Vortices play a fundamental role in the physics of two-dimensional (2D) fluids across a range of length scales, from quantum superfluids to geophysical flows. Despite a history dating back to Helmholtz, point vortices in a 2D fluid continue to pose interesting theoretical problems, owing to their unusual statistical mechanics. Here, we show that the strongly interacting Helmholtz-Onsager vortex systems can form statistical edge modes at low energies, extending a previously identified analogy between vortex matter and quantum Hall systems. Through dynamical simulations, Monte-Carlo sampling and mean-field theory, we demonstrate that these edge modes are associated with the formation of dipoles of real and image vortices at boundaries. The edge modes are robust, persisting in nonconvex domains, and are in quantitative agreement with the mean-field predictions.
In this letter we numerically investigate the merging mechanism between two clusters of point vortices. We introduce a concept of renormalized Onsager function, an elaboration of the solutions of the mean field equation, and use it to understand the shape of the single cluster observed as a result of the merging process. We finally discuss the potential implications for the inverse cascade 2D turbulence.
In a recent paper [T. Tanogami Phys. Rev. E 103, 023106 ] proposes a scenario for quantum turbulence where the energy spectrum at scales smaller than the inter-vortex distance is dominated by a quantum stress cascade, in opposition to Kelvin wave cascade predictions. The purpose of the present comment is to highlight some physical issues in the derivation of the quantum stress cascade, in particular to stress that quantization of circulation has been ignored.
The effects of different initial perturbations on the evolution of stratified shear flows that are subject to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and vortex pairing have been investigated through Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). The effects of purely random perturbations of the background flow are sensitive to the phase of the subharmonic component of the perturbation that has a wavelength double that of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. If the phase relationship between the Kelvin-Helmholtz mode and its subharmonic mode is optimal, or close to it, vortex pairing occurs. Vortex paring is delayed wh…
We investigate the various physical mechanisms that underlie the dynamical instability of a quantized vortex array at the interface between two counter-propagating superflows in a two-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensate. Instabilities of markedly different nature are found to dominate in different flow velocity regimes. For moderate velocities where the two flows are subsonic, the vortex lattice displays a quantized version of the hydrodynamic Kelvin--Helmholtz instability (KHI), with the vortices rolling up and co-rotating. For supersonic flow velocities, the oscillation involved in the KHI…
If a quantum fluid is driven with enough angular momentum, at equilibrium the ground state of the system is given by a lattice of quantised vortices whose density is prescribed by the quantization of circulation. We report on the first experimental study of the Feynman-Onsager relation in a non-equilibrium polariton fluid, free to expand and rotate. Upon initially imprinting a lattice of vortices in the quantum fluid, we track the vortex core positions on picosecond time scales. We observe an accelerated stretching of the lattice and an outward bending of the linear trajectories of the vortice…
Helmholtz theorem states that, in ideal fluid, vortex lines move with the fluid. Another Helmholtz theorem adds that strength of a vortex tube is constant along the tube. The lines may be regarded as integral surfaces of a 1-dimensional integrable distribution (given by the vorticity 2-form). In general setting of theory of integral invariants, due to Poincare and Cartan, one can find $d$-dimensional integrable distribution whose integral surfaces show both properties of vortex lines: they move with (abstract) fluid and, for appropriate generalization of vortex tube, strength of the latter is …
For the first time the exact vortex solution of the Cauchy problem in unbounded space is obtained for the three-dimensional Euler-Helmholtz (EH) equation in the case of a nonzero-divergence velocity field for an ideal compressible medium. The solution obtained describes the inertial vortex motion and coincides with the exact solution to the three-dimensional Riemann-Hopf (RH) equation which simulates turbulence without pressure [Chefranov, 1991]. A necessary and sufficient condition of the onset of a singularity in the evolution of the enstrophy in finite time t=t0 is obtained for this solutio…
