This paper introduces a novel computer-assisted method for detecting and constructively proving the existence of cusp bifurcations in differential equations. The approach begins with a two-parameter continuation along which a tool based on the theory of Poincaré index is employed to identify the presence of a cusp bifurcation. Using the approximate cusp location, Newton's method is then applied to a given augmented system (the cusp map), yielding a more precise numerical approximation of the cusp. Through a successful application of a Newton-Kantorovich type theorem, we establish the existence of a non-degenerate zero of the cusp map in the vicinity of the numerical approximation. Employing a Gershgorin circles argument, we then prove that exactly one eigenvalue of the Jacobian matrix at the cusp candidate has zero real part, thus rigorously confirming the presence of a cusp bifurcation. Finally, by incorporating explicit control over the cusp's location, a rigorous enclosure for the normal form coefficient is obtained, providing the explicit dynamics on the center manifold at the cusp. We show the effectiveness of this method by applying it to four distinct models.
Control-based continuation is technique for tracking the solutions and bifurcations of nonlinear experiments. The basic idea is to apply the method of numerical continuation to a feedback-controlled physical experiment. Since in an experiment it is not (generally) possible to set the state of the system directly, the control target is used as a proxy for the state. The challenge then becomes to determine a control target such that the control is non-invasive, that is, it stabilises a steady-state (or periodic orbit) of the original open-loop experiment without altering it otherwise. Once imple…
Nonlinear controlled plants with Bogdanov-Takens singularity may experience surprising changes in their number of equilibria, limit cycles and/or their stability types when the controllers slightly vary in the vicinity of critical parameter varieties. Each such a change is called a local bifurcation. We derive novel results with regards to truncated parametric normal form classification of the generalized cusp plants. Then, we suggest effective nonlinear bifurcation control law designs for precisely locating and accurately controlling many different types of bifurcations for two measurable pla…
In this paper we present a general approach to rigorously validate Hopf bifurcations as well as saddle-node bifurcations of periodic orbits in systems of ODEs. By a combination of analytic estimates and computer-assisted calculations, we follow solution curves of cycles through folds, checking along the way that a single nondegenerate saddle-node bifurcation occurs. Similarly, we rigorously continue solution curves of cycles starting from their onset at a Hopf bifurcation. We use a blowup analysis to regularize the continuation problem near the Hopf bifurcation point. This extends the applicab…
Continuation of algebraic structures in families of dynamical systems is described using category theory, sheaves, and lattice algebras. Well-known concepts in dynamics, such as attractors or invariant sets, are formulated as functors on appropriate categories of dynamical systems mapping to categories of lattices, posets, rings or abelian groups. Sheaves are constructed from such functors, which encode data about the continuation of structure as system parameters vary. Similarly, morphisms for the sheaves in question arise from natural transformations. This framework is applied to a variety o…
In this paper we perform the parameter-dependent center manifold reduction near the generalized Hopf (Bautin), fold-Hopf, Hopf-Hopf and transcritical-Hopf bifurcations in delay differential equations (DDEs). This allows us to initialize the continuation of codimension one equilibria and cycle bifurcations emanating from these codimension two bifurcation points. The normal form coefficients are derived in the functional analytic perturbation framework for dual semigroups (sun-star calculus) using a normalization technique based on the Fredholm alternative. The obtained expressions give explicit…
We study the spatially homogeneous time dependent solutions and their bifurcations of the Gray-Scott model. We find the global map of bifurcations by a combination of rigorous verification of the existence of Takens Bogdanov and a Bautin bifurcations, in the space of two parameters k and F. With the aid of numerical continuation of local bifurcation curves we give a global description of all the possible bifurcations
We study traveling wave solutions of the Kerner--Konhäuser PDE for traffic flow. By a standard change of variables, the problem is reduced to a dynamical system in the plane with three parameters. In a previous paper (Carrillo, F.A., J. Delgado, P. Saavedra, R.M. Velasco and F. Verduzco, (2013). Traveling waves, catastrophes and bifurcations in a generic second order traffic flow model --to appear in \textit{International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos}--, it was shown that under general hypotheses on the fundamental diagram, the dynamical system has a surface of critical points showing eith…
The paper provides full algorithmic details on switching to the continuation of all possible codim 1 cycle bifurcations from generic codim 2 equilibrium bifurcation points in n-dimensional ODEs. We discuss the implementation and the performance of the algorithm in several examples, including an extended Lorenz-84 model and a laser system.
