Vortices are studied in various scientific disciplines, offering insights into fluid flow behavior. Visualizing the boundary of vortices is crucial for understanding flow phenomena and detecting flow irregularities. This paper addresses the challenge of accurately extracting vortex boundaries using deep learning techniques. While existing methods primarily train on velocity components, we propose a novel approach incorporating particle trajectories (streamlines or pathlines) into the learning process. By leveraging the regional/local characteristics of the flow field captured by streamlines or pathlines, our methodology aims to enhance the accuracy of vortex boundary extraction.
We put forward the idea of defining vortex boundaries in planar flows as closed material barriers to the diffusive transport of vorticity. Such diffusive vortex boundaries minimize the leakage of vorticity from the fluid mass they enclose when compared to other nearby material curves. Building on recent results on passive diffusion barriers, we develop an algorithm for the automated identification of such structures from general, two-dimensional unsteady flow data. As examples, we identify vortex boundaries as vorticity diffusion barriers in two flows: an explicitly known laminar flow and a nu…
We study numerically the formation of a vortex lattice inside a rotating bucket containing superfluid helium, paying attention to an important feature which is practically unavoidable in all experiments: the microscopic roughness of the bucket's surface. We model this using the Gross-Pitaevskii for a weakly-interacting Bose gas, a model which is idealised when applied to superfluid helium but captures the key physics of the vortex dynamics which we are interested in. We find that the vortex lattice arises from the interaction and reconnections of nucleated U-shaped vortex lines, which merge an…
Circular flush Jets In Cross-Flow were experimentally studied in a water tunnel using Volumetric Particle Tracking Velocimetry, for a range of jet to cross-flow velocity ratios, r, from 0.5 to 3, jet exit diameters $d$ from 0.8 cm to 1 cm and cross-flow boundary layer thickness delta from 1 to 2.5 cm. The analysis of the 3D mean velocity fields allows for the definition, computation and study of Counter-rotating Vortex Pair trajectories. The influences of r, d and delta were investigated. A new scaling based on momentum ratio r_m taking into account jet and cross-flow momentum distributions is…
We use holography to investigate the dynamics of a vortex-anti-vortex dipole in a strongly coupled superfluid in 2+1 dimensions. The system is evaluated in numerical real-time simulations in order to study the evolution of the vortices as they approach and eventually annihilate each other. A tracking algorithm with sub-plaquette resolution is introduced which permits a high-precision determination of the vortex trajectories. With the increased precision of the trajectories it becomes possible to directly compute the vortex velocities and accelerations. We find that in the holographic superflui…
The deformation of two-dimensional vortex patches in the vicinity of fluid boundaries is investigated. The presence of a boundary causes an initially circular patch of uniform vorticity to deform. Sufficiently far away from the boundary, the deformed shape is well approximated by an ellipse. This leading order elliptical deformation is investigated via the elliptic moment model of Melander, Zabusky & Styczek [M. V. Melander, N. J. Zabusky & A. S. Styczek, J. Fluid. Mech., 167, 95 (1986)]. When the boundary is straight, the centre of the elliptic patch remains at a constant distance from the bo…
The venerable 2D point-vortex model plays an important role as a simplified version of many disparate physical systems, including superfluids, Bose-Einstein condensates, certain plasma configurations, and inviscid turbulence. This system is also a veritable mathematical playground, touching upon many different disciplines from topology to dynamic systems theory. Point-vortex dynamics are described by a relatively simple system of nonlinear ODEs which can easily be integrated numerically using an appropriate adaptive time stepping method. As the separation between a pair of vortices relative to…
We propose here the use of the variational level set methodology to capture Lagrangian vortex boundaries in 2D unsteady velocity fields. This method reformulates earlier approaches that seek material vortex boundaries as extremum solutions of variational problems. We demonstrate the performance of this technique for two different variational formulations built upon different notions of coherence. The first formulation uses an energy functional that penalizes the deviation of a closed material line from piecewise uniform stretching [Haller and Beron-Vera, J. Fluid Mech. 731, R4 (2013)]. The sec…
