymptotic normality.
In this paper we consider the product of a singular Wishart random matrix and a singular normal random vector. A very useful stochastic representation is derived for this product, using which the characteristic function of the product and its asymptotic distribution under the double asymptotic regime are established. The application of obtained stochastic representation speeds up the simulation studies where the product of a singular Wishart random matrix and a singular normal random vector is present. We further document a good performance of the derived asymptotic distribution within a numer…
Geostatistical modeling for continuous point-referenced data has been extensively applied to neuroimaging because it produces efficient and valid statistical inference. However, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), a neuroimaging characterizing the brain structure produces a positive definite (p.d.) matrix for each voxel. Current geostatistical modeling has not been extended to p.d. matrices because introducing spatial dependence among positive definite matrices properly is challenging. In this paper, we use the spatial Wishart process, a spatial stochastic process (random field) where each p.d. ma…
This study derives a new property of the Wishart distribution when the degree-of-freedom and the size of the matrix parameter of the distribution grow simultaneoulsy. Particularly, the asymptotic normality of the product of four independent Wishart matrices is shown under a high dimensional asymptotic regime. As an application of the result, a statistical test procedure for the common principal components hypothesis is proposed. For this problem, the proposed test statistic is asymptotically normal under the null hypothesis. In addition, the proposed test statistic diverges to positive infinit…
A framework for assessing the matrix variate normality of three-way data is developed. The framework comprises a visual method and a goodness of fit test based on the Mahalanobis squared distance (MSD). The MSD of multivariate and matrix variate normal estimators, respectively, are used as an assessment tool for matrix variate normality. Specifically, these are used in the form of a distance-distance (DD) plot as a graphical method for visualizing matrix variate normality. In addition, we employ the popular Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness of fit test in the context of assessing matrix variate norm…
Statistical analysis of tensor-valued data has largely used the tensor-variate normal (TVN) distribution that may be inadequate when data comes from distributions with heavier or lighter tails. We study a general family of elliptically contoured (EC) tensor-variate distributions and derive its characterizations, moments, marginal and conditional distributions, and the EC Wishart distribution. We describe procedures for maximum likelihood estimation from data that are (1) uncorrelated draws from an EC distribution, (2) from a scale mixture of the TVN distribution, and (3) from an underlying but…
We study the central limit theorem for sums of independent tensor powers, $\frac{1}{\sqrt{d}}\sum\limits_{i=1}^d X_i^{\otimes p}$. We focus on the high-dimensional regime where $X_i \in \mathbb{R}^n$ and $n$ may scale with $d$. Our main result is a proposed threshold for convergence. Specifically, we show that, under some regularity assumption, if $n^{2p-1}\gg d$, then the normalized sum converges to a Gaussian. The results apply, among others, to symmetric uniform log-concave measures and to product measures. This generalizes several results found in the literature. Our main technique is a no…
In this study, we derive the exact distributions of eigenvalues of a singular Wishart matrix under an elliptical model. We define generalized heterogeneous hypergeometric functions with two matrix arguments and provide convergence conditions for these functions. The joint density of eigenvalues and the distribution function of the largest eigenvalue for a singular elliptical Wishart matrix are represented by these functions. Numerical computations for the distribution of the largest eigenvalue were conducted under the matrix-variate $t$ and Kotz-type models.
Matrix-variate Gaussian graphical models (GGM) have been widely used for modeling matrix-variate data. Since the support of sparse precision matrix represents the conditional independence graph among matrix entries, conducting support recovery yields valuable information. A commonly used approach is the penalized log-likelihood method. However, due to the complicated structure of precision matrices in the form of Kronecker product, the log-likelihood is non-convex, which presents challenges for both computation and theoretical analysis. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach by form…
Extreme Eigenvalue Distributions of Some Complex Correlated Non-Central Wishart and Gamma-Wishart Random Matrices
We derive the probability that all eigenvalues of a random matrix $\bf M$ lie within an arbitrary interval $[a,b]$, $ψ(a,b)\triangleq\Pr\{a\leqλ_{\min}({\bf M}), λ_{\max}({\bf M})\leq b\}$, when $\bf M$ is a real or complex finite dimensional Wishart, double Wishart, or Gaussian symmetric/Hermitian matrix. We give efficient recursive formulas allowing the exact evaluation of $ψ(a,b)$ for Wishart matrices, even with large number of variates and degrees of freedom. We also prove that the probability that all eigenvalues are within the limiting spectral support (given by the Mar{č}enko-Pastur or …
The present manuscript studies signal detection by likelihood ratio tests in a number of spiked random matrix models, including but not limited to Gaussian mixtures and spiked Wishart covariance matrices. We work directly with multi-spiked cases in these models and with flexible priors on the signal component that allow dependence across spikes. We derive asymptotic normality for the log-likelihood ratios when the signal-to- noise ratios are below certain thresholds. In addition, we show that the variances of the log-likelihood ratios can be asymptotically decomposed as the sums of those of a …
Fitting regression models with many multivariate responses and covariates can be challenging, but such responses and covariates sometimes have tensor-variate structure. We extend the classical multivariate regression model to exploit such structure in two ways: first, we impose four types of low-rank tensor formats on the regression coefficients. Second, we model the errors using the tensor-variate normal distribution that imposes a Kronecker separable format on the covariance matrix. We obtain maximum likelihood estimators via block-relaxation algorithms and derive their computational complex…
In this paper, we develop local expansions for the ratio of the centered matrix-variate $T$ density to the centered matrix-variate normal density with the same covariances. The approximations are used to derive upper bounds on several probability metrics (such as the total variation and Hellinger distance) between the corresponding induced measures. This work extends some of the results of Shafiei & Saberali (2015) and Ouimet (2022) for the univariate Student distribution to the matrix-variate setting.