Time delay has been incorporated in models to reflect certain physical or biological meaning. The theory of delay differential equations (DDEs), which has seen extensive growth in the last seventy years or so, can be used to examine the effects of time delay in the dynamical behavior of systems being considered. Numerical tools to study DDEs have played a significant role not only in illustrating theoretical results but also in discovering interesting dynamics of the model. DDE-Biftool, which is a Matlab package for numerical continuation and numerical bifurcation analysis of DDEs, is one of t…

Motivated by mirror symmetry, we consider the Lagrangian fibration $\R^4\to\R^2$ and Lagrangian maps $f:L\hookrightarrow \R^4\to \R^2$, exhibiting an unstable singularity, and study how the bifurcation locus of gradient lines, the integral curves of $\nabla f_x$, for $x\in B$, where $f_x(y)=f(y)-x\cdot y$, changes when $f$ is slightly perturbed. We consider the cases when $f$ is the germ of a fold, of a cusp and, particularly, of an elliptic umbilic.
Recently, a novel bifurcation technique known as the deflated continuation method (DCM) was applied to the single-component nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with a parabolic trap in two spatial dimensions. The bifurcation analysis carried out by a subset of the present authors shed light on the configuration space of solutions of this fundamental problem in the physics of ultracold atoms. In the present work, we take this a step further by applying the DCM to two coupled NLS equations in order to elucidate the considerably more complex landscape of solutions of this system. Upon identifyin…
We consider the regularized Ericksen model of an elastic bar on an elastic foundation on an interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions as a two-parameter bifurcation problem. We explore, using local bifurcation analysis and continuation methods, the structure of bifurcations from double zero eigenvalues. Our results provide evidence in support of Müller's conjecture \cite{Muller} concerning the symmetry of local minimizers of the associated energy functional and describe in detail the structure of the primary branch connections that occur in this problem. We give a reformulation of Müller's c…
Periodic orbits and associated bifurcations of singularly perturbed state-dependent delay differential equations (DDEs) are studied when the profiles of the periodic orbits contain jump discontinuities in the singular limit. A definition of singular solution is introduced which is based on a continuous parametrisation of the possibly discontinuous limiting solution. This reduces the construction of the limiting profiles to an algebraic problem. A model two state-dependent delay differential equation is studied in detail and periodic singular solutions are constructed with one and two local max…
We make a detailed numerical study of a three dimensional dissipative vector field derived from the normal form for a cusp-Hopf bifurcation. The vector field exhibits a Neimark-Sacker bifurcation giving rise to an attracting invariant torus. Our main goals are to (A) follow the torus via parameter continuation from its appearance to its disappearance, studying its dynamics between these events, and to (B) study the embeddings of the stable/unstable manifolds of the hyperbolic equilibrium solutions over this parameter range, focusing on their role as transport barriers and their participation i…
Numerical bifurcation analysis, and in particular two-parameter continuation, is used in consort with numerical simulation to reveal complicated dynamics in the Mackey-Glass equation for moderate values of the delay close to the onset of chaos. In particular a cusp bifurcation of periodic orbits and resulting branches of folds of periodic orbits effectively partition the parameter space into regions where different behaviours are seen. The cusp bifurcation leads directly to bistability between periodic orbits, and subsequently to bistability between a periodic orbit and a chaotic attractor. Th…
The present work studies the robustness of certain basic homoclinic motions in an equilateral restricted four body problem. The problem can be viewed as a two parameter family of conservative autonomous vector fields. The main tools are numerical continuation techniques for homoclinic and periodic orbits, as well as formal series methods for computing normal forms and center stable/unstable manifold parameterizations. After careful numerical study of a number of special cases we formulate several conjectures about the global bifurcations of the homoclinic families.
