The inclusion of spatial smoothing in finite-dimensional particle-based Hamiltonian reductions of the Vlasov equation are considered. In the context of the Vlasov-Poisson equation (and other mean-field Lie-Poisson systems), smoothing amounts to a convolutive regularization of the Hamiltonian. This regularization may be interpreted as a change of the inner product structure used to identify the dual space in the Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian formulation. In particular, the shape function used for spatial smoothing may be identified as the kernel function of a reproducing kernel Hilbert space whose inner product is used to define the Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian structure. It is likewise possible to introduce smoothing in the Vlasov-Maxwell system, but in this case the Poisson bracket must be modified rather than the Hamiltonian. The smoothing applied to the Vlasov-Maxwell system is incorporated by inserting smoothing in the map from canonical to kinematic coordinates. In the filtered system, the Lorentz force law and the current, the two terms coupling the Vlasov equation with Maxwell's equations, are spatially smoothed.
The Hamiltonian structure of the gauge-free gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell equations is presented in terms of a Hamiltonian functional and a gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell bracket. The bracket is used to show that the gyrokinetic angular-momentum conservation law can also be expressed in Hamiltonian form. The Jacobi property of the gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell bracket is also demonstrated explicitly.
The Vlasov-Maxwell equations possess a Hamiltonian structure expressed in terms of a Hamiltonian functional and a functional bracket. In the present paper, the transformation ("lift") of the Vlasov-Maxwell bracket induced by the dynamical reduction of single-particle dynamics is investigated when the reduction is carried out by Lie-transform perturbation methods. The ultimate goal of this work is to derive explicit Hamiltonian formulations for the guiding-center and gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell equations that have important applications in our understanding of turbulent magnetized plasmas. Here,…
The nonlinear Vlasov equation contains the full nonlinear dynamics and collective effects of a given Hamiltonian system. The linearized approximation is not valid for a variety of interesting systems, nor is it simple to extend to higher order. It is also well-known that the linearized approximation to the Vlasov equation is invalid for long times, due to its inability to correctly capture fine phase space structures. We derive a perturbation theory for the Vlasov equation based on the underlying Hamiltonian structure of the phase space evolution. We obtain an explicit perturbation series for …
We show that nonrelativsitic scaling of the collisionless Vlasov-Maxwell system implies the existence of a formal invariant slow manifold in the infinite-dimensional Vlasov-Maxwell phase space. Vlasov-Maxwell dynamics restricted to the slow manifold recovers the Vlasov-Poisson and Vlasov-Darwin models as low-order approximations, and provides higher-order corrections to the Vlasov-Darwin model more generally. The slow manifold may be interpreted to all orders in perturbation theory as a collection of formal Vlasov-Maxwell solutions that do not excite light waves, and are therefore "dark". We p…
We present a new variational principle for the gyrokinetic system, similar to the Maxwell-Vlasov action presented in Ref. 1. The variational principle is in the Eulerian frame and based on constrained variations of the phase space fluid velocity and particle distribution function. Using a Legendre transform, we explicitly derive the field theoretic Hamiltonian structure of the system. This is carried out with a modified Dirac theory of constraints, which is used to construct meaningful brackets from those obtained directly from Euler-Poincaré theory. Possible applications of these formulations…
The proof of the Jacobi property of the guiding-center Vlasov-Maxwell bracket underlying the Hamiltonian structure of the guiding-center Vlasov-Maxwell equations is presented.
Nonlinear Hamiltonian systems describing the abstract Vlasov and Hartree equations are considered in the framework of algebraic Poissonian theory. The concept of uniformization is introduced; it generalizes the method of second quantization of classical systems to arbitrary Hamiltonian (Lie-Jordan, or Poissonian) algebras, in particular to the algebras of operators in indefinite spaces. A functional calculus is developed for the uniformized observables, which unifies the calculi of generating functionals for classical, Bosonian and Fermionian multiparticle variables. The nonlinear kinetic equa…
We consider Hamiltonian closures of the Vlasov equation using the phase-space moments of the distribution function. We provide some conditions on the closures imposed by the Jacobi identity. We completely solve some families of examples. As a result, we show that imposing that the resulting reduced system preserves the Hamiltonian character of the parent model shapes its phase space by creating a set of Casimir invariants as a direct consequence of the Jacobi identity.