Gaussian graphical models have received considerable attention during the past four decades from the statistical and machine learning communities. In Bayesian treatments of this model, the G-Wishart distribution serves as the conjugate prior for inverse covariance matrices satisfying graphical constraints. While it is straightforward to posit the unnormalized densities, the normalizing constants of these distributions have been known only for graphs that are chordal, or decomposable. Up until now, it was unknown whether the normalizing constant for a general graph could be represented explicit…
A (p-1)-variate integral representation is given for the cumulative distribution function of the general p-variate non-central gamma distribution with a non-centrality matrix of any admissible rank. The real part of products of well known analytical functions is integrated over arguments from (-pi,pi). To facilitate the computation, these formulas are given more detailed for p=2 and p=3. These (p-1)-variate integrals are also derived for the diagonal of a non-central complex Wishart Matrix. Furthermore, some alternative formulas are given for the cases with an associated "one-factorial" (pxp)-…
We study a novel class of affine invariant and consistent tests for normality in any dimension. The tests are based on a characterization of the standard $d$-variate normal distribution as the unique solution of an initial value problem of a partial differential equation motivated by the harmonic oscillator, which is a special case of a Schrödinger operator. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the test statistics under the hypothesis of normality as well as under fixed and contiguous alternatives. The tests are consistent against general alternatives, exhibit strong power performance for …
We establish an identity for E f (Y) -E f (X), when X and Y both have matrix variateskew-normal distributions and the function f fulfills some weak conditions. Thecharacteristic function of matrix variate skew normal distribution is then derived. Finally,we make use of it to derive some necessary and sucient conditions for the comparisonof matrix variate skew-normal distributions under six di erent orders, such as usualstochastic order, convex order, increasing convex order, upper orthant order, directionally convex order and supermodular order.
We consider estimation of a functional of the data distribution based on i.i.d. observations. We assume the target function can be defined as the minimizer of the expectation of a loss function over a class of $d$-variate real valued cadlag functions that have finite sectional variation norm. For all $k=0,1,\ldots$, we define a $k$-th order smoothness class of functions as $d$-variate functions on the unit cube for which each of a sequentially defined $k$-th order Radon-Nikodym derivative w.r.t. Lebesgue measure is cadlag and of bounded variation. For a target function in this $k$-th order smo…

We study a novel class of affine invariant and consistent tests for multivariate normality. The tests are based on a characterization of the standard $d$-variate normal distribution by means of the unique solution of an initial value problem connected to a partial differential equation, which is motivated by a multivariate Stein equation. The test criterion is a suitably weighted $L^2$-statistic. We derive the limit distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis as well as under contiguous and fixed alternatives to normality. A consistent estimator of the limiting variance under …

This paper deals with the problem of estimating predictive densities of a matrix-variate normal distribution with known covariance matrix. Our main aim is to establish some Bayesian predictive densities related to matricial shrinkage estimators of the normal mean matrix. The Kullback-Leibler loss is used for evaluating decision-theoretical optimality of predictive densities. It is shown that a proper hierarchical prior yields an admissible and minimax predictive density. Also, superharmonicity of prior densities is paid attention to for finding out a minimax predictive density with good numeri…
The sum of Log-normal variates is encountered in many challenging applications such as in performance analysis of wireless communication systems and in financial engineering. Several approximation methods have been developed in the literature, the accuracy of which is not ensured in the tail regions. These regions are of primordial interest wherein small probability values have to be evaluated with high precision. Variance reduction techniques are known to yield accurate, yet efficient, estimates of small probability values. Most of the existing approaches, however, have considered the problem…
The joint distribution of two off-diagonal Wishart matrix elements was useful in recent work on geometric probability [Finch 2010]. Not finding such formulas in the literature, we report these here.
The prediction of the variance-covariance matrix of the multivariate normal distribution is important in the multivariate analysis. We investigated Bayesian predictive distributions for Wishart distributions under the Kullback-Leibler divergence. The conditional reducibility of the family of Wishart distributions enables us to decompose the risk of a Bayesian predictive distribution. We considered a recently introduced class of prior distributions, which is called the family of enriched standard conjugate prior distributions, and compared the Bayesian predictive distributions based on these pr…
The upsilon distribution, the sum of independent chi random variates and a normal, is introduced. As a special case, the upsilon distribution includes Lecoutre's lambda-prime distribution. The upsilon distribution finds application in Frequentist inference on the Sharpe ratio, including hypothesis tests on independent samples, confidence intervals, and prediction intervals, as well as their Bayesian counterparts. These tests are extended to the case of factor models of returns.
Three-way data can be conveniently modelled by using matrix variate distributions. Although there has been a lot of work for the matrix variate normal distribution, there is little work in the area of matrix skew distributions. Three matrix variate distributions that incorporate skewness, as well as other flexible properties such as concentration, are discussed. Equivalences to multivariate analogues are presented, and moment generating functions are derived. Maximum likelihood parameter estimation is discussed, and simulated data is used for illustration.
Although there is ample work in the literature dealing with skewness in the multivariate setting, there is a relative paucity of work in the matrix variate paradigm. Such work is, for example, useful for modelling three-way data. A matrix variate skew-t distribution is derived based on a mean-variance matrix normal mixture. An expectation-conditional maximization algorithm is developed for parameter estimation. Simulated data are used for illustration.
Probability distributions in Stiefel manifold such as the von-Mises Fisher and Bingham distributions find diverse applications in signal processing and other applied sciences. Use of these statistical models in practice is complicated by the difficulties in numerical evaluation of their normalization constants. In this letter, we derive asymptotical approximations to the normalization constants via recent results in random matrix theory. The derived approximations take simple forms and are reasonably accurate in regimes of practical interest. As an application, we show that the proposed analyt…