In this investigation we use a simple model of the dynamics of an inviscid vortex sheet given by the Birkhoff-Rott equation to obtain fundamental insights about the potential for stabilization of shear layers using feedback control. As actuation we consider two arrays of point sinks/sources located a certain distance above and below the vortex sheet and subject to the constraint that their mass fluxes separately add up to zero. First, we demonstrate using analytical computations that the Birkhoff-Rott equation linearized around the flat-sheet configuration is in fact controllable when the numb…
In a two-dimensional (2D) turbulent fluid containing point-like vortices, Lars Onsager predicted that adding energy to the fluid can lead to the formation of persistent clusters of like-signed vortices, i.e., Onsager vortex (OV) clusters. In the evolution of 2D superfluid turbulence in a uniform disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), it was discovered that a pair of OV clusters with opposite signs can form without any energy input. This striking spontaneous order was explained as due to a vortex evaporative-heating mechanism, i.e., annihilations of vortex-antivortex pairs which remove the…
It has been observed empirically that two dimensional vortices tend to cluster forming a giant vortex. To account for this observation Onsager introduced a concept of negative absolute temperature in equilibrium statistical mechanics. In this Letter we will show that in the thermodynamic limit a system of interacting vortices does not relax to the thermodynamic equilibrium, but becomes trapped in a non-equilibrium stationary state. We will show that the vortex distribution in this non-equilibrium stationary state has a characteristic core-halo structure, which can be predicted {\it a priori}. …
In the present note, we solved numerically the viscous vorticity equation of the initial-boundary value problem describing the classic Helmholtz phenomena of vortex interaction. In the leapfrogging of vortex pairs, we demonstrate the fact that there exists a variety of initial vortex configurations, such as the initial vortex core structures, the starting speeds, the lateral and longitudinal separations as well as the fluid viscosity. To simulate leapfrogging appears to be a straightforward task, based on the vorticity calculations for a number of initial vortices with different core structure…
Possible Implications of a Vortex Gas Model and Self-Similarity for Tornadogenesis and Maintenance
我们用Chorin(1994)提出的三维涡旋气体模型描述了龙卷风的发生和维持,Flandoli和Gubinelli(2002)进一步发展了该模型。我们认为,Fiedler和Rotunno(1986)研究过的Benjamin(1962)意义上的高能超临界涡旋,具有Onsager(1949)意义上的负温度,在模型中起着重要作用。我们推测高温涡旋的形成与它们形成或倾斜到垂直方向时所继承的螺旋度以及它们与表面和边界层的相互作用有关。我们还利用自相似性的概念来证明Cai(2005); Wurman and Gill(2000); Wurman and Alexander(2005)中提出的从弱龙卷风和强龙卷风的观测中得出的幂律。分析布赖恩云模型(CM 1)模拟的龙卷风超级单体揭示了与观测研究一致的缩放。
Vortex-sheet models of jets are widely used to describe the dynamics of modes, such as the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and guided acoustic waves. However, it is seldom pointed out in the literature the absence of the free-stream acoustic modes in the vortex-sheet spectrum. This indicates that free-stream sound waves are not eigensolutions of the parallel jet. This family of modes is important if, for example, one is interested in problems of sound emission or flow-acoustic interactions. In this work we show how a distantly-confined jet may be used as a surrogate problem for the free jet, in w…

The leapfrogging of coaxial vortex rings is a famous effect which has been noticed since the times of Helmholtz. Recent advances in ultra-cold atomic gases show that the effect can now be studied in quantum fluids. The strong confinement which characterizes these systems motivates the study of leapfrogging of vortices within narrow channels. Using the two-dimensional point vortex model, we show that in the constrained geometry of a two-dimensional channel the dynamics is richer than in an unbounded domain: alongsize the known regimes of standard leapfrogging and the absence of it, we identify …
In the present study, quantitative feasibility tests of the hydrodynamic description of a two-dimensional fluid at the molecular level are performed, both with respect to length and time scales. Using high-resolution fluid velocity data obtained from extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we computed the transverse and longitudinal components of the velocity field by the Helmholtz decomposition and compared them with those obtained from the linearized Navier-Stokes (LNS) equations with time-dependent transport coefficients. By investigating the vortex dynamics and the sound wave propagation…