We consider the Vlasov equation in any spatial dimension, which has long been known to be an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system whose bracket structure is of Lie-Poisson type. In parallel, it is classical that the Vlasov equation is a mean-field limit for a pairwise interacting Newtonian system. Motivated by this knowledge, we provide a rigorous derivation of the Hamiltonian structure of the Vlasov equation, both the Hamiltonian functional and Poisson bracket, directly from the many-body problem. One may view this work as a classical counterpart to arXiv:1908.03847, which provided a rigor…
We consider the one-dimensional Vlasov equation with an attractive cosine potential, and its non homogeneous stationary states that are decreasing functions of the energy. We show that in the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}$ ($p>2$) neighborhood of such a state, all stationary states that are decreasing functions of the energy are stable. This is in sharp contrast with the situation for homogeneous stationary states of a Vlasov equation, where a control over strictly more than one derivative is needed to ensure the absence of unstable stationary states in a neighborhood of a reference stationary state …
Techniques for coordinate changes that depend on both dependent and independent variables are developed and applied to the Maxwell-Vlasov Hamiltonian theory. Particle coordinate changes with a new velocity variable dependent on the magnetic field, with spatial coordinates unchanged, are lifted to transform the noncanonical Poisson bracket and, thus, the field Hamiltonian structure of the Vlasov-Maxwell equation. Several examples are given including magnetic coordinates, where the velocity is decomposed into components parallel and perpendicular to the local magnetic field, and the case of sphe…
Dynamics of collisionless plasma described by the Poisson-Vlasov equations is connected with the Hamiltonian motions of particles and their symmetries. The Poisson equation is obtained as a constraint arising from the gauge symmetries of particle dynamics. Variational derivative constrained by the Poisson equation is used to obtain reduced dynamical equations. Lie-Poisson reduction for the group of canonical diffeomorphisms gives the momentum-Vlasov equations. Plasma density is defined as the divergence of symplectic dual of momentum variables. This definition is also given a momentum map desc…
The notions of spectral stability and the spectrum for the Vlasov-Poisson system linearized about homogeneous equilibria, f_0(v), are reviewed. Structural stability is reviewed and applied to perturbations of the linearized Vlasov operator through perturbations of f_0. We prove that for each f_0 there is an arbitrarily small delta f_0' in W^{1,1}(R) such that f_0+delta f_0$ is unstable. When $f_0$ is perturbed by an area preserving rearrangement, f_0 will always be stable if the continuous spectrum is only of positive signature, where the signature of the continuous spectrum is defined as in p…
We introduce natural differential geometric structures underlying the Poisson-Vlasov equations in momentum variables. We decompose the space of all vector fields over particle phase space into a semi-direct product algebra of Hamiltonian vector fields and its complement. The latter is related to dual space of Lie algebra. Lie algebra of Hamiltonian vector fields is isomorphic to the space of all Lagrangian submanifolds with respect to Tulczyjew symplectic structure. This is obtained as tangent space at the identity of the group of canonical diffeomorphisms represented as space of sections of a…
We introduce a new matter action principle, with a wide range of applicability, for the Vlasov equation in terms of a conjugate pair of functions. Here we apply this action principle to the study of matter in Bianchi cosmological models in general relativity. The Bianchi models are spatially-homogeneous solutions to the Einstein field equations, classified by the three-dimensional Lie algebra that describes the symmetry group of the model. The Einstein equations for these models reduce to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations. The class A Bianchi models admit a Hamiltonian formulati…
The derivation of effective equations for interacting many body systems has seen a lot of progress in the recent years. While dealing with classical systems, singular potentials are quite challenging, comparably strong results are known to hold for quantum systems. In this paper, we wish to show how techniques developed for the derivation of effective descriptions of quantum systems can be used for classical ones. While our future goal is to use these ideas to treat singularities in the interaction, the focus here is to present how quantum mechanical techniques can be used for a classical syst…
Smoothed Wigner transforms have been used in signal processing, as a regularized version of the Wigner transform, and have been proposed as an alternative to it in the homogenization and / or semiclassical limits of wave equations. We derive explicit, closed formulations for the coarse-scale representation of the action of pseudodifferential operators. The resulting ``smoothed operators'' are in general of infinite order. The formulation of an appropriate framework, resembling the Gelfand-Shilov spaces, is necessary. Similarly we treat the ``smoothed Wigner calculus''. In particular this allow…
The Vlasov equation for the collisionless evolution of the single-particle probability distribution function (PDF) is a well-known Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian system. Remarkably, the operation of taking the moments of the Vlasov PDF preserves the Lie-Poisson structure. The individual particle motions correspond to singular solutions of the Vlasov equation. The paper focuses on singular solutions of the problem of geodesic motion of the Vlasov moments. These singular solutions recover geodesic motion of the individual particles.