We consider a widely used form of models for ship maneuvering, whose nonlinearities entail continuous but nonsmooth second-order modulus terms. For such models bifurcations of straight motion are not amenable to standard center manifold reduction and normal forms. Based on a recently developed analytical approach, we nevertheless determine the character of local bifurcations when stabilizing the straight motion course with standard proportional control. For a specific model class we perform a detailed analysis of the linearization to determine the location of these bifurcations in the control …
A piecewise-linear model with a single degree of freedom is derived from first principles for a driven vertical cantilever beam with a localized mass and symmetric stops. The resulting piecewise-linear dynamical system is smoothed by a switching function (nonlinear homotopy). For the chosen smoothing function it is shown that the smoothing can induce bifurcations in certain parameter regimes. These induced bifurcations disappear when the transition of the switching is sufficiently and increasingly localized as the impact becomes harder. The bifurcation structure of the impact oscillator respon…
When extending bifurcation theory of dynamical systems to nonautonomous problems, it is a central observation that hyperbolic equilibria persist as bounded entire solutions under small temporally varying perturbations. In this paper, we abandon the smallness assumption and aim to investigate the global structure of the entity of all such bounded entire solutions in the situation of nonautonomous difference equations. Our tools are global implicit function theorems based on an ambient degree theory for Fredholm operators due to Fitzpatrick, Pejsachowicz and Rabier. For this we yet have to restr…
The present work studies the continuation class of the regular $n$-gon solution of the $n$-body problem. For odd numbers of bodies between $n = 3$ and $n = 15$ we apply one parameter numerical continuation algorithms to the energy/frequency variable, and find that the figure eight choreography can be reached starting from the regular $n$-gon. The continuation leaves the plane of the $n$-gon, and passes through families of spatial choreographies with the topology of torus knots. Numerical continuation out of the $n$-gon solution is complicated by the fact that the kernel of the linearization th…
In this paper, we consider the dynamics of a predator-prey system of Gause type with cooperative hunting among predators and Holling III functional response. The known work numerically shows that the system exhibits saddle-node and Hopf bifurcations except homoclinic bifurcation for some special parameter values. Our results show that there are a weak focus of multiplicity three and a degenerate equilibrium with double zero eigenvalues (i.e., a cusp of codimension two) for general parameter conditions and the system can exhibit various bifurcations as perturbing the bifurcation parameters appr…
The Morris-Lecar (ML) model has applications to neuroscience and cognition. A simple network consisting of a pair of synaptically coupled ML neurons can exhibit a wide variety of deterministic behaviors including asymmetric amplitude state (AAS), equal amplitude state (EAS), and steady state (SS). In addition, in the presence of noise this network can exhibit mixed-mode oscillations (MMO), which represent the system being stochastically driven between these behaviors. In this paper, we develop a method to specifically estimate the parameters representing the coupling strength (gsyn) and the ap…
This paper considers the extreme type-II Ginzburg-Landau equations, a nonlinear PDE model that describes the states of a wide range of superconductors. For two-dimensional grids, a robust method is developed that performs a numerical continuation of the equations, automatically exploring the whole solution landscape. The strength of the applied magnetic field is used as the bifurcation parameter. Our branch switching algorithm is based on Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction, but we will show that for an important class of grids an alternative method based on the equivariant branching lemma can be appli…
This chapter presents a dynamical systems point of view of the study of systems with delays. The focus is on how advanced tools from bifurcation theory, as implemented for example in the package DDE-BIFTOOL, can be applied to the study of delay differential equations (DDEs) arising in applications, including those that feature state-dependent delays. We discuss the present capabilities of the most recent release of DDE-BIFTOOL. They include the numerical continuation of steady states, periodic orbits and their bifurcations of codimension one, as well as the detection of certain bifurcations of…
We examine the interaction of transcritical and saddle-node bifurcations in a predator-prey-nutrient system that is stressed by the presence of a toxicant affecting the prey. This model, formulated by Kooi et al. ({\sl Ecol. Model.} {\bf 212}(2008), 304--318), has a two-dimensional invariant sub system with zero predator density. In the sub system, a pair of prey-nutrient equilibria is created in a saddle-node bifurcation, while predator invasion in modelled by a transcritical bifurcation of one of this pair. Interactions of these bifurcations at codimension-two points give rise to bistable, p…
The FitzHugh-Nagumo equation has been investigated with a wide array of different methods in the last three decades. Recently a version of the equations with an applied current was analyzed by Champneys, Kirk, Knobloch, Oldeman and Sneyd using numerical continuation methods. They obtained a complicated bifurcation diagram in parameter space featuring a C-shaped curve of homoclinic bifurcations and a U-shaped curve of Hopf bifurcations. We use techniques from multiple time-scale dynamics to understand the structures of this bifurcation diagram based on geometric singular perturbation analysis o…
In this paper, we will perform the parameter-dependent center manifold reduction near the generic and transcritical codimension two Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation in classical delay differential equations (DDEs). Using a generalization of the Lindstedt-Poincaré method to approximate the homoclinic solution allows us to initialize the continuation of the homoclinic bifurcation curves emanating from these points. The normal form transformation is derived in the functional analytic perturbation framework for dual semigroups (sun-star calculus) using a normalization technique based on the Fredholm al…
We adopt a robust numerical continuation scheme to examine the global bifurcation of periodic traveling waves of the capillary-gravity Whitham equation, which combines the dispersion in the linear theory of capillary-gravity waves and a shallow water nonlinearity. We employ a highly accurate numerical method for space discretization and time stepping, to address orbital stability and instability for a rich variety of the solutions. Our findings can help classify capillary-gravity waves and understand their long-term dynamics.