We perform numerical simulations of finite temperature quantum turbulence produced through thermal counterflow in superfluid $^4$He, using the vortex filament model. We investigate the effects of solid boundaries along one of the Cartesian directions, assuming a laminar normal fluid with a Poiseuille velocity profile, whilst varying the temperature and the normal fluid velocity. We analyze the distribution of the quantized vortices, reconnection rates and quantized-vorticity production as a function of the wall-normal direction. We find that the quantized vortex lines tend to concentrate close…
We propose a simple model for the evolution of an inviscid vortex sheet in a potential flow in a channel with parallel walls. This model is obtained by augmenting the Birkhoff-Rott equation with a potential field representing the effect of the solid boundaries. Analysis of the stability of equilibria corresponding to flat sheets demonstrates that in this new model the growth rates of the unstable modes remain unchanged as compared to the case with no confinement. Thus, in the presence of solid boundaries the equilibrium solution of the Birkhoff-Rott equation retains its extreme form of instabi…
For the model of a compressible barotropic fluid on a two dimensional rotating Riemmanian manifold we discuss a special class of smooth solutions having a form of a steady non-singular vortex moving with a bearing field. The model can be obtained from the system of primitive equations governing the motion of air over the Earth surface after averaging over the height and therefore the solution obtained can be interpreted as a tropical cyclone which is known as a long time existing stable vortex. We consider approximations of $l$- plane and $β$ - plane used in geophysics for modeling of middle s…
Vorticity and vortex are two different but related concepts. This paper focuses on the investigation of vorticity generation and development, and vorticity structure inside/ outside the vortex. Vortex is a region where the vorticity overtakes deformation. Vortex cannot be directly represented by the vorticity. Except for those vorticity lines which come from and end at side boundaries, another type of vorticity, self-closed vorticity lines named vorticity rings, is numerously generated inside the domain during flow transition. These new vorticity rings are found around the hairpin vortex heads…
We demonstrate that a single reconnection of two quantum vortices can lead to creation of a cascade of vortex rings. Our analysis, motivated by the analytical solution in LIA, involves high-resolution Biot-Savart and Gross-Pitaevskii simulations. The latter showed that the rings cascade starts on the atomic scale, with rings diameters orders of magnitude smaller than the characteristic line spacing in the tangle. So created vortex rings may penetrate the tangle and annihilate on the boundaries. This provides an efficient mechanism of the vortex tangle decay in very low temperatures.
We report recent results from a high resolution numerical study of fluid particles transported by a fully developed turbulent flow. Single particle trajectories were followed for a time range spanning more than three decades, from less than a tenth of the Kolmogorov time-scale up to one large-eddy turnover time. We present some results concerning acceleration statistics and the statistics of trapping by vortex filaments.
We introduce a simple variational principle for coherent material vortices in two-dimensional turbulence. Vortex boundaries are sought as closed stationary curves of the averaged Lagrangian strain. Solutions to this problem turn out to be mathematically equivalent to photon spheres around black holes in cosmology. The fluidic photon spheres satisfy explicit differential equations whose outermost limit cycles are optimal Lagrangian vortex boundaries. As an application, we uncover super-coherent material eddies in the South Atlantic, which yield specific Lagrangian transport estimates for Agulha…
The dynamics of a small rigid spherical particle in an unbounded pulsating vortex is considered, keeping constant the particle Stokes number St and varying the particle-to-fluid density ratio $\varrho$ and the pulsation frequency of the vortex $ω$. We show that the asymptotic dynamics of a particle of given St and $\varrho$ can be controlled by varying $ω$, turning the vortex core either into an attractor or a repellor. The creation of non-trivial particle limit cycles characterizes the boundaries between centrifugal and centripetal regions in parameter space. The discovered phenomenon is term…
We present an experimental and theoretical study of the 2D dynamics of electrically charged nanoparticles trapped under a free surface of superfluid helium in a static vertical electric field. We focus on the dynamics of particles driven by the interaction with quantized vortices terminating at the free surface. We identify two types of particle trajectories and the associated vortex structures: vertical linear vortices pinned at the bottom of the container and half-ring vortices travelling along the free surface of the liquid.