We consider constrained Hamiltonian systems in the framework of Dirac's theory. We show that the Jacobi identity results from imposing that the constraints are Casimir invariants, regardless of the fact that the matrix of Poisson brackets between constraints is invertible or not. We point out that the proof we provide ensures the validity of the Jacobi identity everywhere in phase space, and not just on the surface defined by the constraints. Two examples are considered: A finite dimensional system with an odd number of constraints, and the Vlasov-Poisson reduction from Vlasov-Maxwell equation…
The Caldeira-Leggett Hamiltonian (Eq. (1) below) describes the interaction of a discrete harmonic oscillator with a continuous bath of harmonic oscillators. This system is a standard model of dissipation in macroscopic low temperature physics, and has applications to superconductors, quantum computing, and macroscopic quantum tunneling. The similarities between the Caldeira-Leggett model and the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation are analyzed, and it is shown that the damping in the Caldeira-Leggett model is analogous to that of Landau damping in plasmas [1]. An invertible linear transformatio…
Helicity, a topological degree that measures the winding and linking of vortex lines, is preserved by ideal (barotropic) fluid dynamics. In the context of the Hamiltonian description, the helicity is a Casimir invariant characterizing a foliation of the associated Poisson manifold. Casimir invariants are special invariants that depend on the Poisson bracket, not on the particular choice of the Hamiltonian. The total mass (or particle number) is another Casimir invariant, whose invariance guarantees the mass (particle) conservation (independent of any specific choice of the Hamiltonian). In a k…
The role of projectors associated with Poisson brackets of constrained Hamiltonian systems is analyzed. Projectors act in two instances in a bracket: in the explicit dependence on the variables and in the computation of the functional derivatives. The role of these projectors is investigated by using Dirac's theory of constrained Hamiltonian systems. Results are illustrated by three examples taken from plasma physics: magnetohydrodynamics, the Vlasov-Maxwell system, and the linear two-species Vlasov system with quasineutrality.
Hamiltonian models for the first three moments of the drift-kinetic distribution function, namely the density, the fluid velocity and the parallel pressure, are derived from the Hamiltonian structure of the drift-kinetic equations. The link with the water-bag closure is established, showing that, unlike the one-dimensional Vlasov equations, these solutions are the only Hamiltonian fluid reductions for the drift-kinetic equation. These models are discussed through their equations of motion and their Casimir invariants.
Motivated by recent discussions on the possible role of quantum computation in plasma simulations, here we present different approaches to Koopman's Hilbert-space formulation of classical mechanics in the context of Vlasov-Maxwell kinetic theory. The celebrated Koopman-von Neumann construction is provided with two different Hamiltonian structures: one is canonical and recovers the usual Clebsch representation of the Vlasov density, the other is noncanonical and appears to overcome certain issues emerging in the canonical formalism. Furthermore, the canonical structure is restored for a variant…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of a perturbation around a spatially non homogeneous stable stationary state of a one-dimensional Vlasov equation. Under general hypotheses, after transient exponential Landau damping, a perturbation evolving according to the linearized Vlasov equation decays algebraically with the exponent -2 and a well defined frequency. The theoretical results are successfully tested against numerical $N$-body simulations, corresponding to the full Vlasov dynamics in the large $N$ limit, in the case of the Hamiltonian mean-field model. For this purpose, we use a weight…
We use a Hamiltonian interacting particle system to derive a stochastic mean field system whose McKean-Vlasov equation yields the incompressible Navier Stokes equation. Since the system is Hamiltonian, the particle relabeling symmetry implies a Kelvin Circulation Theorem along stochastic Lagrangian paths. Moreover, issues of energy dissipation are discussed and the model is connected to other approaches in the literature.