We consider the dynamical effects of electromagnetic flux on the discrete Chialvo neuron. It is shown that the model can exhibit rich dynamical behaviors such as multistability, firing patterns, antimonotonicity, closed invariant curves, various routes to chaos, fingered chaotic attractors. The system enters chaos via period-doubling cascades, reverse period-doubling route, antimonotonicity, via closed invariant curve to chaos. The results were confirmed using the techniques of bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponent diagram, phase portraits, basins of attraction and numerical continuation of …
We analyze the transition between pulled and pushed fronts both analytically and numerically from a model-independent perspective. Based on minimal conceptual assumptions, we show that pushed fronts bifurcate from a branch of pulled fronts with an effective speed correction that scales quadratically in the bifurcation parameter. Strikingly, we find that in this general context without assumptions on comparison principles, the pulled front loses stability and gives way to a pushed front when monotonicity in the leading edge is lost. Our methods rely on far-field core decompositions that identif…
In this work, we consider a general conductance-based neuron model with the inclusion of the acetycholine sensitive, M-current. We study bifurcations in the parameter space consisting of the applied current, $I_{app}$ the maximal conductance of the M-current, $g_M$, and the conductance of the leak current, $g_L$. We give precise conditions for the model that ensure the existence of a Bogdanov-Takens (BT) point and show such a point can occur by varying $I_{app}$ and $g_{M}$. We discuss the case when the BT point becomes a Bogdanov-Takens-Cusp (BTC) point and show that such a point can occur in…
We revisit a problem considered by Chow and Hale on the existence of subharmonic solutions for perturbed systems. In the analytic setting, under more general (weaker) conditions, we prove their results on the existence of bifurcation curves from the nonexistence to the existence of subharmonic solutions. In particular our results apply also when one has degeneracy to first order -- i.e. when the subharmonic Melnikov function vanishes identically. Moreover we can deal as well with the case in which degeneracy persists to arbitrarily high orders, in the sense that suitable generalisations to hig…
This paper provides for the first time correct third-order homoclinic predictors in $n$-dimensional ODEs near a generic Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation point. To achieve this, higher-order time approximations to the nonlinear time transformation in the Lindstedt-Poincaré method are essential. Moreover, a correct transform between approximations to solutions in the normal form and approximations to solutions on the parameter-dependent center manifold is needed. A detailed comparison is done between applying different normal forms (smooth and orbital), different phase conditions, and different pertu…
We perform both analytical and numerical bifurcation analysis of a forest-grassland ecosystem model coupled with human interaction. The model consists of two nonlinear ordinary differential equations incorporating the human perception of forest/grassland value. The system displays multiple steady states corresponding to different forest densities as well as regimes characterized by both stable and unstable limit cycles. We derive analytically the conditions with respect to the model parameters that give rise to various types of codimension-one criticalities such as transcritical, saddle-node, …
In molecular reactions at the microscopic level the appearance of resonances has an important influence on the reactivity. It is important to predict when a bound state transitions into a resonance and how these transitions depend on various system parameters such as internuclear distances. The dynamics of such systems are described by the time-independent Schrödinger equation and the resonances are modeled by poles of the S-matrix. Using numerical continuation methods and bifurcation theory, techniques which find their roots in the study of dynamical systems, we are able to develop efficient …
In this contribution, we introduce numerical continuation methods and bifurcation theory, techniques which find their roots in the study of dynamical systems, to the problem of tracing the parameter dependence of bound and resonant states of the quantum mechanical Schrödinger equation. We extend previous work on the subject to systems of coupled equations. Bound and resonant states of the Schrödinger equation can be determined through the poles of the S-matrix, a quantity that can be derived from the asymptotic form of the wave function. We introduce a regularization procedure that essentially…