We investigate the dynamics of passive particles in a two-dimensional incompressible open flow composed of a fixed topographical point vortex and a background current with a periodic component. The tracer dynamics is found to be typically chaotic in a mixing region and regular in far upstream and downstream regions of the flow. Chaotic advection of tracers is proven to be of a homoclinic nature with transversal intersections of stable and unstable manifolds of the saddle point. In spite of simplicity of the flow, chaotic trajectories are very complicated alternatively sticking nearby boundarie…
We perform direct numerical simulations of rotating Rayleigh--Bénard convection of fluids with low ($Pr=0.1$) and high ($Pr=5$) Prandtl numbers in a horizontally periodic layer with no-slip top and bottom boundaries. At both Prandtl numbers, we demonstrate the presence of an upscale transfer of kinetic energy that leads to the development of domain-filling vortical structures. Sufficiently strong buoyant forcing and rotation foster the quasi-two-dimensional turbulent state of the flow, despite the formation of plume-like vertical disturbances promoted by so-called Ekman pumping from the viscou…
Vortices play a fundamental role in the physics of two-dimensional (2D) fluids across a range of length scales, from quantum superfluids to geophysical flows. Despite a history dating back to Helmholtz, point vortices in a 2D fluid continue to pose interesting theoretical problems, owing to their unusual statistical mechanics. Here, we show that the strongly interacting Helmholtz-Onsager vortex systems can form statistical edge modes at low energies, extending a previously identified analogy between vortex matter and quantum Hall systems. Through dynamical simulations, Monte-Carlo sampling and…
In the present paper, we study transport properties of coherent vortices. These structures are formed by tubes of fluid parcels that complete similar material rotation. Here, we demonstrate that time $t_0$ positions of such physical structures can be identified from the angular momentum along their trajectories. We identify and extract these Lagrangian vortices as material domain in which fluid elements complete similar Lagrangian angular momentum around the same axis and over the same finite time duration. The present method shows high vortices' monitoring capacity by identifying automaticall…
The Tayler instability is a kink-type flow instability which occurs when the electrical current through a conducting fluid exceeds a certain critical value. Originally studied in the astrophysical context, the instability was recently shown to be also a limiting factor for the upward scalability of liquid metal batteries. In this paper, we continue our efforts to simulate this instability for liquid metals within the framework of an integro-differential equation approach. The original solver is enhanced by multi-domain support with Dirichlet-Neumann partitioning for the static boundaries. Part…
Using direct numerical simulations of rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection, we explore the transitions between turbulent states from a 3D flow state towards a quasi-2D condensate known as the large-scale vortex (LSV). We vary the Rayleigh number $Ra$ as control parameter and study the system response (strength of the LSV) in terms of order parameters assessing the energetic content in the flow and the upscale energy flux. By sensitively probing the boundaries of the region of existence of the LSV in parameter space, we find discontinuous transitions and we identify the presence of a hysteresis …

Point vortex models are presented for the generalized Euler equations, which are characterized by a fractional Laplacian relation between the active scalar and the streamfunction. Special focus is given to the case of the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equations, for which the existence of finite-time singularities is still a matter of debate. Point vortex trajectories are expressed using Nambu dynamics. The formulation is based on a noncanonical bracket and allows for a geometrical interpretation of trajectories as intersections of level sets of the Hamiltonian and Casimir. Within this setti…
We numerically simulate the free decay of two-dimensional quantum turbulence in a large, homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate. The large number of vortices, the uniformity of the density profile and the absence of boundaries (where vortices can drift out of the condensate) isolate the annihilation of vortex-antivortex pairs as the only mechanism which reduces the number of vortices, $\Nv$, during the turbulence decay. The results clearly reveal that vortex annihilation is a four-vortex process, confirming the decay law $\Nv \sim t^{-1/3}$ where $t$ is time, which was inferred from experiments …
We use recent developments in the theory of finite-time dynamical systems to objectively locate the material boundaries of coherent vortices in two-dimensional Navier--Stokes turbulence. We show that these boundaries are optimal in the sense that any closed curve in their exterior will lose coherence under material advection. Through a detailed comparison, we find that other available Eulerian and Lagrangian techniques significantly underestimate the size of each coherent vortex.