We present the Hamiltonian (Lie-Poisson) analysis of the Vlasov plasma, and the dynamics of its kinetic moments, from the matched pair decomposition point of view. We express these (Lie-Poisson) systems as couplings of \textit{mutually interacting} (Lie-Poisson) subdynamics. The mutual interaction is beyond the well-known semi-direct product theory. Accordingly, as the geometric framework of the present discussion, we address the \textit{matched pair Lie-Poisson} formulation allowing mutual interactions. Moreover, both for the kinetic moments and the Vlasov plasma cases, we observe that one of…
We consider non-stationary dynamical systems with one-and-a-half degrees of freedom. We are interested in algorithmic construction of rich classes of Hamilton's equations with the Hamiltonian H=p^2/2+V(x,t) which are Liouville integrable. For this purpose we use the method of hydrodynamic reductions of the corresponding one-dimensional Vlasov kinetic equation. Also we present several examples of such systems with first integrals with non-polynomial dependencies w.r.t. to momentum. The constructed in this paper classes of potential functions {$V(x,t)$} which give integrable systems with one-and…
For classical Hamiltonian N-body systems with mildly regular pair interaction potential it is shown that when N tends to infinity in a fixed bounded domain, with energy E scaling quadratically in N proportional to e, then Boltzmann's ergodic ensemble entropy S(N,E) has the asymptotic expansion S(N,E) = - N log N + s(e) N + o(N); here, the N log N term is combinatorial in origin and independent of the rescaled Hamiltonian while s(e) is the system-specific Boltzmann entropy per particle, i.e. -s(e) is the minimum of Boltzmann's H-function for a perfect gas of "energy" e subjected to a combinatio…
In this paper we study the Hamiltonian dynamics of charged particles subject to a non-self-consistent stochastic electric field, when the plasma is in the so-called weak turbulent regime. We show that the asymptotic limit of the Vlasov equation is a diffusion equation in the velocity space, but homogeneous in the physical space. We obtain a diffusion matrix, quadratic with respect to the electric field, which can be related to the diffusion matrix of the resonance broadening theory and of the quasilinear theory, depending on whether the typical autocorrelation time of particles is finite or no…
The decomposition of the energy of a compressible fluid parcel into slow (deterministic) and fast (stochastic) components is interpreted as a stochastic Hamiltonian interacting particle system (HIPS). It is shown that the McKean-Vlasov equation associated to the mean field limit yields the barotropic Navier-Stokes equation with density dependent viscosity. Capillary forces can also be treated by this approach. Due to the Hamiltonian structure the mean field system satisfies a Kelvin circulation theorem along stochastic Lagrangian paths.
The Vlasov equation of kinetic theory is introduced and the Hamiltonian structure of its moments is presented. Then we focus on the geodesic evolution of the Vlasov moments. As a first step, these moment equations generalize the Camassa-Holm equation to its multi-component version. Subsequently, adding electrostatic forces to the geodesic moment equations relates them to the Benney equations and to the equations for beam dynamics in particle accelerators. Next, we develop a kinetic theory for self assembly in nano-particles. Darcy's law is introduced as a general principle for aggregation dyna…
A perturbative method called beatification is presented for a class of two-dimensional fluid and plasma theories. The Hamiltonian systems considered, namely the Euler, Vlasov-Poisson, Hasegawa-Mima, and modified Hasegawa-Mima equations, are naturally described in terms of noncanonical variables. The beatification procedure amounts to finding the correct transformation that removes the explicit variable dependence from a noncanonical Poisson bracket and replaces it with a fixed dependence on a chosen state in phase space. As such, beatification is a major step toward casting the Hamiltonian sys…
